Is This Gillette Razor Better than a Vintage Fatboy?!

  • I started using my vintage 1966 Gillette Slim adjustable this past week for every shave, and it is a fantastic razor! It may be better than my much-loved Fatboy. So, if you're in the market for a vintage razor, take a look at these. They cost way less than Fatboys and might just shave better.

    You know, Sinatra:
    It was extremely eventful and difficult Friday for me. I can barely keep my eyes open and I don't have any other thoughts except how tired I am. But 10 minutes of you talking funny things and shaving with good razor made me feel calm, peaceful and lightly cheerful. Thank for that! Really.
    All I want now is to shave with my Edwin Jagger and Astra blade and go to sleep. Amaizing how much you can give us by just being nice friend. I hope that our little community gives you something similar

    Great shave. The Slim is indeed a good shaver. I have 2 of them. One is a 1964 that is the 1st new razor I ever purchased, the other is a 1965 that I got for a H.S. graduation present. I still use both of them fairly regularly.
    For my beard and skin type, I find that my Slims are slightly more efficient than my Fat Boy on the same settings.
    I think the popularity of the Fat Boy is due to exactly what you said. The Fat Boy was produced from 1958 (D-3) until 1962 (H-1) = 3 3/4 yrs. while the Slim Adjustable was produced from 1961 (G-3) until 1968 (N-$) = 8 1/2 yrs. Fewer Fat Boys produced equals more demand, LOL.
    My perfect razor would be the Slim with a Fat Boy style handle diameter.
    Have a great and safe weekend.

    IMO, the slim adjustable is THE go to vintage model for a de newby. The build quality is top notch. It can take some patience to find one in excellent condition at a low price; but it's worth it. I lurked on the auction site for several months before I found one that was listed in as found condition; meaning that it had not been cleaned up thoroughly.
    There is literally NO pitting on this thing. It cleaned up marvelously. I ran it through the dishwasher repeatedly, set it out to dry on a warm day, lubricated it with mineral oil. It's practically good as new.
    It is a great platform for dialing in the level of aggression that works for you; and for trying out a variety of blades. All of my other vintage razors are sidelined by this one. No comment on the fat boy, as I have yet to try one.

    I've got both and like you, I don't know why the Fat Boy gets all the light. A 1963 Slim set on 6 with a Nacet blade is the best shave I've had to date. The Fat Boy is a great shave on 6 with a Nacet too but there is just something about the Slim. Used the Slim last night with Brut and almost wanted to go threw the entire shave a second time because it was so good. Great video as usual.

    +6 month review... since finding your channel and switching from cartridges to DE shaving... I have not had a single ingrown hair in the last 3-4 month. It's like freakin' magic! Of course, I also switched to Barbasol as a quick shave option... Not adventurous - just sticking to different Proraso products because they are available and work great. Aftershaves - Pinaud/Clubman products.

      I think there’s a happy medium for earlier model Gillette Slim adjustable’s because while they streamlined the process better with the Slim model… they were constantly trying to produce the same razor cheaper which leads me to believe that the earlier Slim’s would be ideal. I could be wrong though. I just bought a $60 E3 1959 Fatboy off EBay listed as *Excellent condition, fully functional* so hopefully I get lucky because the pictures look great

    I have a 1961 slim adjustable, and a 1960 Fatboy, both in excellent original shape. I switch back and forth. I find the Fatboy shaves a little more aggressively. One click more aggressive than the slim on the same number. My preference is the slim as it is easier to maneuver, and I like the longer handle. Love the vids!

    It's funny, really. I just acquired a gorgeous NOS 1966 slim off the Bay. It's sort of a tribute to my dad. 1966 is the year he would've turned 13, and the one I found was an L1, and his birthday is in February, so it's almost like I got the razor he could've gotten as his first razor for his birthday. I just shave with it for the first time yesterday, on setting 7, and Oh My Stars and Garters, that was the smoothest and most comfortable shave *ever*. That razor, on setting 7, with the made in India Gillette Wilkinson Sword blade, felt smoother than even my Merkur 34C. Even my 59 Fatboy isn't as comfortable. Absolutely unreal. The Slim definitely doesn't get the respect or love it deserves.

    Yes, it is. Slim better than FatBoy that is. Both are good though. For some reason the two Black Beauties I have are not doing it for me, still too rough on setting 1-2.... but it had by a mile the longest production of the adjustable Gillette adjustables, so it must just be me I guess. I am amazed by the quality of shave vintage razors give. 100 year old Gillettes with an open comb and an awesome and mild shave. I shave mild, 3-4 on the Slim, but that one Old Type open comb is an awesome cool item in my razor rotation.

    I have a Merkur Progress, and a Parker Varient. I can honestly say the Vintage Gillette Fatboy razor, and the Slim adjustable give me a far more comfortable shave than my modern adjustable razors. The modern adjustables shave just fine, but they are more aggressive, much more blade feel, and as a result just a bit of razor burn.

