@deek60819 Disney actually didn't, though. It's only on Disney+, which isn't the best. Only Guardians 3, if I remember, but it only seems Nolan gets the special treatment
Not necessarily. They can make money with Imax tours for years until the attendance drops out. Then they'll milk the money on a home release. Interstellar is a good example. In Dune's case, they have 2 films to tour with.
It's arguably the worst 15/70mm IMAX screening I have ever attended (of the ones that projected correctly). It was clearly not IMAX, since it wasn't shot on 65mm IMAX, and the sensor size on the Arri 65 doesn't offer anything remotely comparable to IMAX. Plus the framing was clearly not intended for IMAX in most scenes. Go to one of BFI's many Interstellar screenings for an actual IMAX experience.
A perfect 4K UHD home video edition would have both the 1:90 ratio (which would not necessitate any black bars on the sides) and all the extras the films deserve. If you know about the BLADE RUNNER, LORD OF THE RINGS or GAME OF THRONES home video editions, you know what films as extraordinary as these really deserve.
That would be ideal. On demand digitally could even offer the full 1.43:1 version similar to what happened with Zack Snyder's Justice League. Options like these would be appreciated.

Hey love ur vids, I saw this film 4 times in 1.43:1 / work in film and i have a few things to note about aspect ratio cuz theres a few misconceptions about the way imax was used for part 2. In the full 15/70mm 1.43:1 IMAX presentation of the film, every shot NOT presented in 1.43:1 is in 1.90:1; which is the open gate aspect ratio of the arri alexa 65’s sensor. In the example you give in 1:37 of the video, u nailed the actual answer: they overlayed these aspect ratios most likely for creative ideas. However, in the final film, that scene with feyd rautha is in shown 1.90:1 and wasn’t cropped down to 1.43:1 within the open gate frame. This convention is shown throughout bts footage but truly the ONLY time there were scenes in TRUE 1.43:1 were the same ones u show bts of where the only frame lines are for 2.35:1 for the main theatrical cut i.e like the examples shown in ur video from 1:22-1:29. This stuff is confusing but just wanted to put it out there lol. Love the video and idk how the hell u get some this footage sometimes its incredible! Hey there thanks I appreciate the kind words. Thank you for the input, that's the problem with not having the IMAX version to check over, you don't know or remember how each shot was actually presented haha! So I appreciate the info on that! You're also right in that in the cinema everything else was 1.90:1 framing, I probably should have mentioned that but I was focusing more from the point of view of home video VS IMAX you could say. For the sake of film preservation is really one of the main reasons why I do these things. Thanks for watching!
@ 100% man! And no sweat i just wanted throw my two cents out there. The full open gate version must be released, the framing is entirely different in most shots and completely changes the visual language of the scene; which u showed a lot of great examples of that in ur first video on Dune Part 1 in Imax. Again, dope video and a great point of advocacy for IMAX at home! In my eyes, i believe that just like how we have dvd, bluray, and 4k versions of physical media, there should be an IMAX 4K disc option. Lets say they make it criterion style and have it be $30-$40 and have it be like in the old dvd menu options: full or widescreen! I.E. in the case of dune 2, do u want to watch the version that is 1.90:1 throughout only or a version that would cut to 4:3 pillar box for the full 1.43:1 ratio shots! Perhaps even a third option where its made for projectors so that it can fill the aspect ratio for a 4:3 projection. Think of it like if u had a CRT TV and 1.43:1 was ur entire tv screen area and it’d just letterbox down for scenes in 1.90:1. The options are endless but theres simply no excuses from studios anymore, bring em home!
I see now the real issue is that the IMAX version at 1:40 would lose side coverage, meaning there could be no versions with full coverage. Goddamn it Denis! You split the coverage over 2 versions of the film? That is a truly sinister Harkonnen move. Perhaps we should just relish in the mystique that this gives the movie. However you watch it, you're never getting the full picture. Still, the only reason I don't own the movie is because I can't get it in IMAX.
It was a lot more straightforward with the IMAX shots for Dune Part One. There was only cropping from top and bottom, the rest was shot in standard format as intended. Dune Part Two, things get complicated indeed, offering three options of the same shot. Which one they pick for an "IMAX edition" is a mystery as you say.
So glad this video covers the nuances of how Dune was framed for specific aspect ratios. Getting the IMAX version doesn't necessarily mean we would get the whole picture, and I think a lot of people misunderstand that for this film in particular.
I understand wanting to keep the 1.43 or "fullscreen" experience exclusive to theaters, from a monetary and business perspective, but it would make a lot more sense if there were more 1.43 screens in the world. I also don't think Denis is anywhere near as hands-on with the physical release as someone like Nolan is unfortunately.
