  • The .300 Winchester Magnum is a belted, bottlenecked magnum rifle cartridge manufactured by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. Introduced in 1963, it is also known as the .300 Win Mag or the .300 WM, and was designed to fit in a standard rifle action. It is based on the .375 H&H Magnum, which has been blown out, shortened, and necked down to accept a .30 caliber (7.82 mm) bullet.
Despite being surpassed in performance by a handful of more powerful 30 caliber rifle cartridges like the .300 Weatherby Magnum, the .30 378 Weatherby Magnum, the .300 Remington Ultra Mag, the .300 Norma Magnum, the .30 Nosler, and the .300 PRC, the .300 Win Mag remains the most popular .30 caliber magnum with American hunters
Here are the top 5 reasons why the .300 Win. Mag. is still one of the best 30 caliber magnum rifle cartridges in the market today.

Well, in 30 cal, ammo availability is#1 308, #2 30-06, #3 300WM. All of the others almost imposible to find. And they are not catching up to the 300WM. 300 PRC,30 Nosler,300 Wby, 300 RUM. The 300 WSM easier to find. No need to look elswere.👍 I have a old 1917 US Enfield that needs rebarelling(But it will be in 35 Whelen) and a project to use a cheap used 300 Weatherby rifle to rebarrel to 300 WM. Then I can use the long 30 cal bullets to make 300PRC performace using the 300WM

How much energy at 500 yds do you need to kill an elk at 500 yds ?
Even Most hunting guides would say roughly between 1250-1500 ft lbs. The 30 -06 loaded with 210 grain ablr bullets generates far more than that
At 2600 fps has 1748 ft lbs of energy at 600 yds

      @762GhosT0
Why use a 300 magnum after 300 yds when today's modern 30-06 loads are producing up to 1900 ft lbs of energy at 600 yds?t Even a 300 magnum bullet begins to drop
After 300 yds .as well and the 30-06 doesn't drop that much more at 400 500 and 600 yds. To be honest.
So to take a shot at 500vyds with a 300 mag you still have to understand hold over.regaedless.and if someone doesn't can't comprehend a simple ballistic hold over reticle they have no business hunting with that rifle in the woods because a child could master it.
And bullet drop means very little at 500 yds between a 30-06 and a 300 magnum.that just means a 300 winchester magnums ballistic hold over reticle marks are just a little closer together than a 30-06 hold over marks in your scope.so looking through a scope and the differences between both reticles is virtually unnoticeable.
I like the 300 magnum but I'm using it much less today because I believe the advantages are negligible and don't kill big game any quicker.
What kills big game is choosing a properly constructed bullet and accuracy and I am more accurate with a rifle that kicks less .

That's an interesting take. Why wouldn't you just keep it as a 300Wby? Cost of ammo? If you're going to rebarrel it to seat longer bullets and are concerned with the box length, you may also consider a magnum length 700 or 70 action.

I know, Personally my action choice would be a Controlled round feed SS, But M70 or Others(Montana-Kimber) a bit pricy. And I have a 30-06 that I can push into the 3000Fps, But that old 1917 US Enfield will get a 35 Whelen barrel soon(Have to take a caliper to the magazine and check if it will hold a Mag lengh cartridge) The idea is a 7mm Rem Mag in a Mag action(to maximise the heavier bullets performace, equal to the 7PRC)(Used rifle market for a 7STW or 7RUM). Lighter than ussual for Me and grandson. It's fun to come up with your Cheap dream rifle build. Could buy a Ultralight Savage 28 Nosler for 1.2 -1.5K. A Win M70 SS my dream gun. .300 Win Mag is a great cartridge and I still love it. However, if you compare it to cartridges like 6.5 PRC, it looks pretty old.
The 6.5 PRC has less energy at the muzzle and up to ~600 yards. Beyond 600 yards, the PRC has an energy advantage. So both cartridges deliver more than enough energy at close range, while the 6.5 PRC has an advantage at extended ranges. Also, 6.5 PRC has much milder recoil.
Better long range performance + lower recoil make the 6.5 PRC a more balanced cartridge in my opinion. I got a Bergara in 6.5 PRC a few weeks ago and I#m more than happy with it.

