2021 Triumph Trident 660 Review | MC Commute

- Triumph Motorcycles returns to the basics with its beautifully styled 2021 Trident 660 ($8,095 as tested). A fresh entry into Triumph’s roadster line-up, the Trident naked bike fills the void left by the original Street Triple 675- a fun and affordable motorcycle that punched above its weight. However with tighter packaging, the Trident focuses on new riders and folks looking for a fashionable yet functional urban street bike.
--
Seated at the controls, the Trident offers a slim and well proportioned riding position. The one-piece saddle is nice and low and it proves a very easy bike to straddle, even for shorter folks. There’s also room for a passenger if a friend wants to tag along. The handlebar bend is neutral and well-suited for general riding. However, it is a tad narrow for our tastes.
Thumb the starter button and the 660cc Triple whirls to live with its customary but still sweet melody. Triumph’s been building this engine configuration for over 15 years and we remain big fans of its soul and character. One gripe: The engine has moderate vibration at highway cruising speed in top gear.
A tasteful round-face color dash display keeps tabs on the bike’s vitals and does a great job of balancing classic style and modern technology. Five button switch gear lets you navigate through vehicle settings. It would have been nice if Triumph included an ambient air temperature readout though. Crisp LED lighting helps the Triumph rider stand out and we appreciate how the license plate bracket is mounted neatly to the swingarm, tidying up the rear end.
Through the city, the Trident performs well with 93% of its peak torque (43 pound-feet) available from 3,500 rpm. This along with a low first gear, and responsive, yet easy squeezing clutch lever make zipping between stop lights fun. Horsepower-wise the 660 delivers 72 ponies at 10,200 rpm. But we’d be lying if we didn’t say the engine peters out a bit early up top. Fuel mileage-wise we record a 39.2 mpg average. This nets a range of around 148-miles based on the smallish capacity of the 3.8-gallon tank.
Maintenance-wise, after the initial 600-mile service, the Trident goes 10,000 miles or a year between engine oil and filter changes. Valve adjustment and air filter service is recommended at 20,000 mile intervals.
Riders can choose between Road and Rain riding modes. New riders will likely appreciate the “Rain” setting, as it makes the motorcycle easier to ride and get acclimated to. The Road setting offers accurate throttle responsive, however it is a tad muted. Manually defeatable traction control is also standard, however the engine’s powerband is so friendly that TC is unnecessary. Still, it’s nice to know that it comes with this feature at its price point.
Despite weighing 417-pounds when topped off with fuel, in motion the Trident feels much lighter. Steering is ultra-responsive which makes it easy to put the bike exactly where you want. Suspension action is balanced and offers above average ride quality. Heavier folks will occasionally feel some jolts when hitting big bumps at speed, but we were generally impressed with the well-rounded performance of the suspension, especially in the twisties. The OE-fitted Michelin Road 5 tires are another nice touch and perform well.
Despite the use of less expensive slide-type brake caliper hardware, the Trident’s anchors are surprisingly adept at shedding speed. Braking feel is a clear highlight and always-on ABS takes the worry out of using the brakes aggressively regardless if you’re a new or more experienced rider.
Whether you’re a new rider, or someone seeking a second bike for urban rides, the Trident 660 ticks a lot of boxes. Not only is it priced right, but it rides as well as it looks. Consider its lofty service intervals and pleasing fit and finish, and there are plenty of reasons why you need a Triumph in the garage.

Adam's style of reviewing bikes is great. Straight to the point and you get tons of information.
Very nice. Thanks for the comment and for watching this video.
u sure he doesnt want to tell you where it came from?
Adam's hairstyle is great too
@@josebarba7703 apparently there is a town named hinkley in Thailand!
Hahaha
Adam is definitely my favourite MC commute reviewer ! Dude really knows his stuff . Great review as always 🤙🏻
Sounds ridiculous....REALLY!!!
Maybe we could all dumb it down and say it's absolutely easy to review a motorcycle while you're riding it. I like and respect his passion. Thanks Adam! Keep up the good work.
