What pissed me off about that was as soon as Sark was hired, we all heard two names right off the bat for OC. BoB and Adam Gase. Saban didn’t even go SEARCHING for an OC. Only hired BoB because he knew and Belichick knew him. That’s on him. He needs to go out and actually search for an elite offensive coordinator who can actually TEACH and SCHEME against another team. This was the single WORST hire of his entire tenure at Alabama and I don’t even think it’s close. Same with Pete Golding. Since he took over for Tosh Lupoi in mid-late 2018 season this defense has been Charmin ULTRA SOFT.

    Reassess the dynasty forecast.
Going back for a little history here so this may get a little winded. Please bear with me.
"Bear" knew the Veer was over. Modern ball was coming in and the Veer just could not put serious points on the board to save a defense. A prior Bama Alumnus came in. He was asked by Paul to do what he himself could not do. A guy with one leg slightly shorter than the other was asked to take it over and make the needed changes. Jackie Sherril was waiting to bust Bama out if Paul does not do what was needed to be done. So this Baltimore Colts Receiver comes in. You know the one, the one that was wide open in The Jets end zone and his legs could go in a long enough stride to catch a perfect bomb from John Unitas (colts lost 16-7). He comes in to Bama and makes the much needed changes. It works for Bama but the change was too slow. This new coach gets booted.
Elsewhere? East Carolina, Baylor and Rice are having a field-day with teams such as FSU, Gainsville and Miami.
Speed forward to the 1980's, 90's and very early 2000's. Everyone was complaining that these Florida Universities were "picking on smaller schools" to pad their numbers as "Dynasty's." Nobody said a dam*n word when Rice and East Carolina was absolutely decimating Florida State.
Maryland, NC State were doing the same thing to all Florida teams (this is all back in the 60's). No one said anything.
All of a sudden Don Shula enters The State of Florida and The Dolphins go 17-0, With consistent winning seasons.
Something happened to College football in Florida. Three dynasty's erupted simultaneously.
Why? Coaching spin-off's.names like Bowden, Spurrier, Andrews, Fisher etc, etc. coming coming out and spreading out. Take away Bo Jackson and Auburn dies after Pat Sullivan and briefly revives with Cam. All three major Florida Universities put together winning season's with bowl/championship winners. All three continued and well past 2000 but you could start to see the fade. Tennessee has put together good teams on some fantastic seasons. As Clemson, Georgia and Louisiana have done...but no dynasty's.
The Bear came to a close. Shula came to a close. BB came to a close as did the Canes. What happened?
    There were no transfer portals.
Notre Dame did not beat The Canes when Jimmy Johnson decided to go for two instead of kicking a field goal to tie and go to overtime...The Hurricanes simply lost. Lou Holtz did not win that game, Miami lost.
There have been brief stints at outstanding runs on a season in between the years for all of these dynasty teams.
Why does a Sumlin get replaced by a dynasty coach that DOES NOT FIT?
Now at 86 million he is laughing on the self-sale he made and can not back it up.
No coach between Paul "Bear" Bryant and Nick Saban did it either. Jimbo got close for BB, real close. Meyer got close to Spurrier. They both were good stints to keep a legend and a team on the front-burner. JJ smoke it for Miami...a Dynasty he amply carried on with.
All dynasty's fade at some point. What makes a dynasty and why therefore do they last as long as they do? But they still fade. Saban will keep this one strong as Meyer did in Gainsville. Gus did in Auburn (though not an actual dynasty).
You know why, so do I. Sumlin should have stayed at Texas A&M. Jimbo should have stayed at FSU, Spurrier should have stayed at Gainsville. Mullen should have stayed at Mississippi State. Hayden Frye types don't bounce around all over country. Schembeckler's don't either.
What happened? Look real close and you will see it. Alabama ain't no different.

