Going to be a bit of a nerd here, but swords like that historically were worn on the side not the back because of this reason. Most blades couldnt be unsheathed from the back. I honestly have no idea how this became a sword trope though.

Wearing a sword on your back was actually very rare historically. There are ways to do it, though. The best one I remember seeing was on a some medieval LARPing channel a few years ago, where they made a back scabbard with a slit on the side near the opening. It was too thin a gap for the thicker base of the blade near the hilt to slip through, ensuring that the sword was still secure when sheathed, but the thinner part near the tip could slide right through the space, making easier to unsheathe. They even added sort of a little built-in backboard to help guide the tip into the gap when putting the sword away.
I remember reading that wearing on your back was mainly done by either squires or when just traveling with a couple swords but not when intended to actually use it
@@AlwaysBolttheBird I knew this could never be done cause years ago I tried this same attempt with a katana sword and couldn’t ever be done. I knew this wasn’t realistic for years ! Split scabbard. Split the top side of the scabbard along only enough length for the blade to clear. Can't be easily seen and allows it to be carried on your back and properly drawn/sheathed with one hand. For extra security, put a few magnets at the top of the sheathe with complimentary ones in the cross guard. This will allow you to move with a fair amount of vigour and not have the sword come loose, but not so strong that it will prevent a draw. Form and function.
i remember shadiversity making a scabbard specifically for back draw; it was split at the top so you can tilt the tip of the sword out when you draw, but his also had a guide boars of sorts at the top so you could also get the sword back in blindly, iirc
No it wouldn't, your arm from the rear of your bicep to your palm is not longer than the majority of sword blades. Making it further down would not at all solve this issue because you would not be able to reach over your back far enough to make a difference. Even if you place the blade over your opposite shoulder and completely throw yourself off balance it wouldn't work because if the scabbard is rigid and unmoving on your back you won't be able to pull it out through the wood and if it is designed to rotate and move on your back that rotation will make it so that the effective distance the blade moves within the scabbard is less. You would either have to make a scabbard with some sort of cut in it that allows the blade to be rotated within the scabbard without having to pull the entirety of the blade from the scabbard.
@@gipsymelody1268If the scabbard rotates that means it is moving with the blade. Cloud's weapon is probably the most realistic despite being the most unrealistic in terms of size. Guy just wears a giant magnet to stick the sword on his back.
Geralt in the books actually carries silver sword on his back and steel sword on his belt. If he is gonna use silver sword for monsters, he loosens up his chest belt to lower the scabbard down, and witchers are tall and skinny in the book, making it easier to pull out a sword.
There is a sword channel where they have a back mounted scabbard and address this problem. They have a slit on the sword wielding side. This allows a draw without having to clear the scabbard length. The downside is a specific draw style every time. I am sorry I don't remember the channel name. The host is a chubby British guy usually clad in ring mail and leather. In fact, long swords usually have a sheath cut off and a simple 5 or 10 cm long opening,(I don't mean that they actually put their procrastination on their backs, I just gave a possible solution.) So he can pull the sword out of its place, it's very simple.
In fact, no they don’t. Real long swords were never drawn from the back like this, it only happens in fantasy. The only time they would be worn on the back was for travel perhaps.
@zynthio I understand what you're saying honestly, but in reality there are swords that actually have openings on the sides like the big curved swords that need a opening to pull the whole sword out, I didn't mean that they were putting the swords on their backs Actually I said the idea they could do it and it would work, put a normal sword on your back and pull it out smoothly.
@@DIABAN-DIAMAND no they don’t. Most swords, even regular length swords, were carried on the waist and not the back, because it’s easier and faster to draw them from there. Even a short length sword would be hard and inefficient to pull from your back

I recently got a master sword replica and realized it was impossible too. Looked up on google if they even wore swords on their backs back then. Saw that no. They didn’t lol
@@JRiley187 the only people who wore swords on the back are the Celts surprisingly, because they used short swords and even then the only evidence we have they did is from little stone soldier statues found at a burial
@@JRiley187 The general rule of thumb is if your sword is longer than your arm, then it is physically impossible to back-draw it from a standard scabbard. Now, depending on how much longer the sword is than your arm, it IS possible to back-draw some swords that are longer than your arm if you bend over and draw them over your shoulder instead of straight up. But it's not recommended as it is highly impractical and most swords you would want to do this with are still too long even for this draw method. There's a reason Aragorn from Lord of The Rings kept Anduril's Scabbard attached to his horse's saddle. In that movie, you never saw Viggo with that sword on his back because it was too friggin' long. It was always either sheathed under the saddle or in his hand. From what I understand, swords were sheathed on the back, primarily, for traveling. Especially long-distance travelling. However, if there was a good chance that the swordsman was going to need his sword for defense, even travelling, it would either be worn on the hip or, like Aragorn, attached under the saddle of their horse. However, for populated traversal, as in through a town, you would do an Aragorn and either keep it stowed under your saddle or firmly in your hand. Why? Just because you can't draw your sword from your back doesn't someone else can't. The positioning of the sword on the back makes it relatively easy for someone to just walk up behind you and steal your sword if your scabbard doesn't have a locking mechanism to keep the sword in the scabbard which, let's be honest, most scabbards don't.