@@zero11010 I have to agree with that. I also have a hard time listening to him speaking so slowly and dragging the words out sometimes. Like in this video when he said RPM but it was dragged to R..........P............M. Usually i play his videos at 1.25x speed and then he sounds almost normal.
Adam's reviews always answer my question of, " Can I be an adult hooligan on this bike?" The answer is always yes when he reviews bikes.
Adam is one of the best reviewers on RUclips. I was impressed the first time I heard him reviewing a yellow Ducati Scrambler quite a few years ago. This bike is very tempting.
Thanks Adam for another great review. I like that you're very knowledgeable, but especially offering a practical perspective rather than just sounding off the spec sheet. Very Inspiring.
This is so refreshing. Basic and good. Really makes you question all the farkles dumped into new biikes.
Exactly. I just want a pretty engine with wheels. I don't need the excess
Aftermarket mods be crying if the bike works from the get go... Mt 07 ha d retarded forks and still have.
@@ktkace the forks on MT-07 are perfectly fine for an average street riding experience for a beginner/less experienced rider or for some normal street riding
but as always this paint is extra couple hundred bucks. this paint being the 'farkelest'. theres like 3. basic one is 8195. this an another- couple hundred more. + for heated grips, + for quik-shifter. + + + whats new.
@@italkgory99 they’re really not. It’s overly soft and tends to lift the front. That could easily get an inexperienced rider in trouble.
Excellent job reviewing this bike Adam. I mean it, this is some of your best work. Your experience with past bikes and their power plants is insightful and needed. You and Michael Neevse are the best in this business no doubt.
I like this guy's review, he tells all you need to know and leaves nothing out. You can tell, this is a very experienced rider. This review, among others, led me to triumph dealer in Oxfordshire (UK). I traded in my 2019 street twin, which was a good bike. But after 3yrs, I wanted something lighter, a bit more flickable, with a few more revs. No regrets, having a blast. 👍
Was waiting for this commute for months now and glad that finally this dropped! Great work as always @adam and team MC Commute🤩
What a great quality of review, congratulations to the entire team and thank you very much for answering my question; greetings from Mexico 🇲🇽.
Hands down the best reviewer on YOU TUBE..NO BS..keep em coming Mr Waheed!!
First-time listener/watcher - outstanding !
Great practical content ... and the host is super knowlegable.
Has become go-to standard for reviews - 👍👍 He knows what he's talking about
As always, an awesome review from Adam. I love this mc commute's, and i love this bike 👌
one of your best presentations, keep up with the good work
Subscribed straight on
The best review for those who really want deep and honest info...
Possibly the best bike in this class, with its excellent road manners. Adam is truly a top notch reviewer who is extremely informative & who is also able to wring out every bit of performance out of a bike. Adam you definitely are somewhat of a daredevil riding. Take care bro.😏
Excellent review. Very thorough and detailed!
What a great thorough review, better than the rest. Seems like a fun bike.
One of the best reviews channels so far!
You can hear the gentleman's genuine astonishment at the sight of the "sick" Bobcat, unfiltered vlogging
Excellent review brother, fair reflection of the bike, and some good shots, I love how calm you are 👍
Awesome review and great ride through some twisties!
Still knocking out great stuff Adam & crew - The motorcycle Sage of SoCal.
That canyon section looked cool, no cars and just one Bobcat, really enjoy your reviews from Australia.
It's so cool to see roads I ride in these MC commutes. Good ol Palomar mtn. Cool 🏍
You got me again in the twisties. You let me know why I should like this bike!
The styling kind of reminds me of the Cagiva Planet.. one of my dream bikes back in the day.. Thanks for the great review Adam. I've always been a fan.. keep up the great work and stay safe! 🤙
You're review is super informative as compared to other providers! 😉👊🏿
great review - these naked bikes look like a lot of fun !