    My old man had the '58 FatBoy from the Marines in 58-62. Played with it so much as a kid. Tried shaving with it when I was 19 or 20. Didn't like it at the time. Probably didn't understand the dial angle setting enough then to get a comfortable shave. I think i had it on 9...lol. Dont know what my kid brother did with it from my Mom's medicine cabinet after both of them passed but I want it.
    Anyways was always a Mach 3 guy. Got sick of the cost. Took up or tried to take up straight razor shaving in my mid 20s since an ex gf got me a Dovo I wanted then. Back then very limited info on proper honing. All i had was Lynn Abrams instructionals. Got the Norton 1/4/8k combo. I would spend hours, days, trying to get an edge right. It would be tuggy but not sharp enough even after being stropped. My ex wife got me a silver tipped badger brush when we were first dating. I used it maybe 5 times in 10 years when we were married. Got a Fromm 72R straight. Still tuggy. So I gave up and just buzzed my face all through my 30s for 10 years and any razor action I wanted for either my face or manscsping was the Mach 3 cartridges. I learned to strop them on denim and leather along with my kitchen knives. I have cartridges that are over 15 years old. Lubricating strip gone but still maintained sharp.
    Now in my 40s. Anyways. My Wahl clippers crapped out in '20 and I just needed to maintain zero gap them right. But my autistic kid won't do haircuts. So I sought out to get some low decible cordless clippers Stylecraft Sabers and Edgers along with Oster 76's . Been on a barbering kick ever since. Figured out a great honing progression. Have done 50 vintage restorations and they all shave great. Filarmonica. DublDucks, Dovo, Wade and Butcher, Wolstenholm, Morley, Elliott, Sheffield, Palmera. A few nice framebacks.
    Have a Latherking machine. All kinds of soaps from PAA, Sterling, ILR, Proraso, Cremo, and more coming. Nice custom shaving bowls and scuttles. Even made a customized woodworking project to hold all my razors and soaps. Barber chair.
    Just scored 4 Gillette '62's DE Slims for $40 on Ebay this week. Tried it for the first time this Friday after i polished and cleaned them up. WOW! JUST WOW! WTF have I been missing? Best and smoothest shave of my entire life! Plain old 7 o'clock blades. On a 7 or 6 I couldn't even feel a weeks worth of hair being cleaved off my face with just a feather lite touch and stroke on my face. I had to double check in the mirror to make sure hair was being removed. I was BBS except in 2 spots after the first pass everywhere. Dialed it down to a 3, touched up and smooth as a baby's 🍑 Now I see what all the hype is about.

This keeps the nickle bright, and prevents any soap scum from accumulating. I store my TTO's with the doors slightly ajar, on my dresser with the short end of the head facing down... to dry.

    Aesthetically I am drawn to my Gillette Black Beauty more than the Slim or Fatboy. For me it just looks cooler.But love all three just the same.

    Most of the Gillette razors are good. Gillette new open comb, tto non adjustable ones, adjustables and even Gillette tech.
    People talk about the Fatboy due to the weight. It's one of the most heavy razors Gillette made.

  • @washimbond714
    @washimbond714 4 года назад

    Hey listen folks Lot of yall saying Slim or fat in case of safety razor. What really matters exactly is Material and balanced length not too heavy & not too light. There are many heavy razors which you need to ensure balanced speed with. But light weights are more balanced in my guess because you control it not as your speed.
    The heavyweights are better for those who grow longer beards & want to shave with less irritations.
    Go for 70gram to 80gram razors in case you are confused of. But for stubble beards Lightweight is definitely best option. Different people might find it opposed. Whatever I said the acqurate I guess.

    Actually I prefer the Slim over the Fatboy but with not with an Astra blade I prefer either of these - Feather, Polsilver, Personna and the Rapira Platinum LUX - mind you I have been using the Super Slim adjustable (Black handle 109) quite a bit just lately also with those blades. I meant to add that after 50 it's a bit downhill with the skin in general so you need to be more careful now - me I am pushing 73!!

    Great shave as usual. I love the vintage based shaves. You asked what a videos of a vintage shave will be like in 50 years. It won't be the 25 blade heated Gillettes that make coffee and sings you to sleep and it won't be a Harry's or Dollar Shave Club kit. It'll be a guy using a 100 year old Slim adjustable or a 150 year old Gillette old style. Those things will last way longer than civilization.
    BTW- I went ahead and pulled the trigger on the Slim. Now I'm just waiting on the mail.

      @SinatraLennon  5 лет назад

    Just finished my shave today, using one of my Slims. I accumulated the usual assortment of Schicks & Gillettes and wanted a Fat Boy - got my chance with one in great condition & at the right price. It shaves just fine, but my Slims and Super Adjustables are more nimble and not as awkward as the clunky Fat Boy.
    The correct answer: The Slim is Definitely better than the Fat Boy. The Fat Boy has assembled a cult following among collectors and vintage shavers who have ascribed a mythical magic to it.

    • @SinatraLennon
      @SinatraLennon  4 года назад

      Yeah, I’m not quite sure where that absolute love of the fat boy came from. I do absolutely love a couple of mine though. I guess if you get a really good one and it speaks to you, then you start preaching to the masses about it.

    Hello SinatraLennon, I recently purchased the Wilkinsons safety razor (You reviewed a few weeks ago) as I wanted to get into using a safety razor. I just had my first shave with it and it didn't go well. All was good on my face, but I went to shave my neck and all hell broke loose. Ended up having to use my Gillette cardridge to finish the job. Will my skin get used to the safety razor? I have a very sensitive neck so I don't know if the issue was the blade itself or me having no practice. Thanks

    • @SinatraLennon
      @SinatraLennon  5 лет назад +1

      The neck is always more of a problem. Go very lightly and only shave with the grain on your neck. Also do only one pass.

    • @greg6162
      @greg6162 3 года назад

      Yeah you’ve probably figured this out by now but there is and adjustment coming from cartridges. When I switched I had the same issues and what I realized, is that even though you’re aware that you shouldn’t put pressure on the razor like a cartridge… muscle memory can have doing it without realizing it. Just touch the razor to your skin with the correct angle and then basically just pull straight down. Obviously being careful but it really is touching the razor to your skin at all levels and moving the razor parallel with your face.

    My theory: Brut burned You because of the slim adjustable - on equal blade gap Fatboy wins, it is slightly smoother in my experience.
