Who cares about the young people in Britain? I am a 66 year old fogie in America. I cry every time I hear this song. Because I fully understand the back-story it is about.
Yes, it's about WW-2 bombing over England and the horrible threat of conquest by the Nazis.
But, in a much broader sense, it's about the human spirit surviving and triumphing over adversity or tyranny. In ANY time, era, or locale.

I never heard this song before and I must confess I never heard of Vera Lynn. Amazingly today is my wife's birthday, she passed away at a young age. I was out at the cemetery praying and putting flowers on her grave. I was kind of weepy but being a man of great faith in God one of the last things I said before I left was "I'll see you again someday". I got out to my car to leave and "We'll Meet Again" by Vera Lynn started playing on my car radio. Having never heard this song before, it picked that moment in time to play on the radio. Praise God!

I'm a millennial, and I'm American, not British. I've never even seen the white cliffs of Dover, but when I hear Vera Lynn sing the song, it's hard not to tear up. It's a song that speaks to the resilience of the human spirit, the notion that the world around you can be falling apart but you still cling to whatever corner of hope you can grab as a life raft.

my father was a pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force in WW2, flying out of Britain. He had a rough war, going over as an idealistic late teen and coming home a toughened and embittered man who had shut off his emotions due to the losses he experienced. Dame Vera was the exception - the White Cliffs of Dover and We'll Meet Again never failed to tear him up. I don't believe that anyone who goes to war comes home unscathed, physically or emotionally. God Bless them all for their sacrifices.

Being from Germany I always spend my summer holidays in Sussex by the sea after using the ferry from Calais to Dover. Never went through the tunnel, but I always want to see the White Cliffs of Dover every time I cross the channel there. A beautiful sight - and a kind of 'philosophy'.
I have always loved Good Old England as a holiday place, contrary to my friends, who always laugh at me for they prefer Spain or Italy or Greece.
As for the song: I think it brings up memories to the people who experienced hat period of time with all its sufferings and misery. Similarly to 'Lilly Marleen', that was sung and listened to by the German people. Songs like that have become part of world culture and do not longer indicate political hostilities....

This American history teacher, always obsessed by Churchill and the Battle of Britain, discovered Dame Vera about 10 years ago. I strongly recommend you watch the footage of her singing "Land of Hope and Glory" sometime in the '50's (wearing a silver dress shaped like a bell) and backed by a male chorus; her 40th anniversary D-Day Special in '84; her VE Day Performance in Rotterdan in 1985, where elderly Dutch citizens sing along with the woman who helped them survive the German occupation (as they resisted by tuning into the BBC); the 2017 BBC tribute "We'll Meet Again;" and her final public performance in 1995 at the VE celebrations in London. And I believe everyone owes it to her to watch some of the documentary footage of her singing to "her boys" in Burma--she demanded to go where no other entertainers went, she roughed it through the jungle, put up with insects and heat and rations, sang within earshot of the Japanese, and risked her life and health to bring some magic to the men. I knew this day would come, when she would pass, but I am still very sad, and of course no one "across the pond" here knows who she is or what she did, which makes it even worse for me. In her case, all the superlatives are true: heroic, optimistic, down-to-earth, patriotic, dedicated, hard-working, sentimental, talented. She had a long recording career after the War ended, but never resented being the icon of "their finest hour." RIP, Dame Vera. You helped Britain stand alone from June of '40 to June of '41, thus saving the world (esp. the USA) from the scourge of Fascism and Nazism. I for one am grateful
