I was recalled to the Btry from 1/4 the 1st week of July, 1968. G/3/12 was then at Khe Sanh. The next day we formed a convoy and embarked for Ca Lu on Route 9. Our convoy cleared the ridge just east of Khe Sanh when the first round hit over us in the river. Co Roc's 2nd round hit the ridge above Route 9. The 3rd round went into the river. The convoy stopped and the troups danced on the hwy because Co Roc could not hit us. Too bad for Co Roc.

The film starts out with the question "Was Khe Sanh worth it?" What a telling introduction to the Vietnam war.
Nothing about the Vietnam was worth it. Vietnam was a war of egotists like McNamara who did not have to go to war themselves, but somehow felt that sending others to fight and die would give themselves prestige.
Wow! what a firework display...This was my old stompin' grounds....I have a few pictures from this area... August 1967 is when I got my Purple Heart...We had to stay awake almost 24/7...incoming every few minutes....

My point was: that the NVA used Khe Sanh as a diversion for their Tet Offensive... but nowhere in this documentary is that ever mentionned !
In my opinion: if the U.S. had developed a network of snipers in southern laos, they could have shut-down the Ho Chi Minh Trail ... but instead they wasted most of their money on expensive and ineffective air-interdictions operations.
My Marine was there. He was a leader.
Very Successful,Real professionals.The final part of training was going out on a real mission against their enemy where once in a while they got killed..They sometimes even snatched a enemy right in his backyard.
The NVA learned about Marines at Khe Sanh!

The NLF were aware of this racial tension among American troops, and the leaflets that they distributed told Black GIs to fight for democracy in their own country rather than in suppressing it in Southeast Asia. The NLF held a cautious policy towards engaging in combat with blacks. In the early years, they were reluctant to attack areas of Saigon that had a heavy concentration of blacks, while in non-combat situations there was an ‘unwritten agreement’ between blacks and individual NLF's.

The NVA pretty much had their asses kicked at Khe Sanh whether it was a diversion or a main attack we will never know

What do you think the U.S. should have done to win the war ?
From what I know, US cut off supply to SVN way before the war ended. Pilots told me there were Napalms left behind, but without primers. They also told that their F5 don't have enough fuel for oneway trip from their base to 17th parallel. If given F4, some of them might break the rule and bomb the heck out of Hanoi. A CIA agent came and escorted Thieu out. He might be shot if he resisted. I think he should go down with the ship as a captain, but he had family.
I agree with you that they should have shut down the Ho Chi Minh trail. The US leadership would not allow it. Supposedly we had signed agreements that Laos and Cambodia would be neutral. North Vietnam completely ignored the agreements while our leadership stuck to it. Only one of many reasons why the GIs who fought felt they had to fight a war they weren't allowed to win.
Yeah, that's about what I get too. Seems no one remembers Thieu and his ineffective leadership, and the fact that he rolled out and into Thailand just before the south collapsed, all the time screaming about how the US had betrayed him. Couple that with the fact that they had the manpower and logistics in place to defend Hue and other places close to the DMZ, and pockets of resistance, who fought bravely, were all that was left. Most others who fled were massacred. Always stand and fight!
Someone should make a Movie on Khe Sanh.
SVN BietDongQuan(Ranger) and Linh Du(Paratrooper) are tuff. They're called BongMaBienGio(Ghosts) for a reason. If the regular army can't do it, they will get the job done. If a base was in trouble, they were called to rescue. You rarely see them because they never home. They continue to fight with injuries. Most of them graduated top of class at Vo Bi Dalat(VN West Point). Their battles were so fearceful that they had verbal Wills to divide little belongings they carried before each battle.
I know generals and high ranking officers who refused to leave, fought until the last second and died. There are many people pull back into the jungles and fought for another 10 yrs. SVN soldiers did not run as you think, they were ordered to drop their weapons and go home. Biet Dong Quan (Ranger) were sent back out to delay NVA after they reached Saigon. Most of what we see here are regular Army. It's hard to find footage about Ranger and Paratrooper. Ask the NVA what they think about them.
The War was won on the battlefield the US was forcing the NV to fight out in the open towards the end. The political powers in Washington gave up on the War which led to its end. The North was at the point of surrending until they became aware of all the protesting and political unrest which led to them just waiting for the US to grow tired of the War and leave. This same strategy is being used today in the Middle East by the opposition.
You are right ! It would have been very difficult !
But without attempting to shut-down the Ho Chi Minh Trail directly, there was little point in even fighting the war... as the communist could infiltrate whenever and wherever they wanted..... undoing previous american-victories along the way!
Vietnam and Chile are the only 2 countries in the world that have such strange geographical-shape - they are both long, narrow countries with endless forested borders.

