I agree. Before that time the New York Philharmonic with William Vacchiano was amazing. I was in the NYC all city orchestra in 1983. We did a joint concert with the New York Philharmonic with Zubin Mehta conducting. Once in a lifetime. Phil Smith coached us. He is the one who told me about Wynton Marsalis. It was Phil Smith, John Ware, Vince Penzarella and Carmine Fornarato in the Trumpet section.
I was here at this landmark concert, celebrating the ultimate retirement of Adolph Herseth as principal trumpet of the Chicago Symphony, and I believe this concert happened in 2001. I say "ultimate" because once Bud passed year 50 as principal trumpet in 1997, there were many tribute concerts in his honor at Orchestra Hall besides this one. One thing I'll always remember, besides Jay Friedman's impressive arrangement of the Alpine Symphony, was the bright green sport coat Bud wore for the occasion, looking as if he'd just won the Masters!
I was a total amateur playing euphonium in John Paynter's North Shore Concert Band of Wilmette when I was asked to be in an impromptu brass group for an Easter service on Chicago's West side in the mid-70's. As we gathered , who should walk in as the first trumpet but Herseth himself! I was in awe, and yes, it's true- he tuned himself to be just a minute bit sharp, which a couple of students had told me he used to do to better carry his sound over the Orchestra. it''s been 50 years, and I still remember that gig!
To those who criticize the personnel listing- in the credits at the end it indicates current members (including Bud who didn't play), alumni and friends.
Interesting how this starts out with the opening fanfare from "Also sprach Zarathustra", then segues into "Eine Alpensinfonie", then to "Symphonia Domestica". I agree with the earlier individual who said that we didn't need the applause included in this video.
From right to left, Alice clevenger, dale clevenger, James smelser, Otto carillo, Daniel Gingrich, Dave griffin, Gail Williams and finally Norman schweikert
I believe it was his first job after graduating Juillard. Don't recall how many years he was there before auditioning and winning the NY job? I also don't know what chair he sat in CSO but recall when the CSO was visiting NY and playing Carnegie the brass section played a similar concert in Lincoln Center and many went to hear and see Herseth but were disappointed he wasn't there and Smith played 1st mostly. Late 1970's early 80's?
Definitely was not retired. As I just commented above, the CSO brass did a concert at Lincoln Center in NY and Herseth wasn't there either. I saw Herseth still playing principal in Mahler 5 in NY in ??? can't recall, maybe 2000.
There is no better low brass in any orchestra at any time since 1962. They were - and still are - astounding players.

Bravo that is the closest thing to a fundamental brass sound that I have heard in a long time. Thank you

In the description: "trombones: Leo Alessi" woah it's Joe's long lost twin!
I'll never forget hearing zarathustra for the first time. Amazing. Saw solti conduct Mahler's 10th
The solemnity and wonderfulness of this performance by exquisite orchestra are far superior splendor

Thanks so much for posting this! I was in the front row at this performance....unreal.
Esplêndido, bravo, magnífica enfimm sem palavras.
Philip Smith is in a couple other CSOB vids too, and this music is heaven if you are a Brass player.
Phil Smith played in Chicago symphony as 4th trumpet when he was 20 years old.
Meus olhos se enchem de lágrimas. É impossível não se emocionar.
Also Sprach/Alpine Symphony/Symphony Domestica
OK, let's study how many breaths Charlie had to take on the contra - I totally sympathize as a contra player myself - whew - a lot of work!
This is sooooo good!
With all due respect to every one of this great musicians, you can't name it Chicago Symphony Brass!!!!
They named it the CSO brass at the concert. I still have my program. It's the whole CSO brass section plus friends that flew in to play.
Why not? That's what it is.
As I understand it, all performers were either current or former members of the CSO, or students of the current members.
Open the spit valves, HAL.
Lol "Leo Alessi"

legends!
After the end of the Also Sprach we have a bit of diatonic harmony reminiscent of Copland among others.
That's because the director is a beat ahead of them. That is how he directs and the section follow.
Shiver music!
Philip Smith!!!
Kudos to Richard, kudos to this fine all-star brass ensemble
Old mature men making love to their craft. Magnificent!
The BEST !!!
In awe.
Wasemen! Chicago Brass my Heros!
To those who criticize the personnel listing- in the credits at the end it indicates current members (including Bud who didn't play), alumni and friends.
No strings required.
LOL
Charlie Geyer, stage right, on C trumpet and flugelhorn
Is this from the Herseth Tribute Concert in 2003 or thereabouts? If so, I was there!
and then alpine symphony
I assume this is from a larger concert? Where could i find that concert?
Interesting how this starts out with the opening fanfare from "Also sprach Zarathustra", then segues into "Eine Alpensinfonie", then to "Symphonia Domestica". I agree with the earlier individual who said that we didn't need the applause included in this video.
Wade Rice Jr the played another masterpiece before “Also sprach Zarathustra” . Because of that they were receiving that applause.
Anyone else have this for school work
I think It was the first time the film director did this job.
Euphonium was a nice touch though
Im pretty sure this was the brass buddies concert with the CSO and new York phill.
Shame the description doesn't mention the horn players - just the trumpets, trombones and tuba.
From right to left, Alice clevenger, dale clevenger, James smelser, Otto carillo, Daniel Gingrich, Dave griffin, Gail Williams and finally Norman schweikert
@@maxwellstein9953 Thank you!

Why Philip smith is in Chicago brass?
Not all of the people in this video are members of cso
True Phil Smith Principal trumpet and Joe Alseei Principal Trombone of the NY Philharmaonic.
I believe it was his first job after graduating Juillard. Don't recall how many years he was there before auditioning and winning the NY job? Late 1970's early 80's?
bigpardner 1975-1978
Phil Smith sat in the 4th chair, in the CSO. I recall his watching Bud a lot, at least when the CSO played Carnegie Hall.
Does anyone have links to other orchestras playing this song?
BLISS !!
No Gene no deal.
Jay Friedman is the man. Anyone know when abouts this was recorded?
jay friedman is a god among men, and around 2010 i think
Raymond Fallon jay friedman is one of the worst principal trombones i’ve ever heard
2001 or 2002.
@bamb0049 ? He's one of the best I think you meant to say.
2:40 is when the music starts.
Pipe organ would have been a nice touch at the beginning fanfare but oh well
We got a bow from David Schrader lol
Charlie Geyer!!!!!
Seriously - the video should have started with the music. We know they are great, that is why we are here. We don't need to hear the applause.
Just skip forward in the video
Were can I find the arrangement?
Lotta players that were probably picked for the gig. Now, I don't have a problem with that, because
Wait why is Phil playing with them? Just for extra badassery? or is this NY...
He's an alum...
Invited to do so having played in the CSO section.
Is that Phil Smith? I thought he was still in NY Phil.
oh, I see the replies below.....
I was hoping he would work in the brass parts from the Festival Prelude, but not to be.
This is what the symphony should be. Just brass and percussion
❤️
Isn't that Philip Smith from New York?
He was 4th trumpet with the chicago symphony orchestra before leaving to join the new york phil

Definitely was not retired. As I just commented above, the CSO brass did a concert at Lincoln Center in NY and Herseth wasn't there either. I saw Herseth still playing principal in Mahler 5 in NY in ??? can't recall, maybe 2000.
I believe he last played with CSO in 2004. I attended somewhat often the last couple years. Lots of boo-boos but still had that sound.
