"I'm not looking to add too much power, I'm trying to learn how to drive" That's one of the smartest things I've heard someone say on any of these one takes. Props to this guy, whether you like the car or not, he's got a great attitude.
Love how humble this guy is - really a good guy from the sound of it. He knows EXACTLY what his car is. He doesn't bump it up like it's some track monster, and most importantly, he's well aware that the car's abilities are likely over his head and the most important aspect is to learn how to drive. A good driver > a good car 9 times out of 10. I'm not into Hyundais, but this guy is awesome and the car looks pretty good. Def. got some F&F going on, haha. People should take notes on this guy.
I like the owner of this thing, he knows it's just a veloster, not being cocky and starting to give us bullshit like it's got a tune ,intake and exhaust and it's making 300 to the wheels blah blah, smoking v8s like no tomorrow. so on. good guy, good luck to him
Haha thanks I'm use to it with this car. It gets as much dislikes at it does likes. But hey my car hasn't broken down yet and I don't plan on it. Trying to do things smart. more power would be nice but that =$$$
Your a good dude Matt! You can relate to beginners or pros, and your cool with everyone between. Your way with people is the deference it what makes these videos entertaining. Thx!!!
I do too. platform is not ground breaking but Hyundai left alot of room to improve. I own one and have modified it a bunch I always have a smile and get a good laugh in it. it's like commuting I'm a quick go cart.
Matt did a great job on a fair assessment of an interesting car. I don't get why people trash other people's cars. Everyone has different levels of interests in cars and what they want from their cars. When there's a passion for driving and owning a car, no matter what, it's good for everyone in the hobby. A wide market base means a strong list of vendors pushing out all the fantastic parts we have available to us, if you want to go fast or not. We're living in a virtual renaissance of automobiles and it is specifically because of the variety and volume of interest. To claim some legitimacy issue on even one part of of that market is a disservice to the entire ecosystem of car enthusiasts. I own an Edsel and I own a 2015 Mustang GT. I get love, hate, and laughs for both, and just because one is fast and the other is a laughing stock (you choose which is which) it does nothing to change the joy I get in going to car meets and meeting other people enjoying cars. Love what you brung and respect that everyone else did to.
Just a stage 1 tune for like 600 bucks and he could be putting down 240 whp and 270+ foot pounds to the ground. In a car that weights 2800 pounds it would be a lot more fun.
+Sergio Martinez i talked to the guy at tork motorsports about their tune and he says they limit the 2013's to 230 wheel and they are plenty happy. Their shop veloster is a 2013. Since I'm going to be building a 1jz sc300 anyways a 2800 pound daily putting 230 to the ground is plenty for me. Especially 270 foot pounds. FUN!
+bstryke15 I've talked to john (tork motorsports) as well. he told me the same thing. but if I'm going to spend money on a tune I rather spend some extra cash on rods and Pistons and really get the most out of the tune.
I learned that early on. the tires rubbing has been such an issue, I've had to cut the fenders to Hell. besides that the lights were never connected, tune was removed. a very restrictive muffler was put on... the list goes on lol
OMG!! I was actually thinking about getting this car since it's going cheap(ish) in the UK due to the stoppage of production. I've already subbed to you guys ages ago and searched for a review but couldn't find one... You have answered my prayers!!!! :D
if I'm not mistaken these cars come with an electronic accelerator pedal, i would look into a gopedal. it would help tune just the feel and reaction of the pedal. My fiat 500 Abarth would hang revs at some points until i installed the gopedal.
This is by FAR the most critical I've ever seen you of someones car. Even more than that girls Subaru. Is it cause of the expectations the paint job gives?
TheSmokingTire - Its a very common problem with stock Veloster Turbos. A tune fixes that and gives you that extra 1k revs you want as well. It also opens up min of 40 extra wheel hp.
It hung? Maybe it's a Hyundai thing? I do know lots of people complain about the hang and my 2016 rspec has a hint of it. But a lot of people fix it with tunes. Maybe it's based on if the tuner has a focus on that or not? No clue... Happy driving though!
+TheSmokingTire I had a 2012 Accent before the FiST which did the exact same thing. It just kind of hangs out when you engage the clutch and goes ehhhhhhhhh okayI'llrevdown.
I upgraded from a VT to a Miata to have a better handling car, and the Miata ended up being much quicker. The VT has to be the slowest 200hp car ever created lol. Love the reviews tho, always entertaining and keep me coming back!
