Mostly out of childish reasons but whenever I tried going back to yugiho I found the game so wildly different that I both couldn't get back into it or really like it. i actually don’t think the people who are buying these are just wandering into a yugioh tournament trying to play with it. Most of the people who quit playing before never competed in tournaments to begin with and/or quit because of synchros/xyz/pendulums/links. Those people might never be satisfied with an updated deck, they just want to play in a casual format like the playground again.

Exactly this. Konami tries pandering to people who never even got a real taste of the game, even of their time, but keeps making them bad products anyways. I'd much rather get an authentic set of utopia and Stardust dragon get a set clashing or red hot dragon archfiend and galaxy eyes over the Egyptian god structure decks. It's not like kids just stopped existing after the DM anime. There's plenty of people who'd probably pick something up if they saw their childhood was being represented too instead of BEWD and DM dueling again. Konami just kinda gave up on other fans before they even began and keeps giving DM fans who already hate the game more things

You just described what pokemon did their anniversary pack (Evolutions) - release all the base set cards with the same art, and similar template to older cards, but updating all of the stats and effects for modern game. Granted it was still a nostalgia pack and 90% still didn't see competitive play, but a few cards DID. It wasn't just a rerelease, it was an actual new set.

Actually the idea of a "Legend of Blue-Eyes: Reloaded" isn't a bad idea. It can add in a few of the modern cards that support the archetypes featured in it. Like Magician's Souls could get a Super reprint, along with Bingo Machine GO. That or they really should just print all the updated Anime Legacy Deck Support (Dark Magician, Blue-Eyes, Heroes, Harpies, Etc.) in new Structure Decks, so we have more space in the regular sets for new things. Core Sets should only be for new archetypes imo, legacy can have structures and those special reprint/Legendary Duelist sets. I'm probably wrong about that, but that'd be my ideal Yu-Gi-Oh! Card Economy as a Softcore Yu-Gi-Oh Star.

I get that most people remember the original Duel Monsters show from way back when, but imo if Konami keeps nostalgia pandering, do it for different series. Tons of newer players grew up with shows like 5DS, Zexal, Arc-V, etc, so why not try to do those series instead of DM?
And if Konami is gonna reprint old boxes (legendary collection, legendary decks, etc) do it for ones that have been out of print more - I’d love to see a legendary dragon decks reprint, a reprint of legendary hero decks, hell even reprinting those Yugi kaiba collectors boxes that have the jumbo card, duelist packs, and reloaded starter decks if you’re gonna reprint duel monsters nostalgia.

It’s different in Japan - if you look over there, they tend to give much more balanced treatment to all the series, including the Rush ones.
A good example is the live duel events with voice actors. If you look at the list, you’ll see Japan has a tonne of live duels between characters from later series (when Arc-V and Vrains were airing, it was almost entirely characters from those), but the number of live duels in America that don’t involve a character from DM can be counted on one hand.

Nostalgia Pandering isn't bad if done occasionally, but for the past 6 years or so, it feels like Konami has been milking DM era dry. Like I get you wanna take the free money on the table thats there with DM Pandering, but at some point the consumer will get tired of it. To be fair in recent years they have been trying to be more unique on which decks will receive legacy support. Like for example the two DM era packs in Series 12 (Legacy of Destruction and Infinite Forbidden) are both DM era but they're Exodia and Yugi Moto's Season 5 deck retrains. (Gandora, Silent Magician/Swordsman)
Not just the standard "More Dark Magician and Blue Eyes"
GX has this too. Recently we've been getting more deep cuts like; Volcanic, Fossil, Arcana Force, Yubel, Ancient Gears, Crystal Beast (etc.) then just the standard "More HEROs"

From a collector's POV, I was glad they reprinted the old sets. I could fill in some of the blanks I have without having to break the bank. However, I didn't buy the boxes. I bought the singles. Opening the old sets is a huge loss unless you get really good pulls. They could have at least released these sets with an increased number of secret rares, ultra rares, and so on in each pack/box. That way you wouldn't be losing so much. Because any card you pull from these is not going to have the value of the OG prints. So might as well give us a higher chance of getting the harder to get cards.

