I purchase a bag of 120 peace dollars from a man on ebay .i guess he was just unloading his silver brcause of the rise in silver and didnt check dates or didnt know what he had there were 3 1928's in the lot .1 was really bad 2 were in AU condition.
It’s not really the smelters fault. They can’t just not melt the coins after paying for them. It’s the people who sell to the smelters need to stop selling them to smelters. 😂
Some identification can reveal dates. Read on coin forums how a "slick" Type-I standing liberty quarter found in a "junk silver" box was identified as a 1916 and worth $1000. You gotta know what to look for.
I feel the exact same way. Story time. When I was 12 or 13 (1978-79) ,I helped a Nashville coin dealer load probably 15 to 20 of the huge cloth mint bags ,loaded with Morgan and Peace dollars, into his trunk. They were headed to be melted. I was still in my Indian cents and Buffalo nickel phase then,so there was nothing I could do about it. At best ,I probably had ten bucks on me . He let me pick 4 out as payment for the help. Very similar to your situation here, there were some really good things in there. I pulled a well worn 83 CC, as one of the four I got for helping. His junk ended up being prized pieces in my collection ,at least until I could afford to buy the better stuff. Some memories are better treasure ,than the actual treasures.
Seeing good coins like these Peace dollars that were in effect off to the scrap yard being rescued is wonderful. It also makes me reflect about how many coins have been lost in meltdowns. I recall hearing that approximately 90% of all silver dollars have been lost this way be it from private cash grabs like this one or remelts for re-minting other silver currency or things like the Manhattan project. It brings into focus just how much rarer things are when compared to original mintage numbers and the fact they are only going to become scarcer to find down the road.
Daniel: I missed this video you posted several years ago, but it is just amazing that anyone would send coins in to be melted down into bars. I can understand it with junk silverware, but not coins. Thanks for saving these and I bet everyone who bought one of these from you is VERY happy now. Cheers.
People are crazy! There are so many collectors and coin enthusiasts who would love to have a full date and MM collection, especially Peace Dollars! For THE LOVE OF COINS, DONT MELT THEM! 😥
Wow! That’s just amazing how some people just have no clue what they have and just bag them up like that! Hopefully you were able to resale some ( if not all) of them and save them. Thanks for show us what you see as a coin dealer coming thru your door! Amazing! 👍
Very true. People, Stop melting Silver US Currency! !! Peace Dollars, Morgan’s, Constitutional Silver, American Eagles, and yes even those greasy war nickels. These coins won’t ever be minted again. Americans will need these coins in the years ahead. Be well.
A lot of people just see it as silver, a way to make a quick buck. However, I doubt the nicer ones are getting melted. Just like this guy didn't melt -- he knew he could get more from a coin shop. Heck, we have a Melter that takes it a step further, they have a retail store front. So they definitely watch out for it and sell at a premium. Looks like you scored with a number of nice dates.
This video is very informative, I like the peace dollar a lot and I have a couple that I got from you. I am still stuck on the 90% silver quarters and dimes, and roll hunting on my own for silver or anything that’s collectible. There’s so much to learn But I love it! Wish I had more money to spend because I sure would, LOL 😂 Thanks for all your help, Daniel!
When Silver shot up to almost $50.00 tr.oz. in 1979-80 and 2011, so much Silver came out of the woodwork, that refiners had months backlog of it. They couldn't melt it fast enough.
Peace dollars are the way to go. Over the last few years I was buying 100 at a time for $15 a peace. I would take the best ones out and put them away in 2×2's and sell the rest.
I think it should be illegal to melt our old coinage down part of our history Heritage that can never be replaced or reproduced even if they make new Morgan and Peace dollars like they're doing they're not the same as the ones that have been out there for a hundred years great video glad you saved them!! Peace dollars are my favorite too my great-grandma gave me a 1922 peace dollar when I was a kid it started my coin collecting bullion collecting and I still have that peace dollar from her separate from all my other bullion
No refinery, at least any I've been to, would melt those. They might only give you 90-95% of scrap value but they'll be reselling them wholesale. Even culls will be saved as junk silver and resold.
I have just started and paused this video just to make this comment; PLEASE DO NOT MELT CONSTITUTIONAL SILVER...PLEASE. That is part of our history...and I don't care how slick the coin is (unless it is TOTALLY damaged).
Wow Daniel, thank you for saving them. A VG10 1921 is worth almost $100. A "stacker" probably wanted to melt them. Thank you for teaching the unaware about numismatics.
Daniel, thank you for all your videos! I'm a new collector, and I love Peace Dollars. I also love Walking Liberty halves - to me those two are just really nice to look at and hold. For a new person to the hobby, your videos are like mini "crash courses" to protect myself financially and to inform me so I at least have an idea of what I'm looking at. So thanks again and keep the videos coming!
Thanks for saving our historical coinage! I know plenty were minted in the tens or even hundreds of millions. Plenty were sacrificed in the early 1980’s that are gone forever. It even hurts to know that the most recent modern silver coins from the 1950’s and 60’s are being melted down. I’m not sure how many are gone for good; but, it doesn’t seem to have effected the value of the remaining as no real adjustments for rarity have been made of any real consequence yet. I also understand melting down slicks or culls; however, early American silver that is hardly identifiable still sells for hundreds and sometimes thousands depending on what is identifiable. So, I really do appreciate when conscientious people, like yourself, save coins from the melters. When did people stop dreaming of finding treasure? People go out with metal detectors all of the time to find old coins or jewelry. Anyway, thanks for another entertaining video!
One of the most tragic cycles of history is the absolute obliteration of so much metalwork. Stone gets reused, but there's such abundance that countless ruins survive, meanwhile metal of any sort not hidden away, from iron to gold is looted in conquests and melted down. So truly little remains compared to what was, from coins to things like the mechanical bronze statue of Hercules stolen from Constantinople for melt by the 4th crusaders.
Daniel, one of these Silver Stacker people online, who also pours, had bought Winged Liberty Dimes at a super price. I asked him if he poured those for his artwork. It made me feel better, and will make you feel better, that he told me he would never do that!
Same goes for sought after Morgans and other silver, gold coins! Will copper ones be next? It's so sad how many of these coins are melted away for money! Gone forever will be coins having a lot of/seen history and the stories behind them. Some types are very beautiful and may not be reproduced. Any one who saves them and/or passes them as heirlooms should be praised. They go beyond mere worth!
Those on average are 25$ retail .I agree with you 100% once I bought some junk were better than ones I had in my collection..however as they get melted they become rare .
I couldn’t find any of these on your site ? Lol found them I’m really looking forward to getting my 5 ounce coin thanks so much for your honestly bless you sir in the name above all names Jesus Christ Amen
History is slowly getting erased. Great job saving those! Peace dollars were my start into numismatics and I always pick these dollars up. Completing a high graded set is quite difficult on these.
I collect Peace Dollars. I have a folder for them. I will check out your website once I have saved up some money. I just purchased 1922-S Peace Dollar from my local coin shop.
Peace dollars are my favorites. Amazing finds my friend. The insanity. I think that 21 and one of those 28s’s needs to find its way into my collection. I’ll be watching the Website Daniel. Thanks again.
Have you ever made a video of your personal collection. It would be awesome to see what a dealer is into and what coins are hard for him to sell because he wants to keep them.
You’d never catch me dumping off my old silver dollars to the smelter. They are one of my all-time favorites as well. As a matter of fact, I even have a load of relatively worthless Eisenhower dollars that I absolutely love. Always on the lookout for decent priced Peace (or Morgan) dollars to add to my stash. These would be the absolute last piece of Silver that I would sell, if the spot price went way up. ASE’s, Morgan, and Peace dollars should be the foundation of every stackers stack, with an emphasis on ASE’s. You would always want the most liquid bullion to be the weight of your collection.
I recently bought a few Morgans from you and I was really impressed with the quality and the price. Sometime over the wekend I will get a list together of what I want and send it to you perhaps you can invoice me and I can either send you a check from my business or give you my credit card. Thank you very much Gary
Nice finds! Should be asking around for people wanting to part with their silver. Plenty of people hurting financially, needing some extra cash for food or whatever. Might get some nice coins like yours.
Ive been buying large quantities of peace dollars as well. I go thru mine and pull out UNC, and or dates like 21, 27, 28-s and (34 & 35 (if au ) But as far as the others, unlike some shops in different areas who have readily buyers for them, my customers in this area wont even pay me melt value so i take the rest to the refinery. Its ashame, but have to turn the money for the next deal . Did find a fabulous 28-s in a bag a few weeks ago. You mentioned about 26's, seen a lot of nicer 26-s in some recent hoards as of late as well