@@Grimsly3736 Not exactly. It was at least a thing in Japan too, with Nodachi. But if you were carrying a nodachi on your back you probably also had a katana or a wakazashi on your hip for quick-drawing
This is why I've adopted Shadiversity's "Shabbard" into my fantasy designs - A practical backscabbard that allows the wearer go more easily draw and sheath a sword on their back.
This is because that is Masahiro Sakurai, and the man not only is he very obsessed with the details for his works, but he is able to respond to his fans however he wishes, because he is technically not a part of Nintendo, so they cannot chain him down with their problems and business practices.
That’s why long sword scabbards were worn on the hilt. Most of us theorize that Kirby has a pocket universe inside him. This concept has always been left ambiguous for the sake of gameplay charm and creativity. In one interview, Masahiro Sakurai stated that Kirby’s abilities are more magical than scientific in nature.
Fun fact canonically Kirby has infinite space inside him also the inside of his mouth is actually a very wholesome and comforting place as explained by the Kirby manga meaning anyone inside Kirby’s mouth is technically alive and in basicly comfort
Carrying a sword on the back is something basically unheard of in history. We do have a few examples of illustrations of it throughout history, but in general it was extremely uncommon.
Isn’t there a RUclipsr that made a prototype sword that could be unsheathed from your back because it has like a slit in the side? I can’t remember his name though, but I thought it was cool.
All you do is modify the sheave split it between quarter to halfway down on one side. It's easy. The slit only has to exist deep enough to let your arm clear the blade.
I ran into that problem as a cosplayers too haha. Such a nice conversation. Good to hear some nice things about the internet for once. Thanks for sharing
They explained the kirby thing before Link. Kirby's stomach is an entire pocket dimension that just nothing but the things he's eaten floating in the void. They don't even die in there, they're just perpetuated.
So, there are scabbards with a slot at the top so that the sword tip can swing out of the last few inches/cm. It's an engineering version of what the animators did. Instead of having a sword clip through the scabbard, clip the scabbard open at that end.
it would be interesting if the sword sort of acted like a lightsaber when it becomes unsheathed. Like the sheath has a stopper inside half way that causes the sword to retract itself when it reaches that point. When the cosplayer starts unsheathing the sword, the sword builds itself as he goes and is able to fully remove it from the cover without getting stuck!
As a fellow Link cosplayer. When you spin the sword around you have to flip it down the ricasso to hold it before sliding in. If the blade is weighted properly, it should swing in your hand handle up before the tip points into the scabbard.
There are (at least) 2 solutions. (a) cut the sheath left top corner, so the swordman can move the sword up at the end of the movement. (b) Hold the sheath as a belt on the left side.
Ok but can we talk about how the sword getting stuck and the way he reacted were so in character for Link?

@@belikepraj how can u sue every cosplayer in this world lol
@@jessicaregina1956 it's supposed to be a joke
I thought they'd reply with "well, Link has longer arms" 😂
Cloud's weapon is probably the most realistic despite being the most unrealistic in terms of size. Guy just wears a giant magnet to stick the sword on his back.
It’s because kirby has a universe for a stomach. Im not joking that’s official lore.
Bc he is actually galactus. He needs to eat everything for nutrients 😊
Geralt in the books actually carries silver sword on his back and steel sword on his belt. If he is gonna use silver sword for monsters, he loosens up his chest belt to lower the scabbard down, and witchers are tall and skinny in the book, making it easier to pull out a sword.
In books Geralt stored one of his swords on his horse while wearing the other one
In games , mostly in witcher 3
U can see hes hands giving small push to make it easier to unsheathe and sheath
Still not enough at some points
@@陈凯文-n1h Yeah using Geralt as an example was quite poor since they have added the animation of him changing the angle of the scabbard.
Sakurai is so detailed and intentional with how his smash characters move. It's amazing to me
There is a sword channel where they have a back mounted scabbard and address this problem. They have a slit on the sword wielding side. This allows a draw without having to clear the scabbard length. The downside is a specific draw style every time.
I am sorry I don't remember the channel name. The host is a chubby British guy usually clad in ring mail and leather. He wears glasses and has a goatee. Good channel for historical and fantasy weapons.
shadiversity is the channel name he's Australian and he's the brother of another RUclipsr called draw with jazza.
@@DOG-MEAT Thank you. Thats him alright.
@@DOG-MEAT no way, I've watched Jazza since he uploaded the dancing monkey about 10 years ago and I never know they're brothers
@D3x5t4r yeh they have done some videos with each other but they had a falling out after shad became an AI "artist" and on a live stream he had a small argument with him jazza saying it takes no skill to make ai "art".
