I originally watched this when you first posted it but didn’t pay it much attention as you named it coffee cake, I don’t like coffee so I dismissed the recipe, it’s only now that I found it again after searching for this Bulgarian dessert and it’s not even got coffee in the cake, ie, I would very much enjoy it as it’s an Apple Crumble Cake. Thanks for your recipe 👹
Yum...make an adult version with some rum!
One of my favorite treats for holiday breakfast was when my Dad made Lüchow’s apple pancakes with a healthy sprinkle of rum to flambé. They were thin, almost more of a crepe, the way dad did them.
It’s the bomb. Chef John you rock!
@@MaZEEZaMThese are a type of cake in America commonly called a “Coffee Cake” as they are to be served with coffee. They don’t have coffee in them. For example, the lady of the house might invite neighbor ladies over for “coffee” which means coffee with a cake like this.
I love the fact that he mentions eating this as an entrée because that is exactly what I will do.
Amanda Perez As nature intended... ; ]
Yeah... breakfast entree with side of coffee
What a brilliant throwaway line!
Hey if its maximum flavor and quality ingredients it can be a whole meal.
My people!
I wasn't born in North America and grew up with coffee cake that was actually coffee flavoured. Always throws me for a loop that (typically) North American coffee cake is simply a cake meant to be eaten with coffee, not necessarily flavoured by it
Ah
A coffee flavored coffee cake sounds amazing! I might start looking for recipes for that!.
Ha, thought i was loosing the plot there. I even watched it twice thinking i'd missed the coffee going in. Thanks for the clarification. 👍

