Over 100 horses died in the process of filming, most put down after being injured. Director Francis X Bushman said "If it limped, they shot it." The direction of the chariot scene was largely done by Second Unit Director B.Reeves Eason. While the death of a stuntman during an initial attempt at filming the chariot race is well known the whole production seems to have been Occupational Health and Safety minefield.

Wow, to think the movie was born out of such tremendous sacrifices! It's both humbling and awe-inspiring!