SHABBARD
Thats why back scabbards were very rare
Shadiversity did a functional back scabbard and he had a slot about 2/3 of the way up that he could pull the sword sideways after pulling it out
Yep that why most swordman wear the shealth around there belt instead of their back
In fact, long swords usually have a sheath cut off and a simple 5 or 10 cm long opening,(I don't mean that they actually put their procrastination on their backs, I just gave a possible solution.)
So he can pull the sword out of its place, it's very simple.
watch the first video that comes up when you search "drawing a sword from your back" lol
@@DIABAN-DIAMAND there are no sword scabbards like that
@@DIABAN-DIAMAND no they don’t. Most swords, even regular length swords, were carried on the waist and not the back, because it’s easier and faster to draw them from there. Even a short length sword would be hard and inefficient to pull from your back
in kirby squeak squad it's shown that Kirbys stomach is basically a pocket dimension so where he can either store things for later use or turn it into a star to spit back out as a projectile weapon he can also just disintegrate anything he eats if he wants
It is a fantasy game, this is how it is possible
Then shortly after they sued the cosplayer into oblivion.
Man Link's arms must be really flexible if he can pull that off lol.
Fun fact: You can like comments by double tapping them, but by triple-tapping them you can als-reply😂
Sakurai is just the goat
As an Animator I can confirm this is one of the hardest things to animate.
“This link cosplayer went viral because of one big issue”
He’s right handed?
People forget or never knew link was left handed.
Link was right handed in BOTW and TOTK
@@Escavalier-c4x link was right handed when they put the games on the Wii, as most people are right handed. Twilight princess was the first game to have him right handed on the Wii, as the GameCube version he was still left handed. They just never changed it back to left.
Kirby can fit all that food in his mouth because he is in a constant state of doing his best and being a silly little guy. I hope this helps.
This creates a sick opportunity to pull the sword really hard and fast and let go so it flies out to be caught instead, which arguably is +20 style points with a +10 buff if you do a really cool spinny move as you catch it.
Shadiversity has gone into depth on how to make a back scabbard work. Interesting stuff.
@ well I was lied to and Ganon totally kicked my ass because of it lol
@@dragon12234 I was meaning more so in the context of battle ready carrying, should’ve clarified
So sad that Sakurai’s show is over :(
This is why I've adopted Shadiversity's "Shabbard" into my fantasy designs - A practical backscabbard that allows the wearer go more easily draw and sheath a sword on their back.
eve though i think he already is, Sakurai deserves immortality.. he's such a good guy
This is because that is Masahiro Sakurai, and the man not only is he very obsessed with the details for his works, but he is able to respond to his fans however he wishes, because he is technically not a part of Nintendo, so they cannot chain him down with their problems and business practices.
Shadiversity designed a whole back scabbard for longswords
@@Blazzes1001 That's right. He made a functional real life one
Kirby fits that much food becuase he is literally a god. A physical manifestation of the void. Its why he has such an unbelievable appetite
Still a good skit, if u showed me that I wouldn’t have thought he was tryna take it out, that’s something link would actually do
Fun fact canonically Kirby has infinite space inside him also the inside of his mouth is actually a very wholesome and comforting place as explained by the Kirby manga meaning anyone inside Kirby’s mouth is technically alive and in basicly comfort
And this is why a sword slung across the back only works if it's not kept in a normal sheath.
In Witcher 3, they don't even hide the fact that the sword literally clips with the scabbard everytime the player draw/sheath it.
Carrying a sword on the back is something basically unheard of in history. We do have a few examples of illustrations of it throughout history, but in general it was extremely uncommon.
Isn’t there a RUclipsr that made a prototype sword that could be unsheathed from your back because it has like a slit in the side? I can’t remember his name though, but I thought it was cool.
yes there is. Shad Brooks is his name
Kirby mouth is an actual infinite pocket
Let's all remember that link was always originally left-handed before the Wii came out anyway
Kirby is kinda a space god... He could destroy planets but he'd rather eat food, hang out with friends and nap.
Kirby is a sentient Bag of Holding
All you do is modify the sheave split it between quarter to halfway down on one side. It's easy. The slit only has to exist deep enough to let your arm clear the blade.
FUN FACT- in LARP, we actually have back-mounted sword holders! But they're not scabbards- they're basically two hooks that hold the cross-guard.
Idea make the sword and scabbard slightly smaller like an inch or two not enough to notice but just enough to make it possible to grab the sword
There's a ton of little Kirby's inside of the big Kirby. Russian nesting doll situation.
We not gonna talk about how insanely impossible it is to put it back in it's sheath in that position? Cool, cool, cool.
I always wondered how people in movies and games make getting swords out of a scabbard on their back look easy.
Lmao its a running joke in the armed martial arts community too, especially in HEMA
Well this is going to make all the historical weapons and martial arts youtubers happy
I wouldve loved if they just responded with "its a magical sword"
