I once had a 2006 civic 1.8 and the timing chain snapped, luckily we were still in warranty but it was a huge surprise. It had a full service history and 42k miles, I can only imagine the use it has was very short journeys but it went back to honda and they couldnt fix it in warranty so we got a full refund. I stumbled across this video because I want to try the same car/engine again and hope I dont get another bad one.
The 2006-2008 in particular were known for cracking blocks (teething issue since these were the first applications of the R18). They are known to be reliable in the 2009-2015s though.
Nearly a quarter million miles on mine with no oil burn and looks clean as a whistle inside the valve cover. I've done nothing to this engine but change the VTEC gasket because it was seeping at 200k.
If you R series owners are curious, I have done my research (for those who haven't done enough research" Honda says that R series Vtec works completely different. It works only around 1500-3000 rpm for economy. It says that the traditional VTEC kick will not be heard and felt unlike those in the previous Honda engines. R series is for economy not power. Yes it has vtec but not like the older version where it is set at a certain rpm range at high output. I've done a lot of hard accelerations and flooring it and got curious cause i dont hear the vtec until i did my research. It's good I can get 11 km per liter . If I floor alot, it can get as low as 9km per liter.. highways can get you 14 km per liter.
and actually the power band is from 3000 rpm - 5500 rpm. If you pass that range, you're just losing power and damaging the engine. Here's more www.8thcivic.com/forums/garage/98006-how-vtec-works.html
Mark with mine I feel a slight boost at roughly 2800 rpm it's a more broad range to about 5500 medium boost that is smooth... old style vtec was set at 6000 strong boost to 7000... you only enjoyed a strong boost for 1000 rpms... the R18 gives a medium for longer 2800 to 5500...it doesn't kick in like old vtec cuz the power is spread out to give longer rpm boost
Tweak Silva - I’ve owned a 15z6 and now own this engine. It’s like a D15z6 but even more economical, ( can do 50 MPG in 2nd gear crawling intraffic) and like a B16a2 (I’ve owned one) but with slightly less power but more torque and vtec kicks in instantly. ( Performance cam with eco qualities activates before eco cam instead of other way around) I’ve raced an EP3 off the lights and it sticks with it until about 50mph. Perfect mix of performance & Economy. Best full tank on this car doing a long journey approx 450 miles. Normal driving with lots of traffic and shoot runs / short journeys & hard VTEC here and there 😈 350 ish miles a tank. Perfectly family commuter

Designed for efficiency. VTEC here (with SOHC) actually has the effect of lowering the power below 3500rpm and then normal afterwards, rather than the typical effect of normal power/high power band. I get stellar mileage for a 1.8L engine on the highway, 45mpg from a 11 year old engine with 140HP.

Vtec cam in R engine activated between 1 - 3.5K rpm. Other than that, normal high performance cam During vtec activate, the lifting of an intake valve reduced while timing of another intake valve prolonged. Both to activate Atkinson cycle motor To activate vtec, need certain conditions for ecu to give feedback. Basically not all the time that vtec should activate. U need to cruise or give low load for this engine to give you good mileage Between 3.5K until 5K rpm, the max torque achieved with long intake manifold. at higher than 5.2K rpm, short intake manifold take over to give high hp. But cannot match traditional NA Vtec high rpm power, unless forced induction (i guess) If you used to push your engine hard, then the ecu will always give you power which is quite fast for an 1.8 NA angine. just install electrical grounding equipment, surely you can feel the R18 power
@@RiAPRIME @TheLordstrider R18 doesn't have VTEC. The kick you're feeling is the 2-stage manifold that opens up around 5,200rpm. Similar to a base K20A3 engine.
Best bang for bucks!!!!! U will never get same mpg and power with similar ones!!!!! Cos this r18 doing 0-60mph=7.6sec 1\4 mile=15.8 AND HIGHWAY MPG OVER 45!!!!!
According to BC, best result that I get 5,3 l/100km (44 mpg) on open roads where speed vary between 60-90 km/h. But on highway, on my usual speed 140 km/h average is 7,5 l/100km (31 mpg). Worst case is a city drive and short destinations when it is usually between 8 - 9 l (26-30 mpg). For real consumption add/subtract additionally 10%, that's about how much my BC lies. I had a chance to drive a Toyota Auris Hybrid, which has 1,8 petrol but with reduced power (100hp) because it works in Atkinson cycle, on open road and highway (where there is no much benefit from electric power) i get average 6 l/100 (39 mpg) which is very nice result, approx 1,5 l less than on 1,8 Civic in same driving regime. I know that it can not be compared this 2 engines directly, but If I understood well, this i-VTEC when is activated it should be close to Atkinson cycle, or I'm wrong?

