Hey Mike, I’m a Cambodian American and long time fan of your channels. Just wanted to thank you for highlighting Cambodian cuisine so well in this video. Like you said, Cambodia has a longer history than its surrounding countries, but gets overshadowed because we had lost a lot of our deep history after the genocide. Cambodia is still struggling as a country. I thought your video did our cuisine and country justice. It had made me so proud. Thank you Mike!!

Massive genocide in the 70’s. The Khmer Rouge killed millions & destroyed historical monuments. My grandparents, mom, & her siblings lives through that before fleeing to Thailand and eventually immigrating to the USA in the 80’s. But not without war wounds, physical & mental

Everyone does it here in Cambodia, noodle shop owners, I mean. My uncle runs an exact same shop and he does it too. Even the breakfast lady at my school.

😂all of south and south east asia is pretty much like that. Its actually hilarious, the only rule on the road is if u find a space take it. Sometimes you'll see traffic police but I've seen them just up and leave during heavy traffic.

When I was in Vietnam, one day we took a road trip in a jeep from Can Tho .. stopped at the border and turned back .. so .. I suppose I can I SAW Cambodia :)

agreed, and not just the virus going around but many other things like food poisoning. i took my kids to cambodia and they came home very sick so be safe! 👍
Thank you for acknowledging Cambodia’s food as the OG of southeast Asian food culture. Originally, Cambodians used to eat very spicy food like Thailand but as the new generation of Khmer grew up they no longer want to learn or attempt to cook or make traditional food like in the past and prefer easier meals and refrain from cooking with spices and prefer sugar and sweetness above all else. Before there was no such thing as diabetes in Cambodia but now one third of the population are diabetic because they love every meal with sugar.
I’m very glad I grew up woth a grandmother and mother who knows how to cook traditional Khmer dishes full of great flavours and nothing beats original Khmer food. Cambodian food takes a long time to prepare but when you get to eat it it’s so worth it and there’s nothing quite like it.
Just walk at a consistent pace! Dont stop or hesitate and motorcycles will just drive around you. Its counterintuitive but it works!
That is key when visiting other countries and dealing with their traffic. Do what the locals do, because that is what the locals are used to.
I figured that out in about 5 minutes when I got to the middle east.
I've been binge watching all your videos! Since moving abroad to Japan I have met a variety of people from all over the world, so it makes watching your videos so much more exciting because I can talk to them about their local food and culture! Thankyou!!!!

honestly the traffic in Phnom penh/ cambodia in generel is much better and way more relaxed than for example bangkok or hanoi or saigon, where it's just insane.

I don't know if it's a Northern English thing but my parents always referred to the chicken's butt as _"the parson's nose"_ which often gets some weird looks in shops if I ask them to make sure my roast chicken has the parson's nose included, although some shop keepers do know the term... :)
Chicken butt is actually very very delicious. It’s just not something you see everyday. I’ve had it as yakitori in Japan and well as in Taiwan. It’s very common street food in these places.
Simon B Aussie here and we (my family) have always called it the parsons nose or popes nose! It’s an older generation term (I am only 38)

Man seeing that kid gets me inspired a lot because he's probably one of a few who defines all logic of just wanting to work at any age.
Most of the kids working the streets in PP don't really want to. They would rather be in school or playing, but the average wages in Cambodia mean that when you can walk, you go to work.

i still maintain to this day the best noodles i ever had in my life were in Cambodia. Mikey's reaction first time eating noodles there didn't surprise me at all. When he ordered a second bowl I was like yup he knows.

I'm a Cambodian America, however I haven't been there since 2001. Seeing the change in 19 years is so wild to me. Seeing you eat so many familiar food to me makes me nostalgic and happy. But the pronunciation of “Khmer” is not like “Kha-meer”, but rather “Kh-mai”, mai being said just like “my” 😊

The Pork Rice usually comes with a small bowl 🥣 of soup. Without a soup on the side, I would feel dry for my rice. So it's a must for me and the taste would be 2 times better. I Miss Cambodia 🇰🇭 already.
