My first guess is the vapor canister- user error. If you keep clicking the gas pump to fill up the tank after the first stop, you can fill the vapor canister with gas, which will squirt raw gasoline into the fuel system instead of gas vapor, and cause a way too rich fuel/air mixture. When the canister gets emptied, the car runs normally again.

On the evap line to the fuel tank, there should be a float that will close it off if the level gets high enough. They aren't reliable. Just don't overfill people.

Super common on the 2017-2019 highlander 2GR-FKS. Awesome job on the accurate diagnosis and explanation David. Sometimes with this you get a direct injection performance code which can send some mechanics on a loop.

I was suspicious of the evap system. Some people love to top off their gas tank and what they don't know is how much damage that can end up doing. Some evap system repairs can cost a small fortune.

Yes, resist that urge. These days there is no excuse. We are paying with cards, not cash. You don't have to round off the price to an integer. When the pump shuts off, allow a few seconds for the residual fuel to drain out the nozzle, replace the nozzle on the pump, and tighten the fuel cap. You are finished.

Wizard, I finally listened to you and bought my son a Toyota. And I’m going to put your theory to the test……… I bought a 1990 Camry LE 4 dr sedan with one original owner who was I believe a mechanical engineer. For 30+ years this man was meticulous about the care he bestowed on the car! He kept a notebook of every single service record since 1990 until 2021 when he became too old to drive. I never saw so many invoices for oil changes and safety inspections in my life. And except for this past year when his sons began to take care of the car did I see where they had to replace the alternator and the battery, there was seriously little else that needed to be repaired during it’s lifetime except for brakes, tires and a muffler and a windshield. The only thing I would fault with this Camry is two patches of rust in back of both front wheels. And these are pretty good size holes that my son and I will have to address. But underneath the car is completely dry and no rust on the frame.
Well Wizard, was this too risky of a purchase? Or do you think I checked all the boxes necessary to make a well thought out purchase? Oh and BTW, the sons were asking $3500 which I thought was way too high, so I offered $2500 which I thought was still too high but the paint still looks great, the tires have good tread but are on the “oldish” side, but they took $2500 and were very happy.
My son has been driving it for several months now, oh, I forgot, it had 153K on the clock when we bought it.
So thank you for your advice Wiz.

Hi Cindy, fellow Car Wizard subscriber loyal watcher here. 😊 Thank you for sharing the details on your purchase on the 1990 Toyota Camry purchase for your son. My answer is yes, I believe $2,500 is a great price for a car of this description. I live in San Diego, CA and I would be hard pressed to find a good Camry for under $5,000. I’m a big believer in the older cars being much better built, and this being a Toyota that was well maintained, I’d say you struck gold on this one. 153k miles is really low mileage for the age. I have a 2001 Mercedes ML 430 with over 252k miles on the odometer, and it’s still running strong. It needs a repaint since it’s been outside all these years, but mechanically, it’s good. But back to your car, I love those old Camrys. I remember seeing that generation a lot back in the day, but now they are getting very hard to find. And yeah, that rust can be fixed. You’re lucky the rust wasn’t anywhere else. That’s great news! Now I’ve saved the best for last here for you. I also have a Toyota but you’ll never guess what it is. 😉 It is a 1969 Corona sedan with a 2 speed automatic transmission. Pretty cool and funky car. 😆 So by comparison, your 1990 Camry is still a baby! 🤣
So glad you’re on here watching Car Wizard’s channel! Hope I’ve been helpful for you and best of luck with keeping your 1990 Toyota Camry alive and running for many more years!! 😊

If underneath is good, and you got ALL the service records and all, $2500 is honestly a steal even though it's a 1990 Toyota. The mileage isn't bad whatsoever and knowing about every service is so valuable, you can keep it running pretty much forever so long as the underside stays intact and rust free

In this video you also touched on the lovely Alfa 75. That vehicle is fitted with a 15-pin plastic connector behind the dash that tends to suffer a slow death due to an undersize pin connector that overheats the plastic body of the connector. It's due to the larger diameter earth (black) wire that draws a lot of current and thus continually overheats - which increases its resistance over time - and then begins to compromise the other adjacent pins/wires within the plastic connector. In the video where you featured the Alfa 75, you stated that you ran separate earth wire to the blower motor which indicates the Alfa 75 has the aforesaid issue. I have viewed many Alfa 75s, and in 19 out of 20 cases all possessed the same overheated (melted) 15-pin plastic connector - all due to the earth wire that draws to much current for the size of the connector pin. In order to address the issue, I replaced the 15-pin plastic connector - it took some looking in wrecking yards (car junk yards US) to find one in decent condition (in only modestly melted form) - and used a seperate (single) large spade connector for the black larger diameter earth wire.