I spoke with a Devil Dog in the gym that fought here. His words were "this was one time the Army saved the Marines". He was in pretty bad shape (medically discharged). I only saw him once but I wanted to get as much information as I could from him. What was so important about this hill? Was it ego?

You might read about Operation Lam Sam 719. ( its in Wikipedia) An operation to cut the Ho Chi Minh trail carried out by the South Vietnamese in 1971. It ended in a disaster for the south, mostly due to inept leadership, planning and communication. I think the US could have sucessfully have done it much earlier in the war, for a different outcome of the war.
The sad part is the US lost the war, the truth is that 100s of thousands of innocent civlians died at the hands of the NVA and VC.
It's sad that some people still don't know who won the war........
The NVA had thousands of troops dedicated to protecting the trails. It would be almost impossible to place, resupply, and provide any type of air support for that many snipers.
see how much general population knows about war. People are having argument about the purpose of war and if they won or not.. i feel sorry for soldiers who have to fight for greedy bastards sitting in their safe shells...
Vietnam today is by no means in bad shape. Sure, it is no S.Korea in terms of economic development and standard of living, but to be honest, I felt a better vibe (mind you, as a tourist) in Vietnam than in S.Korea. People are more relaxed and less obssesed with consumerism.

Again, our government did not defend those who were sent in harms way. I was a Huey door gunner in '69-'70 down south.

What let the American soldiers down in my humble opinion was their leadership ,from the white house to the generals.The VC were a formidable foe they didnt have the fire power as the americans which is probably just as well.To beat an enemy on his own soil one must duplicate the way his enemy wages war.Duplicate and master it .The American soldiers failed to respect the VC fighting tactics and ultimately suffered heavy casualties.
@METALLIKIDofTBR could probably build one with help of an engineer and a machine shop, building the rounds would be a little more difficult but probably not too hard either.
Technology from that era is simple and even a regular jackoff with a fabrication lab can build production quality items nowadays... including firearms if you have the know how and skillset... just be careful with the math on pressure values or you'll blow your face off
@solohoh MacArthur advocated using nuclear weapons against China in the Korean War as well. Just because one person says something rationally in hindsight, doesn't mean that he's a genius.
MacArthur was an excellent military commander, but politicians and other military advisers had good reason at the time not to listen to the guy.
Another opportunity came with the US invasion of Cambodia, it totaly disrupted the NVA base camps, headquaters and supply depots. Had the US kept it up and kept going the NVA would have completely have lost their sactuaries. By then it was too late and Nixon even told the world the date when we would leave, so the NVA could wait it out and get ready for their return. What if it had it been done right from the beginning. That is again why so many GIs felt they weren't allowed to win the war.
The Viet Cong was a rebel group in the south that was armed and funded by the NVA. Some were patriots but most were forced to fight, like Americans.
Many of the VC were Vietnamese who had resettled in the north after the accords were signed. They were trained equipped and sent back south where many of the former Viet Minh remained. That was the basis for the organization. Johnson and McNamera set the rules for bombing and anything within 30 miles of Hanoi, 30 miles from the Chinese border or 10 miles around Haiphong was off limits. SAM site could not be attacked unless they fired first, North Vietnamese air bases couldn't be attacked.

Actually the VC and NVA suffered many more deaths than the US.

Johnson and McNamera were both afraid of antagonizing the Russians or China. They also abided by a treaty with Laos and Cambodia that they were neutral countries while the North Vietnamese disregarded the treaty. It didn't make much sense to those in the military as well, but the White House considered the Generals as idiots and didn't know anything about the nuances of politics. Most all of the policies that Johnson and McNamera implimented for the military flew in the face of military doctrine

@twosure94 when i said "brave enough" I think you know what wrong in this war. Why is VC braver than G.I in a forest? Because all of them think the forest is belong to them so do the country. Their belief seem like a religion. So i think US army did everything they could, they just didn't have a real reason for the war.

South VN soldiers thought they were fighting a war with one hand tight behind their back.
The US military won every battle. The US politician (Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, McNamara) got out played to lose the war. South Vietnam could be like South Korea today, modern and prosperous, had the US politicians ever read Sun Tzu's Art of War.

And Vietnamese fishing boats out at sea got their heading way before they arrived above Hanoi. That's why so many were shot down. They were prepared and waiting for them.