I have an excess of apples and yogurt in this pandemic. how did chef john know that this was exactly the recipe I was looking for for mothers day.
I was thinking 'what already' then realised we already had it here. Phew.
Sounds better than apple yogurt parfait.
Food Wishes elf spies.
Me too, that's why I made this as soon as I watched the video, so good. :)😋
That was my first thought watching: "Hey, I have that. I have that too. I have it all!"
..... Did you just say.... “an entree”.... chef John!???! You’ve opened the door to my heart !!
I caught that. I also drink coffee at 5pm.
This was awesome. I did decrease the sugar from 1 cup to 3/4, and as Chef John suggested, I switched the greek yogurt to sour cream because I didn't have any yogurt at the time. I also added a teaspoon of allspice to the crumble mix. This was very easy to make. Chef John makes everything look easy, but really - you can do this one!
This looks fantastic. Many thanks from the land of the crumble (UK) to America's gift to the world, chef John.
I just made this recipe and it tastes sooo yummy! The only change I made was cut sugar by 50% and this sweetness level was perfect for me. The cake was moist and mildly flavored by the apples, it was the perfect accompaniment for the sugary cinnamon nut crumble.
You could probably cut the dairy in half too and maybe replace it with apple sauce or apple juice or half as much water or simply use less of the dry mixture.
OHMYGOODNESS!! I made this last night, followed the instructions ALMOST to the T (in the printed recipe, it includes 2 tsp of butter for the "dry ingredients," I could only guess that was supposed to be 2 tsp of butter to grease the pan?), and not only did my cake smell heavenly last night, but the serving I just had now, with my coffee, was SUPERB!!!! (I of course had a smaller portion last night with a glass of milk - AMAZING!!) Thanks again, Chef John!
So glad I'm not the only one out of 4 million subscribers that looked at the recipe to make it. (Mystery butter was left out of mine) I just made it, and am not waiting to cool off. I bet this would be good with a little icing drizzled over it.
I saw that and eliminated it altogether figuring it must've been a typo
Did u use Honey Crisp’s?
I used it for greasing the pan 😉
John's quips are the reason why I watch these videos.
I made this last night and it was incredible. I didn't have sour cream or yogurt so I made buttermilk out of whole milk and vinegar and it worked really well.
This sounds weird but I could smell how good this is
Chef John has that effect!! 🙌🏼😉
No ,when you cook and bake a lot you know how the ingredients taste, together! I will make this recipe but l will add CINNAMON! I LOVE WHEN MY HOUSE SMELLS LIKE CHRISTMAS!☃️❄☃️🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄
Nope. This sounds absolutely normal...
I could taste it🙌
Do some research on Rupert Sheldrake, UK Oxford professor, and morphogenic fields. Actually it is not impossible at all.
This cake was so good (even when reducing the sugar for the batter to 3/4 cup/used full fat sour cream/Fuji apples) it made it to my picky-eater mum's clean plate club! She even showed the cake off to her friends this mother's day and asked me to make it again for future family gatherings! Thank you chef!
I'm putting "sad and texturally inappropriate" on my headstone
hahaha, laughed for a good 3 min. Nice. :)
I made this for my mother-in-law for Mother’s Day. She said it was possibly the best cake she’s ever eaten, which says it all since she’s 84 years old! I didn’t get to see the cake once it was cut, but she said the layers came out perfect. It was a great cake to make, and as always, Chef John publishes well-tested recipes with clear and detailed instructions. I can not recommend this recipe enough, and I’m already thinking of making it with other fruits (hello - rhubarb!) and even berries. Also, I made it completely by hand like Chef John recommends, and it was no more difficult than using a mixer. This may change the way I bake. Thanks for another great, successful recipe Chef John!
About 3 years ago I found this recipe and made it in October just after picking up a huge bunch of apples from our favorite orchard. My family made me make it every week that month, and it has been our October tradition ever since. Thank you so much for sharing this recipe Chef John, it's amazing!
I grew up eating this. It was my favorite when I was a kid
I did to!! Wonderful!
What a small world
Making this for the third time today! Made it once with yogurt and now with sour cream for the second time and I prefer the flavor with sour cream. Great recipe. Gave some to my dad who said it was the best coffee cake he’s ever had.
"You're the Snake Pliskins of your coffee cake mixins" is my favorite quote from Chef John as of this very moment
I love that you didn’t use a mixer. I avoid baking because I don’t own the typical appliances I see bakers use on tv and RUclips. This inspired me.
Yes!! I agree with you. Our grandmas didn’t use kitchen aids, food processors or electric mixers and they are the very ones who gave us these recipes 🥰 everything can be done without electric appliances
THIS WAS SO DELICIOUS. We seriously ate it in two days. There goes the diet but it was sooo worth it. You can definitely use a little less sugar and it's just fine! Delicious
I love chef john. He has made me good cook. My husband is impressed.
My husband said this is the best thing he’s ever had 😂 thanks chef John!! We can’t stop eating it, we finished half of the pan ourselves in 3 days
Finally someone who shows real portion sizes! 😅❤👏
I have mine in the oven!!! Thanks CHEF JOHN!!! I have only discovered you in the last month and between me and my friends , we have been cooking,baking,roasting,flambé-ing,sauté-ing, grilling, marinating, and chilling..... and always ENJOY!!!! I have found my secret chef, and my husband is loving me like Michelle loves YOU!!!
I made this for Mother’s Day and it was a hit. Everyone loved it!!!!
Thank you!!!!!
This coffee cake was a huge hit with my family. I served it for Easter dinner dessert. Keep in mind that if you're using Greek yogurt, you may need to thin it with some milk or buttermilk. I used Greek and it was a bit hard to spread, but just a little too thick. Next time I'll use 3/4 cup Greek yogurt plus 1/4 cup Buttermilk.
I'm not kidding,...it's eyes roll back in your head delicious! It's easy, and much better tasting than any cake that has icing.
Good served with whipped cream sweetened with a bit of Maple Syrup !!
Making this again for a potluck. No joke, the compliments never stop coming. You da best!
This recipe if sold at a bakery would be a real hit in the community ...it is that good !! ...suggested this to my wife and she aced it ...simple and delicious ...she then made it a second time...tastes the same ...great recipe
I made this today! I used an almond based yogurt substitute for my lactose sensitive partner but it turned out excellent. Thank you!
It’s in the oven right now! I’m so excited, the batter itself was one of the most delicious-tasting batters I have ever had.
Update: absolutely amazing, though I’ve never had a Chef John recipe fail on me
Oh, I'm gonna make this next week, it looks awesome!
Edit: I just baked this, My whole house smells like cinnamon, it's heaven. I'm going to make this all the time from now on! Thanks for the recipe.
This was awesome, made it for my wife for Mother’s Day. For some reason my batter wasn’t as much so I did 1 layer instead. Also skipped walnuts and just put some flour to make it more crumbly
I need this now. Two of my favorite desserts. Anything with apples 🍎 is delicious.
Red delicious!! 🤭👏🏼😉
I LOVE LOVE LOVE the fact that you make things by hand when you can. The best decision you've made
The only thing I can think of right now is how incredible this would go with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream
I HEARD THAT 👍
I love listening to Chef John's soothing, sing-song-y voice on all of these videos.
Everyone in the UK: "Hang on, where's the coffee?"
... *checks wikipedia*
"Coffee cake is any cake flavored with or intended to be eaten with coffee.
British coffee cake is typically a sponge cake flavored with coffee, typically baked in a circular shape with two layers separated by coffee butter icing, which also covers the top of the cake. Walnuts are a common addition. In the United States, coffee cake generally refers to a sweet cake intended to be eaten with coffee or tea (like tea cake).
The American variety is presented in a single layer, flavoured with either fruit or cinnamon, and leavened with either baking soda (or baking powder), which results in a more cake-like texture, or yeast, which results in a more bread-like texture. They may be loaf-shaped, for easy slicing or baked in a Bundt or tube pan."
I wonder how this would work with a British coffee cake?
A11K87 Thanks, I was wondering!
Ahah yeah also, everyone around the rest of the world : "Hang on, how am I supposed to follow try out that recipe without proper measurment units?"
I'm Canadian and coffee cake has coffee here, too.
Maybe throw in some instant coffee with the wet ingredients
How on point!
I have made this delicious cake so many times. Making it once again this morning. It's always a winner! The only change I make is I grate the apples (skins included) as I'm far too impatient to be cutting tiny dices lol. It always turns out fabulous - even when I alternate between yogurt and sour cream, or even pouring (whipping) cream soured with lemon juice. It depends on what's in the fridge. I recommend it to all - as I do ALL of chef John's recipes. Greetings from NZ.
Best voice in the entire universe. I’m fasting with my church but I am going to just make myself suffer because I will never miss a FoodWishes episode!!!

