Dr Tabor's First Time in Jerusalem over Sixty Years Ago!

  • This short home movie clip captures, in a very fuzzy and faded way, my first time in Jerusalem in July, 1962--now over 60 years ago! I was just 16 years old, in my "Buddy Holly" teenage stage--the the thumbnail for the video-- having lived outside of Paris the previous year and wanting to major in literature and become a writer. Hemingway had taken his life not long before, and JFK was President and I had romanticized both, despited the very troubled times ahead in the 1960s as I returned to the USA.
Our family stopped in Jerusalem on the way back from two years in Teheran, where my father, an Air Force officer, had been stationed. That Jerusalem trip changed my life. After the clip I tell you how and why this was indeed the "beginning" of my life-long "quest for the historical Jesus."

If you have not read my book, The Jesus Dynasty, that offers the results of my quest in an exciting page-turning narrative style, here is the link to the English version. This book was a NYTimes best seller, I dedicate it to Albert Schweitzer, in whose shadow I stand, and it was translated into over 20 languages. I hope this little "blast from the past," inspires you to dive in yourself and compare notes with my own exploration and its results so far--after 61 years!

I loved it. I always wanted to go to Jerusalem and experience it, and try and imagine what it would have been like back in Jesus' day. The video footage is priceless. You were a cute teen back then, still a handsome man today. 🧚‍♀

At 26, I quit my job in a corporate office and moved to France to be a freelance writer/nanny. I'd lived in Spain in college and also developed a deep love for Hemingway. A few days after arriving in Paris and meeting my host family, I went to Shakespeare and Co. and it felt like home. I read a Moveable Feast and took the same routes Papa Hemingway did around the Île de la Cité. Like him, I was incredibly poor, making 100E per week from nannying. Whatever I made freelancing went into my $800/month student loan payments.
I'm glad I spent that year and a half broke and bumming around Paris. Mornings, I would drop off the little girl I watched, go to the Croix Rouge cafe to read my big new collection of Hemingway short stories or study French, and take the RER from St. Germain-en-Laye to the center of the city. I seldom had concrete plans and would revel in the mad freedom and privilege of wandering the boulevards with nowhere particular to go. Very sweet nostalgia--thanks for the reminder, James.

Jerusalem looked much more old school, back then.
Just the odd car, and no TV aerials.

Was watching Mr Tabors apocalypse series and he seems to be hinting that end times scenarios in Daniel, Zechariah, Ezekiel and Amos etc are in conflict with each other.
So, how does one reconcile these differences? either the prophets of old are lying, or God is changing his end time prophecies.
    Any ideas folks?
