The gear system is genuinely a stroke of genius.
I've played so many games where you get gear, and its just this "Oh well its only common" and while the excitement of getting a "rare drop" is cool, there is an unsatisfying fatigue when it comes to just continuously getting gear that doesnt seem to evolve or progress, or alternatively upgrading gear that is immediately invalidated by another piece of gear you werent predicting to get

    • @yvesgomes
      @yvesgomes Месяц назад +3

It seems to be a new take on a similar concept that some games already have and which, in my opinion, works very well. Nioh (1 & 2) has something vaguely like it. God of War Ragnarok has a more streamlined version of it. When you find gear, it's usually of a level that your current gear will/would be in if you have upgraded it regularly, so you don't need to worry about investing on upgrading it just to try it out. I very much appreciate it.
In Ragnarok, there is even a funny case of an armor set that you get in pieces in a sequence across a rather long time. So, each piece actually comes in a different level, according to the gear you'd likely have at the time you get it. Very clever.

Yay! That’s a variation on the friendship/rivalry mechanic! I was so disappointed when they went with a regular, boring old approval mechanic in Inquisition after having played DAII. It makes sense since there were so many companions in Inquisition but I really liked the friendship/rivalry in DAII.
And I am very familiar with the hand-me-down waterfall LOL

My ideal rpg length is probably around 60-70h, with a lot of meaty content, but also a chance to replay the game a few times. But I'll take even 100h if it means more completionist pt.
The game looks really good so far. I was initially apprehensive, esp when it comes to mage combat, but I do like how fast-paced and reactive it feels after watching some footage. I'm psyched about visiting so many new areas of Thedas. Can't wait to get my hands on the game.

On topic of game length, I have held for most of my life that the longer a game is, the more I like it. I realize now as I've gotten older, and especially with BG3, a game I really enjoy, how that I actually enjoy games like Mass Effect 2 which were pretty much about 30 hours long, but extremely replayable. That's not to say I won't do the ultra long game with lots of stuff, but I do know that even as much as I love BG3, it feels like I am committing to at least a month or more of play, and with so many games out there I like and want to play, it makes it harder for me to get to see the depth of a game because I am less likely to replay it as much as I would another shorter game.

It’s weird to think that the game should only have options that you like and nothing for what someone else would like. If you don’t want to change your characters pronouns or play as an androgynous Rook then don’t because you literally don’t have to. It’s an option. It’s not going to ruin your game. In terms of game length, I think Cyberpunk had the right idea. The main quest isn't too long, but the side content is massive, making up about 3/4ths of the runtime. I don't need a story to be 100h or even 30h to be worthwhile, so long as it's well-written and has sufficient depth.
Making the main quest shorter could actually make it far easier to implement more complex branching choices, as there would be less to have to work around. While keeping the bulk of the side-content optional gives it more space to breathe as it doesn't have to fit into the overarching narrative.

The whole point of a character creation system is to allow players the freedom to do that and play as who or what they want. 5:35 The Mass Effect 3 solo campaign also upgrades weapons and weapon mods every time you find or purchase the same item - I think to level X (ten) or higher after multiple playthroughs. The randomized loot boxes in ME3 multi-player are similar, but more frustrating, because you can play for 12 literal years and still not get the gear or character you want, while stockpiling enough shotgun and sniper rile mods to run an army of Reaper troops. Still, ME3 Multiplayer (2012) remains my favorite multi-player of all time.
Edit: DA2 had companion-specific armor upgrades at specific vendors, too, and DAI had some companion-specific armor as well, not just class-specific.

Seems likely the same gear is going to be in the same places each time. And there's surely not much of it given it has to be doled out exclusively to the appropriate companion. In a good RPG you don't cascade your items down through your companions when main character gets a new item, because it generally doesn't apply to the companion build. That's the point - they're different companions with different abilities, so cascading doesn't always work. And here it's all gone anyway.
Yes, it's streamlining but excessively so, by the looks. Inventory management can be a drag but it is part of the deal. Or used to be, at least. Clearly nobody is going to be spending an hour on the inventory screen here - for some that's a boon, no doubt. For others though it's going to reduce involvement and sense of personalisation.
Over-streamlining kills actual gameplay. I mean, why bother with any of it, ultimately - just press button and have game play itself?
They also call items "uncommon" (and legendary etc). But there aren't going to be common items, really, are there - else what did the streamlining achieve? Strikes me there isn't going to be much variety, not much scope for tinkering, not much personalisation etc - except superficially.
Also, they said if you upgrade the shops (!) it upgrades all items found in the chests! Err....that's weird. And immersion breaking. Somehow the shop level determines the item level that you find in hidden chests. That's very odd and, again, immersion breaking. You're supposed to be trying to plant folks in the story yet these things are telling you it's all a construct. Hmmm. Colour me (very) sceptical.
Not to mention that there seems almost no difference in playstyle available (ranged looks just like melee), there's no element of surprise in combat (no ambushes, etc) and the AI and level design so lacking every encounter plays out the same - a big blob of enemies being pounded with overly-colourful and busy light effects.
Meh. Looks real bad to me. And nothing to do with DEI or Woke making it bad. It's just bad.

EVERY person I know who played the series wanted more skins in Origins but loved the range of stats and the swapability. We universally HATED the "bespoke" companion gear of DA:2 which is *why they took it out of DA:I*. The lack of range of gear and inability to share gear in DA:2 was a HUGE sore point for pretty much everyone who reviewed it. The ability to swap, change, dye and craft gear how WE wanted it was something that pretty much everyone praised in Inquisition. I'm getting really frustrated with the gaslighting and retconning to justify their bizarre choices. They seriously need to stop telling people that "they heard what we said" when we NEVER SAID THAT!!

From what I've been able to gather from the HOURS of gameplay reviews over the last couple days, it looks like only the Inquisitor is recreatable and only Inquisition is available to set the world state. It kind of makes sense since they retconned SO MUCH from Origins, DA:A and DA:2. I mean, blood magic, Templars, mage abilities, the Crows, Tevinter, Connor, Weisshaupt and the Warden Base and hierarchy, Morrigan, how Lyrium works, Spirit Healing, Blood Magic, spirit and demon possession, the Blight and how it affects people and how deadly it is, how demons are born, how spirits interact with the world, and how health pots/poultices work, runes, crafting and imbuing gear with magic, Dwarven physiology and magic, and how combat works are ALL totally retconned. I'm not sure how many of the events and choices from world stated before Inquisition would even be compatible now :(

@@noctoiThey were some articles like the PCGamesN and Gamespot articles and videos stating that the keep is not complete and it will feature choices from Origins and II but only the “Important choices” from those games that will affect Veilguard.
Still a lot of people want the Origins and II romances to be acknowledged in Veilguard especially since people want the Morrigan romance to be acknowledged in Veilguard.
