I was 16 years old when I stayed up late to watch this. It wasn't just laughs but a serious conversation between two gentlemen,who were capable of having a truly enlightening conversation that nobody in my life could. This trulyhas led to a lifetime of meditation. Self reflection, and deep profound thought of our existence. Maybe someday I'll actually take the time to write these thoughts and hopefully help someone else like these two wonderful men helped me.
It has had a lasting impression on me too. I was around 21 when it came out and I remember being drawn to the intellectual conversation they had and how entertaining it was.
Stephen Fry works so hard… just listen to the number of projects he had currently going at the time of this interview. Amazing. What a blessing to live at the same time as him. So happy I got to meet him once.

You don't often watch television programs or videos on the internet that really teach you something. I feel like I've learned a lot about life just by listening to these two great lads talking for 40 minutes. It could have easily been 4000 minutes and I would have still watched with great interest. Also, it reminded me I need to read more books because I wanna talk and think like Stephen Fry

The cold open really describes the show and how much fan attraction it has. This show wasn't fed to us, we all found it and took interest. However, it's sad that the interest in this show started for me about 5 months ago, long after it's running, here on RUclips by fellow die-hard fans. It's a one of a kind show that is just funny and comical to watch. This too is a very interesting and special episode and it's cool Craig wanted to do something like this.

Stephen mentions Douglas Adams and their mutual love for Apple products, which produced a fast friendship. After Douglas died, and Hollywood was going to produce a Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy movie, Stephen Fry (successfully) worked very hard to be a part of it - eventually securing the role as "The Voice Of The Guide". He was f'ing PERFECT in this role, and every time I rewatch the movie I often tear up, knowing how much Stephen admired Douglas and how this was his homage to a great friend and comedic genius.
Just now stumbled upon this episode. Loved it. I enjoy in depth and/or rambling conversations between interesting, thoughtful people. Did not at all miss an audience whooping whenever Craig or Stephen mentioned America, Northern California, or any other familiar locale. Wish they had discussed Jeeves & Wooster.
I do agree. Dave was the precedent when he was on NBC, then Conan carried it over afterwards, but Craig really made it into this "weird, acid trip" that made the current "Late Night" climate with Fallon, Meyers, Colbert, Corden, Kimmel, Noah, Oliver, Maher, Bee and Singh look bland and typical.
His tribute to Snyder was really well done with the perfect guest. Costas did something similar as a show called LATER. Now we have good podcasts that do things that are similar, but we have to search them out.

This was truly great but disheartening when you realize it took two foreigners to recreate something that American talk shows have long since abandoned. We're no longer forward thinkers because we traded intellect for entertainment, though CF gave us something really fresh and enjoyable in the late night space. However the optimism SF feels when he's here is dying (I think) because unlike immigrants like him that get to experience it firsthand are different than those of us that are born here and are grow up with imagery of what America used to look like. It's when we see the current state of the govt/economy/world around us we become discouraged and lose that optimism. Although maybe that's Plato's cave effect.
I don't particularly believe that. I think our entertainment is 'chosen' for us. There are far too many shows taken off-air that are good and too many put on-air that are awful.
We, as a population, decide what entertainment is on. Investors will invest in what people want to watch. If people consume vacuous and trivial entertainment then that's what media will make more of. It's not like PBS or BBC where there is a bit of push for higher quality.
Fortunately, RUclips retains some good examples of Tom Snyder, Dick Cavett, and the like. A shame TV doesn't feel braver about offering more of their ilk.
This is just an uneducated theory but I think that reality tv shows are designed in such a way that makes them addictive. We know they're bad for us and we don't actually enjoy watching them that much. They are't particularly funny or engaging and yet we get hooked on them.
Dick Cavett held our attention interviewing influencers from all walks of life. He is missed. David Frost too another fine mind asking the important questions.

my sense of humor is so aligned to what Craig does, this show and his stand up. Always has me cracking up. What i also really like about Craig is his brain. He's not a dumbass, and i appreciate that about him. This ep. is by far one of my favourites. I also do enjoy Mr. Fry as well. Suppose that helps. After all these years from watching this show when it was airing to now. So glad these shows are here to come back to and rewatch. I miss Craig and would love to see him do shows under this format. Intelligent, light hearted, humourous, serious chats. Not interviews, but chats. No not a podcast per say.....ya know.....lol Ah well. At least we have rewatching options at least.

More intimate frame of the show than regular late late. When podcasts weren't a thing and you had eloquent people in showbusiness. Less jokes more biographical stuff and better comments

This is a podcast, Craig’s idea was literally a podcast. Imagine if CBS had supported Craig with this.
