I first heard this hymn at Wembley at the cup final in 1971 as a 10 yr old with my father,I'm 60 next year and I've never ever forgotten not only what a wonderful hymn it is but how powerful it is as well,the story behind it is so sad,my grandparents both had this played at their funerals,and I will have it at mine,even today when I listen to it,it brings back happy but also sad memories and I get help but have a tear in my eyes.

The 1st time I heard this music I was 11 years old, it was plying in a small church in Claremont, this was at my best friends funaral he was only 9 years old. he was run over by a milk lorry right in fron of me. I will never forget this till my dying day, I'm now 70 years old.

It was an honour to have sang this beautiful hymn in a girls high school choir at a World War memorial dawn service 45 years ago (my first year in HS).. Still brings back vivid memories when I hear this song. Thinking of all those who lost their lives during the war, the choir mistress (Sr Clare McInerney ) as well as the song's composer. May their souls rest in God's loving peace forever.

This is the most beautiful and powerful version of this hymn I have ever heard! "What but thy Grace can foil the tempters' power" What a powerful statement for those who need his Grace for whatever storms they are facing. I read the poem long ago, not knowing so many poems are turned into song. This is my favorite!!!!!!!!!

Having read hundreds of comments on this great hymn, I cannot resist the urge to write again. I have been listening to this hymn since many years ago. As many commented when hearing this hymn, I get a feeling that I am saved and the invisible Lord is near me. Lord, abide with me in life and death.
Hi Joseph. I read your comment and just want to say, I hope that you are saved. But, in your heart, there should be no question if you are saved. The Bible says we are promised eternal life, but we must be born again to enter the kingdom of heaven. We must confess with our mouth our sins to God. Confess that you are a sinner and ask Him to forgive your sins. Tell Him that you believe that He sent His only begotten Son, Jesus to die on the cross as the perfect sacrifice for our sins and that He raised Him from the dead. Then put your trust in Jesus. Then, you have peace and know that you are saved from hell.

wnen i was a child , this is the song that was always sang by my old grandparents before sleeping..now that I am a grandparent too..i always lead to sing this song with my grand children before sleeping too to assure the presence of the Lord with us while we sleep helplessly against any intruder at the middle of the night..this song gives comfort as we sleep tight through the uncertain dark 🌙
