Finding the top things to do in a city can be a challenge, in large cities across Poland like Gdansk it can be difficult to filter out all of the must see suggestions you read online or pamphlets. With our trop to Gdańsk City we decided to ask you guys for some things to do!
Poland itself has been amazing, but we wanted to travel a bit further and visit some spots we might not otherwise see in a typical city guide or on RUclips already.
Fortunately for us, Polska was playing in the football world cup so we ended up going super local and creating an afternoon of our own favourite things to do!... or drink, in Poland.

Before WW2 Zaspa was an airport. That is why you can find flat hardgrounded spaces there. After the War communist authorities decided to build a huge complex of apartment blocks in the type you can find all over east-central Europe and Russia.

    • @DanegerAndStacey

That explains a LOT! Thank you for that info.

    • @adamwnt
      @adamwnt 4 года назад

Exactly and just to add some more infos the new airport was built outside the city while these blocks were all grey and tedious in the past, hence after the collapse of communism they were all decorated to give some vibe to the area. This is the neighbourhood I grew up in.

      No Olga.
It was Gdańsk Airport open to civilian traffic, before it was moved to Rębiechowo in early 70-ies and Zaspa was built.
John Paul II Street is an old runway.
I know. I virtually grew up there.
      Greetings from Canada!

Yes to these local tips videos - especially when they are "helped along" by good local beer :) Visiting a local bar like you did here shows more about the spirit and reality of the place you are visiting than ever a staged tourist location can. The tourists sites are fine but to get under the skin of the place, you have to do what you guys did in this video. Loved it!

Always the risk when you go a bit toooo local huh! We're generally really cautious, not because we can't handle ourselves or don't have the street smarts, but the expensive camera we carry around is a walking target and gives us away! Must say I have so much fun watching this. I stumbled across one of the Kraków videos by chance some 2h ago and just watched all of them plus Gdańsk now. Seeing some places I know very well + some others that I plan to see in the future (and probably should have seen a long time ago but I usually visit Kraków or Gdańsk when I go to concerts so there's not really a lot of time to just walk around those cities with a camera). i'll be sure to catch up with some older ones from other countries :)

On a different note: I gather you guys are walkers, but maybe if you like biking and are planning to bounce between some other cities in Poland it'd do you good to register for the city bike system? It's quite cheap. I know there is one in Warsaw (it's called Veturilo), Łódź, Wrocław, Białystok, Częstochowa, Poznań and a bunch of other cities. It's the same corporation (nextbike I think) so you can use them from one account. If you're into in of course. Best

It is industrial region with coal mines in general. The city of Katowice is cultural center with lot of places to visit. In nerby city where i live - Zabrze (20 km from Katowice) there is dope Coal Mine Museum - GUIDO. It’s old coal mine with two tipes of road trips - for beginers and extreme one where you need apararure, uniforms and breathing accesory. I thing you’ll love it! Keep You good work!

you have accidentally found the worst local in the area :D
    1. WWII museum highly recommended - much better then may sound
    2. Oliva cathedral is overrated, typical "tourist attraction" (tho the surroundings looks amazing during autumn)
    3. You have to check out Sopot, you will get there by the same city train. Check the recommended locals at monte cassino street - ends by long wooden pier

If you will visit Katowice, I invite you for a tour in Zagłębie Palace of Culture in Dąbrowa Górnicza (next to the Katowice). There are also a beautiful beaches almost in the center of the city and I know an excellent restaurant in Sosnowiec.

Used to live there, my in-laws still live there.
This place used to be an airfield and the airport for Gdańsk.
Then they built a new airport outside the city, and built a huge living area on the airfield.
    Around 26,000 people live there.
This was the communist era "big plate" building method.
They premanufactured these huge block elements of the buildings, and then just assembled them on the spot. They looked terrible, they used to be raw, unpainted, uninsulated cement blocks.

3:43 Gdańsk Zaspa: a former (1919-1974) airport in Gdańsk. There are still hangars there used by Germans (and then Poles) for planes (but they are too small to host Zeppelins (airships)).
Here airship Hindenburg over Danzig: wiez.com.pl/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/Danzig-Gdansk-Houelle-Grass.jpg