Seems like a nice guy, car looks cool from the outside but possibly feels like jumping in too deep. A cheap Miata would have probably been a better choice to learn for price. I get the impression these SEMA car builds draw a lot of attention, but I'm also thinking that SEMA has a lot a cars that look great, but really suck on the road. Then again, the car seems to have all the right parts on it. Its simply taking it that next step and getting it all working together. I think Matt is right about getting all the stuff you have on the car tuned from suspension to the ECU. As for some advice, you might be able to detune your power steering to make the steering more heavy, it could possibly provide more feel. With the weird rev hanging, I don't think its a tune. It will be something blocked or needs cleaning. A common problem on my car requires that I clean a specific solenoid every year or so or it will cause rev hang and even rev limiting. Its really strange, I recommend diving into the forums and I'm pretty confident you will find the solution.
I think it looks great. I feel it looks more modern rally than it does fast and the furious. I can tell the owner loves it regardless of power output and that's all that matters. Matt was a bit harsh on this one.
I would remove or lighten the extremely dark rear taillights. I would also work with on the engine, tune and suspensions before the expensive paintjob. The rear seats are still in the back with the roll cage. Wouldnt you want to remove everything in the back for weight reduction along with the rest of the rear panels? It's not like anyone can sit there. 0:47
It's a nice car with sensible modifications. I'm not expecting a big number in horse power. The suspension seems to be on point which is way more than what most enthusiast will do. Before I upgraded the engine in my 92" s13 coupe, I upgraded the entire suspension. What I expect to see next is a few more engine mods and a tune.
Oh cool, I read that the tea kettle whistle noise adds at least 50 hp ;^) I can almost guarantee that body kit or the Led light strips on the roof were never wind tunnel tested. That seems to be the source of the whistle. Luckily his exhaust is almost loud enough to cancel out the whistle ;^)
+qikqbn77 At first I thought it was someone driving outside my office with a bad power steering pump or really noisy belt, until I noticed it didn't go away and I realized it was coming from the video lol
This car is designed to be fun out of the box. Its great for commuters and people who want something stylish at low price. Why do people insist on thinking that every car has to be a super handling, fast diva?
I could tell how stiff it is when you took it from the side of the road where the stones were to the tarmac. It was catching every stone, this thing will handle on perfect surface, but on a shitty roads you can fly out of a corner.
The new Hyundai Elantra finally has some OK steering, side by side with the previous model it's amazing. Just a thought to follow the limp velosteraptor steering
Wish I was a bit closer and more time.. I'd love for you to drive my Veloster turbo. 260whp/290wtq and a more forgiving suspension. Plus even more turbo noises.
+Andy onabuzz People don't come all the way from wherever to have me drive their cars and blow smoke up their ass, at least I hope they don't because they are kidding themselves. They come to me because they want the thoughts and suggestion of someone who's been at speed in a thousand cars. He wanted my advice on what to do next, and I gave it to him. Honesty is best.
He should've reviewed a tuned veloster. Looks should always be secondary, but he did buy it from auction with the looks, good for him. Now is the time for the rebuild and get rid of that rev-hang.
Down in South Florida there's a old sema car I've seen for sale a few times. It's a Mazda protege that's been converted into a 2 door Ute and has a turbo and nitrous thrown in for good measure. I think it was less than 12k from memory.
Ya'll need to see that 500hp veloster turbo that was recently rigged up. That thing is a daily driver beast. (not to be confused with the blood type racing one)
Im pretty sure the revs are hanging like that because of the 50/50 bypass he installed (to get the "right noises" as Matt would say). So yes a tune would fix it.
@ 8:15 "right as the turbo starts to really get goin- I reach redline." And the owner says his stock internals are weak right? Seems like he could safely swap a SMALLER turbo in there and get a much wider power band. Addresses both of the afore mentioned issues with negligible reliability offset.
+Sergio Martinez hmm yes, a smaller turbo does = less PEAK power. What I'm saying is that (according to Mr. Farrah) you are peaking very close to redline, or perhaps not all! Based on the limited information, your current configuration could very well have a peak output that is beyond your redline. YIKES! Smaller turbo would peak at a lower rpm and give the engine a WIDER (aka usable) power band. Could you run out of lung capacity before reaching redline with a smaller turbo? Yes possibly, but when your spooling up and staying spooled up across more RPMs, that = more fun! Also your stock internals should appreciate that as well... Of course you could always do as you're suggesting: upgraded internals + stock turbo. If the new internals can handle higher RPMs then that might actually let us see the stock turbo's full potential (what would happen if we took it 1500 revs further? Would the turbo do its best work there?). A slightly smaller turbo + tune seems more cost effective though.
