  • Cholesterol! For decades it's been demonized as the reason so many people have heart disease. We 've been watching it, and avoiding it like the plague.
    Why? Does that do any good? The answer may surprise - and depress you. This is Healthcare Triage.

    "avoiding it like the plague"
    A slight difference in the level of avoidance, I must say. For example, I never eat butter, but I spread plague on my sandwich every morning.

    I moved and started going to a new doctor and he was shocked to see how low my cholesterol was; admitted he had never seen such low levels in his entire career and asked about my lifestyle and diet. I told him I ate very little meat but eggs were a staple in my diet and I'm generally too lazy to cook so I eat lots of salads. He frowned and said, "well, you shouldn't eat eggs because of the cholesterol." O_O

    High cholesterol isn't a cause of heart disease, it's a symptom of heart disease. As you said, we need it, and it is used for repairing the body among other things. That said, it is still a good indictor that something is wrong, because if your cholesterol is high, then something is wrong in your body. But high cholesterol isn't the problem, it's the symptom. I hate how we claim so much stuff is a cause of problems when they are actually symptoms, it has really screwed up our diets...

    • @justanaverageguy912
      @justanaverageguy912 9 лет назад +18

      Diana Peña
      i... i don't even...
      rape is non-consentual intercourse, not insamination.
      cows can't really give consent anyway and consent for intercourse is actually pretty rare in the animal kingdom, so rape is actually more common ("normal") than consentual sex.
      so no, it's not rape and your comment is very complain-worthy.

    • @InorganicVegan
      @InorganicVegan 9 лет назад +3

      These milk breeders jerk off male cows against their will and shove that sperm in a female cow's vagina against her will to constantly keep her pregnant so she can live a fifth of her usual live expectancy. If you did that to a human, people would be flying off the walls and filing rape charges because it's rape.

    • @justanaverageguy912
      @justanaverageguy912 9 лет назад +18

      Diana Peña
      it still would be considered rape, contrary to impregnating someone without consent. that would be considered "grievous bodily harm".
      impregnating is not a sexual activity, "shoving up a dildo" someones "ass" is considered one.
      "male cows" LOVE to be "jerked off", this is not done against their will (that wouldnt even work).
      they use an artificial cow that is then humped by the bull. this has to be done very rarely, since cows are insaminated artifically and one ejaculation can be used to impregnate hundreds of cows.
      (and as stated before, they love it. for them it is the same as actually having intercourse with a cow.)
      looks like you got your entire knowledge from the usual badly researched peta-propaganda and then you just filled the blanks on your own (ofc. wrong).
      please stop talking about things that you know nothing about, if people would do that we would have a lot less quarrel on this planet.

    The worst part of the cholesterol scare is that foods high in cholesterol, like eggs and shellfish, are actually super good for you. Moreover, a type of shellfish known as bivalves (oysters, mussels, and clams), are actually super good for the environment as well as being super healthy--they literally have a lower carbon footprint than plant-based protein sources like tofu and lentils, AND don't use any fresh water or cause habitat destruction AND actually remove pollution from the water!

    I can eat (nominally) whatever the heck I want, if I make it myself. The more processed, the more saturated fat/transfat that's needed to make it delicious and shelf-stable. Obviously I'll still eat out, but keeping that in mind... it makes it a lot easier. I don't know why it's taken 31 years to make that sink in, but thanks very much. I appreciate it.

    High Cholesterol and fat play no part in heart disease. My dad was on a low fat diet and when diagnosed with coronary heart disease, his cholesterol was a bit lower than normal! He did however eat a lot of carbohydrates which we all know raise insulin and are converted to glucose. Insulin is your answer to heart disease. High insulin causes a huge range of issues in the body and what causes the high insulin? 1. Carbs and sugar, 2. Eating too often. Eat once a day, one big meal that's high in calories and fat, low in carbs and no sugar! You will have reduced your chances of getting heart disease and diabetes and so many other diseases to almost 0.

    If you study physiology regarding cardiovascular disease, and look at the mechanisms. Cholesterol being the main culprit makes absolutely no sense at all.
    Btw, your body very closely regulates cholesterol. We have systems in place to do that. Any excess cholesterol is secreted through our waste. If you have more cholesterol in your system, there’s a high chance that your body’s demand for it is high because it’s being utilized for a function.

