- This beautiful Christian hymn, sung in four-part harmony, is a prayer for God to remain present with the speaker throughout life, through trials, and through death.
The opening line alludes to Luke 24:29, "Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent", and the last verse sung draws on text from 1 Corinthians 15:55, "O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?"
The hymn was composed by Scottish Anglican Henry Francis Lyte, and is normally sung to the tune "Eventide" by William Henry Monk.
Lyrics:
Abide with me; fast falls the eventide;
The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide.
When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, O abide with me.
I need Your presence every passing hour.
What but Your grace can foil the tempter's power?
Who, like Yourself, my guide and strength can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me.
I fear no foe, with You at hand to bless;
Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness.
Where is death's sting? Where, grave, your victory?
I triumph still, if You abide with me.

‘The dark night of the soul’ brings us to the end of ourselves and to the beginning of God. This hymn reminds me of not just my own experiences of being upheld in times of trouble and despair but also seeing the sustaining power of Christ in the life of my mother during dark hours. Christ described himself as the vine and we are the branches and that if we abide in Him we can bear much fruit. This hymn helps bring my heart closer to Christ and reminds me to abide in the divine vine that comforts, nourishes, strengthens, and gives real hope.

This Gospel reading inspired the Sunday 7pm choir to create our latest video, 'Abide With Me', a traditional Christian hymn that is a prayer for God to remain present with the speaker throughout life, through trials, and through death.

26/10/2024 at about 3:15 am in my sleep I heard this song. I don't completely know all of it but when I woke up just the first line was still in my thoughts. Usually this kind of thing happens when Our Father wakes me with a song, and it's usually used to comfort or instruct me. As I was doing my devotions, He said, Listen the song, I did, with every word that is within each line I realize gor what I'm now going thru, He's making me aware that He truly does abide with His children. We are NEVER alone. His reminder to someone today, feeling lost and empty and drained. He's always there.

Truthfully.. I started playing church organ recently . Never been a religious person nor an atheist but I went in with a kind of “Im going to play music and not get too involved” .. I’ve been requested to play this at a funeral this week and I am so in love with this song. The heating powers and sadness it creates within me is something I’ve never felt before 💜

The ex-hymn of the Beating retreat of the Indian Rebulic Day festivities. Albeit now replaced with a different tune, this hymn shall live in me until my demise, as it has thus far, since I first listened to it on National Television 17 years ago. I've been singing this song since the 4th grade when my class sang it for a funeral and I mot familiar with the 2nd and 3rd verse used here. The lyrics I grew up with were totally different. The first verse was the same and it's nice they used the traditional arrangement but the harmonies were not very good at all. Maybe it was the mic placement but I didn't hear any harmony. The men sounded more like they were singing background, not harmony.

mom was buried yesterday her twin 3 weeks back was cremated and her oldest brother is buried tommorow i predicted one twin to die when they both seperately went into hospital same day mom was predicted terminal he was sent home he died first then big ronnie went this was moms hymn she picked she lived and we lived hard she had a dark life then she met my dad and he gave her the dream and they built it together dad is now in hospital you getting what im saying people gnosis all of us

As a Christian, I find that a crucifix depicted as an accompaniment to the hymn offensive. As to the best of my knowledge, crucifixes are used or displayed only in the apostate Roman churches. & as such, this video has no place alongside this fine Protestant hymn.

It shouldn't be offensive, but it is theologically incorrect, after all, Jesus isn't still on the cross today. And it's not even an accurately graven image of Him, though we're commanded not to make any graven images of God. If you're indignant about this, then settle the matter in prayer for those who still put any vain hope in crucifixes instead of finding it in the empty cross.