+Future Engineer I would present Matt's beloved Fiesta ST as evidence of the success this type of setup can produce. Early spool up, fat ass power band, more suited to a daily driver. IMHO.
+Future Engineer just seems counter intuitive to go smaller. rather just go stay with stock turbo thanks for your input tho. I do understand what you're saying
Nice Car though for not being fast. I bet if he lightened the car more it would help the acceleration and speed! Also, that Cage is amazing, I can see the stiffness through the video...literally!
I have a non turbo with a ton of suspension mods and sticky tires. The limiting suspension factor is the rear torsion beam. However it's a very capable autocross car but no if you want to race someone it's incredibly slow. Overall I think it's a great car but more power would be nice.
If the owner is reading comments: A proper street tune will actually make your car more reliable and less prone to breaking something. Having Bolt ons on a turbo car without the proper tune for them can seriously cause problems down the road. Just make sure you get it done by a reputable tuner.
Matt, I believe most Hyundais have this throttle issue. I remember you doing a Genesis Coupe review where you also had throttle trouble. I myself have driven an i20 and i40 and you cannot choke them in 1st gear. Fast gear shifts are also problematic, as the throttle pedal somehow does not come back all the way, nor as fast as it should.
+TheSmokingTire Throttle response is much better with the ECU being tuned. Having my Genesis Coupe tuned has made throttle control and response much much better.
+Fellows Automobile Yeah it's a recent Hyundai thing, the i30 has the same thing, also the gearbox has the snappy gears which makes it impossible to just slam it into gear, excellent for city driving but crap for trashing it
+Fellows Automobile my moms hyundai tuscon does the exact same thing too guess its just a hyundai thing. i actually find it annoying driving it like that after im used to my mini cooper
+TheSmokingTire Matt, the OE tunes leave much to be desired for. I own a '11 Genesis Coupe 3.8 Track and aside from basic bolt ons, the custom tune done by SFR was by far and large, the biggest game changer for that car. "Rev hang" problems, especially at WOT and shifting gears is all but gone. Throttle response is much sharper too among other things. ThatDudeInBlue did a review on my car, fall of 2014. The chassis and balance is great for the Gen Coupe, but the OE tune, like you said for this Velo, leaves much on the table.
West-end is way more than 200 bucks for corner balancing and a alignment. They fixed a lot on my car and i ended up paying about 450 for an alignment, corner balancing and about 2hours of labor. That's after them cutting me a deal for the last hour of work. Their minimum i believe was 250 for just a quick corner balance without an alignment, which is useless to do. It would be a waste if you had to come back because of not having all your upgrades sorted.
***** you are probably right, i had them do both but they charged me for another 2 hours because i had them change a lot of adjustable settings. Maybe it was 250 for both.
just got a rally edition veloster ....and that hang you guys talking about could be that clutch switch that hyundai installed. its right above the clutch pedal. its a white clip. unclip it and that hang will go away.
I wanted to hate this car so bad, but I can't due to the owner. The car may not be my cup of tea; however, he's realistic about it and wants to improve his driving. I can more than respect that. Happy motoring sir!
Wonder if he'll follow Matts advice about the tune and suspension. A downpipe without a tune? Yikes. Would be nice to see a follow up on this car if he does do those mods.
I gotta give Hyundai props for at least their attempts at making sports cars. So far they've all been misses, but at least they're making a good try at it. At least Hyundai's seem to have come a LONG way in terms of quality in the last couple years.
+TheSmokingTire, would you have an opportunity to review a built up veloster turbo? There are a couple pretty heavily tuned ones around LA now. I'm just starting on power on mine but initial tune gained 30hp and 50ftlbs from stock 193whp/207ftlbs (13-15 typically dyno 10-15whp less). Once I have the LSD installed I'll look into adding some rods+pistons. I've never had the rev hang issue present in this video.
"I'm trying to learn how to drive."
Its nice to see a guy who doesn't think hes the best driver ever.
"I'm not looking to add too much power, I'm trying to learn how to drive" That's one of the smartest things I've heard someone say on any of these one takes. Props to this guy, whether you like the car or not, he's got a great attitude.
From the outside it looks like it has 500+ hp and that's what matters the most.
