It's one thing to not get Jackass at the start, but the other 2 explain to Woody that it's about their charisma over & over & he still doesn't get it.
I heard Knoxville explain it once, there are people that are fearless & do crazy shit way more extreme than Jackass, but the thing that makes Jackass special is that these aren't extreme dudes, they are pretty normal & are as terrified to do these stunts as most normal people would be. A lot of the laughs come from the genuine fear of cast.
I think it's like a mix of that and the "stunts".
Their charisma is definetly golden but they need some good stunts to back it up with.
Now back then there wasn' that much competition for dumb/disgusting stunts, maybe homevideo TV shows, so they had that going and the chemistry between the cast sold it.
If you'd reboot it now, you'd need atleast the same charisma or more. For the stunts I believe that you'd have to maximise the disgusting side of it. As Woody said, there are a lot of people doing/failing at extreme things and that's funny, but (next to) nobody is gonna lunch himself in a porta-potty. The more corporate route would be making more extreme versions of viral videos.
But most of it really depends on the cast's chemistry

Every special they did at least one had to sit out filming because they were in full body casts or wheelchairs from broken spines and necks. I always the dudesons were equal to if not more hardcore than jackass because yeah jackass had production value but that also came with a bunch of safety and backups if shit went too wrong

I can confirm after watching multiple podcasts with several different members of the jackass crew, talking about this specific stunt, that was a real used porta potty. That was real shit and piss. None of it was fake in any way. It wasn’t watered down dog shit. It wasn’t smushed up snickers bars. It was legit porta John content.
