I found 11 corms in my polly. One died - 10 are now beautiful little pollies. I have them in fluval stratum, ready to pot up so your video came just in time. Love your videos, missed Bradley today😊

People have the tendency to overcomplicate things & turn it into a stressful hobby by pretending they are performing open brain surgery when they repot a plant ... I want this to be fun & enjoyable... so glad that attitude translates on camera :)

Your expression when you turned the pot over and they plants fell out 🤣🤣🤣 On a side note, moist corms are really easy to peel with a textured DRY paper towel. No need to scrape, the skins just rub off in big chunks. :)
I haven't tried propagating my Alocasias yet. I've only had them for just under 12 months but they are my favourite type of plant. I have 14 now. I'm just trying to keep them happy atm. A trick that I've found which is working for me is after watering I top water including their leaves on my sink. After sitting for a while I put them back in their container. My pots all have river rocks in the base of their container so after watering they drip onto the rocks then they use it like their own personal humidifier. Since doing this no more problems with overwatering and new leaves are constantly growing. I have also luckily never had pests on any of them. I think it's because I always wash their leaves when watering. Bottom watering just doesn't work for me. I did this with my plants a few months ago. Not my Alocasias but with my others. My prayer plants hated it. I have 24 different varieties. 5 of them got fungul issues almost straight away. So back to top watering. I just find my plants are happier this way. Bottom watering doesn't work for me.

I absolutely love that you speak to us like we’re there 😅❤ Also, I propagate my comms either moss too or stratum but that’s more expensive 😂. I have used pon to propagate them as well as all of my plants are slowly going to semi hydro❤ I love the Regal Sheilds ❤. I have a baby one which the leaves are a little bigger than the ones in this video but I bought a bigger one the other day from Bunnings as well which I will put them together into Leca 😊.

I just bought a regal shield alocasia that was suffering from the coming winter in a temperate climate. It was heavily discounted because of it's appearance. I'm going to force dormancy for the winter as I don't have a lot of space for it right now. I was able to collect almost a dozen corms that I'll propagate in the meantime.
Thats cool. The regal shield that had no attention, just in the mix set aside did great. It's like finding the best veggies growing in the compost heap 😂😂😂🎉🎉🎉❤

You’ve got me hooked now! I have one little Thai Con and hopefully a Crème Brulle tomorrow! (If that’s even a ‘thing’). I’ve got potting mix ingredients literally EVERYWHERE and can’t wait to start making my first moss poles!!! ….I’m even selling furniture to make room for my plants!!! 😃
I tried this method and the contents of my little propogation box totally rotted within a day 😳 Am I totally dense and it needed to be vented? I just used moist perlite and the corms.

Very cool video, Jan. I just repotted our 'Regal Shield' and the forms were everywhere. While I knew they propagated that way, I learned something new today. I will try the peel method next time, what a great discovery.
I have little experience with moss poles and figure YOU are my best source of useful information. How do you manage the pole training process when the plant is too small for a heavy or large enough pot?
Jan I've been cooking up some pudding of my own and it's pretty sweet. I think I had less than a 50% success rate of growing them in a pot, so I just threw the rest into a plastic container and forgot about them until now 😅 they're loving the humidity
I love fluval for corms. I also like to soak them for a bit to remove the skin. It will come off so easy. Fluval can be found at the aquarium stores or Amazon here in the states. Not sure about Australia. Happy growing from Florida!
Hello Jan, how do you know which side of the corm to put up? The pointy bit or the round bit (if they have any…)? I noticed that I put some upside down, they grew eventually but much slower so I want to avoid that next time 😅
I put the pointy bit up :) You can usually tell by the way the corm was attached to the original plant. The pointy but makes it's way to the surface to sprout :)
I'm currently doing this in preparation for new fencing going up in the front of our property. I have some Sarian and regal shields I'm carefully multiplying. I hope some of my corms throw some verigated variants at me! My Sarian throws corms like crazy
I recently purchased a slightly variegated Odora from a sad plant sale... and they sent me the wrong one with almost no variegation. But there's a little plantlet already growing in the same pot and it is so beautifully marbled🥺 I'm looking to extract it and really hope it survives^^
This is my first year propogating corms (I just repotted my alocasias so have about 20 corms in total). How damp do you normally keep the moss? I want to create enough humidity (I'm in the UK and we have terrible weather right now), but don't want to risk the corms rotting. As we don't have much heat at the moment I'm putting the containers near the bathroom radiator at night - where there is a little bit of warmth but not too much - and during the day they're on a south facing window sill to get as much natural light as possible. A few of them are starting to show signs of life, although it's only been 3 weeks so far.

Yeah I just have a big bucket of soil that I use to repot any of my big plants outdoors that require a lot of medium :) and it just sprouted out of that bucket :) Never seen fluval available in OZ. But seen many from North America use it!
I never use moss for propagation because when I buy a plant from someone it's usually a cutting in moss and I HATE removing moss... It makes me literally angry because it's such a waste of my time 😅 I use perlite, water or fluval and all 3 are so easy going!!! My favourite is perlite tho because I dont have to rinse anything! I took it of and put in in the pot!
Just straight up perlite? Nothing else? And then water daily or how do you keep it moist? I imagine they need quite a bit of moisture in the beginning especially?

From your experience would you say those plants from bigger corms grow better than those from smaller corms? It is what I think from my experience. All my current alocasia are from corms. I got my silver dragon as a really big corm about half a year ago and it already has about 7 leaves and is increasing in leaf size where as my dragon scale and black velvet came from much much smaller corms and they only got their 2nd leaf a while ago. Also the fully white one looks amazing. Hope it survives somehow.
Hello. Does someone know why my alocasia doesn't make any corms. I have her for 3 years, she is quite big makes big leaves, but never have I seen corms when repotting her.?
My corms are in sphagnum moss that i keep moist, in a clear container with a lid. After about 3 months, still nothing..they are all still firm and look healthy, but there's just nothing happening..what can i do?
I'm wondering if a wholely white stem still connected through roots to a wholely green stem could be kept alive and fed through the roots. We tend of think of plants sending out corms and basal shoots as propagating themselves, but it's all one plant until we rip them up, so I wonder if it will continue to allocate resources to a completely white stem or if the plant would "realise" that it's pointless. 🧐 I will never do this experiment because I have pretty much zero interest in variegated plants - I find them scientifically kind of interesting but aesthetically ugly - but I just imagined someone with what looks like a wholely white plant fed by green parts that are hidden behind a curtain ... in the next room ... fed with a grow light.
I see your tub of soil off to the side.. do you ever have the problem of your cat using it?? Mine used mine awhile back and I had to throw the whole thing out 😢

Agree, bottom watering never works for me too :) and yes, keeping the leaves clean is the best pest prevention :)

Yeah mine had so many!! After I took out a few I had to give up & just kept the rest in the pot :D Hope this method works for you:)
@@sydneyplantguy I'd like to give it a try. Our regal shield had corms growing out of the drainage holes of the pot, it was so root bound.
They are beautiful ,sadly mine are never too happy..

I have had great success with fluval, no messy roots, a heat mat and light, they are so quick

Good things with Alocasias is that the variegation seems to be super random, so could come back anytime :)

I've found fluval is the best. When you repot, do you save the soil or why did you have that soil 2 months later still?

For sure, the bigger the corm the bigger the propagation :)

What makes a corm grow? They're already buried aren't they?
Usually separating them from the mother plant gives them a push to sprout, but they can also sprout while still being attached to the mother plant :)
