FOMO is 100% on purpose, that's how GW behaves.
Course it's done on purpose.
They'll get you into a mindset to want the battleforce box. Then when you don't get one you'll end up wanting whatever was in the box and buy it seperatly eventhough you wouldn't have bought it if it hadn't been in the box. Or at least that seems the reasoning.
3d printer goes brrrrrrrrt
Between Price Increases, GW lacking on supplying the FLGS, and many other things... I have pretty much given up on the hobby. And have seen lots of people in my area that have stopped playing due to this same thing.
why stop playing?
you still have the rules and the minis, you can just keep playing. heck, you can even buy new minis off of etsy
In my country stores struggle to order stuff from GW . Combined that with items only sold by GW , playing the game has become real hard .
I was ready to buy both Chaos Battleforces. These were the first boxed sets I was going to buy new in YEARS. I think the last new kit I bought for myself was back in around 2015.
I had the boxed sets in my cart ready to pay from an online seller when they sold out and were removed due to having too few allocated.
I am not buying anything new from GW as a result of that experience. I chose to buy alternative models off the second-hand market instead (eBay).
GW absolutely lost money I would have spent and now am not spending because they under produced a desirable product.
same way here, but i'm new to the hobby. so this shit gives off a sour taste from the get go.
If manufacturing takes too long put preorders out early and have stores order earlier so you have more time to manufacture
They still have the molds they could reprint them if they wanted to but they won't
I'm a newcomer to GW and Kill Team specifically and already thinking about abandoning it. Can't buy the starter set half the time, can't buy scenery, can't even buy new launches (Nightmare). It makes GW look utterly incompetent
I 3d print as well and have used it for Kill Team terrain equivalents. Not scanned and copied, just similar layouts. I use it for non-GW games (OPR, TTRPGs) mainly
This is one of the dumbest business plans ever. Leaving the money to be made on the aftermarket like eBay and stuff. Let's not print enough to make extra profit we only need to make enough to clear costs and pay our employees....
I spent a lot of money on new guitar effects units instead of on 2 different Kill Team boxes because GW couldn't supply to me and many other potential customers. I've also sourced a lot of 40k themed parts on ebay from printers who aren't GW because GW doesn't make those parts or if they do, they want to massively over-charge the customer.
Fomo persists through different products. When the emperor's children codex and box drops, I know it's limited and will buy my copy asap.
Purposeful fomo means I refuse to buy. I hate being manipulated and was going to buy 2 of the battleforces but they sold out and I'm not paying a scalper for these
Meh. I recognize that it's a balancing act, and GW (and local stores) doesn't want to over-produce and have those battle forces sit on shelves either. I've seen the reverse happen as well--there are still some of the Chapter-specific Space Marine Battle Forces sitting on shelves in my local stores.
For what it's worth, and I have no way to validate any of this...but my local GW store said what they consider NEW customer traffic is down at least 70%. (They quantify a NEW customer as someone that has not purchased or been in the store during the prior 3 months, so essentially a quarter). The last 3 times i've been in the store, which has been since Christmas of 2023, inventory within the store is down by half. That includes paints, codex's, named models, etc. As far as your question goes about where I'm spending my money, literally 100% of my model related budget has been moved to console gaming (not GW either)... I haven't purchased a GW model, or utility since buying a Astra Militarum Command Squad in November of 2023. It pains me to say it, but "out of sight, out of mind"... you begin to focus on other things, GW may not get a significant number of consumers back simply because they've moved on to something else.
How did the quality of your video and audio drop so much?
So funny part I haven't spent any of my money on GW products in like 5-8+ years now. I invested in GW with old models and resold them when they went out of print and make triple on my investments. But I see where your getting at on how GW does business. I think they'll be up a creek soon. A lot of people I know who 3D print, print whole armies or at least bits for their squads upgrades. Instead of buying multiple boxes of the same unit to get the full upgrades. Even bigger now I've seen an increase in people dedicate to 3D scanning old or hard to find GW models and their quality is the same as the OG model.
Im hoping to get a copy of necromunda
Battleforces are the perfect things to sit on shelves, though. They offer a great start to an army usually, so a slight overproduction wouldn't hurt anyone.
