The Fall and Rise of No Man's Sky

- Опубликовано: 22 авг 2020
- No Man’s Sky certainly seems to have started out as a project that was way over Hello Games’ heads, and perhaps wasn’t meant to grow into the popularity typhoon that it became leading up to launch, but the great irony of it all is that, had it not launched in such a big way and made so much money upfront, it would have been much harder for the team to remain focused on developing it into the grander experience it was meant to be.
While the hype train was definitely bigger than what Hello Games probably expected, that train ultimately paved the way for them to really make the game great anyway. Now, if you were to ask what people think of the game, you will probably get mixed results depending on who you talk to. But if you talk to anyone that has played it within the last year or so, you’re far more likely to get a favorable opinion from that person than somebody who bought it at launch. It’s true that No Man’s Sky truly bundled it’s launch, but if you ever need to be reminded that bad situations can be turned around with enough work, all you have to do is look at the game now.
What started as a cautionary tale about over-promising has, through the hard work of Hello Games, become a story of pure redemption. While it’s always best to avoid the problem of under-delivering on your game, Hello Games, through it all, has managed to do the very next best thing. - Игры
I bought this at launch was unimpressed and shelved it. Started playing it again two days ago. Now blown away.

I Absolutely agree. Took time off to let them update it and now it’s one of the best games ever made in my eyes.
Wait they actually redeemed themselves? Fuck I might buy this.
I just got it in the same boat its pretty awesome now

Everyone seems to have not heard/forgotten that hello games studio was flooded and destroyed very close to their release date for no mans sky. I guarantee this had a negative impact on the version of the game we got at launch. These people rose from the ashes like a glorious Phoenix.

They will fix the bugs and glitches no doubt, but even then Cyberpuke still under delivers to what they promised. And no I don't ever seem them improving/changing the game enough to make it feel like a different experience, and that's what NMS did, its literally a different game now.
If the devs are given the time and love, I think they can change the game
I've played NMS from launch. It quickly became my go-to relaxation and exploration game, whatever its flaws at the time. Every update since has made the game even more appealing, but none more so than the move to VR.
My gAmEr dream is to play NMS VR
Such a complete port
Its ugly in vr. Sorry. 5-10 years vr Will be great
@@timersej9 That hasn't been my experience, but results - and tastes - may vary.
@@AretaicGames Did I like No Man's Sky when it was launched? Yes.
I played it for 20 hours. I realized, it was fun and chill for 15-20 hours. After that, it's just repetitive.
20 hours of fun for $60. Was the game worth it at that time? I think so. There's a very simple reason - I played many $60 games that had 8-12 hrs of story. I don't play those game after completing the story. Considering the time factor, it was absolutely OK.
The second thing, the awe factor, it was incredible even after playing it for 20 hours. The huge scale of the universe and the planets never seem not to amaze.
Still, it was never a complete game - I knew that. However, after playing the current version of No Man's Sky, it's more than just a game for me. The game still has the same aesthetics and feel from when it was released. It's just nostalgic for me, even though it's just been 4 years.
I tried the game again in 2019, after the initial 2016 20 hours, and it was good (Beyond). I again tried it in Aug 2020 and it's just almost perfect. Not as a game but as an experience for someome who liked (not loved) No Man's Sky when it was released.
@@robertonome2448 I've spent 178 hours in NMSVR on the Ps4. Yes it looks like a universe simulation from Spy Kids 3's idea of VR. But if you can accept that VR on current gen looks like a ps2 game and remember that the headset is like a portal into a macro universe you will have fun. Also The controls on both ps4 and pc Vr in no mans sky is amazing!!! Once you get the hand of it it's like a dance 💃
I played this on launch. And even though the game was not even close to what it is today, it still owns one of the most memorable gaming moments in history for me. You fix your broken down ship, take off into space and turn around to see the planet you were just stranded on. All in real time. Kudos to the whole HG team because they didn't give in to the hate and negativity. All free updates. Never asking for a dime. And while one can say "well they promised certain things that weren't there so it should be free" . This is false because while yes they added things to the game that weren't there but they also over delivered by adding features that were never in their initial marketing. A wonderful comeback story!
How is that false? They made an incredibly large amount of money due to misleading customers, giving false advertising for the product being sold and selling it at the price point of AAA titles.
Sean Murray told so many lies.. That can't be so easily forgiven.
@@addictedtoRS yeah but i feel like he has more than made up for it
One of the best games of this generation. I thank the idiots who said they wouldn't give NMS a 2nd chance ("iT's ToO lAtE nOw"), as I bought this game for super cheap right after the "NEXT" update and it only got better since.
Why is it to late. I bought the game at launch shelved it and waited for it to get better as promised. Started playing it again two weeks ago.
Dale drake I bought it a few days ago and it’s really interesting game. Can’t wait to get some better gear and galaxies with actual flora and fauna instead of current barren wastelands
I'm deeply considering buying this right now, is it worth it?
@@bahaatamer1245 if you like exploring gathering resources and building bases then definetely this game is one of my favourites
no one with the minimum understanding of what s on the space game genre market, would say that, just because one loves runescape, doesn t need to go around like a headless chicken saying its the best game ever. and yes, lets all support a company that literally used false advertisement and deception at maximum, and then complain when companies exploit the consumer.
This made rewatch internet historians video on hello games redemption, it still makes me really happy that they weren't just some other dev who let their game fail.
I remember getting a review copy of this game the day before it launched and warp drive glitching my way to the centre on the galaxy 2 days after it released and being severely disappointed. When I booted it up for the first time since then a month back I was overwhelmed with how much it had changed and it’s become a regular hobby now.

