I have a cotman set from the 1990s and a set I bought about 2 years ago. I notice a huge difference in formulation. The old set is so much better quality very close to professional grade paints where the new set is not as good.
That's too bad. I used this some time ago and have never thought they were similar to the professional, however in the last class I took I got really beautiful transparency and freshness. I like it better for me. My professor said that it doesn't matter anymore if you use pro or novice because you can put it underneath light protective glass. I'd go with what you're comfortable with! 😋🎨🖌️
Oh, one more thing. My professor said that watercolorist never earn as much as oil painters. I'm apparently not interested in making money! 😂
I have the newer set and feel like it's very close to professional...
The fighting part was really intense. 😂
I love the painting with the small house and tall dark mountains around, very atmospheric
Cotman was my first set and I never had any issues with them, of course after I tried the fancier brands I see why some people dislike them but I still enjoy them a lot 😅
I love my Cotman's always have , always will 💯❤️
I have this exact set, and my impressions are very similar to your Eve. They gave a weird texture to them, and I know they are not going to last. I like the palette, even though I had to stick the pans to the bottom of it cause I couldn't stand them moving around 😅 thank you for the video❤! Josephine
I still have the very first set of cotman I bought myself 20 years ago. I splurged when I got my first paycheque and I'm just now about to run out of the brown pan. I love them so much and will miss them when they eventually run out. The quality difference is definitely noticeable.
Thank you for your insights. I was not aware that Cotman paints were gloopy.
I like Cotman paints for the price (especially the tubes to refill your palette) but for the “gloopy” issues I prefer to substitute them with my favorite quality paints. I have an obscene amount of paints but enjoy my collection! 😂
This is so good, I love your reviews ☺☺
I like this set quite a lot, although I’ve replaced some colours. Just a bit more space for a brush and a few more things than the (also really good) cotman sketchers palette. I don’t use the cerulean hue or the white, so that let me put a couple more things in.
wonderful and detailed review :) thanks for sharing
Yeah, definitely the best review of this set!
I have a Cotman box of 12 bought about 20 years ago, still nice to use, a set of 24 bought around 8 years ago is really mediocre, as you say goopy and to me very lifeless. I guess it set me off wanting better and different. I never used the 24 set again! Iit certainly would not give results as good as yours. I kind of like the box, I always liked the old pocket box. The two Illustrations you showed first are lovely, so I guess they must have made some improvements as well, or maybe it is the colours you used. There’s no sign of the kind of stickiness my newer set used to give if you tried to layer darks on. This sounds like the same issue you had with the greens.
The artists/professional grade are so completely different and very reliable.
I would do away with the white or black for Yellow Ochre. Their Paynes grey is perfect as black for me.
Nice
I like the plastic box, but I won’t buy cotman paints again, there are tons of better options. I still have some of their pans and I don’t enjoy them.
an experienced water colorist can make Cotman paints sing, while the inexperienced painter can make the most expensive watercolors look like a dud
While that is 100% true, there is also a reason that we usually don't see experienced artists reach for Cotman when they are setting up to paint what they hope to be their next showable/sellable painting.
@@Finkeldinken "usually" that's true for most, however; some exceptional & successful water colorists use Cotman exclusively
Fair, but I can also create art with a piece of dog turd, but I'd rather use clay. If you are this "experienced water colorist" and you use Cotman, blessings upon you and yours. But, artists deserve nice supplies that they don't have to fight with at a fair price, and Cotman is simply not it anymore.
Not first 😂
