    I have had the dreadful job of cleaning and dusting a vastly full china display cabinet . Play this delightful set has made the time fly pass and the chore quite pleasant

    In the USA we had absolutely no idea that the songs we were familiar with were often re-recorded by their original performers in other languages. This was common in Europe at the time but unknown in America.

    Tony Hatch probably enthusiastically loved 'Downtown' translated into three languages after the English monster hit he created for Petula Clark.

      They aren't really "translated" as the meaning of each translation are incredibly different from the original and really only maintain the original melody, but not the meaning or intent. ;). The french version is about a lost love and is actually quite sad despite having an upbeat tone. I cannot remember what the German or Italian ones mean offhand but remember they were quite different as well.

      @@jaelynrae5493 The Italian one, is similar to the French one, it's kinda sad , and it talks about a summer love

      The German version is also not an translation one-on-one. In a way they choose to do the same 'story of the song', but as seeing it what it is to be 'down town' in Germany. Nice translation with respect to the original lyrics.

    Hola a Todos, le falto cantarla en español, hubiese sido aún más conocida y popular la canción, de lo que ya lo es en los países de habla española. Es una canción repleta de optimismo. Saludos,

    I note that the German version uses the original English word "downtown" while the Italian and French versions use those languages completely.

    Did Petula Clark actually speak Italian ,French and German?

    • @hebneh
      @hebneh 11 месяцев назад +1

      She speaks French fluently since her husband was French and she lived in France for many years, but she always had a very strong English accent. I doubt she speaks the other languages.