R18 do not have "i-VTEC." They only have i-VTEC-E, a similar system to the old D-Series engines that had the traditional VTEC-E. It simple terms it allows the engine to run on 12 valves rather than 16 at low loads and low engine speeds. At higher loads and higher revs, (2,200~3,500rpm) the cam switches over to normal mode or 16 valves for more power. There is no high lift cam. Some people might say they feel or hear a kick around 5,000rpm with these engines, but that is not the "VTEC" kicking in, it's the 2-stage intake manifold that engages for better output and airflow.
Destroke, more comp and put in a proper chassis like ED/EF CRX you get great milage and performance. I wonder if it could beat an oldschool 1.3 eco-vtec frankenstein. wich i'd assume to be less then 4,5 l/100km
Except it uses a plastic chain guard, defeating the purpose of a more robust timing chain instead of belt. Unfortunately, not just Honda does this and has become a standard to save on manufacturing costs..

This is one of the best naturally aspirated engines that Honda ever made. Unfortunatelly, Honda has also gone wit donwsizing and puting a lot of Horse power into small engines. That results at low maintenance cost and great driving experience, but can never have as near as good durability and reliability of a naturally aspirated engines. I hate downsizing. If you need more power, buy a car with bigger engine and not with smaller engine but with bigger turbo charger.
Super engine, untill you have a problem like screw snap inside alluminium block like I had during el. starter service. Now I have problems with it. Why do you use only 2 screws for starter, and why do you use short thread step screws so that they easily cement/jam in to alluminium? Because of that now complete engine must go out of car and sent to precision machinery to take this shit out and re-thread hole, it will not be cheap.

I stumbled across this video because I want to try the same car/engine again and hope I dont get another bad one.
shit happens, probably production defect
The 2006-2008 in particular were known for cracking blocks (teething issue since these were the first applications of the R18). They are known to be reliable in the 2009-2015s though.
Had to research since we are getting a Civic 1.8 e. Same engine as shown in the video. Didn’t know about it till now. Great info
Here's more
www.8thcivic.com/forums/garage/98006-how-vtec-works.html
Mark with mine I feel a slight boost at roughly 2800 rpm it's a more broad range to about 5500 medium boost that is smooth... old style vtec was set at 6000 strong boost to 7000... you only enjoyed a strong boost for 1000 rpms... the R18 gives a medium for longer 2800 to 5500...it doesn't kick in like old vtec cuz the power is spread out to give longer rpm boost
So.... its basically like the d15z6 engine from the 96-00 civics, ek3.
@@PreciousMetalinvest ok dude, thanks. I Just bought a 1.8 Civic with this engine. R18a2. Now I have both ek3 and fk2!! Im just confused with the right oil to use on it... should use 0w30 or 5w30??
My 2010 Civic sedan is awesome car with this engine great mpg. Only issue is low torque but u get used to it.
Look up the Kraftwerks supercharger. That fixed my problem
Still more than the average petrol car. I just downshift when I want a bit more out of it.

Vtec cam in R engine activated between 1 - 3.5K rpm. Other than that, normal high performance cam
During vtec activate, the lifting of an intake valve reduced while timing of another intake valve prolonged. Both to activate Atkinson cycle motor
To activate vtec, need certain conditions for ecu to give feedback.
Basically not all the time that vtec should activate. U need to cruise or give low load for this engine to give you good mileage
Between 3.5K until 5K rpm, the max torque achieved with long intake manifold. at higher than 5.2K rpm, short intake manifold take over to give high hp. But cannot match traditional NA Vtec high rpm power, unless forced induction (i guess)
If you used to push your engine hard, then the ecu will always give you power which is quite fast for an 1.8 NA angine. just install electrical grounding equipment, surely you can feel the R18 power

1\4 mile=15.8
AND
HIGHWAY MPG OVER 45!!!!!
ueg1974 never once got over 37 mpg in my 2006 civic and I keep close records of my fuel economy. I think these are great cars still
According to BC, best result that I get 5,3 l/100km (44 mpg) on open roads where speed vary between 60-90 km/h.

Sounds like it’s the best engine ever made. Why have they gotten rid of it?
It was in the HR-V until 2022