I saw it in 1.90:1 IMAX multiple times, and it was MAGNIFICENT! Still I didn't get to see the biggest experience. There is something about 1.43:1 ratio, especially for Dune movies. It gives the space to all these landscapes. I think Denis is a master in establishing scale of the places we visit with him and this ratio just expands on that tremendously. The problem with these versions of the movies being held back from ppl outside of the cinemas was a realy pain to me since the 1st Dune. I remember Denis said in one interview that they should release them, but nothing happend. I have no idea what could we do to make it happen :( Or at least get a statement of their plans about it. A big petition, or a freaking attack for WB/Legendary's comment sections everywhere XD. I really have no idea, seeing how much time it has been...
He said he thought it was already released for Part One. What that tells me is that he isn't really concerned or cares much about the film beyond the theatrical releases which is quite bizarre to me.
I would pay an ungodly amount of money for an IMAX certified, 1.33:1 format, large screen OLED TV and 4K Blu-Rays made for it. I’m talking about multiple months’ salaries. There is no IMAX in my country, which is an island, making international travel expensive, and where I’m moving has a digital IMAX which I think is 1.9:1.
They got me on Dune pt one buying the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. Sounds great, but it wasn't what I saw in theaters on an IMAX screen...3 times! They haven't gotten me for part Two, because I know to look for the IMAX version B4 buying. Maybe they're waiting to have the Trilogy complete before issuing an IMAX set released. WARNER BROTHERS WAKE UP! If so, that's when they can have my hard earned cash, not before...
The thing is, Denis is adamant that this is not a trilogy and shouldn't be called one. With that in mind, they should release the IMAX versions in a special edition before Dune Messiah! - They can make whatever three part box set they want after this, I'm talking to you WB!
Ok, so I don't get it. When you make comparisons at 1:37, the one you say is IMAX is actually… more cropped (worse), and the standard version shows more of the whole image? If that's the case, what's the upside of IMAX?
In that type of shot, there isn't any significant loss in terms of the IMAX frame, because they framed it seemingly, for a more widescreen shot, however the following scene which I show next at 1:59 and 7:07 there could potentially be a loss which would be filled in with a 1.90:1 aspect ratio. It all depends on how they'd present it which is hard to see because they've seemingly taken a different approach to Dune Part Two. Dune Part One was much more simple in its framing of the IMAX shots. It was standard and 1.43:1 by the looks of it, two formats in mind. Part Two has three different formats in mind which complicates things.
More than anything it’s a way to fill the whole screen. Even if there isn’t really that much of an expanded image, when a 1:43 imax is fully filled, it’s stupid immersive.
Thanks for the video! I never saw Dune in IMAX, but saw part two twice in 1:90. The standard screen ratio loses so much, in particular in the scene with Gurney/the spice harvester and the Harkonnen arena fight. I'd still say that part 1 is better because it is more atmospheric and feels less rushed even though the Yueh betrayal plot was very convoluted. Have you found out some of the deleted part 2 scenes for a video?
That's the hope. It's possible if they release a special edition or something, but that won't likely happen until after Dune Messiah at the rate they're going. It might never happen if IMAX wants to retain exclusivity.
I never was a Dune universe fan, never read any of the books. My only encounter was a computer realtime strategy game called Dune 2 in 1991 or so. I happened to see the movie part 1 on a tiny screen during a longhaul flight and immediately thought oh my god this must be seen in IMAX. So I went to see part 2 in IMAX, and indeed that is the way these movies should be seen. The glory of the experience is hard to describe. Now that I think of it, since I do not go to move theatres too often, my last 3 visits all happened to be IMAX - Top Gun Maverick, Oppenheimer and Dune part 2.
Blade Runner 2049, Dune Part One, and Dune Part Two have been vandalized on home media. It's unacceptable that Denis just allows half of his movies that people spent so much time and effort into crafting to be tossed in the trash, never to be seen again, and just watch half the image that was shot for the rest of eternity. How is this allowed to happen?
It's a valid point, ultimately I don't know who is responsible or who should be fighting more for "home video rights" haha but Denis seems to have a perfectly happy relationship with WB despite all this, so who knows really.
Warner Bros. recently released Joker Folie a Deux with 2.2:1 and 1.9:1 Ratios, which isn't a huge difference, so I don't understand why they wouldn't for this which uses 2.4:1 and 1.43:1, a much more dramatic difference.