    I seem to remember some recent factoid about there being more than one "kind" of LDL cholesterol, and that it was a sticky "nugget" type that tended to form plaques in blood vessels. I also remember a discussion on what factors could cause an increase of that "kind" of LDL cholesterol. I can't seem to find information about this in a quick search (I am getting ready for the day), but I would love to see more on it if it becomes available.

    i think it comes as a shock to most people that dietary consumption of cholesterol doesn't particularly matter in otherwise healthy individuals. our body ramps up and down cholesterol synthesis depending on how much you eat. so unless you're eating massive quantities of cholesterol (or taking a medication) your cholesterol levels will probably not vary too much.
    personally, i eat 4 whole "jumbo" eggs every day (235mg each; 940mg total) then + whatever else cholesterol i eat that day. at my last check up, i can't remember what my exact numbers where, but my doctor said i had the best cholesterol numbers he'd ever seen.
    in my medical school courses this year they told us that it wasn't the LDL levels that matter, rather the HDL levels and perhaps the ratio between the two.

    I want to see if there is a direct relationship between sugar and cholesterol. The body produces cholesterol as part of the process for transporting sugars through the body. could it be that Sugar is the actual villain here instead of fats or cholesterol rich foods as we had been lead to believe? My bet is that high sugar intake (regardless if you are a diabetic or not) has a direct relation to high cholesterol levels within the body.

The "hypo-responders", do they absorb the dietary cholesterol and downregulate their own production, or is there something about their GI tract that simply doesn't allow them to absorb as much cholesterol as the other 30%?

    Dietary guidelines are an effective frame of reference for nutrition professionals and clients alike to measure overall adherence to a quality diet. They give everyone a better idea of what kinds of food-related goals to set for themselves and recommend to others.
    However.
    While we can use these guidelines as a reference point, it's important to remember, as Aaron mentioned here, that every individual is different. In this case, cholesterol does not necessarily affect every person the same exact way. Relying on general guidelines too heavily can hinder both disease care and prevention.
    Health professionals, especially dietitians, should start thinking about communicating to the public the importance of individualized care. Physicians and licensed nutrition professionals, working as a team, can change the way patients are cared for, such as in cases of heart disease. There are neither unlimited amounts of time nor resources/bodies to make it feasible, but every patient and client alike has different needs. One recommendation, or treatment, certainly will not work for everyone the same. It takes a combination of monitoring from the medical side as well as the dietary side.

    It's becoming a more common thought (if not a completed study) that the liver "knows" how much Cholesterol the body needs and makes sure that it has it. If you're not eating CHL, the liver makes more. If you're adding CHL through diet, the liver makes less. My personal experience when being diagnosed "hyperlipidemic", total CHL 325 and an urgent call to start statins was that dietary CHL made absolutely no difference. After 90 days of (almost) total abstinence from dietary fat...my levels dropped less than 10 pts. Why your body may need "more" cholesterol is perhaps the real question...for another time.

    Lol eating low cholesterol meant eating almost no eggs and little meat then avoiding saturated fat means cutting out all animal products including butter, cheese, eggs, milk and meats (even lean). So basically what you have to avoid would still stay the same.

    I'm only 27, I have high cholesterol. My doctor sent me to a dietitian, I was not told that I needed to cut back on cholesterol intake at all, I was told I needed to keep my saturated fat intake at less than 20g per day. One cheese burger is 20g, one milkshake is 25g. I haven't had a real cheese burger in 2 years, I want one badly.
    I'm waiting for next weeks video.

      ***** Since march I have changed my diet a lot. I'm just barely on the positive side of the cholesterol border with no pills at all and although I can't quite pull it off, I'm realizing the ideal diet seems to be about 90% plant based and 10% animal based.

    What the "vast majority of Americans think" about food in general is driven by moneyed interests with only one concern. Even stuff that never contained gluten are declared 'gluten free'. Studies showing no real link between dietary cholesterol intake and serum cholesterol levels pre-date the studies cited by this guy ironically. There are still food labels declaring 'cholesterol free' on substances that never contained dietary cholesterol in the first place. Low cholesterol diets were recommended to heart attack survivors from the late 50's- Oh god, don't eat eggs. This was before the science was complete. Fat in doesn't mean fat on and i'm not talking about trans fats/ hydrogenated crap either! The people offering dietary advice have turned the 'food pyramid' nearly upside down and have been telling us what to eat while diabetes and obesity have gone through the roof. The FDA is compromi$ed by big Pharma! BTW- Don't take statins!! especially females. Research-Science! - deal in facts then live with the truth!

    You can't say LDL is the "bad" cholesterol without explaining the difference between the kind of particles in it. LDL-a and LDL-b; people whose LDL particles are predominantly small and dense (b), have a threefold greater risk of coronary heart disease. Furthermore, the large and fluffy type of LDL (a) may be protective.

    I've got an app on my tablet, where you put in age, ethnicity, cholesterol, HDL, blood pressure, if you smoke, if you have diabetes, or are on blood pressure meds, and it will calculate your 10 year risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. If your LDL is 70 to 189mg/dL and your calculated 10yr risk is >7.5% it might be time for a statin.