I just like how Adam always gives the bikes a flogging with great information on the motorcycle he is riding always a great review from Adam
The fact you casually blitz LA's canyons while being able to talk about the facts of a bike like this is one of the most impressive things I've ever seen tbh
I believe he is in San Diego not Los Angeles. Big big difference
I love this video/review. Positive, super nice riding through the twisty roads. Information conveyed in a positive note with exciting footage and yet all the information you want a need rather than listed info and flaw finding boring reviews. I thought I would need an after market exhaust to make this bike sound nice but seems it sounds pretty aggressive and inspiring as is if you ride it hard. Cheers
Very good review Adam. So many times folks need to say either I like the bike or do not. It is clear you like the bike.👍🏻
Motorcycle review with a bit of Sir David Attenborough thrown in..."that Bobcat was sick..."
This guy rips! Keep ahead of everyone else. 🤘🏻
You're the only person who has mentioned the vibration on this motorcycle and one of the very few the mentioned the throttle lag. Thank you for being honest!
Great review!
Nice tuque ya beatnik! Thanks for the review.
I have just watched this again. Easily the best review of this bike on here.
Adam's review and his hairstyles have delivered yet again. Well wishes 😀👍
WTF you gay or someshit?
Great Road test and Review... :-D
I can't stop watching this video! I will never ride it like you! It was sold to me as a beginner bike! This video is my favorite so far! You ride like a fricken Rossi! Leave my scooter alone man, my first bike, if my wife sees this I'm done!
I told her it was just a big scooter.
Hey Adam. I've been watching your vids for ages. Would there be any chance of doing a low seat height shootout or could you give your opinion on which ones are best? I've got some physical problems which mean I need a really comfy, low seat bike thats easy to flat foot. So far I've been looking at an Indian scout and a Triumph Speedmaster. I've had big sportbikes for many years but now I have to change I would love to hear your opinion since you have a lot of experience and you seem very good at judging and indepth reviews on bikes.
Love the vids mate.
Just watched this for a third time as I am considering selling my SCR950 and KTM 390 Duke to get one. I don't need two bikes. Just the one plus my Aerox 155 scooter.
Without doubt, this is the best review on this bike on RUclips. And it's by the best reviewer.
I am considering their reviews as the most honest and impartial you can find on the internet. Well done and big thank you as I made my mind swapping cruiser for a lighter but not less powerfull motorcycle. BTW I am a girl, 5.2"...not an easy task 😊
Plenty of test rides to do but I narrowed it down just because I watched your reviews. 👍😉
Take note; that's what the bike looks like with the stock frame sliders on it. Probably didn't even notice them, they blend right in. Love this bike!
I never paid Triumph any mind. I liked them but not enough to really consider one as a personal bike.
My partner bought a 2015 Speedmaster and I'm now in love. Probably the best all around bike I've ever ridden and now I'm obsessed.
Might check this bad boy out as my next bike. She is a LOOKER.
They make some really fun rides with nice sounds. This and the Tiger 660 are quite appealing.
Just rode a demo. It's VERY good. I tried to buy the demo but they wouldn't let me. Definitely getting one.
Good review. I just bought a new Trident 660 identical to 38:19 38:19 the one tested here. So far I really like the bike. I’m new to street riding - I rode off-road motorcycles all my life till about 5 years ago at which time I sold my KTM 450 EXC and purchased a mountain bike. I’m very short (5’4”) and swinging a leg over that tall dirt bike became nearly impossible. The Trident truly is a good beginner bike - it is east for me to mount and dismount, and the throttle makes it easy to roll on the power, but I think the real genius of this bike is that it will serve the owner well beyond the initial learning stages. It may not be the most powerful bike among its peer group, but it will haul the mail if you twist the throttle and let it wind up a bit. And, as noted by the reviewer, the suspension is good. I haven’t ridden an MT-07, BUT I have checked out the fork on an MT-07 for sale at my local Yamaha dealer and the fork on that motorcycle is like a pogo stick - very springy. Some reviewers rate the MT-07 better than the Trident. They must be able to look way past the suspension shortcomings of the MT-07 to arrive at that conclusion. In any event, I enjoyed the review. I think it was very fair for this bike. Thanks!
i liked the review, like also how you spot a bobcat and say, "He's huge" then proceed to stop the bike to show us the buttons on the bars with a huge bobcat right behind you!