I have seen _Dune: Part Two_ three times. The first was in a "Limax" theater an hour from my house, the second was in a standard multiplex, the third was on my TV. The "Limax" version is the best version I have seen so far. I have never seen the whole frame in any version of this movie that I've watched. While this hasn't dampened my love of the film itself, it nevertheless pains me that I never saw it at its best! I want so badly to see this film as it was meant to be seen!
Oh definitely! I can Imagnine they would wait for Dune Messiah and release an Ultimate Collector's Edition, with the IMAX aspect ratio and maybe some art. Kinda like they did with Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy.
They’ve been super tight with the imax footage for part two, especially during Oscar award potential with their “for your consideration” run. Normally they really like to show off the film in the fullest way. I do hope they release a special edition but I hope it doesn’t take too long.
Criminal of WB’s not to release these aspects. Even Denis was under the impression the first film had been released on 4K Blu-ray with the IMAX ratios. Frickin’ WB’s!
Sad, was really hoping for an imax home release, even treating the films like they do some of the Marvel movies with enhanced imax for the massive effects shots. I guess we can still hope they will do a home imax release when all three movies are available! 🤞🏼
Smart money says an IMAX aspect ratio version of both films (w/ the 40% in the case of Part One and 100% in Part Two's case and hopefully, deleted / extended scenes) is in the cards, but is only a matter of when it comes out. That time, I would think, to build up the hype, would be a couple of months before the release of "Dune: Part Three". Collectors like me, definitely would pick up a copy.
This breaks my heart. I get that Denis doesn’t think that IMAX is appropriate for TVs but what about those of us with projectors (or monster TVs!). We can replicate the experience of imax at home.
Cropping the aspect ratio of any movie for home release should be illegal. The frames were composed on IMAX and when you crop it to scope you get much less information on screen, you're not experiencing the movie the intended way.
Wow! Great work. But I guess you can't really call it work if you love it. And we all know you love it as much as we do. Great job! Now, if you excuse me, I'm going to go and watch Dune... again!
We need a petition to have both _Dune_ movies re-released on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the uncropped 1.43:1 IMAX aspect ratio! Let's go full on Snyder Cut with this!
Saw it in the 1.9:1 imax, and personally (from what I've seen here and elsewhere) i think thats the best version. It gives you more height to the image without losing visual information on the sides, I feel like the 1.43:1 version often sacrificed too much from the sides. However, personally, I'm really sick of the different versions being released. For me, the framing for multiple versions feels like it takes away some of the intention from the frames themselves. Since they have to shoot to include all essential information in the most cropped version, the expanded versions to me feel like they just have more negative space, as opposed to using the frame size in its entirety. I'm completely down with movies changing aspect ratios, but i want it to be built in to all versions of the movie (like everything everywhere all at once, the grand budapest, etc), not just a stunt to get people to pay more money, which to me is often how it feels
I don’t think people understand that if you have an IMAX formatted film on bluray you’ll have black bars on the sides for IMAX shots and for widescreen shots both on sides and top/bottom. It wouldn’t look good. They’d need to make a tv with the proper aspect ratio for it to fit properly
If they're not going to release the 1.43:1 version for home viewing, then after the 3rd movie comes out, they should re-release each movie, consecutively, for 1 week at a time in every IMAX theater each year.
Most of the frames and footage featured in this video were not final in treatment or color correction, so each element had to be color corrected to match with the theatrical cut's final color grading. Some footage couldn't even be used due to radical changes of the footage, a brief example can be seen here: 4:46 (no shield effect in the 1.90:1 aspect ratio footage).
@@Dr.Dingus07 Absolutely agree. That would be $40 well spent in my view haha.
where did you get those uncropped shots?
I assume (and hope) they are just waiting for the messiah movie so that they can sell us a full trilogy box set with imax ratio. Fingers crossed.
Saw them both in IMAX and now only want an IMAX copy
They way this video is edited is fantastic. You yourself are a skilled filmmaker. Thank you for this!
@@shaynedmp2001 that’s very kind of you thank you. Really glad you enjoyed it!
I need this extra visual info. Some of the shots become so much more personal and immersive.
So glad this video covers the nuances of how Dune was framed for specific aspect ratios. Getting the IMAX version doesn't necessarily mean we would get the whole picture, and I think a lot of people misunderstand that for this film in particular.
Yeah, there's potentially three versions of Dune Part Two out there. In a sense, all three will lose something or have something the other doesn't.
And I find that troubling and kind of problematic. It's like sending your child to school and not caring about how they perform or behave at school.
loved this. long live the fighters (and the resistance)
Glad you enjoyed
I've already bought the 4K blu-ray editions but would DEFINITELY shell out more for their Imax cuts!