      Congrats so far, good for you!! :) It's been tremendously hard to eat vegan for the first time too.Most affordble sources are probably beans and chickpeas, lentils are good too. Tofu is nice too (but not for everyone) and soy products (in moderation) as well. Then you have your fancied out sources like quinoa and tempeh and chia and whatnot, but tbh those are neither very sustainable nor affordable (to me at least ;) )
      As for an important "beginner's" tip it's really really important that you always eat enough. If you're hungry you'll certainly crave meat and or cheese more (God knows I did) an are more likely to break your habit :D

      That's right "we" certainly a lot of new stuff if we cherrypick conclusions out of a study as it pleases us. It's a subconclusion with regards to a specific subgroup, diabetic people (and an interesting one at that but certainly not one that could be genralised to the whole public).
      Can we all please agree that debates about the health aspects of vegan and omnivore diets should be held on as neutral, non-ideological ground as possible? Other facets of veganism definitely warrant some level of justifiable emotion but this one does not, especially when it comes to interpreting data.
      Because As for your "meat eaters are stupid"- don't even go there, Im so very sure that you're better than this. It's these kind of statements people hate us vegans for. It's sad really- and counterproductive which is almost infinitely worse in my opinion.

    Some things said in this video are not a given and confuse me based on other peer-reviewed, non-industry funded studies that show the opposite of what was being said.
    For example, peer-reviewed studies show that If you feed just one portion of meat to vegetarians their cholesterol goes up 20% within a month. But when they went back to being vegetarian their cholesterol dropped back to the "safe" range.
    Also, as said in the video, our bodies create their own cholesterol (all you need). We don't need to add extra cholesterol in to our diets.
    This, I feel, is a more accurate study on the cause of atherosclerosis and the role cholesterol has in heart disease: nutritionfacts.org/video/eliminating-the-1-cause-of-death/

  • @Guestotherajjjdb
    @Guestotherajjjdb 8 лет назад

    What is funny about cholesterol is that cholesterol in itself is not bad! Just as it was briefly mentioned in the video, cholesterol is needed in the body as a building block for many things. Also, when people think of LDL and HDL those two terms are NOT cholesterol! Those are two different types of lipoproteins that carry cholesterol in the body. Both of those lipoproteins do different things, which is why the LDL protein is considered bad and the HDL protein good. Many physicians stress to patients to change their diets to lower their cholesterol which is absolutely false! The cholesterol that is eaten makes such a SMALL percentage of the body's overall cholesterol level. So what is the culprit to high cholesterol levels? An unhealthy liver! Reasons for an unhealthy liver could be for many reasons. This should be the focus for people with high levels of cholesterol, because clearly it needs to be managed.

    LOL, one study says this the other says the opposite..anything you want to believe can be proven to be true, so I'm just a lab rat for my own science experiments..now testing out ketogenic diet.. I love watching how crazy people become with the faith of their food choices.. I am an atheist when it comes to such things..i don't believe in the almighty path to correct eating due to all the conflicting information, but yet I study on.. my research so far has led me to believe that we need to be eating a variety of fats balanced in almost equal proportions(long, medium, and short chain fatty acids) and processed grains are worthless. The only thing I have faith in is that Ramen Noodles are the devil..good/cheap/filling..and they never break down..you will never lose weight if they are in your diet and eventually your blood pressure will get screwed from the sodium.. They completely don't give a shit about the calorie in calorie out thing.

      Diana Peña
      Health: Not quite, a vegan diet is VERY restrictive, frankly put boring. My mental health would suffer and I'd probably just resort to vitamin supplements anyway.
      Wallet: Depends what you eat, some nuts are more expensive than vegetarian/meat products.
      Animals: Possibly, but see environment.
      Staring People: I don't believe you, or think you can back it up.
      Environment: Here is the tricky one, studies go back and forth and both sides lie. The only thing I have learnt is that a mixed diet (vegetarian) works best (sustainable) for the environment, or one of which we eat a lot of bugs. (gross)
      To feed the global population a vegan diet apparently just does not work, fertile land runs out quite fast, you end up hurting the environment more, not to mention all the land clearing you are doing and animals killed during harvesting the food you are now mass producing.

      Eppiox "To feed the global population a vegan diet apparently just does not work, fertile land runs out quite fast, you end up hurting the environment more, not to mention all the land clearing you are doing and animals killed during harvesting the food you are now mass"
      I'd argue against this without advocating veganism, animal products (except fish) require large amounts of vegetable products to sustain, one number I've seen thrown around a lot is 10; 10 acres of crops for oe acre of cattle. But that number is probably fake.
      In any case, eliminating animal products would probably result in more increase in vegetable supply than vegetable demand.

      Yeah vegetables fruits and such, things like wheat and rice also.
      I've read numbers like 1000 litres of water for 1kg of meat, and then the reverse like loads of water for plant life equivalent in value to the meat..
      The only one I've found that I believed/values seemed most legitimate is the one about eating bugs :/
