Relic was designed to replace the Timescape talisman expansion that lots of people kept asking for but ffg had no intention of putting into Talisman for theme continuity reasons. It was basically here you go now stfu. They also cleaned it up and made it better since they are not totally restricted to keep with tradition like they are with talisman.
I love Talisman. Like you, I played it back when I was in high school (early '90s) and fell in love with art and stories I would create in my head. And like you, we had pages and pages of house rules to make the game more to our liking. I haven't owned a version of Talisman since 3rd edition, and I've recently purchased Relic with the 2nd expansion. Sounds like a great game.
I am getting this in the mail today and I already own almost all of the Talisman 4th Edition stuff and I think this will be a nice addition to my collection as I know not everyone likes the Fantasy theme.
I already have this game on order. Glad to see that you enjoyed it, Lance! I have never played Talisman though, so a lot of your references went over my head.
It feels so good to know I'm not the only one who calls it "Space Talisman". I've never once referred to it by it's given name to the irritation of some of my friends. I will never think about it as a Warhammer game. The excited 5-year-old inside me (that jumped out at the announcement of this game) will not allow me to think of it as anything but "Space Talisman".
Bought it Sunday and LOVE IT. I played the Rogue Trader and my pal played the Commissar. I never played Talisman but it sounds like I wouldn't enjoy it as much as Relic. It sounds like the Relic designers took the best elements or Talisman and improved upon it. Anyway....this game is also my introduction to the Warhammer 40 K universe. My pal knows quite a bit, but not an expert, however, when threat cards were drawn he could give me some interesting background on what we were facing.
You draw *2* Relics, not one, The skill tests in the inner tier do *not* "get harder and harder they test every skill in succession all with the target: 14. You *can* use a power card to beat Tzeench as it's still a test it just uses your level instead of an attribute. (Leave it to Tzeench to have the cheekiest square on the cosmic grid.....yes I believe the confusion is intentional. ) Other than that, thanks for giving some love to this great yet often overlooked and misunderstood game.
Hey Undead Viking, thanks for doing this review and explanation on all things Talisman and Relic. Over 5 years have passed since the making of this video and the chance of FFG ever doing a cleaned-up version of Talisman akin to Relic (like you asked for) is unfortunately gone now. I still like the original and later editions of Talisman, and like you I have fond memories of it from childhood. And when I play Talisman today I am going into that knowing I will spend hours on it while eating munchies and goofing around with friends. And that's fine 'cause it always was this sort of "social get-together" that is the Talisman experience. RELIC still is a similar albeit somewhat sped up experience. Unlike you I totally dig the theme of WH40K and it was actually the main reason for me to buy it. That they had actually streamlined the experience was therefore more like a pleasant surprise to me. It is still a lengthy game and people should dig the WH40K background to get the most out of it. But the most fun to be had with Talisman or RELIC is to just let the dice tell the story and go with it. If you're unwilling or unable to do that then stay away from both games.
I'll also throw my hat in on "this is a better game." God yes. This "fixes" Talisman. Although one man's Prophetess is another man's Sanctioned Psyker.... (He's seriously undefeated in the five games he's been used in.) Yet it's much faster, removes anyone's ability to troll, and I actually like the theme better so yes I love that it can be used in thematic 40k campaigns as well.
I am thinking about playing "Relic" or "Horus Heresy" but I can't make up my mind. One or my deciding factors would be the replay ability. The ability to be new and fun every time you play it. Can you please rate these two games on that level?
I love Talisman with all its simplicity. I also like Relic, but I am also a miniature addict and I think that these torsos instead of proper character figures are just disappointing. It would be much better to control a proper space marine figure, etc, than moving around a half-length portrait. I will probably buy the game anyway. :) Thanks for the review!
Great review. I also like the fantasy setting of talisman better than 40k. The changes in this game compared to Talisman would be nice. I'm interested.
Not going to lie, I was skeptical about this game. Looks like they did a good job with it though. Honestly, if the PvP is the only thing missing why not just house rule it to work like old Talisman?
I absolutely adore talisman, but I believe i may have a new obsession with relic now. Great review

Somebody over at FFG really, really liked Timescape.

Whoops, guess you did mention Timescape there at the end.
Great review. I played so much Talisman as a kid (even the Timescape expansion), so this is looking tempting.

Is that LOTR Dice Building Game behind you? If so, will you be doing a review on it?
Do you have Defenders of the Realm: Battlefields? If so, can you review?

Hello UdV....have you got your hands on the expansion, Nemesis , yet?
I haven't - but I want it desperately!

am I the only one who liked the 4th edition of Talisman over the nerfed "revised 4th edition"?
Great review. I also like the fantasy setting of talisman better than 40k. The changes in this game compared to Talisman would be nice. I'm interested.
Great review :) thanks for posting. Pushed me over the edge on that purchase :p
36:19 Yes! those are HUGE! and nice looking :)
great review, Greetings from Argentina
Great cat.
Well, you convinced me that buying this is worth it. Cheers Mr UndeadViking :)
Your complete name and address is visible during the video, I don't know if you intended that or not but that's what's happening.
I played my first ever game of talisman last week and fell in love with it. I purchased this today and I love it. I think I love you too. Lol joke
your cat is so cute
Hey, I'm a fellow 1990 graduate. ;-)
Not going to lie, I was skeptical about this game. Looks like they did a good job with it though. Honestly, if the PvP is the only thing missing why not just house rule it to work like old Talisman?
only problem I can see is that your limited to 4 players cos of the dial thingies
I'm just glad you can't be turned into a frog in this game. ;)
I do hate Talisman. Good overview!
I saw a cat! show us your cat :)
you forgot scenario cards
its good 2 c ya.
Too slow, too much grind, would not recommend to people who want to do other things on their weekend.
Is this a Tailsman review? Seriously.
