Fantastic looking car. Other markets got the MUCH better 4cyl, the 3S-GE, ranging from 156hp-178hp or so, with a much sportier character and properly high revs.
Got myself a '98 UKDM MR2 earlier this month and I'm in love. 170ps in these cars is no slouch at all. Just a pity the yanks don't have as good of an NA version. The GE head makes all the difference in NA cars.
@@glenn9k The BEAMS 3S-GE is cool, but they shoulda given us a turbo version from the off. Or they should have made a full BEAMS 3S-GTE to send off the SW20 in style (though it would have been unlikely because they didn't want to usurp the Supra)
@@Icemann336 Yep a turbo version would have been cool (I have a JDM Rev3 Turbo coupe myself), but the choice of a powerful NA is always nice too. The engine character of a NA is hard to beat.
7:23. If you had said anything other than V6 I would have called you a liar. I have a 2GR in my MR2, and it really makes the car. NA V6 is just such a wonderful thing in this platform.
When I was in high school, a buddy had a yellow MR2 and I fell in love with it. Always wanted to get the second generation MR2 but never could afford it. Such a gorgeous car, even to modern standards (for me, at least). If I could ever afford to get a collection of cars, the MR2 is definitely getting added for mines!
0:32 "Not that special an engine" Hang on.. first let us change the mind set and why. Back when this car came out it was late 89 the common and numerous contemporary cars around it were carburettor, single cam, 8 valves and either 3 speed auto or 4 speed manuals. This MR2 however had: Twin cam, 16 valves and Multi Point Fuel Injection To just have 1 item of the above (some even only had 12 instead of 16 valves or only single rather than multi point injection etc) is a performance upgrade. Likened to upgrading a GTi Golf to twin turbo as 1 option, then 4wd as another option and active suspension as another. Today the list of 16 valves, Twin Cam, MPFI may be unsurprising but IT certainly was not back then. Not trying to be insulting but just correcting the comment by putting it in the perspective of 1989 not 2019, give a better sense of the performance and appreciation of the features.
Two other items non-stock for ‘94 which was not mentioned. •The rear spoiler is different •The rear engine lid has been swapped since NA does not have the raised vents.
90's japanese sports cars like this, supra, 3000gt, rx7, prelude, s2k, and the eclipse all look like the bodies were poured into a mold and set up perfectly... do you know what I mean? they look so symmetrical and pleasing to the eyes that they are beautiful! It was the same kinda look as the nix and the c5 corvette. the c5 vette's interrior is atrocious though! its like a fisher price rubbermaid plastic garbage bad with a dead hooker rotting in it like most c5 owners have
My dream car...I think of this car everyday, one day I’ll have one
Did u get it?
Did you get it?
I owned one exactly like this back in 2001 when I was 22... What a fantastic car for a Varsity young man...
It does have a trunk behind the engine, 5 cubic feet
Fun Fact: You can fit a full size igloo cooler back there

Exactly 👍😁

@@Icemann336 It really does. I wish we would have gotten the BEAMS 200hp NA version in Europe.

As a 1990 SW20 owner, loved your video.
Such a beautiful car, glad to say I bought another after regretfully selling my first one.

You never know how much you miss something til it's gone. Gr8 vid, Big Z.
This car kooks like it was designed in the 2000s crazy how nice it looks
Someone know the top speed of the MR2 W20 2.2L the one with no turbo?
Hello from Puerto Rico always looking at vids.
Check out dia national del Mazda Quebradillas Puerto Rico.
Wow - what a beauty! Love it. The style, the wheels and the color. I really like the back of the car. Pretty good bodystyle. Great review as always. 👍
5sfe was also surprisingly a Camry motor !

They did make a turbo
Yes, it's odd he didn't seem aware of the turbo option.
Next video: “I bought an MR2!”
i really like this review, thank you

The dodge that drove past him 2:02
What a trauma with the V6🤣 .... All good but it was better to focus on what you have in your hands, that is, the 2.2.
that mr2 has a 2gr now. lol
For real?
@@djpollo2474 saw it at TCS Motorsports for a 2gr swap a few months ago.
Nice
That car is so ugly 🤢