And some "special" people still act like its literally the same game as when it come out. Ignoring all logic and common sense.
In some major aspects it still is. The planets are just not fun to explore after a while. If you look at the No Man's Sky trailer's you'll see how beautiful the looks compared to now even. To some people like myself the misleading marketing killed it.
Logic and common sense are rarities in society this year.
@@inoc6661 don't let the mistakes of the past, cloud all views of the future
@@inoc6661 yeah i have to disagree. I have found a planet that looks similar to the trailer 100%, i have discovered about 100 planets now and they are literally all different. the only ones that blend together are the acid/toxic ones which are still different
@@user-ec6ej4dp6t I don't think you have. All the planets in the trailers were scripted, meaning they were hand made for the most part. Also the amount of vegetation in the trailers is ridiculous when you compare it to the game even now. And I haven't seen Dinosaurs, desert planets + the large snake creature. Its laughable that people deny the fact that the trailers look so much better.
I think NMS deserves game of the year, not because it is the best game, but because hello games deserves that level of a reward for turning what they had, into one of the most enjoyable experiences you can have, through no more than never giving up on the dream. NMS is a great game, and it seems it is just going to keep getting better. Thank you hello games, and all the players who kept the dream alive
Old games can't be game of the year
Well, they got Best Ongoing Game for the Game Awards (2020), so a pretty close second! They definitely deserve the recognition for their tireless, amazing efforts
It's one of the best comeback stories in videogame history. I admit tho, that incredible 70's sci-fi art style we saw in the original trailers was never again replicated by Hello Games. That atmosphere was so unique.
Its for better tho, since not many people liked that kinda aesthetic such as myself
Recently bought the game and I couldn’t be more satisfied. Super relaxing and fun game to play alone or with friends and awesome community. I would 100% recommend this game to anyone looking for something kinda different
There's going to be a No Man's Sky 5 before Star Citizen is released
Do you mean Scam Citizen?
@@fuguthefish
More than 1 million people play it. How is it a scam?
@@emanueldelacruz1101 Lmao. If 1 billion people would fall for that scam it still would be a scam. :))) They are misleading people into buying a game that will never exist.
I kinda wish that people would quit rejoicing in other people's failures. Star Citizen will be just as ambitious as NMS was/is. It's supposed to be a full "universe simulator," like Elite Dangerous but from planet-to-space. They've missed deadlines and are behind schedule, yes. But the idea behind the game absolute deserves support. Space nerds and sci-fi buffs are dying for a game like this, and it's very ahead of its time. It deserves caution, sure, but lashing out and hoping that it fails only increases everyone's negativity.
@@OreoGamingGeek Having a nice idea doesn't make it less incompetence-driven and transformed into a cash grab aka scam. No support for incompetent people, for scammers and liars.
Funny how some people are still unimpressed. I've been with this game since day one. Definitely was disappointed at launch and it got shelved for a long time. Then I started coming back around Atlas Rises and was like, what.... and this last year I've been completely blown away. No matter what anyone says, as far as survival/exploration/base building games go, this one certainly ranks up with the best of them. Period. The cross-play update sealed the deal for me. My wife and I play on PC and PS4, and now we can actually work together and explore together. If you don't like this type of game, you won't like NMS. But I think it is worth every penny now.
Pity this video was made a month before Origins update launched.
Some friends at work are group playing, so I thought I'd take a look. Mind blown! Keep the updates coming!
@Hello Games can I buy a T shirt or skins or something to throw a few more bucks your way?

