I will have to get some of your work I guess. I've been a pianist since I was 17, up till my Mom became sick and now I care full time for her. I guess Forty some years. I am self taught, pretty much and learned to read music, thanks to church pianists that were willing to let me ask questions. I could never get lessons. Now as an adult, I would LOVE to have lessons, and get told, "Aww, you don't need any lessons! You play very well!" Yes, I can play pretty well, play fairly well by ear and have learned to do some chord changes, but I have no idea about music theory, chord construction, or whatever that's needed. I haven't played much in the last three years, but I hear you play and long to be able to play like that! Thanks for taking time to make a video about key changes. I may have to watch again and takes notes and try to make time to practice again.

Thank you - this is probably the best explanation I've heard around key changes. I've been using these transitions for years but with average success. I feel like now I know exactly what to look for. I'll be using these in church for sure! A big thank you from Down Under.

Natalie, you are one of the best things that has happened during the last 4 months. I came across your Sunday hymns by accident, immediately subscribed and have listened to all your music since. I recently decided to watch some of your tutorials and although I only play by ear and don't know how to read music or understand most of the terms in this lesson, you make it so plain and demonstrate so I can see. Several people have tried to help me over the years but your videos are the best.
I appreciate all the different styles of piano you can play but most are well beyond my level. I especially enjoy when you play with the other people and sing too. You have an incredible talent for playing, singing and most importantly teaching. OK, I probably enjoy your playing the most, but your teaching has been such an encouragement to me. It's interesting that one of the songs you use as an example on this video, "Saved" is one of the first songs I was able to play. I am only able to play in one key so when I play 20 or 30 songs in a row, I always play a song that ends with the same note as the 1st note of the next song. Your way is much better. I praise and thank God for you. You are such a blessing to me. I watch your videos with my 3 year old granddaughter. Can't think of better TV for her to watch.

This is so helpful! I am a church pianist who has played this style of instrumentals for service invitation and for funerals, and have often been stumped when I end a song in one key but my next song’s key isn’t within the circle of 5ths or a half step higher. Thanks so much for this! You are an awesome testimony for the Lord! God bless you and your family!

Thank you so much for showing how to transition into a new key. I knew the rules but needed some more guidance how to get there. I didn’t know about the circle of fifths rule. I always love your tutorials and was super excited when it popped up on my phone. I’ve learned a lot during COVID and I’m frequently saying, “I learned that from Natalie” like I know you. 🤣😂🤣😂🤣
You’ve increased my passion for learning and teaching. Thank you !

“It’s to your advantage to know it in both keys..” Lol, it never occurred to me to just learn hymns in a new key when I find them like that! I bring my own hymn book to the nursing homes and just use that. 🙈 This is something I’ll try to grow in! :)

Thank you for uploading your QA’s and live videos. I’ve really enjoyed and learned more from your tutorials than I have my previous years of formal music education. Please do more! You’ve also inspired me to reacquaint myself to the keyboard during the past 6 mo after 20+ years of not playing. I have seen personal progress by going back to the basics of hymn playing and applying some of these nuggets of music theory and application to the piano. Unfortunately, there seems to few resources online in regards to the traditional hymn playing art...(a dying art, maybe?!) Your time and contribution is a blessing! (The COVID19 has also given me the time to practice) Who knows? Maybe I can serve in some church playing capacity soon in the future! God bless you!

Your videos are awesome! I watched your Q&A and I learned more in that one video than two years of being a Music Major. I've worked doing church gigs for 40 years, hundreds of weddings and funerals and ordinary services, as a bagpiper. And I have to say that the modern trend to modulate to a higher key for the last verse is something I dread! Because bagpipes can't do it. I tell the organist and choir director, but sometimes they "do what comes natural" and modulate, and I have to stop playing. There are a few Hymn-tunes with such a limited range that they can be played in two keys on the bagpipes, but they're a fourth apart (Bb and Eb). One such is HYFRYDOL, another is PLAINFIELD (LOWRY).

This only holds true so long as you dont move the key up a diminished fifth (the tritone.) For example the key of C to the key of Gb. But that rarely happens in practice.

In which case, you would still use the ii-V7 of the new key to change keys. That is the formula for every key change except half-steps, whole-steps, and up a fourth (using the Circle of Fifths), which only require the V7 of the new key.

    • @Harlem55