At that point, just make a collection of all the old YGO sets, like the Numbers Box that was in OCG. Make it a reasonable price or split the box with different criteria and boom, nostalgia players would buy it. Add some promo card that has a chance to be collectors if you want to pander to collectors.

Sure I don't play competitively, just casually, collect cards and mostly play their mobile games like MD and DL.
My issue with these products pandering to the Yugiboomers, is well that's it just focused on Duel Monsters (1st YGO, OG YGO, whatever name they give for the 1st YGO in the series). I look at the OCG and they're giving love to all series for the 25th Anniversary, no correction, they've always done so since forever. I'm like where's that amount of love here in the TCG at? Not all of us are close minded, most of us love the other series be it GX, 5Ds, ZEXAL even. Hell they even celebrated 5Ds 15th Anniversary last year with some nice merch. Something I’ll mention is that these products are most likely not designed for people who want to “take down” or even go to their local card shop. We have to remember that many people still like just COLLECTING the cards and don’t care about playing or competing, which is perfectly fine!
Pokemon tcg exemplifies this the most, I would say. Many people from kids of today to kids of 20 years ago, and even influencers buy Pokemon cards mostly to collect and trade. I remember so many kids collecting and trading cards, but never knowing how to play the game of Pokemon cards. And that was perfectly fine!

The reprint sets were such a lazy job because they changed nothing and just copy pasted the old set. It was nothing but a half-assed cash grab. I think that at the end of the day, it always boils down to Konami TCG not caring at all about the fans. They never have, and they never will. It's the only way to explain why all our products are inferior to the OCG in a 1 to 1 comparison for any product. Konami TCG is doing anything it can to work less, and make more.

I feel like the issue with these new nostalgia based products is how people view the game. I got into some Pokemon and Yugioh again recently because of some level of nostalgia and when I went to buy Pokemon cards I went for the 151 collectors addition because I feel like Pokemon cards are fun to collect and that’s what spoke to me from my youth. But when it came time to buy Yugioh cards I went with the 25th anniversary rarity collection full of cards I had never used before because I felt like if I ever wanted to actually play this game that was what I needed to have any chance of having fun

Bad as they may be, I actually like the old sets, mostly just because I like collecting things.
That said, something I think they could have done to improve the rereleases would have been this: in ADDITION to the usual rare-secret rare you get in your pack, add in one random card from this set, but make it into a random rarity from Super up (ex. You could pull a secret rare Petite Dragon, or a super rare Gaia the Dragon Champion). I just think it would be fun. (Plus, I really want to see some of the old commons printed in higher rarities).

I actually like the older sets being reprinted in all their old glory. I understand that many of those cards are just unplayable by modern standards, and they shouldn't be charging $5 for a pack of LOB, but it's really nice to be able to open these up and collect the cards for all the people who weren't around back then. When I first got back into modern yugioh, I kept going back and forth between getting the newer sets and hunting down an older set or structure deck that was still relatively cheap. And that's the other issue, yugioh cards are limited by their printings and even things released 3-4 years ago are most likely going to be selling for a decent chunk above MSRP unless the set utterly flopped. Getting reprints just for nostalgia bait is fine imo, but they definitely should be selling them at a lower price or at least as some kinds of themed bundles that have related promos or something on top of just the old cards

I was so happy to finally get the first six boosters reprinted. As a kid I couldn't afford to collect them. As an adult I spent $1500 AUD to complete the sets. I love nostalgia stuff, nothing wrong with it. The problem is the game has evolved beyond that point. I'd happily play decks from 2003 for the rest of my days because I had no one to duel as a kid.
What I dislike is when they do it piecemeal like they did with the legendary boosters, I shouldn't have to spend $40-60 on a box that doesn't give me a large chunk of cards from my childhood!
I also believe the meta ruins everything.
That being said though, if they can make decks like snake eyes and the such then surely konami could make meta relevant decks/support for Dark Magician. I just want to play as Yugi at locals and not lose all the time.