My 2002 Lexus ES300 may be boring to some but not to me. Yes it has 16 in rims and cushy sidewalls which absorb the bumps and potholes with ease. The quality of materials and craftsmanship is unparalleled. Everything still works like new. The 4th gen ES (02-06) were the best built ES’s. Best is it was a one owner that I bought two years ago w 160k miles, all maintenance done at a Lexus dealership including timing belt, water pump and valve cover gasket replacement at 88k miles. I did have to replace some 20-year-old original OEM parts (starter, alternator, calipers) since then but now with 179K miles it will last me 10+ years and I don’t plan on selling it.

Funny thing is older subarus (between 92-200X) will have issues with these too. It wont run rough and not start, but what it will do is keep you from pumping gas into the tank... 10-20 cents at a time. 45 mins fuel ups that you only get half a tank before you give up. It can also back up into the charcoal box and actually start to seep out..

Except for the typical lousy OEM tires that only lasted about 35,000 miles, normal oil and filter changes, the only other items we've spent money on are wiper blades, cabin air filters and air filters. It throws up all the warning lights, and I think I learned on this channel, that that is a sign that there is something wrong with the emissions system. Code said something about canister purge valve. On the RAV4 it's hard to get just the valve so I got the whole canister assembly, jacked up one side of the car and the replacement was pretty easy. All fixed. Hopefully it'll go another 150,000 miles.

Dear Mr Car Wizard, love your videos and the new intro. You give me great advice on fixing my 25 year old Mx5. At the end of your video you should touch the car with a magic wizard wand signalling another fixed car🚗

My 2017 Highlander (I4) backfired 2 days ago on the wife in the morning when she started it. Cloud of white smoke. She said it was difficult to start and then got the bang, white smoke. Shut down and had it towed to dealer. They did not see any codes or nothing in history for misfire. Odd. Replaced the plugs, cleaned throttle body, fuel injectors, (don't think they pulled them) and no other problem. But why nothing showed up on the history when they scanned it? Great show, like the cut to the chase videos.

With newer cars, that's not really a big deal. It might not be ideal, but the computer will compensate for it.

Ahhh I wish you would go over that Jeep pickup. You don't see hardly any of those anymore that aren't totally rotted away. I'd love to see you go over it even though there isn't anything majorly wrong with it. If nothing else those old AMCs are interesting due to being a mishmash of parts from a lot of different companies.

This is good info, since we just got a 2019 (after our 2018 got totaled by an 18-wheeler). Quick note about the possible fuel pump: alot of these gen 3 highlanders actually have a recall for the fuel pump. Found that out from a vin search on our 2018. We never had it fail and we had it from 32k miles to 86k, so idk if it was done before then or just never failed, but still possible

Do not top of the gas tank after the pump handle shuts off.
I read that it can cause this solenoid valve to fail and create the problems you described here.
This happened to my 2008 Hyundai Santa fe.
Autozone had the replacement OEM part and problem was solved. The location of the valve is between the firewall and the engine and is a major pain to replace without specal tools.

My Ridgeline (1st gen) hates KwikShop gas. It's just consistently sluggish on their gas. I do QT as often as I can, Phillips 66 2nd. People say gas is gas, but this I think is proof yes it is different. At least here.

    • @mplslawnguy3389
      @mplslawnguy3389 9 месяцев назад +1

It may not even be the gas itself, it may be their storage systems. It's generally best to go to larger chains and newer stations. Another thing to consider is the topography of the station itself. If the tanks are in a spot where drainage isn't great, that's an issue.

Having ran many makes of cars over the years and spent a fortune on repairs that didn't always solve the issues
i decided i wanted reliability and not a car that would make the neighbours jealous..
So i worked my way up from a Toyota Corrola and now have a Lexus and fingers crossed other than wear and tear
items they have never let me down unlike the not so great cars from Germany or worse still Italy that spent more
time at the dealers than on my drive.

I never keep a new car for longer than 3 years and as a result have had many makes and models. I purchased a new 2016 Limited Platinum Highlander and kept it 3 years only to trade it in on a 2019 Limited Platinum Highlander Hybrid in that pearl white with saddle color interior. I've had it four years now which is the longest I've owned a car. They Highlanders handle well, are comfortable and the most important thing is other than routine maintenance and tires, I've never ever had a problem or repair on either of them.
