  • Vitamin D. I don't know why so many people are obsessed with it, but there are two new studies out about it in JAMA Internal Medicine. We've even got multiple episodes of Healthcare Triage about it. What's one more? This is Healthcare Triage News.

    I'm more interested in whether there's vitamin D trials on mental illness/mood. It's often prescribed for SAD (seasonal affective disorder) or "winter blues" in very cloudy/cold areas (like Canada...there's just so much grey here in the winter).

    • @garvythecapricorn
      @garvythecapricorn 9 лет назад +3

      Kieran Mcgarry I have bipolar disorder and Vitamin D was suggested to me to reduce depression issues. I think it was also suggested because I live in the beautifully cloudy Pacific Northwest.

      garvythecapricorn Same here, except I've just got regular depression. I don't know if I was deficient before, or if it has any effect at all. I'n not much one for placebos.

    Ehh the problem is that many, many people are deficient in vitamin D. I was/am one of those people and I do benefit a lot from supplementation.

  • @vcostor
    @vcostor 9 лет назад +5

    Vitamin D is still a good supplement for people who live in northern regions with lack of sun is it not?
    Northern Canada being the north I am talking about.

    • @graphicgraphites
      @graphicgraphites 9 лет назад +2

      vcostor Yeah, living in a really cold place with very little sun for a huge chunk of the year, I had been found to be fairly deficient in vitamin D. It's really not uncommon, and it's kind of annoying that he didn't clarify that actual deficient people were not the focus of the studies.

    As someone who's been vit D deficient in the past, this was fascinating. I'm hadn't heard about any of this before.
    I would say deficiency sucked, made me get tired early on in the day, so maybe don't go the other way and stop thinking it's important- balance is good (also exercising got me out in the sun more, thus helping my deficiency so yay exercise :) )

    • @ghuegel
      @ghuegel 9 лет назад +10

      Socken Yeah, these kind of studies don't address people with an actual deficiency. I'd hate for people who really need supplemental Vit. D to stop taking it based on them.

    • @unvergebeneid
      @unvergebeneid 9 лет назад +2

      Dave Power The problem is, however, that the estimates vary widely on how many people actually are affected by a vitamin D deficiency. None of my doctors have ever asked me about vitamin D or measured my levels (which still wouldn't have solved the problem of knowing what the levels ought to be) while most of the scientists I heard on the topic said something to the effect of "In Winter? Where _you_ live? Almost everyone is deficient."
      Anyway, while people still figure this out, I'd rather err on the side of taking a cheap, safe and useless supplement than on the side of "woops, we now know you should have taken that cheap supplement that's almost impossible to overdose for the last ten years and now you've been lacking this important hormone that's involved in all kinds of functions sorry not sorry kthxbye."

    • @neeneko
      @neeneko 9 лет назад

      Dave Power This is what kinda bugs me about videos titled like this. They are not 'debunking vitamin D', they are going over specific myths. It would be like producing a video entitled 'exercise debunked!' and going over myths regarding specific exercises and their failure to produce various outcomes people thought they did.
      Tackling myths and hype are great things, but such packaging has a real 'baby with the bathwater' feel to it.

    The thing about these debunk studies are that they are done based on random things like falls. Or done on patients with severe conditions. When it doesn't solve those things, people use the studies to claim it's completely useless to supplement. Of course on the other side people over-emphasize or make outrageous claims of the actual benefits, but I still err on the side of supplementation. If they could do life long studies of people with similar exercise habits and food habits, with vs without supplementation then that would be amazing... but they can't, so it's super debatable when it comes to supplements. I would say it breaks even as far as studies that purport benefits vs no effect.

    I'd like to see a study showing the affects of oral vitamin D supplements on people who are actually deficient. Vitamin D is a big problem were I am, when 6 months of the year you simply won't be out in the sun, it's down when you get to work, and setting when you leave. It's easy to say "just get outside more" when you live somewhere mostly sunny.

    I hate these studies that focus only on Vitamin D in respect to its effects on calcium, when Vitamin K2 is the deciding factor on what Caclium does in the body. It release two proteins which literally pull calcium from places where it doesnt belong and puts it where it belongs. If you k2 levels are insufficient, no amount of vit d and calcium supplementation will really help. Thus having that confirmed in studies is basically meaningless.

    Healthcare Triage My doc prescribed vit D supplementation because (after testing) my level was below normal range. They did the same for B12 and folate too, after specific blood tests on those. Is this wrong, as a general strategy?
    FWIW the outcome concern they had (for both) was not bone density or blood pressure (mine are fine), but depression.

      Sai I think the gist of the video is to discourage sole reliance on Vitamin D for preventing injury in the elderly population, and instead to promote physical exercise (perhaps in conjunction with Vitamin D supplements to decrease the risk of the fall injuries.
      If you are seeing a doctor and they prescribed you vitamin D due to a deficiency, take it! :)

    My doctor prescribed vitamin D in response to a blood tested deficiency AND the fact that I have high blood pressure. Sounds like the blood pressure part isn't going to help. But is a (smallish) deficiency still a problem? Are there benefits to vitamin D supplementation in general?
    I'm concerned that this video seems to throw the baby out with the bathwater. Are we saying it doesn't do the things we think it does? Or are we saying not to supplement, period? This needs to be clarified.

  • @KungFuChess
    @KungFuChess 8 лет назад

    Better to see trials that test vitamin D through sun exposure then supplementation. The way you assimilate D through sunlight differs from he way we assimilate it through a supplementation. If your designed to make it endogenously, your not supposed to take it as a supplement. Better to get it the way you were designed to get it.

    You are giving people a false sense that Vitamin D supplementation is irrelevant in diet. You should mention that Vitamin D is NEEDED for the expression of over 1,000 of our genes. Most of the population is deficient in Vitamin D. Or what about the correlation of Vitamin D and testosterone levels. Or that the studies that show Vitamin D can prevent a VARIETY of cancers.... Many of your videos state what specific supplementation cannot do.. why not explain what they can do.

      desertraven Currently the research is inconclusive. But very little has been done. There have been a few studies that show that people who report SAD are not more likely to be vitamin D deficient. Even if there's a link, there's a possible misinterpretation in causality - that depression causes people to move around and go outside less, lowering their vitamin D levels.

    • @desertraven

      dbe471 I'm a psych major - I don't pretend to be an expert on the subject - but I did figure it was some sort of feedback loop... Depressed because of low vitamin D... so don't go outside/eat well to get vitamin D... become more depressed because of low vitamin D...

    Well of course exercise is better for balance and strength than a vitamin pill! What did you expect? For it to be some kind of steroid? And according to the graph at 1:19, vitamin D does seem to have an effect on the rate of injuries, which makes sense as better bones density relates to better bone strength and less fractures. The effect seems to be a small 1-ish%, but the pill is cheap and you're not doing harm; might as well take it. It doesn't stop you from doing exercise. And you should exercise, to avoid injury and for a slew of other reasons.
    Sorry, Aaron, but it seems to me that your dislike of vitamin supplement makes you draw conclusions way too fast, while the link between lower bone density and fracture is well established. Because physics.