GW doesn't want to give clients a great start for an army tho, hence why they nerf starting boxes each year just like the combat patrols
But its funny, i can still find leviathan boxes. I can remember stores having too much of the aos third edition boxes for a year plus after its launch. (STILL can get those now that i think about it). But hey, keeping up with demand on other releases is hard! 😂
They pushed AoS and convinced the stores to overstock them when nobody wanted it and leviathan is the gateway drug into 40k.
Between price hikes and this new FOMO behavior I threw in the towel buying new GW products like three years ago. Had a huge painting back log anyway. As I finished that back log I just don’t want to get back on that treadmill. I feel like a recovered addict.
Gw doesnt even really understand fomo. Most companies will produce something for a small period, and as much as they need. Good example is seasonal clothing lines. A once its gone its gone mentality.
GW just underproduces consistently at a huge loss, even to them. Like at a certain point this really just fucks their sales
I just want a Green Knight.
It only makes sense if they are profiting off the secondary market ie scalping it themselves
Their sales have more than doubled in the last 4 years. They've not doubled their manufacturing in that time frame.
It's the easiest math in the world, the demand exceeds what they are able to supply and their reluctant to spend the money on New manufacturing if this is a fluke or a short term sales bump.
Well I was thinking of getting into Warhammer and LotR miniatures... but seeing this here I probably stick with Warlord Games.
if its not sold out in two weeks "thats not popular"... heres the problem. when they overproduce single units other units get underproduced, to make twice the number of chaos boxes they have to not make anything for tau for an extra few months..
I really do think creating a US (or Mexico) and Asia eventually production warehouse should be the right call. UK should be able to supply Europe and maybe help other regions if needed. but covering the US needs will alleviate the supply issue to the rest of the world aswell. I think the cost going up also is cause they don't have enough supply to meet demand, and the can't create more supply, so the only way to grow is to increase price. until they build more manufacturing facilities it's the only way for it to grow, and as a public company they have a duty to their investors to keep growing.
Bro they can create more supply they have the molds still they just don't want to because they want to put out other shiny new things instead but yes they need another production facility cause clearly they can't stockpile enough for release with their release schedule as it is currently
GW wants to kill flgs which is why they short print everything IMO that way they can just sell them on their website instead of to the stores because they make more from direct sales. There have been at least 4 boxes in the last year I would have got if they had been readily available but because I knew I was gonna have to sit on the GW website to get it and deal with their crappy website on presale day i just passed on them because of it
11:40, as a new player/hobbyist who chose CSM as his army who really wanted 1 box.... this has not got me to quit the hobby, but it did make me look into 3D printing instead. as a matter of fact, i just bought recasts instead.
there is no need to be hyped for a GW release because; you are either not going to get it due to low stock or it's going to be incredibly overpriced
They are “protecting” their high prices by forced scarcity. They want to make just under demand. They’d rather have a healthy “scalpers” market rather than produce just enough or even worse, more than demand. The latter leads to discounting / clearance to clear product in the field. Dominion anyone? Having to slash prices over time hurts their ability to charge a premium. They are shooting for “quality” over “quantity”, quality being the high profit margin on their goods in this case. Look at automobiles. Same thing happens. Some rely on heavy incentives and volume where others rely on small incentives but command a higher price. In the end, the latter is the more viable model long term. Sucks for price conscious consumers though.
Honestly: I have quit 40k completely because I am just tired of this release strategy. I still play MESBG, but mostly buy second hand (and from LGS whenever GW releases something interesting). I have like 6 40k armies collecting dust since ~9th edition and will probably just sell them eventually.
Approximately $60 USD for five Attilan Rough Riders blows my mind. I went ahead and bought two boxes for a total of 10. As I plan to go full Rohirrim one day, but also care about my wallet, and furthermore, don't feel compelled to let GW tell me how to have fun with my overpriced plastic (e.g. I homebrew rules), alternative routes are sought. The Guard have Death Rider Squadrons, so in addition to 30 Rough Riders, I can take 30 Death Riders + 3 Death Rider Squadron Commanders. As of the last time I scoured eBay, I wouldn't have been able to acquire either of these models for some reasonable price; I believe someone was selling 10 for like $900. GTF outta here, dude.
I want to support GW, but I don't empathize with their pricing. 3D printing certainly altered market dynamics. I'm wondering if they could embrace it and employ protection measures. For example, license the files with serial numbers to authorized sellers--it is assumed that these sellers would also have a 3D printer. The file could be matched to the printer with a license key, and it would only work with that printer. This is only a thought, however. I understand pirates have their ways, and cyber security is an ever-changing landscape. So, it's just a thought.