There is no IMAX in my country, which is an island, making international travel expensive, and where I’m moving has a digital IMAX which I think is 1.9:1.
thank you for this youtube
I'm so glad I first saw it in IMAX
In my opinion 1.90:1 is the perfect middle ground. That could have been the home video release format.
Any chance we can get an Open Matte version like Blade Runner 2049?
That's the hope. It's possible if they release a special edition or something, but that won't likely happen until after Dune Messiah at the rate they're going. It might never happen if IMAX wants to retain exclusivity.
I would buy this movie again if it's released in IMAX format. I purchased part one in standard and 3d so I can experience it in every way I can.
I need this imax version
And sadly many share the same type of story as you which to me, simply isn't fair.
Thank you for doing this research.
My pleasure. Thank you for watching!
Watched Both parts each 3 times in IMAX...Out of the world experience.
Thank you so much for this video. It was very interesting.
I Have a question. Where did you get those imax shots?
Trailers, VFX showreels and articles. I stitched all the individual elements together.
@secretsofdune thanks 👍
Oh definitely!
I can Imagnine they would wait for Dune Messiah and release an Ultimate Collector's Edition, with the IMAX aspect ratio and maybe some art. Kinda like they did with Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy.
Lets hope they are saving those IMAX releases for both movies and waiting for some special collection release
They’ve been super tight with the imax footage for part two, especially during Oscar award potential with their “for your consideration” run. Normally they really like to show off the film in the fullest way. I do hope they release a special edition but I hope it doesn’t take too long.
THANK YOU!
a dune and dune 2 imax 4k bluray would be an instabuy for me
Criminal of WB’s not to release these aspects.
PLEAAAAASE GIVE US AN IMAX RELEASE 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Good work!!!
Thanks I appreciate it. I wish there was more to show, but only time will tell I guess.
I cannot believe that I was able to see Dune PT. 2 in IMAX. Probably the best cinematic experience I've ever had (except Oppenheimer)
I would gladly play for an IMAX ratio release...
I need the Dune movies and all of Christopher Nolans movies in 1.43:1 aspect ratio on Blu-Ray.
Saw Dune 2 in 70mm IMAX. I can't remember the last time I felt so emotionally moved by a movie. Maybe *The Dark Knight*.
Great job! Now, if you excuse me, I'm going to go and watch Dune... again!
I want the full IMAX 4:3 version on Apple Vision Pro. They already have an IMAX app and the scale is awesome. Need options to buy or rent the movies.
If they ever released 4K discs of Dune Parts One and Two with their IMAX aspect ratio preserved I would buy those UHDs in a heartbeat.
Dune 2 in imax 70mm was life changing, they better release an IMAX version on streaming.
So many of those 2.39:1 shots look like you're spying on the film from across the road through binoculars.
I think an epic of galactic scale feels most fitting in a scope format like the classic epics of the past.
We need a petition to have both _Dune_ movies re-released on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the uncropped 1.43:1 IMAX aspect ratio! Let's go full on Snyder Cut with this!
Warner Bros, Legendary, PLEASE, release an IMAX home video version
🙏🙏🙏🙏 for an IMAX edition
El wide screeeeeeen es super!!
A recortar todo!!
Own an I-Max version of both parts 1 and 2 of Denis Villeneuve's Dune? Yes please.
I love Greig Fraser but idk how you can be comfortable with this as a DP. Maybe he's not.
I don’t think people understand that if you have an IMAX formatted film on bluray you’ll have black bars on the sides for IMAX shots and for widescreen shots both on sides and top/bottom. It wouldn’t look good. They’d need to make a tv with the proper aspect ratio for it to fit properly
yes
I know I and likely others would rebuy both films on 4k Blu-ray if they release a special edition with the IMAX shots
If they're not going to release the 1.43:1 version for home viewing, then after the 3rd movie comes out, they should re-release each movie, consecutively, for 1 week at a time in every IMAX theater each year.
I would literally pay extra for the imax version idc
we didnt miss out on imax. we missed out on elementary story details
I'm not going to purchase any version until they give us it in IMAX, it's utterly pointless filing in IMAX if they wont release it.
BRING US THE IMAX AND I'LL BUY IT AGAIN
They need to do a IMAX Trilogy release when the Denis trilogx is done!
4:39 Me when I saw that there wouldn't be the IMAX version on the blu-ray
This is criminal
I was able to watch Dune 2 in imax and it was the best movie watching experience…
NGL, I’m mad at Villeneuve for not insisting on Dune IMAX home release, or at least addressing it for fans.
YES
And there is no 3D blu-ray version 😢