Availability is not what decides if one design is better or worse.

The 30-378 Wea. Is the worst caliber idea Wea. had.
Speed is important but also efficency and that is why the 28 nosler is king in the 30 caliber speed camp.

Bergara claims “Remington pattern ” with their B14 series rifles. That applies only to the receiver . If you want to make changes, such as a 3rd party bottom metal, you can’t. Everything other than the receiver is proprietary to Bergara! The other source of confusion is “AICS Pattern” magazines. AICS “pattern” magazines is about the design, not the length. One might expect 300 Win Mag in an HMR “match” rifle, to have a match length magazine like the typical AICS 3.850. You would be wrong! The HMR uses Pmags regular AICS pattern Long Action magnum magazine, which has an approximate 3.53” max length. Depending on your intentions with a “Match” rifle, the short magazine could become a very severe handicap. And no. Bergara will not sell you a replacement bottom metal. You’re ok with the short actions. Don't take my comments wrong. I really like my B-14 HMR 300 Win Mag! It's always transported in a nice foam lined hard case!

There are many newer .30 caliber magnums that have several advantages over the .30 WM such as the ability to shoot much longer, higher BC bullets with higher velocities and better wind drift. The only disadvantage I see are the availability of factory ammo for those who choose to not handload their ammunition.
I have the .300 NM that is a excellent shooter even beyond 1,500 yards. The 300 PRC and .30 Nosler are also great new 30's.
The disadvantage of the 300 WM is that the long case hinders the ability to load the newer high BC bullets and be able to fit the magazines and the vast majority of all rifles chambered in the 300 WM have too slow of a twist rate to even stabilize the newer high BC bullets.

No big deal, If you can handle a 30-06, just a bit more push, depends on the ergonomics of the rifle, same cal will kick a lot more in one rifle than in another. As performace on game about the same as a 30-06. BUT you can reach out a bit more and with the right heavier bullet put down something big with more confidence. For some reason it's the 3RD most popular 30 Cal Cartridge out there. #1 308, #2 30-06 and #3 300WM. All the rest together don't come near(Forgot to mention the venerable 30-30 Winchester #4)

30/30 has stopping power, not distance so that's ruled out by 300wm. 30/06 is 500ft/lbs less and more distance drag than 300wm. 270w is flat but stopping power is smaller substantially than 300wm. Remember, it's either you or the bear, and if I ever have to shoot a bear, and not drift a bullet off its skull, it's 300wm all day long. Period.

@@garnettwhite5523 if its me or the bear, im packing the .375. .300 might make you think your thing is bigger in the deer woods, but the front shoulder of a bear doesn't really care about that. the .300 is the jacked up truck of hunting.
and also, you forget that in large parts of the US, 100 yards is long range because of the thick woods and brush. .300 is actually a worse option there.
.270 win, also considered the finest sheep round of all time.

@@hotramen5952 and yes I live in Canada. Where the bush does prevent sight at 50yds. I don't want an expensive, rare caliber like 375 h&h that's gonna be too much recoil. You're forgetting that 300 wm is a 375 casing necked to 30 cal. Same powder volume , higher velocity, smaller diameter bullet that goes through trees like butter and keeps going afterwards. I ain't aiming for a shoulder, I'm aiming for the face. Plus I've shot a bear with a 300wm and a cougar twice because I had too. Not because I was hunting those types of animals. All 3 times it stopped it dead. No movement. If I wanted a rare expensive caliber, which I do have, and I was gonna carry it for protection, it's my 348 Winchester. Still shoots 600 yards. 2800 ft lbs at the muzzle. 4+1 Browning model 71 lever action. Parent case 50-110 WCF. 200gr FTX.

The internet has rendered this channel rather useless. This dude doesn't recognize or even seem to know the 300 H&H the original 300 magnum, and arguably the best of the lot. You get 4 in the mag instead of 3 as a bonus. The Win Mag is a good cartridge to be sure. But to leave out the only 300 mag that existed for 40 years is just another example of youngsters who don't do their homework. It is the state of America today.