As good as the MT-07 is for the money I'd have to go with this Trident if I were to buy one on value, and it helps that it looks a lot better than the Yammy. Money no object, the Aprilia 660 Tuono.
Ahhhh why didn't anyone asks this or the CB650R? I remember him liking that bike and it seems like the most direct competitor.
The CB costs a grand more
@@shahzebnasir4692an it's worth it
@@cecilotto504why is it worth it? Other than the extra 10hp no one actually needs on the street
Nice! That’s quite the “Commute” you have ! 😉
Love this bike ♥
What did you think of the seat upholstery? Some people are saying it’s just different. Excellent review.
I like this little bike , some bar end mirrors would look good on it. I need a Triumph Speed Twin though.
I like and look forward to Adam's reviews. He does scare me a bit with the filtering at speed. I know that the camera makes this look more dicey than it is but I still wince a bit. He obviously has a veteran's comfort level with it that I might never develop were it even legal in NJ. Or maybe the level of driver skill is higher in CA? Too many NJ drivers do the most ridiculous unpredictable things. I'd split up to a light when everyone is stopped but I'm not sure I'd ever just weave through traffic. My $.02
I’m a new rider in CA and I split lanes when cars are fully stopped, OR when they are like 30 MPH or less. That’s my limit.
@grumpysquid same
It’s a hit or miss with drivers in CA. He’s in a very suburban part of Orange County where people are slower and more polite. If he were in the urban sprawl of Los Angeles he might tone it down a tad.
In my experience legal lane splitting MAKES UNAWARE DRIVERS MORE AWARE... therefore better....
After a cpl times of catching that overrev right in your ear due to inattention, it's snaps people to reality....
You have no idea how bad I wanted to see you review this bike. Test ride this week it’s in my top five it’s time to pull the trigger on a new bike and this style/size is my Goldilocks zone. Can’t wait
It is a great bike. Luv it. All good things to say on my 1st 300 miles. One word of caution. If you ride on crap rodes that rear suspension will tear your ass up. It is great from the factory on nice roads but at 5 foot 10 and 200 lbs. I feel every bump. I will soften up dat rear suspension after I get more saddle time in. The 3 banger is a hoot.
So would you say this is a beginner bike or a good 2nd bike?
God, I love your videos! You sold that bike for them and they don't even know it!
Excellent review. I usually watch yours at x1.5 speed because of the slower speech pattern. The lane splitting makes me nervous lol.
In your opinion which models are the closest competitors to this? Who is this bike ideal for?
Definitely one of his best reviews and one of the BEST bike reviews of any channel I have seen in a very long time!
Gorgeous bike. Definitely the best color scheme.
Looks awesome would love that exact design but in a bigger bike.
Adam always rides the piss out of these bikes, with no biased review.
You give great reviews. I liked your livewire review a lot. Speaking of livewire. I’m a new rider. And I was hellbent on getting the new livewire one which is significantly cheaper than the Harley livewire. But still very expensive. Now I I see this bike and its price. It’s performance and aesthetics and it really makes me rethink the livewire option. I know these are totally different bikes. Electric vs petrol. Shifting vs no shifting. Would you be happy on this over the livewire. I know that is a tough question as they are totally different. But since you have ridden both would like to hear your thoughts on this. Thanks brother.
the bike is awesome being a limited outlet its kinda outa reach in parts of the country but when my wife gets to be a more seasoned rider I'll travel for it
Great review, may I ask where you got your 72 bhp figure from? Is that from the wheel as I’ve seen 80 bhp on the Triumph website. Thank you for your time & effort bringing us this review.
I believe it produces 72hp at the rear wheel when dyno tested.
Trident 660 and BMW F900R are very close in price in Germany. I’m thinking in getting one of those for city riding and long trips on weekends with my partner. Which one would you recommend and why?
I would like to see comparisons between Kawasaki Concourse 1400 & Yamaha FJR 1300 on your MC Commute. I would like to know your opinion if it’s still worth buying such big & heavy motorcycle or would you recommend others for work commute & weekend fun with the wife.
what would you suggest between Beneli 600i and triumph trident 660 ?