Still waiting for more alternate formats that compel people to try out and obtain cards for them than in turn, HOPEFULLY, would open more the options for Konami to make products, even if they include a lot of classic cards, so they are more entertaining beyond someone going “hey! I recognize blue eyes”, buying a box, not understanding what went wrong and permanently losing that person from the community instead of being someone eased into something. I think speed duel was a good idea to do so, but it needed a bit more work.

I usually agree with your takes on things, but I can't say I do this time. People like these products because they can play like they did back in school. They don't want modernized versions. They want nostalgia. If a new player tries these reprints and has fun, and then sees modern yugioh and doesn't like it that doesn't mean the reprints are bad. It means modern yugioh is not what that person likes. There is nothing wrong with both types of products existing side by side. To try and alter one product as a tool to bring people over to the other only results in ruining what that product is. I'd never say no to the reprint type products being cheaper though.

    • @RNGHater
      @RNGHater 5 месяцев назад +1

There are more issues that you are not even considering, because Nostalgia blinds you. Old sets didn't have a guaranteed Super in every pack. So your nostalgia made you waste say... 50-70 dollars on a box, where you maybe got a Super Rare Celtic Guardian. Cool, you could have gotten all those cards by buying singles for probably half the price. And if you only bought packs, the issue gets bigger.
No, the product needs an update, one way ot another. If you want your nostalgia... Just merge two sets that have too many vanillas, extract all vanillas that don't have a fusion related to them, and boom. A set that is worth buying for nostalgia and reprints for old school players.

    • @Richard-Ford
      @Richard-Ford 5 месяцев назад +1

@@RNGHater Those problems exist for modern sets as much as they do for older ones, only slightly different. Now you have sets where you have to get the rarest cards for archetypes to function at all, and have them split over multiple sets. You can buy singles from modern sets to make proficient decks cheaper than buying boxes and hoping.
It's not being blinded by nostalgia when the product is sought out for nostalgia. We accept the product for it's flaws and enjoy it all the same. If people didn't, then none of the reprint sets would have sold at all.

    • @RNGHater
      @RNGHater 5 месяцев назад +1

"Accept the flaws". Dude, we are still complaining about rarity distribution in the TCG compared to the OCG. Also, is the product really that "succesful" if it doesn't generate a new long-term client? This has been a problem in OCG. You think TCG, which has a worse card distribution than OCG, doesn't have this problem?
The Slifer and Obelisk Starter decks were aimed to Nostalgia Players. Didn't sold well, except for the HFD reprint. Which they reprinted months later in the Traptrix SD, which was a way better product even for retro format reprints (Yep HAT core).
There are better ways of doing Nostalgia product rather than a lazy effort that doesn't fix any of the issues for retro format enjoyers. I would love to play Edison... *look Trap Dustshoot price* Nevermind.

I'm a hardcore old school guy. I've been back into Yu-Gi-Oh since around November of last year. So my first real life pack was pretty recent despite being an old school fan. I would like to be able to open LOB packs TBH and I think there's much value in it to be.. Canon? I mean to say true as much as possible to the original thing. My original plan is to collect every card of these 4 old sets in binders. What they could've done for me is to either improve, or rather flatten, the pull rates, or sell them for cheaper. Maybe a ready made binder? As you've said, they don't hold any competitive value. P.S., Yu-Gi-Oh is pretty expensive in Egypt (where I'm from). What I really liked though was the Legendary Collection, I bought one and I'm pretty content with it. To offset the cost, I bought it with some other guy who took 5 of the packs and I took the LOB and the Promo pack for myself. I'm thinking about buying 3 of the Legendary Decks 2 for the nostalgia/collection bit + having playsets for future Blue Eyes, Yugi, and Red Eyes decks that'll definitely have a shot at-my brother calls me insane for this. What do you think though? Anyways. The deck I'm building first is a Winged Dragon of Ra one. I'll get my first job sooner or later and I'll be importing it from the UK with the first money I get.