My Silver dealer melts coins regularly.. with turbulent markets it's bound to happen.. I bought 60 1982 Prospectors for melt I tried to save them all but $$ is the motivation.
the LCS i frequent has a nice batch of old mexican silver coins that he sets aside for me. I told him one time if there is no buyer for certain types of coins what does he do with them. He told me that for coins that are low in grade and common its a lot easier to just send them to be melted and earn some quick cash. These LCS have monthly expenses and can't afford to sit on silver or gold stashes waiting for a buyer to be interested
When I was working a movie theater job in college, some guy paid me with 2 morgan dollars. I warned him they were worth way more than their face value and he just shrugged at me lol. I exchanged them for their face value and kept the coins. Still have them to this day.
A kid did that at the bank I worked at about 10 years ago. Gave the kid $68 for all of his coins. I told him he would do better at a coin shop but he said no and would take the $68..... I have the coins to this day and 2 of them were ST GAUDENS DOUBLE EAGLES (‘22 and ‘23) I’ll never get rid of them... can’t believe I paid $20 a piece for them.
VPX4 correct... I didn’t know much about coins at the time but there were some silver eagles... ben Franklin proof coins 2 ST Gauden double eagles... JFK coins silver quarters and some mercury dimes. I was afraid I would get in trouble because I didn’t ask mgt what to do so I just gave him the money from my savings account. I thought the coins were fake until I had them tested by a local coin dealer a few months later.
I have a few Peace dollars. AN AU 22p, 23- 24- 25- & 26 BU dollars. Not sure of mint marks. I've been trying for at least 2 months to sell them. But, no takers.
Amazing save. Thanks for the video. I don't believe any American coinage should go to melt. Everything has history. Awesome 1921 score. I love the peace dollars. Thanks again Daniel.
I agree my friend,I love constitutional silver period; none of it should be melted IMHO. I want alot for my forever stack for sure but those silver dollars are always at a high price in my areas and online never has a good deal for them that I can find.
That is so awesome that you bought them! I can't believe people melt coins, you can just through them on ebay and you will definitely get melt value OR better every single time. Strange!
I was in a supermarket and this guy was at the coin star machine trying to cash in a entire maxwell house can full of quarters but it was spitting them back out so i decided to help him and right away noticed that they were all silver so i said ill take them all and the next machine was a atm so i got 241.00 worth of quarters all silver at face value.
my pap used to buy 100s of dollar worth of mercury dimes from the meltery (some bu) . people just dont know what they got or inherited stuff, they dont know kinda massive affect they will have years down the road melting all these 100 year old plus coins.