Lol
Ahhhhhhahaha
lmfao I like that one
+Shadow Hamster BECAUSE RACECAR
+SupremacyGaming Because RICECAR
The fact it has all of those exterior mods and just an intake and an exhaust is a bit sad.
Welcome to SEMA show cars. ;)
+Troggie42 "Bro, so long as I leave the hood down they are sure to think it's got sick mods"
+NeverSurrender exactly
I was expecting something around 400 wheel.
+NeverSurrender all show and no go as they say...

Some of these guys just get excited so they just go on and on about their cars. I mean what car guy doesn't like talking about their cars?
Haha thanks I'm use to it with this car. It gets as much dislikes at it does likes. But hey my car hasn't broken down yet and I don't plan on it. Trying to do things smart. more power would be nice but that =$$$
+Sergio Martinez You have a great attitude. Keep doing you. Good luck!
+Sergio Martinez You have a great attitude. Keep doing you. Good luck!
The light bar whistle is gnarly.
this guy is smart the 13's are so prone to problems. later models fixed the steering and also new internals.
"I hate to break it to you Sergio, but you wasted a heap of green on your heap of green......"
What synonym for $ rhymes with chartreuse?
everyone watching is apperently making tea. the tea kettle is going off. lol
I legit just made some haha
+Saichisubbie808 I'm drinking some Bonja green tea ironically enough
+Saichisubbie808 Literally muted to find out what it was..
I was thinking, did I make tea and don't remember?
RUclipsr I like the subbie too
Bro....you need a tune bro.......a tune is best bro.
+Terry Dolan
dude
+Terry Dolan bro
Track day bro, gonna go to track day bro, Hoosiers super toyo bro
+Terry Dolan YEAH BRO
Gotta confuse the ECU, right bro?
If you can't decide between a 2-door or a 4-door, get a 3-door!
I thought my mom was making tea this WHOLE time._.
dang Matt back off he knows it's not a power house, haha.
It sounds like a belt was squealing the whole time
Wind noise not engine noise
+uNkLeRaRa4 ya I kept thinking the kettle was done! damn it I NEEDS MI TEAS!
I think it's those light bars above the windshield
No one of his mods is a tea maker in the back
+JWJ lol
Let me just point out the scenery....dang it looks beautiful!!
Your a good dude Matt!
You can relate to beginners or pros, and your cool with everyone between.
Your way with people is the deference it what makes these videos entertaining.
Thx!!!
At 2:41 when Matt says "here we go" and the awkward silence after was hilarious
I hope he gets it sorted, dialed in, and comes back.
+ptriq Yeah this car has so much potential i know this car could be amazing
I do too. platform is not ground breaking but Hyundai left alot of room to improve. I own one and have modified it a bunch I always have a smile and get a good laugh in it. it's like commuting I'm a quick go cart.
Who left the kettle on the stove?
I deadass had to pause the video and look in the kitchen to finally realize that it was the video lol
dude! i love how you did the different views on the car mainly the engine bay this time. keep showing us the engine bays
How great is this car it comes with a kettle for you to refill your coffee with how slow it is
lmaooo
goes faster than a Toyota 86 though

I learned that early on. the tires rubbing has been such an issue, I've had to cut the fenders to Hell. besides that the lights were never connected, tune was removed. a very restrictive muffler was put on... the list goes on lol
Sergio Martinez how is that car now?
Forget the rods and pistons just get a tune and up the boost by 4-5lbs man.
matt..I love that you answer comments no matter how stupid they may be

my buddy has a sick abarth. love the exhaust on that car
This is by FAR the most critical I've ever seen you of someones car. Even more than that girls Subaru. Is it cause of the expectations the paint job gives?
had no idea you could buy sema cars! Now to go find if they ever sold the SEMA Miata Speedster! I would 100% buy that!
They aren't bad cars, put some stiffer springs on it, get a proper tune and they're pretty fun and handle well.
absolutely. don't underestimate this car
I mess with one of these every day on my way to work. Some nice morning entertainment.
Sergio seems like an extremely humble dude. Hope you got that tune and the suspension all set up.
TheSmokingTire - Its a very common problem with stock Veloster Turbos. A tune fixes that and gives you that extra 1k revs you want as well. It also opens up min of 40 extra wheel hp.

A great setup! The Veloster definitely provides a lot of value.
Are the Takata stickers a sponsor or a caution?
The revs hanging is for emission compliance. The Genesis Coupe has the similar mapping.
i have a 2013 veloster turbo with only upgraded intake and intercooler and i did a 1:43 at streets of willow. it was my first time racing it
Lol, everyone bashing this car is still probably driving their moms. Plus you're supposed to be car people, you're all toxic to the scene.