What's the point if they aren't continuing the DM anime. That would be cool. Kinda like how the Dragonball movies paved the way to continue the anime, and I thought Dark Side of Dimensions was going to be that, but that was 7 years ago. I’m under no impression that they are modern usable cards, but as someone who had a big collection of old cards way back when it first came out and lost them all, it feels like I have a second chance to rebuild most of what I used to have. I’ve always been a sucker for nostalgia when it comes to everything in life, too. These are purely collectables. I don’t think anyone who is old enough for these products to appeal to is going to be immature enough to trying building a deck with and playing seriously with.

I gotta be honest, I completely disagree. I think for some of the products having them set up as nostalgic products that can also be used to get people into the modern game is a great thing. But for others, I feel that having a product that is purely meant for nostalgic reasons is not a bad thing. At multiple of the locals in my city the retro packs and LOB specifically were selling out and were going for more than double the MSRP, same online too. It was cool to relive for older players like me who remember LOB being on shelves and those sets because of how generic are actually semi draft able if you really want to. As someone who is both an old head and collector but also a competitive modern tournament goer, I don’t think every single product needs to be revolving around getting old players back into the modern game. I didn’t see anybody pick up lob and think they could play modern yugioh, they just did it to have fun product to open and I think it was perfect, and I would personally not have bought any of it if the set had been changed in any significant way.(even the minor ones almost made me not wanna buy it)
With stuff like the legendary decks I totally agree that they should make them better and more playable, same with like the yugi and kaiba decks. But sometimes you can just have a cool product to have fun opening, maybe play a tiny bit with and throw in the bulk and that’s what the 25th anniversary rerelease packs are.

It sucks that all Classic Yu-gi-oh is for anymore is for Konami to feed off our nostalgia. They could easily make good support for popular DM era archtypes (I guess they have done some, and yes Blue-Eyes and Dark Magician get alot of cards but never the stuff needed to make them good, same with Red-Eyes) and such and make them more competitive as well as make new products based around our old favorite characters rather then using artwork to sell a tin or reselling us LOB for the 50th time. The ABC and Magnet Warrior Decks come to mind, as they were clearly intended to be retrains of the battle city yugi and kiaba decks thought one was strictly better then the other.

I think that the Asian-English starter decks are absolutely a product Konami should consider bringing to the west. Sure, they’re still not meta, but for products featuring the game’s most iconic monsters, they aren’t terrible places to start. Sure can’t do any worse than the Egyptian God starter decks lol.
I like your idea of an updated set. Pokémon did similar in 2016 with XY - Evolutions, which featured updated versions of selected Base Set cards, alongside some new ones. I appreciate the appeal of faithful classic reprints - I bought a few packs for a hit of the ol’ nostalgia, but while kid me would have LOVED a Metal Raiders box, I didn’t because I couldn’t justify spending £65 on bulk.
A reprint set focusing on the core DM era archetypes like Dark Magician, Blue Eyes, Red-Eyes etc with some of the more recent retrains like Illusions and modern day staples could be a pretty good idea.
Basically, the focus needs to shift from just selling to nostalgia fans to retaining them, and converting them to modern Yu-Gi-Oh!.

I love DM don't get me wrong but the nostalgia for it has basically become a crutch for Konami especially with how long it's been happening. The others series are just as important to the franchise as the original and deserve just as much recognition.

Exactly this konami USA and DM Era fans think DM is the only thing that will sell when they never try selling anything for other anime fans in the first place. I've watched everything up to Zexal and love it all, cause it's all yugioh. I think the lack of effort for 5Ds+ is what kills the chances of anyone getting back into the game, not getting DM fans back into it. It's why, despite being such a young franchise, most of the fans are late teens all the way to 30 year old men. It's like konami doesn't even wanna appeal to kids or early teens

