    I've got the C200 Estate from April/19.
Dear Autogefuhl in your test do not mention the combination between the smooth 9G gearbox, the collision prevention, the engine saling mode and the cruise control. In combination with the Eco-mode, the car activates the right gear to economize gasoline and keep response. Sailing mode from 50 km/h to >130 km/h in Eco-mode uses Electric engine to stop completelly the petrol engine. This intelligent system is very quick to react when you released the pedal based on the slope and the environment using the front camera. The engine is stopped to 0 rpm, if no vehicles slowing down in the front, inertial acceleration is not too big and enough battery level. If there is not enough battery then sailing mode goes on with engine at neutral (600 or 700 rpm). I like this sailing mode engineering very much because is very predictable and keeps the car driving safe. If it appears any slower vehicle in the front then the engine is started to retain the car. The start/stop of the engine is very smooth and very frequent in Eco-mode, only possible with a dedicated 48V battery. You can notice that engine is stopped in the display by 0 revs or the D "drive" in green without a gearbox number.
An important remark, the engine start/stop in sailing mode is not active when using the cruise control. I find will be great to be also effective using the cruise control in someway. An alternative is to cancel cruise control during downhills and inmediatelly the engine is stopped. Cruise control enables driving relaxing the legs and feet which is the most tiring for long trips. In this Mercedes it is very easy to speed up and down with the excellent steering wheel controls.
About the rear and lateral collision prevention assist sometimes is activated abruplly by a person moving around the car at slow speed. It is a bit alarming for passengers because it really stops the car abruply but sure that no damage is caused to anybody. Also very confident to blind angle alert signal in the mirrors, it is very useful.
Related to economy of fuel, MHEV solution I agree with you that is not a game changer but enables the driver to relax and drive more smoothly. NEDC medium consumption of 6 liters/100km is possible?. An example of a real trip 1400 kms at an average speed of 112 km/h with full car and a full roof box: 8,0 liters/100km. Not so bad.

...at 19:42 what was that on the instruments?! Love the philosophical discussion of spring travel with air suspension - typical excellent Thomas commentary! That rear seat space is poor for the price and length - if you have two tall teenage children with long legs - no way! No wonder some punters choose an SUV! Excellent Review, and superb driving part as always - Many Thanks Thomas.

    • @johncollymore1697
      @johncollymore1697 5 лет назад +4

Ah yes. Actually I suspected that, and thought that was a steering wheel symbol. And yes, I always notice you operate the steering wheel in a very nice linear and smooth fashion, never "sawing at the wheel" as they say in 'performance-driving' circles! (Sawing at the wheel makes passengers very sick very quickly!). It's a good sign to see a driver keeping the steering wheel completely still. It's interesting that you can confuse the steering sensor - good stuff! I haven't tried it on our car because I have Lane Assist switched off - must try it! Many thanks.

I think the MHEV is an interesting technology because it further simplifies the electric circuit of the car, since all electric and electronic functions are managed through the small auxiliary electric motor! And there's only a slightly bigger battery needed! But I thought the C200 engine is a 2-litre! But, apparently, the 16hp of the electric motor is added up to the 184hp of the internal combustion engine to perform as much as a normal 2-litre engine!
    Good review, mr 6ft 1in!

There are two designs for the steering; the Avantgarde and Exclusive - has a round steering wheel with trapezoidal spokes finished with gloss black inserts and the AMG Line - has a flat-bottomed steering wheel with sportier grips at 9 and 3 o'clock positions and pentagon spokes with an aluminium finished.
I prefer the basic steering wheel design which looks more refined and represents 'luxury'.

Just got the C200d Estate, 1.6L, 160hp. Very refined engine, quick as well. Coming from a BMW 3 series 318d, the c200d feels a lot more powerful, esp in higher revs. I just need to get used to a different seating position, I'm always struggling with my elbow hitting the center console. Seat at the lowest position, higher feels too disconnected. Otherwise very happy with the car and the new engine.

The air suspension is what attracted me to this car. I was a fan of french cars because of their smooth drive, but today they seem only like bad copies of German cars with stiff suspension. When turning into a Comfort mode, can I expect really smooth drive like cars used to drive in the past? Is it significantly better than DCC system using by VW? In this review Thomas sometimes used the Comfort mode, but it seems that the car is still stiff too much and driving over rough roads is annoyingly audible in the cabin.

Thomas, thank you for your thorough reviews. I enjoy this variant of the C Klasse. The interior is of high quality, and the hood ornament brings back memories of the W123. Sadly, the Estate is not offered here in the USA. If MBUSA would offer it as an order only, German delivery, I believe it would sell very well. The cachet (and savings) of European delivery and exclusivity of this body style could be a good marketing strategy. MBUSA are you listening? Again thank you Thomas, keep up the good work.

Mercedes has done a good giving the C-Class a mild facelift which includes a revamped exterior and interior with vivid tech and updates to the engine line-up.
In my opinion, the C-Class Estate looks better than the Saloon. The Saloon has bulbous rear end with round rear lights which does not appeal to me, on the other hand, the Estate has rear lights that extends into the boot which looks to me classier.
The C-Class Estate may look classier on the outside and vivid on the inside but what puts me off is the annoying fake exhaust tips and the C200 with a 1.5-litre petrol engine needs to be worked so hard to get the best out of it.

So the Mercedes MHEV drivetrain is far inferior to Toyota's tech when looking at real-world consumption?
Quite a shame. Toyota has proven in the past 20 years how much potential there is in this area.

Good thing they're finally moving away from that overly cartoony led-filled cockpit and uniscreen

I am not sure if this is sarcasm or not, but they are not 'moving away' they didn't implement it in C class, yet.

Clever advertising to call it MHEV but this thing is terribly outdated. Both in terms of interior(old style) and the mild hybrid is just a gimmick compared to a true EV, plugin or Hyrbid. Would be mad to buy this.

Mercedes doesn´t call it a MHEV. It´s simply called the C200

Nothing outdated about this car, the S-Class featured the twin-screeens before this C-Class was released, and electric cars are as old as internal combustion cars. Try again. This isn't an Apple marketing gimmick for clueless millennials.

Calling Mild hybrids MHEVs is an insult to EVs. They don’t deserve an acronym.

Such a boring interior now compared to the new 3 series

This is face lift not a new car like 3-series so poor choice of reference. BMW sucks big time, all cars looking the same inside.