I thought I knew the majority of this game, but I don't even know the beginning. You taught me new structures, aircrafts, and ruins in this video. Good job!
I bought this game at launch and still loved it for what it was despite everyone's disappointment. I knew it was a huge project and I am so happy to see continual support as I have been playing on and off during the life of the game.
I've had this game for months and I still play it every now and then and I always have something to do. I really love this game
Sean showed how games companies shouldn’t just damage control but actually fix it
Been playing No Man's Sky since Foundation Update (my uncle had a copy and I saw him watching a trailer. It looked fun so I played it on PS4. I fell in love instantly. I still play to this day.
Great video. You carry a tone very similar to that of a news anchor carrying out an investigation on a company under fire lol. I'm subscribed.
Reached over 200+ Hours in only a month after I picked this up. It's a total dream, on and off VR.

I am almost 50 now. I was there when DooM 1 launched and played the original system shock. After 30 years of gaming i can say. No man's sky is the most immersive game to date, and has an awesome community. May the power of Hirk be with you all ;-)
I'd say it deserved a more praise than you gave it, but nice to see channels giving it some attention. :)
proud to say I loved it since day 1.
It's been quite the journey to see it evolve over time. HG have done wonders for the game.
I asked my friends about this game about a month ago, they said it was trash and not to play it, I did so anyways cause it is on Xbox game pass and it is amazing. I love it.

I brought this game two weeks ago. So glad I found it late and missed all this fuss. Love it!
@el SM I’m female (lol). YES, It’s fantastic fun. I’m playing it in VR. If you decide to get it read about the game on the game website first. I made the mistake of just starting without a review of the game site and spend a lot of time trying to figure what to do and what the game is really about. I’m finally getting to challenging missions and fully understanding the gameplay. It’s a very intelligent game. If you like sci-fi, choose your own adventure stories/games and strategic games you’ll love this one. Totally worth it. I may even play in multiplayer soon.

yes, its a nice game, not for everyone tho, for most of the game you have to set your own goals, i like that freedom, you have the tools, and can go where you want, im just waiting for next update to get another friend on it and dive on all the content i havent played yet.
I agree I got it early was very confused never got off the ground and now I am recently playing it now and love it so much. They did a great job

I'ma have to give it another try. I played it off and on for about 6 months when I got it at launch. It was very repetitive at that point. My roommate has been playing it recently tho and he likes it so, guess it's time I get back in there!
You mentioned that they had made money because of which they were focused to improve it. If they didn't had that money, it'll be another tragedy. I absolutely agree!
However, you should have also mentioned that Hello Games reputation among the people has also improved drastically. They have made sure bigger studios make considerable effort to improve a game if they had bad launches and not just leave them.
Everyone make mistakes. We usually don't know the struggles. The only stories we are inspired by are the ones that go from bad, beaten down and ignored to greatness.
I think Hello Games are happier that they had one of the worst launches and games in the history of an entertainment product. I'm pretty sure, the next game they make will be outstanding.
P.S.: I bought the game at launch.
Someday they will make an update about building a colony to a planet of your choice and play like like sim city. I will buy it even it went up to $60.
No Man’s Sky is something a lot of companies should take note cause they never give up and made their game better as time went one even better fixed it....
Returning to this to get hope for cyberpunk 2077😭
Same. It's all up to CDPR, but I hold out hope that they'll do it some justice. If NMS can win Best Ongoing Game in 2020 with a smaller dev crew, Cyberpunk 2077 definitely has hope for redemption!

