These two guys can talk about Bertrand Russel, St. Agustine and Tutankhamen as if they were talking about their mate from next block they had a pint with in the pub last Friday.
    Amazing

Not judging anyone nor trying to be the 'back in the day' guy here, but I wonder if social media has affected long-term information retention in some way. Everyone should have some understanding and cognisance of the three you named, even from high school classes, right?

Craig and Stephen should have a show where they just talk about issues like these. I loved watching this. I love getting others views cuz it brings me closer to a new perspective. Sometimes it’s ugly, but I learn something new.

Abbey National (later bought by Santander) owned 221b Baker street, and for years they employed a 'Sherlock Holmes secretary', to answer the huge amount of mail sent there. The story of the history of this address and the various attempts to lay claim to it are a fairly interesting story. Bet Dr C-D would've loved to see the chaos he caused by bringing fame to this non-existant address.

Stephen said: “By their fruits shall you know them.”
The King James Bible said in Matthew 7:20: “Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.”
Of course modern translations make it less poetic; I was googling this sentence and one version simply stated: “You will recognize them by their fruits.”

These determined arguments for antiquated, organised religion are really pretty hilarious. I mean, a book written (but adjusted since), in a time when we thought the Earth was flat, didn't understand electrical storms, comets etc, which has some great stories, don't get me wrong, cannot be taken as gospel (excuse the pun... and I quite like gospel music). But to skip to a new point, say we somehow haven't committed any sins, including sex before marriage and eating shrimp, and a raft of other things Christians have to believe to be consistent imo...
Then is this a physical place? Heaven? Also why does God have a business deal with his arch nemesis, the devil? But it can't be physical, because we've left our body, so where is it? Another dimension... well, only theoretical physics can figure that out, not religion... (So, no Santa... well not for me this year!)

It's to detract from the horror of the realisation that we all die at some point. We just need to live with the fact that we are slowly killing the planet and making species extinct, our only hope is to sire enough generations to achieve a breakthrough in the fields of space travel and medicine that would produce a generation who could explore the universe and live for thousands of years or dare I say it they become gods.
Or we all kill each other squabbling over who controls the worlds resources. Or Zombies happen. Personally i like the Zombies option

Not a religious person but when talking about the set of values that made the US and not to mention the role Christianity had is a bit disingenuous. And to imply it was just the influence of the Enlightenment etc is nonsense.

    • @paperbackonly8438
      @paperbackonly8438 5 лет назад +2

Exactly, and deism was a big part of Enlightenment also. Christianity might have taken a philosophical bent, but it's Christianity nonetheless. The way we can separate the religious from the sociological-philosophical aspect of any organized religion is based on our disbelief in the religion. We can say "Greek religion has many interesting aspects" because we examine it from the outside. To the Greeks, it is just "the way it is, and should be". The same argument goes for Christianity.

Fry said Bible is interested in
    1. Circumcision A : No it is not.
    2. Slavery A : No it doesn't condones it.
    3. Daughter of the people who you conquered A : Nothing of such sort described.
It's really hilarious when people like Fry who are considered to be smart and intelligent do not even read the whole bible and understand it and from what i can understand take things out of context to suit their point of view.
I'm a believer since 2017 and i've read the Bible on my own, also i was born into a different religion and have read, studied most of the religions of earth, and still i can understand on my own how blatantly people like Fry who are considered to be intellectual actually lie and get away with it because no one who actually has read and understands the Bible doesn't corrects them.

The bible definitely condones slavery. Often there is conflation between the laws assigned to the indentured servitude of fellow Hebrews and the enslavement of foreigners, but both would be considered morally repugnant these days anyway.

    • @tashazalinski5250
      @tashazalinski5250 3 года назад +6

What do you mean?! Circumcision is mentioned in the bible! Take Genesis 17:12-13 for example: “And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with the money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed”. That’s not only circumcision but slavery too.
And it’s not just in the Old Testament - in Ephesians 6:5-8 Paul states, “slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear”. In fact, slavery is mentioned many times in both the Old and New Testaments. Again in Colossians 3:22-24 “slaves, obey your earthy masters in everything”, in Timothy 6:1-2 “all who are under the yoke of slavery should consider their masters worthy of full respect”, in Titus 2:9-10 “teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything, to try to please them, not to talk back to them, and not to steal from them”. Do you want me to go on?!
As for the daughters thing, he didn’t specify what he meant by this so idk.. but in Exodus 21:7-11 a man can sell his daughter into servitude when her master or his son will marry her. And in Numbers 31 Moses says the Irealites should “now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man”. Which seems pretty dodgy to me.
Follow your religion, I have nothing against that. I think faith is a very personal thing, and not something to be mocked. But don’t lie as an attempt to undermine Stephen or what he has to say. He’s got a right to say it and he’s regarded as an intelligent man for a reason.

@@tashazalinski5250 Nice of you to take the time and reply... but this is what i meant by Context :) yep individually all those things are mentioned but when Jesus was asked the most important law he said : "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind," "Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself."
Just Believe in Jesus Christ.. A B C simple
      A : Accept you're a sinner
b : Believe in Jesus Christ as your savior
C : Confess with you're mouth that you believe in him as your savior.
that's it you're done no need to get circumcision, no need of slavery or any other act that is sin or evil... God being good cannot condone Evil:)
abc simple no need of water baptism or any other man made tradition..
everything can be understood and explained if you see the whole book as an account of history and see the whole picture with context and finally remembering the moral of the story... that after everything is being said and done what is being asked of us to do ..... and what is asked of us is "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind," & "Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself."
:) hope this explains a little bit of what you asked.

@@lifevlogs9 I very much like that idea but not every Christian feels the same way that you do, and you can’t ignore that those are in the text in the first place. I was just pointing out that he’s not lying... the Bible does mentions those things in spades. What you do with that is up to you :) also I hate the idea of original sin so 🤷🏻‍♀️ we’re not going to agree. But that’s okay. We don’t have to.

Proverbs 3:5, dude. "Do not lean upon your own understanding"...
It's all a man-made fiction for the justification of empowering one group of people over another but if you've really read the book, you'd know that scripture.
I believe the more cynical translation would be "Don't over think this stuff, please or you'll expose the scam", similar to "Do not look behind the curtain" in the Wizard of Oz...
Good and Evil do not exist in an elemental sense, they are only separated by perspective. Neither can be proven to be fundamentally 'true', only beneficial or not beneficial on an entirely subjective basis.