But, after that game, I became an Alabama fan for life. It was just the confidence that oozed from the pores of each and every player. Unfortunately, I have only seen this come from about 5 players in the last 2 years. I was thinking that the Anxiety excuse was crap. But after listening to Saban the last month and he took on the responsibility for that anxiety because he said that the players had a different kind of motivation the last 2 seasons. Do you know what I am talking about? But, after listening to Saban after this loss to LSU, I truly believe that the messaging to the players has been different in the way he talks about his coaches and the pressure put on the players to win. I promise you, Coach Saban, will fix this and they have some great recruiting classes come in and I truly believe we will be back and the Bama Standard will return along with the players not having the same mindset that I have seen the last 2 years.

Josh you are absolutely right that the Bama team that lost to Clemson with three seconds on the clock was the best team in college football. The reason why Alabama lost that game was because of Lane Kiffin and Saban. Kiffin was selected as the HC at FAU after Saban recommended him. Alabama had three weeks to prepare for Clemson and Kiffin whi was the OC simply stop coming to practice and spent the majority of his time at FAU. He decided. to return to Bama three days before the Championship Game and Saban fired him. Saban then put Sarkisian in charge of the offense for the game but he hadn't coached or calls plays in two years. So Alabama went into the game crippled on offense. But what was really strange is that RB Bo Scarborough took over the game and Clemson could not stop him. He broke his foot in the second quarter and forced Alabama to depend on Freashmen Jalen Hurts. Every Bama fan and the media have said the same thing about that game that if Saban would have let Kiffin call that game because he knew the players Alabama would have won the game with no problem. Kiffin was very immature at that time and all he had to do was to simply show up and coach the Bama offense for his last game and he blew it. That would have given Saban 8 NATTYs within a 12 year period.

The last 2 yrs have been filled with ups and downs. The similarities have been Golding and O'Brien. Under previous coordinators the O line knew how to block. The OC would run the ball near the goal line instead of throwing passes we see knocked down or picked off. When the team got a lead, there was no way they were going to give that up. The loss to TN was due in part to the insane play calling of Bill O'Brien. You run the ball when you're trying to end a game. You don't throw passes that fall incomplete and give your opponent enough time to drive. The last 2 yrs have been squads with no identity. They commit penalties that don't allow them to succeed. Not sure who is to blame on that but Bama needs an OC and DC that understand what it takes to close out a game. These 2 men do not understand that basic concept.

It could simply be that the level of excellence Saban reached for a decade isn't sustainable for much longer than that. It was already unprecedented historically, so maybe the program has peaked out and needs to undergo a down cycle, like the economy sometimes after several years of continuous growth. What goes up must come down.

  • @williamtexas261
    @williamtexas261 Год назад +14

On point analysis of the problem at Alabama. Saban respects and does so much to help coaches I almost suspect he will privately talk to those he wants to leave before the regular season ends and suggest they quickly find another opportunity before he acts immediately after the bowl game so they don’t have to be “fired”. Then they can say the left Alabama for an opportunity at XYZ University. He has mellowed some over the years and with grandchildren and he may be a little upset with himself for waiting so long. “Ass chewing” frequency may need to increase.
But let’s also remember there are over 120 FBS schools who would love to be Alabama’s worst day or season under Saban. I think now there are 131 D-1A football schools and due to Saban’s unprecedented success, every Alabama loss brings euphoric joy to 130 fan bases and in many cases makes those fans happier than when their own team wins games against opponents not named Alabama. Beating Saban’s Alabama teams in the regular season instantly becomes one of or THE most iconic win in the opponent school’s history - look at the dangerous “field stormings” after teams beat Alabama. Sadly most of the schools make little to no effort to protect the Alabama coaches and players in these events. Auburn still boasts frequently of beating Alabama in the 1972 regular season - not much else to lean on in those 50 years.
I like Josh’s comment on the idiocy of clowns saying the Saban Alabama Dynasty is over. Clowns like “Scab” Scarbinsky and Fineclown have probably said that 8 or more times each during Saban’s tenure. After his first season (7-6) having a lot of disgruntled players from the Shula time his worst season I think was 10-3 - another year the above “self anointed” experts both claimed the dynasty was over. How many schools wish 10-3 was their worst season in the last 15 years? Also look at how much money is generated and how much more is spent by every school on football now - strongly influenced by Saban’s success.