I bought it at launch and got fed up of the bugs so put it down for a while but it's one of those games I keep coming back too.
Just found this game last week and I'm already hours into it. This is going to suck up all my spare time!
The video omits the fact that Hello games cut off all communication for months after launch, causing an uproar among gamers that rightfully thought the game was going to be abandoned in its catastrophic launch state.
Sean has told the reason in an interview some years ago. They went sient because he knew/thought that nobody would believe anything they said at that point and that actions matter more than words.
theJonzu it was probably a botched attempt at damage control. Gamers thought they just took the money and ran. A simple "we're working on it" would've been enough back then.
Must agree with both of them. It would've been great to hear from them; but at the time, it seemed like anything they said would have been garbage in the gaming communites' eyes.
i bought the game bevor launch and i was disapointet and played it for aroudn 20 hours then i stopt, now i got back and i love it gald Hello Games stick with the game and delivert so mutch to it hope they still have some cool stuff left to expand the game even further
I bought day one, never deleted it. Have enjoyed free DLC after free DLC from Hellogames. Coming from Elite Dangerous, it was a refreshing take on space exploration. Way more color to the game, I had "legs" to walk on (ED now just teased their legs feature....) animals to discover and huge caverns to explore.
Jeez you can just imagine what hello games will do on PS5. This game will be a flippin beast!
This game is so satisfying... i like to casually explore new planets, build, and find my ultimate Forever Ship. Great game, and there is an update coming soon.
The similarities to cyberpunk 2077 are uncanny. I am really hoping cyber punk has a no mans sky comeback. The devs at cdpr neeed time. No mans sky revival didn't happen overnight
Game is great. Yeah, Hello Games did do the dirty - and whilst we must not forget the words they spoke its hard to ignore their actions. The game being worked on, without having to pay a cent for the 4 - 5 years of updates speaks volumes and while some will still expect more when they eventually drop support I do believe Sean and his team have nailed it.
Can I recommend this to everyone? No. This isn't a niche' game but you have to enjoy a slower paced make your own adventure and way kinda game. Its not all shooty bang like COD either. Its perfect for those who still have an imagination and grewup building things with Lego whilst having their eye on the majesty and mystery of the greater universe. My girlfriend plays on her Ps4 pro and I play on my pc and because of Hello Games efforts we can play together and experience all the lunacy that is Proc gen (especially the creature generation at times).
I still have the OG PS4 case of it. Bought it day one and never sold it
Listen, I understand people's excitement for the game updating and continuing to evolve into the version we currently have. But as someone who went ahead and got the platinum trophy for it, I can say with 100% honesty that they simply tricked you into thinking it's better.
Yes, there's co-op now. Yes, you can build bases. Yes, there are new variations of planets and areas to explore. Yes, there's new missions that open up more to do... But it doesn't change the fact that you're still forced to explore planets with absolutely nothing interesting in them. Animals still do nothing but walk around and exist. Flora ends up eventually looking the same with slight variations. Temperatures on planets only serve to add annoyance and eat up resources rather than challenge the player.
There are things to do in between this, but what's the point of doing it when your only real "reward" is the ability to see more of these barren, desolate planets? It's just No Man's Sky with extra steps. Instead of improving the actual gameplay loop and making your goal feel meaningful, they just slapped more things on top of the already bland main structure.
It's still better
@@DeosPraetorian Putting sparkles on a dog turd technically makes it "better" but it doesn't change the fact that it's still a dog turd under all the cosmetics.
@@FreakinSweet1987 That's the same as asking why should anything in life matter if the end is just death?
You build bases because you can and you want to , just as you play coop because.... , and watch animals because..... and eventually you get bored of it and you leave the game to play another one. The definitely has around 80(Maybe around 50 for some types of people) hours of play before it gets boring and that's more than enough.....
@Urayis wish l One major thing before we get into this: If you're going to call out the intelligence of someone else's decisions, you should try to learn proper English, spelling and punctuation. Because right now you ironically look like an uneducated idiot.
As for the game, I bought it at launch for full price and 90% of the trophies came naturally before the patch by just playing and doing what the game expects of you. I'm not going to buy a game and just shelf it without giving it a fair shot.
I enjoyed my time with it enough to see what else it had in store. The problem is that the gameplay loop eventually shows how shallow and lackluster it is, and by that time you've already sunk 30+ hours in and done almost everything there is to do.
You know you could have the exact same criticisms of Minecraft, as the core gameplay (minus the story aspect) is strikingly similar. I think it boils down to a base building adventure once you hit endgame, much the same way Minecraft does. In my opinion it comes down to what you enjoy about the experience, and I rather enjoy the space aesthetic a lot
Me and my group of space pirate play every weekend soooooo I don’t know what this down fall is
Now there is one thing the game is missing. Space walks. What would be more fun than decompressing your ship’s cockpit and float around in space?
I got it for $8 and are some of the best 8 dollars I've spent on a game. By the time I got it-it was so fun. I still have to try the final add on. But I've already played so much that I got my fill.

Before u buy the game be reminded that it is well made and seen for people who have great decision making as well as work planning since the game has a story but once you do finish it the rest is just up to you, the rest that happens is all up to the player and his/her ability to have independent objectives, in short the fun of the game is all on u and how u play and see it