I think he shouldn’t have done exhaust work. We’re not bashing this car 😂. It’s the cold hearted truth. I have my own car BTW
For a turbo i expected it to be a little faster, even stock. When a car looks like this, it could use a good engine-tune :)
I upgraded from a VT to a Miata to have a better handling car, and the Miata ended up being much quicker. The VT has to be the slowest 200hp car ever created lol. Love the reviews tho, always entertaining and keep me coming back!
Good-guy Sergio. Great review, Matt!
The idle hanging thing is either your map sensor or IAC sensor.. My srt4 did the same thing for years.
Never had the throttle hang. Unhooking the gear indicator made a difference with the throttle. Almost feels like a cable now.
That exhaust is sick af.

It's super model seating only.... I fail to see the problem.
+Finkin79 What is a super model seating?
Supermodel. Sorry, I added a space in my original comment.
He just talked straight shit to this guy the whole time. damn.
I met Sergio at a track day about a month ago and got to ride in it, for it only having 200 horsepower, it felt like I was in a rally car
That Hyundai smell is going to be on you for a week Matt.
Some guys like the skank-stank, Matt may well be one of them........
Haha

oh god this just gave veloster's a worst name then they already have because they're a hyundai... still gotta love my veloster tho !
Hey Matt, you drove my car which appeared at SEMA 2 weeks later :). Not too much changed, just wheels and trunk.
0:56 why are the rear seats even still in the car if they can never be used......

This was happening before the exhaust was installed.
For the hanging revs, have him look into replacing the clutch switch.
I need to see how the light bars where mounted and how it was run through the car!
My 2015 Colorado has the issue with hanging ignition speed as well. It seems to be mostly while warming up though...
@ 8:15 "right as the turbo starts to really get goin- I reach redline."

He defiantly should have tuned it before this! looks sick still. I did some things to my Veloster recently too everyone should check it out
Car was sold by Monza Car in Sherman Oaks. Used to see it every day on my way too and from work.
+Fellows Automobile I just did a different Gen Coupe video and it had the exact same issue.
That whistling made me think my tea was ready.
+Themayseffect for me it was just $250 for corner balancing and alignment without any special deal. They do great work and I love going there.
*****
you are probably right, i had them do both but they charged me for another 2 hours because i had them change a lot of adjustable settings. Maybe it was 250 for both.
just got a rally edition veloster ....and that hang you guys talking about could be that clutch switch that hyundai installed. its right above the clutch pedal. its a white clip. unclip it and that hang will go away.
lol Matt Ferrah be throwing low-key shots all through the video. haha funny shit!
downpipe without a tune.... You are not gonna have a good time
+Steve Matchett damn thing must be leaning out like crazy
😂😂
+Dario Kruv plenty of people run DP with no tune on V's it's the most restrictive part of the car
+aaronjakositz That's exactly the reason you need a tune.
+Zcypot a tune won't fix a air flow blockage
YES!!!!!! MORE HYUNDAI!! CANT WAIT TO BRING MY CAR UP TO YOU.
I wanted to hate this car so bad, but I can't due to the owner. The car may not be my cup of tea; however, he's realistic about it and wants to improve his driving. I can more than respect that. Happy motoring sir!
Hey thanks man. yes getting better at driving is my goal. track days cost money! rather have seat time at the track than an engine build (for now =))
Wonder if he'll follow Matts advice about the tune and suspension. A downpipe without a tune? Yikes. Would be nice to see a follow up on this car if he does do those mods.
A tune won't fix the rpm holding. Most of Hyundai's cars do that to assist rev matching into the next gear and smoother take up. Even new i30's do it.
ran Streets of Willow with this guy!
I loled when he hit the bump and was like 'ooo man this is stiff'
That RattleCo exhaust was killing me, that and the whistling noise, other than that, nice car.
I started laughing to death when I heard him say Well it's still not fast LOL😂😂😂
I don't know if its the car or Matt's audio, but I though my tea kettle was boiling halfway through this video.
+trolintime the whistling is coming from the roof-mounted light bar. same thing if you have a bike rack or something on the roof.
Buys SEMA show car, gets told it's a good learner. SAVAGE
I was a test driver for Hyundai for two years, and the Veloster turbo was not bad... not great... my 2003 Matrix would walk it, but it was not bad.
I hope he got this for a good price. It's a great learners car