I made this using keto ingredients: almond flour, Swerve brown sugar and Swerve white sugar. I used the measurements called for and used pecans instead of walnuts. Turned out great!!!

Today I learned that coffee cake is a thing. for the whole video I was waiting for him to add coffee as an ingredient, nonetheless it looks delicious and easy to do, thanks chef John!
You never heard of coffee cake before? I'm curious where you are from?
I believe it received the name because it was meant to be served with coffee.
Just now making this today, my only deviation because I didn't have plain yogurt was to use toasted coconut greek yogurt... super pumped for this!
“real people don’t use fake vanilla” and i live by that.
@@itsesraa6050 Use vanilla extract which is very good n real.
Made this today! *It was so flavorful, moist, crunchy and well, simply delicious!* I substituted pecans vs walnut because of allergies to walnuts...which is so weird. *Thank you Chef John!*
If you want to be the Jerry Rice of how fine you dice precook bigger chunks in a pan, let cool, and add to the batter.
I have been baking for years but never did my apple walnut cake come out so soft and moist..
Baked it twice and it was perrrrrrrfect both times.

This is a wonderful recipe. Baked it in small ramekins and then served it as dessert with a scoop of French vanilla ice cream
Made this recipe yesterday for mother’s day and here are my thoughts:
Obviously it was absolutely delicious!! Earned some major Mom points for this one! it wasn’t overly sweet which my parents appreciated and the next day (today) it became even better somehow. So highly recommend making this the night before and letting it sit out covered for a couple hours to a day.
Finally, I was wondering if there was any way i could have more apple flavor in this recipe for the next time i make it as my family and I are big fans of apples in baking. Can I just add another apple to the batter or will that make it too watery?
Just wanted to say thank you very much Chef John for yet another great recipe that somehow manages to convince my family that their high school senior son is not an absolute clutz in the kitchen!!!
Tried this recipe for Mother’s Day brunch. Turned out great. Will definitely make it again.
The walnuts are also a superfood which makes this a semi superfood.
Cinnamon is also quite healthy, and an apple a day keeps the doctor away, so this is one of the best things you can eat.
Just a shame that the amount of sugar neutralizes all goodness. But apart from that it's a masterpiece
Great technique! Tried and came out good even without the eggs into the wet ingredients.
Instead of butter I used vegetable oil.
I admire the way you baked with simple tools. These days you get to see all kinds of high tech electric equipment in videos.
Thanks Chef!
When I make this, I’ll serve it with custard mixed with some whipped cream. :-P
Nice.
Warm Bird's Custard!
I tried your recipe and it was great. It's very similar to a coffee cake my mother made us and her Bridge playing friends in the 1960s. She often served it with whipped cream for dessert or with butter on it fresh out of the oven, no microwaves, on Saturday mornings. Either way it was a real treat.

Chico Deluxe no, haha it’s uncommon where I’m from
You're the Duke of new York! A number one!
I made this for mother's day. It came out AMAZING. The only issue I had was it took almost an hour and a half in the oven (at 40 mins, the center was almost like custard)! I was using a glass baking dish (8x10) so maybe there were some conductivity issues? I was super worried it was going to dry out, but it was perfect, just took longer than I would have ever thought. Anyone have thoughts to why it took almost 2x the expected baking time? Also, I bake bread and haven't ever noticed my oven being wonky or anything.
Edit: I am 99% sure I didn't mess up on any of the proportions or anything, that was the first thing I thought of when it wasn't close to done at 40 mins.
He sits because you used a pan 2” too short. Was supposed to be in a 9X12” pan. Pan size will always affect your cooking time.

Stephanie, if you do try, let us know how it turned out! My sister-in-law is allergic to nuts, too.
Sounds good. Alternately, apricots pair well with almonds.
If you wanted to make something very similar to Chef John's version, you can substitute pecans for the walnuts. They are close enough in texture and taste that I would use that substitution even without an allergy if I happen to have pecans but not walnuts.
This recipe is honestly so great. The cake and crumble go so well together and I'm sure they'd have been amazing individually too. I was a bit low on walnuts so added in almonds instead and now I'm not sure if I want to make it with just walnuts.
I think I dont know what a coffee cake is, because I was all the time waiting for coffee as an ingredient. Even rewatched because I thought I missed the moment Chef John added it.
Kauer Cappellari I think it’s called coffee cake because is something you can eat with coffee, like for breakfast but I could be wrong. The coffee cakes, that I’ve tried don’t have any “coffee” taste. So I don’t think they have coffee in it.