The problem is that a lot of the old school archetypes HAVE modern support, but the best they can be at the moment are rogue strategies even if they work. (Blue-Eyes, Dark Magician, Red-Eyes, Harpies, etc) Honestly, if Konami wants to bring in those nostalgic players, they should release new structure decks that have most of the relevant modern support that those archetypes have. I'm not saying make them playable at locals straight out of the box. But maybe give you a good base that you can mix with another archetype or modern strategy to improve the deck later. Releasing old packs that have a bunch of vanilla monsters that were useless even back in the day is not the wave tbh

My furthest dueling “experience” was up to the battle city era cards and dueling very casually with friends/family. Fast forward to now, that dueling itch comes back, but modern yugioh is WAY over my head and not something I want to spend time and $ learning. I want to play yugioh how I remember and enjoyed playing it. Enter these type of products
They serve my exact purpose of wanting to reconnect with yugioh in a familiar and approachable way that isn’t crazy overpriced. I get to have the experience I want, but I’m informed enough (thanks to channels like this) to understand these cards and decks aren’t competitively viable at all. My only expectation is very casual fun and nostalgia, and these accomplish that perfectly. Not the same for everybody of course, and I understand a lot of the perspective you gave on it, but this is a W product for the type of yugioh consumer I am

Personally, I think a middle ground would be updated Yugiboomer/DM sets that aren’t full modern Advanced level. If someone wants to get like a LoB deck for nostalgia reasons, there’s over 20 years of changes to the modern game.
A Yugiboomer (such as me) might want to get back into the game as they remember it, so making it 2024-level with all the turn 0 and 1 interactions and summons and effects and negates may be overwhelming and not be what they’re interested in.
Perhaps something like an Edison-level deck that’s more modern than DM but not throwing them completely into the deep end with current modern.
I’m perfectly content with Speed Duel (aside from half zones and LP), but I can understand someone wanting to go beyond that but not wanting modern Advanced.

We Yugi Boomers already know what we are getting when we buy these old school anniversary products.
7:03 to 7:57. I think they can easily solve that part by expanding more of the "Legendary duelist's" product line. They just need new naming, different naming, have the iconic monster on the product and the iconic character from the show that used that iconic monster. Now if the iconic monster is a archetype they can have separate support packaging for that iconic monster.
    Examples....Read down.
Blue Eyes White Dragon and Seto Kabia on the packaging. Name product = Seto Kaiba Power of the Blue Eyes. (Or whatever). This volume/package is mostly or all Blue Eyes White Dragon Support only.
Dark Magicians. Yami and Arkana. Both of them staring down at each other with their iconic Dark Magician behind them. Name product. Master and Servant volume 1. All Dark Magician support cards only. It will have Yami's Dark Magician and Arkana's Dark Magician in the volume.

Hey guys!! Would love it if you would do a review of this non Konami branded Yu-Gi-Oh starter kit going around! It's a big box that says it comes with sleeves, a starter deck, a playmat, and some packs? Love your Yu-Gi-Oh product reviews!

In essence, that's what the "Legendary Duelists" sets were aiming to do, right? The issue is that they failed to make those sets appealing to players due to shortprinting of important staple reprints, low impact of modernization support and a relative failing to actually make the sets appealing to the casual playerbase to buy and open.

I do agree that stuff could be modernized. For the most part Vanilla Monsters just don't cut it and the ones that do like dark Magician or blue eyes white dragon are part of archetypes that have a bunch of support. And in many cases are garnets that you want to never draw to hand. It's nostalgic sure but outdated beyond any real tournament viability. It just drives the value down on classic ultras like LOB dark Magician which comes to mind, without adding anything to the game. And new players that would buy this wouldn't get viable competitive decks.

I hate modern yugioh and only like 2002 to 2005 yugioh.
They need to pick a lane. Either pander to the nostalgia of the old game more, or only make new stuff for current players.
None of this mixed crap, because it waters it down with garbage that i dont care an iota about, and for modern players it waters down what they want with the older stuff.
That all said, i basically have all the cards i will ever want from the era of the game that i like. Im no longer a target demographic for the companies printing and distributing the cards.
Retrains mainly piss me off, i hard disagree with them being made. It doesn't pull me in at all.