Saban has always made changes when changes were due. He did it when the spread option was a new thing and his defenses were getting destroyed. He hired coordinators that could run it and defend against it. The issue with Bama right now is they are still running a dual threat offense with a pocket passer. When Bama had great receivers, that worked. But last season and especially this season, Young needed to be a dual threat to be effective. Next season you might see more of that with the next QB, whoever that will be. But Saban wants to have options at the QB position and I know he wants to feature running the ball more than they have the past 3 or 4 seasons.
Defensively, the coaching carousel caught up with Saban. I have always been amazed at how Bama could still do it with so many assistants and coordinators move on. But, he doesn't always nail it and both coordinators aren't the Bama standard.

I liken those changes to something that’s hard to understand for most people. Mr Saban has had a long and successful career. At the head of a program you have to understand that over years and years of experience you see details that others do not and see changes that need to be made based on observation of outcomes in games, in practice, in the locker room and off campus entirely. A good example that’s a little easier to understand is you have a problem with your car. It’s not running right. It makes a funny noise. You take it to a really good mechanic and he tells you within an hour exactly what the problem is, what needs to happen to fix it, and how long it will take to fix it. There’s thousands of parts and dozens of individual systems at work to make the vehicle go and that man just spent an hour with it and knows everything that’s wrong and in some cases what’s starting to fail. That’s the kind of job a head coach has managing a program.

He should lighten up some and realize that he has won 6 national championships at Bama and if he decided to hang em up at the end of this season or whenever he retires as one of the top five to have ever coached football. I think Saban is a fantastic teacher, leader, co-ordinator, recruiter and genius.

I think you absolutely nailed it in this segment. Change is a comin.’ I have not been a fan of O’Brien since the day he was hired. That feeling intensified when he said that Saban was his only call during the offseason. There is no creativity in routes. He’s too predictable. And, he’s too NFL pass happy. Sure, you have Bryce Young (thank goodness) but you also went and got one of the best running backs in the country and for what, to be the leading receiver on the team? I advocated for Golding for a long time when others wanted him gone. Now, I’m not sure if he’s the problem or the 3-3-5 defense. Probably best to get rid of them both just in case. Both Kiffin and Sark were able to adjust on the fly. O’Brien just puts everything on Bryce. We need someone who knows the college game here and now and knows how to make proper adjustments.

BoB is like an egotistical jazz player; doing way too much and going overboard with stuff no one needed or asked for, and forgetting about the overall composition. And the fundamentals of tackling have disappeared overnight. And I'll say it - Alabama needs Scott Cochran back.

I'm with you on Pete - I was in his corner for a long time. Defended him. But after this game, the defense just lacks intensity. Lacks explosive blitz packages, defense formations (remember when we use to confuse opposing QBs?), and just general turnover/playmaking play. I was hoping he'd finally turn the corner but its just not there... Don't get me started on Bill, I feel like he forces everything through the passing game. When you roll 3 pass plays and don't have outlets for Bryce... its tough to move the changes or get any momentum.

The defense can not get a “stop” unless it’s MissSt. The offense looks like “sandlot play.” Brice looks like Fran Tarkington running for his life and trying the save our arses. He couldn’t pull it off this time. He Needed help from the other ten players FOR A CHANGE. SMH

People make the mistake of seeing individual talent as team talent. It's the skill of the team vs. the skills of the other team. It does little good to have a great deep defense and a thin shallow offense. It's what you put on the field, not what appears on a piece of paper or that gets on the recruitment charts.

Alabama's defense has been in a steady decline ever since Kirby Smart left and became Georgia's head coach. The stats don't lie!!!

I agree about the Coordinators. BOB has got to go. He can't call plays and doesn't develop QBs, go back to when Milroe played for proof of that. Golding doesn't need to call plays either. He doesn't have the talent for it. I don't think we should get rid of Golding because he is good at recruiting and coaching linebackers just not even an ok play caller. Golding's deficiencies have been masked by the good OCs we had in the past.
