I have several syngoniums (different varieties). At one point they were pots outside when I lived in Florida. When we moved to KC, Kansas I was limited on plants I could bring. I had to bring them in the house here in KC. They are very forgiving and easy. I have been moving them over to pon and they love it. Moss poles require too much maintenance and are very messy FOR ME, I have 100+ plants and work 2 jobs, as an rn and at a plant nursery. Jan I love your collection, content, and your furry co-host🐈😘.

The way you feel about aroid mix in a pole is how I feel about tree fern fibre.
Sphagnum moss is so much easier, though not ideal in every situation. 😊

Love the progress report on this plant. I love mine, and I i have a chiapense as well, I'm looking forward to spring and then growing a smidge faster.
If you put a thin layer of moss on top your tree fern fibre, aroid mix it will stop it from falling out of the pole - although difficult to do with this repot I realise.

Because that is a macrophyllum, it will grow with a much tighter (lusher) look naturally, compared to a podophyllum, which have longer petioles and longer internodal spacing. But podophyllum also tends to activate nodes even when the terminal node is intact, so you end up with multiple stems. The roots on Syngonium are much sturdier, more like a Monstera, than say a Philodendron, making them more drought tolerant. In Florida, they will attach to the stucco siding on a house and head down toward the ground. (and trying to get Syngo roots off the stucco is a chore, speaking from experience)

Ahh, looking up what the really large leaves look like on this variety really helped with understanding your perspective lol. Kindy slouchy & basic when they get too big 🤷🏿‍♀️ You've also made us moss-allegiant, I fear 😂 But I also live in very high humidity with the easier care you mentioned, so I may just be speaking for myself. Fun experiment 🥂

When I saw the plant for the first time, I thought it was badly affected by thrips because of the leaves pattern. :) I have two of them now, growing in average home conditions, not in the cabinet or so. One in soil medium, the other in semi-hydroponics. Very slow growing, but I do not mind. They are both doing fine, mealybugs appeared a couple of times. Thank you very much for sharing your experiences.

Hi Jan! I had 3 syngoniums growing on poles and then some sort of gigantic Florida mealy bugs got on them. 😪 I ended up dismantling 3 poles and throwing one away completely because the mealies got INSIDE the poles!. Most of my syngoniums are inexpensive, so not much invested except time, but still heartbreaking. Will have to see if the mealies are a one-off or if they are common. I just moved here a year ago and for the first whole year I never saw a mealy bug like this. These suckers are humongous.

that? a thousand buck??? I'm sorry, no matter how rare the "heart shape" is, syngonium is not a hard-to-grow family as I know... plus the leaves are not the WOW level stunning as many other plants... I might as well spend on quality grow lights... great that you didn't pay the crazy $ to get it.
