I'm one of the few who enjoys Urban Champion as a very simple, basic fighter. As a kid, I had fond memories of playing this at a friend's house. I always loved when gameplay would stop when the police pass by. As an adult, I know it's not good. I still have fun with it though.

    Just discover ur series...
    Love to binge watch it...
By the way, when ur stamina runs out ( reach 000), the light punch will knock u down just like the heymaker..

Everyone who played this game did so because it was literally the only cart they owned and could play until Friday (where hopefully they got tp the rental store in time to get something good). I was that kid.

This game is an enhanced port of sorts to Game & Watch Boxing (sources say Boxing predates it by several months), which goes a long way to explain how prosaic it is; the core essence is barely touched, just smoother character animations and stage hazards were added. Boxing was again polished up for Game & Watch Gallery 4 for Game Boy Advance, minus the hazards though.
It could just be me speaking here, but if feels like the combat in Zelda II was built off of Boxing/Urban Champion, particularly when squaring off against Iron Knuckles and Stalfos.

I do remember this one from my uncle's NES collection... but yeah can't say it was one of my favorites.

Urban champion is great. Kinda sad to see a lot of people do not get it.

This game was released exactly 20 years before my birthday.

I think the two fellows are from rival sewer companies fighting over the poor job the opposite company is doing in covering the manholes I wonder if a simmilar process took in taking the troublesome credit for the game. I know I am unfairly accusing this horrible yet charming title of portraying the philosophical absurdity of the cycle of violence and the pointlessness of the blame game, but it did unfairly subject you to its gameplay.

Love your videos. Could you consider increasing the game audio. That is a massive part of the gaming experience and will make your videos even better.

When I started I was concerned that the game would drown me out, but over time I tweaked the game volume to higher levels.

I have always been confused by the (overwhelmingly American!) distaste for this game. It was a very accessible Vs. game with pretty simple controls, perfect for the 2 players focus of the NES / Famicom. Single player has little value due to the weakness of the CPU but the simple speed vs. strength allows for nice mind games among human players. Rather than Street Fighter II, its appeal is better understood if you compare Urban Champion to Wii Sports Boxing. I personally find this game aged much better than Mach Rider for instance. Good spiritual successors are Nidhogg and Divekick.
(I believe stamina depletion makes you weaker to light punches.)

Weirdly enough, this kind of reminds me of Punch Out. You have to squint a bit, but if you remove some of the junkier mechanics and change the viewpoint, you're most of the way there.

140 rounds of the same 3 or so screens ? I genuinely want to ask if programers at the time thought anyone would actually do that. Ever.

I think it's just that it's an arcade loop, but it's still awful.

There's an arcade version of Urban Champion that plays the same but adds a bit more variety to the visuals: the colour of your opponents' skin, hair, and clothes change and the sky changes from day to night as time passes.

3:27 are you really comparing a game mechanic from a 1984 fighter with STREET FIGHTER II? come on man... isnt that just a little unfair? smh
