- Hello everyone! We are back after finishing our short film - have you seen it yet??
A couple weeks ago someone asked for a tutorial on how we added shadows and highlights to our 2D animated characters, so Guro decided to make a tutorial about it. In this video she uses After Effects with no plug-ins.

Did you ever tried tracking these shadows ? I'm also doing research to achieve lightning process like KLAUS movie. I have used mocha track, planar track to achieve it but failed, so now I have idea to render different parts of character like hairs,face,eyes,etc seperately from 2d program and use these parts to track shadows over them. It is very lengthy process to animate light and shadows frame by frame so I'm trying hard to find a technical process that can cut off time.

7.min (shado) add a new solid and put it on top of the layer
add track mate layer enable alpha, define the shadow with your pen tool, Holding alt to redefine shadow era

you should try use shadow studio 2 plug in saves you so much more time and the lighting can be done within a min or 2

Awesome tutorial! My only concern while doing this (or doing any sort of work on projects like these) is the time-consuming process of doing these adjustments frame-by-frame. Do you know of any motion tracking abilities that may reduce the amount of time it may take to do these? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
There's a feature within After Effects called Mocha, where you can track your masks. It saves some time as the computer interpolates your keyframes. I didn't know too much about it back in 2020 when I made this tutorial. But if I was to do it again, I would probably use mocha. It's worth a shot at least! 😁

Sorry for rude question but how do you render and export this?
For some reason after render I can't see shadows
@@somniumanimationstudios oh thank you, I used just "add to render queue", then quick time, then export to handbrake and finally made it mp4, Adobe Media Encoder Queue don't work and in a lot of people in tutorials avoid this way of render for some reason
@@somniumanimationstudios well in a copy of sequence above the shadow I keep eye (visibility of layer) close 6:30 , because when I make layer visible shadows disappear, maybe at render invisible layer opens
@@somniumanimationstudios and those shadows doesn't what to show in render, other that are not "alfa matte" or independent of animation clip shows ok after render. I guess aftereffects loves me )
