I don't think a store like this would be allowed in New York - it would have to have throwaway containers like paper bags. If there is any food safety concern with a law to be passed, NY will be the first to pass it - the idea is great but the reusable jars are a food safety hazard - as for the food itself , as long as the customer doesn't have to touch it's OK, it's in dispensers - they do have the food bars in New York, where you grab your food with tongs or spoons - BUT right now during Covid food bars are not allowed in NY - all the product in food bars is now containerized and sold by portion
Who and how do the reusable "jars" get cleaned and sanitized? Do they use water to clean the jars and if so, how much water is used? Is there a "green approved" sanitation process that does not use bleach?? Are the jars heavier than plastics? Old people and 3rd world immigrants might not want to carry all that weight on public transit? What would happen if I took my glass jar of barley to the beach for a snack...would the lifeguards give me a citation for having glass on the beach? Will Todd Gloria be shopping here for the festive and colorful rainbow jars? This is a noble effort, and the woke communities will be proud of the virtue you have shown. Keep America Great all you Americans...of Green descent.
Why would you assume anyone is touching the food? You can make that same assumption about regular packaged food as well. He said you can being your own jar so certainly nobody has touched that.
Wonder if the business is backed by some non-profit, funded in part with government money, seeking to justify its own existence. The store operator appears nice and sincere, but doubt the business is viable. Risk of product contamination is high. Probably doesn't scale well. Too complicated. People need to weigh their container first before dispensing product. People may change their mind or mix products leading to waste and shortage. The only true zero-waste store is the one that doesn't exist. In short, this is greenwashing that's likely funded in part with taxpayer money.

Our big chain grocery stores have scales where consumers can weigh certain food products. Even with the scales, food is still wasted. The problem isn't the plastic, it's human behavior. Everything humanity extracts from nature will leave a footprint one way or another. I guarantee this lady will be out of business in less than 10 years.
Plastic is also a problem. It's polluting the seas. This store's aim is to reduce plastic waste. You completely missed the point. It was very clearly stated they wanted to eliminate single use plastic. And the video mentioned it several times I don't understand why you missed the point.
Wish nothing but great success for this young women!
This is awesome! I hope this spreads and becomes part of normal shopping.
This is so awesome. I like my beans, rice, and pasta in jars on my shelves.

Wow, I am glad this is open in North Park. Much closer than People's Co Op in Ocean Beach. Congratulations and success always be with you.
So glad to see them open
Awesome. Next time I am in SD I am def visiting this awesome store.
Wish we had something like this in our small No Ca town. Wishing The Mighty Bin much success!
This lady is a hero
Wow, incredible❤
If I hadn't moved to north county, this would he my go to. Love this.
Wow I want to shop here . Love This
Much like when I was a kid in Seattle in the 70s. We bought food in bulk at the pier in the sound.
40% of USA food supply is wasted, 30% of the world food supply is wasted every year. This is a great leap forward for many people 😉❤🤙👍
Right so sad I just believe wasting food is a SIN.
WOW!! that great to see!!!!!
Before the pasta and detergent goes into the bin isn’t it in a plastic bag or bin? Curious
I'll be checking it out !
isabelle you go girl

Bring your own jar and bags. I love it. Come to LA.
There's a zero waste store in LA called re_grocery that I used to go to. It's between Eagle Rock and Highland Park.

that's how the usa used to operate - find your niche and start your own business - good for her ..
This is stupid as people who might not wash their hands touch other people's food.....and so on the contamination continues.