Makes me want to kick myself for not saving some of those $20 gold pieces when I paid $350 for them in the 90s

I agree no silver coin should be melted unless it is a slick and can't be identified!

Hi Daniel!! Thanks for rescuing those coins! As you already know, I despise the blatant degradation of our nation's beautiful coins by melting!!!😡😡😡
Melting down those beautiful peace dollars is crazy and having a 1921 in there is unbelievable! This guy is definitely not a coin 😂 collector!

I don't think any coin, unless it's so worn to the point where you can't see the date, should be melted, and that includes foreign Silver.

Who doesn't like Peace dollars? I love 'em!
I agree my friend,I love constitutional silver period; none of it should be melted IMHO. I want alot for my forever stack for sure but those silver dollars are always at a high price in my areas and online never has a good deal for them that I can find.
Oh, man you hit the jackpot!! Nice coins!
Hello from the great state of Michigan
yepper getting a 1921 and 1928-S peace for just over melt......is grrrreat.
I paid way over melt for the better dates. I pay based off what I can sell them for considering their current condition.
@@CoinHELPu You're a good honest dealer...i suspect many do not help the uninformed seller.
Thats why we know we can trust you not all will say something like that 👍👍
Your a True hero saving my favorite coin from being melted! Lol. Thanks for the video buddy.
So, so sad. This makes me almost want to cry. I mean who would even send such nice looking designed coins to a refinery let alone a Freakin 21.
Some people just don't care.....and that's a shame.
That is so awesome that you bought them! I can't believe people melt coins, you can just through them on ebay and you will definitely get melt value OR better every single time. Strange!
Good Stuff Daniel, thank you for all you do.We appreciate you.
Thank you
Good morning Daniel, I'm looking at the peace dollars on your website now.
I don't know what I think about this. I would have been tempted to pay them more than face. He obviously needed the money.
@@CoinHELPu I live in Baltimore and he was a well known junkie in my neighborhood and i know he stole them.
Some people don't realize what they have or just don't care. SAD.
Thanks for Sharing my friend!
I thought it was against the Law to melt down US coins.
Only cents and nickels
CoinHELPu did not know that. Thanks buddy
my pap used to buy 100s of dollar worth of mercury dimes from the meltery (some bu) . people just dont know what they got or inherited stuff, they dont know kinda massive affect they will have years down the road melting all these 100 year old plus coins.
THANK YOU!!! GREAT JOB 👍
I wonder if these are the same Peace Dollars that Daniel sold me last year. 🤔
😆 I still have them!
This was more than two years ago I believe.
Saving history. 👈 👍🇺🇸👍
YOU ARE THE MAN !! thank you for saving those Peace Dollars my favorite coin by far
Good Grief!, I'll be more than happy to buy them 🤑at one time I had a Complete Collection. I Love Peace Dollar Design ✔️
That's unusual though, usually people think coins like that are worth a LOT because they're old and silver.