What a beauty
Carving canyons on a work day, im so jealous
That's him at work 😁 Lucky guy.
4 sec 0-60 & +120 mph top speed is definitely fast! Its when your 0-60 is over 6 sec and your topping out under 100 mph that you can consider your bike "slow" . This is a stock tuned bike as well mind you, so theres clear potential for a hearty extra 20 mph give or take on the top end. Im heavily considering this for my first brand new bike, my old CB250 has finally gotten long in the tooth for me. Cant decide if I want this, a moto guzzi V7, or a CB650. The Honda is the most modern, the Guzzi is timeless looking, the trident seems like the perfect mix of everything though!
Oh!...I love it.
It was my understanding the 660 has a longer stroke and narrower bore to get low end power at the cost of higher rpm power. What is correct ?
are you guys going to be doing the tiger?
Noticed that you may be using trail breaking..did I notice correctly? Thanks
the Trident's vibes are like "a best friend who always leaves the toilet seat up"😂😂😂 Awesome review as always, Adam and love the humour!
His voice sounds like Adams from workaholics, LOL. Love it.
I have one and often have to filter around in tricky traffic here in France. After my Ducati scramble 800r this has less character but is less of a furnace to sit on, easier throttle control and better brakes tyres and handling
Such a beautiful motorcycle.
Truly, the most beautiful bike I've seen so far. Great mix of modern design with a classic touch. Eat your heart out KTM and Japanese bike manufacturers.
Vitpilen says hi but I'm not digging the nonexistent tank grip if the 401 is any representative of the registration of its bigger bro...
Anyone know what gloves he's wearing? They look super comfortable.
i wanna give an extra like for the BobCat!!
Fine, Triumph. You win. Just take my money already!
Put in the order in March. ETA late June/early July. Coming of a Z250SL. Can’t wait.
"Monkey Air"? Moniker? Love your reviews Adam, always hoped to run into you on the mountain.
Suzuki, Honda. Yamaha, and Kawasaki are on every corner. This triumph is unique, limited, and exclusive. Plus you but the 3 cyclinder, torque and high rev horsepower!
I love the video, as I always do of any and all of your work. What I wonder about this bike is this: Why would I buy this over a lightly used 675 Speed?
Looks and more usable power curve with low down torque
almost halfway into the review and not a single mention of MT-09 whaaat? judging the bike on its own merits? Brilliant review by the best in the business.
You mean mt07
Is the big Triumph logo a decal that can be removed or is it under the clear coat ? I love the matte black but the big logo is just to much for me!
Apparently it's under the clear coat, but the other black model(and the white one) has a much smaller logo, which I prefer.
If my ride to work was like this I would come out of retirement!
✝
Where did you do this video at? Looks familiar
Just picked up a used bike in the 7k range and this is the only bike I kinda wished I waited for before pulling the trigger, I really expected this to take longer to go from reveal to dealer’s floors...
Would love to see a 2021 Superbike Drag Race like the one back in 2015, R1M, Panigale V4S/R, BMW S1000RR Pro or a M1000RR, New ZX10R , Aprilia RSV4 Factory and anything else
Wow. Adam is in character with that hairdo. He should become a method actor!
i liked how he spotted a bobcat on the mountain while hauling ass thru a canyon......i never saw it but yeah anything nature is pretty badass...they live in a whole different world.....we focus about what bike to get next and he is just focused on getting dinner for tonight......trident looks pretty nice but maybe not for longer rides, commuter bike around town, short trips thru canyon........
I was genuinely shocked at how tiny these are whem I threw my leg over one. It's a hell of a good looking bike in the flesh too.
Edit:
Also, the amount of colour options is great. Really makes me extra annoyed that the Speed Triple is only in black or grey.
Great to see you're in Vista/Fallbrook area. I couldn't see the bobcat though.
Nice bike. My local Triumph dealer says they're fresh out of the Trident. Must be a hot seller.
As for the Suzuki GSX-S750, I suspect they will have a complete redesign within the next year, along the lines of the newly-redesigned GSX-S1000.