I've been in this hobby for 30 years I love Games Workshop IP. However their business practices are very anti-consumer. Almost like they think they're too big to fail and they might be. I rarely buy models from them anymore I buy 3D printed models off of Etsy and play mini agnostic games. In the long run I think their business practices will put a stake in the heart of their business.
Due to these kinds of practices, I'm torn on Skaventide. I kind of want it, but find it hard to justify spending much more money with GW. I find other games (like Warmachine or Conquest) are much better when it comes to dealing with customers. Time will tell with Steamforge buying the Iron Kingdoms IP, but I am finding it harder and harder to justify Warhammer/AOS especially since they release new versions way too often.
I was originally cautiously optimistic about Warmachine after the ip purchase... but after seeing the pre-order prices I'm feeling I'll pass.
My FLGS, which carries nearly all non-online only GW boxes, got 0 of the chaos battleforces allocated. They had 9 ork boxes that sold within the hour.
If selling out once or twice, it can be a miscalculation. By now though, it definately feels like a on purpouse 'tactic'.
Love warhammer, the miniatures, and the lore. Really dislike the business practices from GW.
So for that price I buy a 3d printer and a bottle of resin. Guess I'll print and learn a potential trade skikk running this machine.
That's exactly what I did. It wasn't that I couldn't afford it, it was that it's exhausting to chase after every Box.
By the way, once you've seen what can be printed from a Bottle of Resin, you can only laugh at the GW's desired Prices.
I moved on to Conquest hard, I have 3 armies 2 built and one being built. So tired of G dubs😊
If GW can make more money selling other IP's that are not tabletop they will drop the miniatures section like a hot potato. That's where this is headed, that's why I quit playing in 2009 when Rick Priestly resigned due GW going corporate rather than innovation route. The writings been on the wall for 15 years; it is what it is, no one the community cares about is going to buyout GW to bring it back. #RIPGW
Selling out of anything means leaving money on the table. If a product sells out that means demand is higher than production and more people want the product than were made.
Not printing enough mini's might be a super conservative move; by selling out they guarantee a certain amount of income and expenses. With a near guarantee to sell all products they minimize the risk of having box sets sitting in their warehouses. There's a balancing act between making enough to meet demand but not so much they incur expenses that erode previous income. The tin foil hat in me says they are price gouging; keep supply low and demand high to maintain high prices and such.
You know what never sells out? Resin.
I think part of this is they don’t want to overshoot the production numbers. If they hang too much unsold product on distributors and stores they will order less and sour their partners. This is what happened to Magic the gathering in the last 2 years.
GW making bad business tactics? Gee who would have known lol.
I don’t understand why people still give them money we really don’t need them
I think they had a series of bad releases during and following the post pandemic market retraction, and so GW is experiencing a lot of FUD internally. Their behavior is very risk averse right now.
I think this is right on the money. Yeah, putting out low print numbers could drive FOMO, but it also means that they're not having to invest as much in their production. And with as many people being down on these big boxes, and especially so after the last price hike, I could easily see GW C-suite guys being gun shy about producing more boxes than they have been. And that doesn't even talk about the people that are giving up on GW plastic and just going the 3d printing route.
FOMO is not an argument in this case, because there simply isn't a reason for it.
FOMO only works if there is plenty of stock, like in digital products that rotate out.
How would i get FOMO for a physical product, that is so low in stock that even trying to get one is impossible?
You do not understand FOMO, at all.

Please explain.
If the lifetime of their models is going to be that short, then why buy them if they're invalid before you get to assemble, paint and play them?
Dar-ko-ath? Its Dark-oath. Wth is wrong with you?
I watch with amusement from the sidelines - no bought GW for 18 months and got past my addiction.I used to be a whale with their boxed sets, but quit in frustration when I couldn't get the Kill Team Gallowfall boxes 2, 3, and 4.
Put my head up for fresh air and opened my eyes.
I now play other games and am having more fun for a lot less money than used to go from me to GW.
Hey GW. Your FOMO sh1t no longer works on me.
If you had just kept enough stock I'd probably still be with you. My new entertainment now is watching you stuff up.
