Actually, being a mid-size truck, it's not very big at all. But then that's ONE reason I got one, as only a MID-size truck would do, not a full-size one. Even in my small 1-car garage, it looks SMALL...and I'm then thinking how can such a SMALL truck cost SO MUCH? Only Jeep knows... ;-) -- BR
Hi Paul excellent review on the gladiator. I test drove the rubicon vision and for sure the shocks are way better than the base model overland. Wow! I was really impressed about the agility in corners and how it handles on the road. Of course a little of road noise with the AT tyres. Safety rating for me is a must but it’s a vehicle that sits pretty high on the road and this gladiator is definitely on my top list due to its features. Thumbs up for me.
Rubicon setup, with Fox shocks, etc, surprisingly delivers a better on-road performance. And this car puts a much bigger smile on my face than my previous Amarok. And a get a lot more guys coming up to me asking about it ... can't fill up at the service station without someone wanting to have a chat and a sticky beak ;-)
Great review Paul, by far the most objective and professionally honest motor reviews out there. As an owner of an old school Defender comfort is not something I’m looking for in a function over form vehicle like the Gladiator. Cheers mate. Warren.

The thing people forget about jeeps is that they only get a poor safety rating because they are designed to be safe in slow collisions primarily as that’s what you will experience off road but tbh having been hit my a 16 wheel lorry at 60mph my Jeep saved my life as my first car the car was so solid that it prevented the lorry from turning me into a crushed packet of mush
Hi Paul, love your videos. I bought the exact same spec/trim as this about 6 months ago and have put 12,000km on it. You’ve been incredibly accurate with almost everything you have said although fuel economy does get better. I did a 600km round trip averaging just under 10 L/100 however around town sits on 13.5 L/100. Whilst the V6 petrol with 8 speed ZF trans is fantastically matched I felt the Rubicon with the 4.11 diff gears to be a lot more snappy and responsive however for daily driving seems to be forever changing gears whereas the Overland is a lot more lazy. Factory audio is ok but not fantastic and unfortunately the Bluetooth speaker is a massive waste of money. It’s a cool gimmick but such a wasted opportunity to have something that sounds “mediocre” instead of “ok”. I was unlucky to have a misfire with mine within 100km of purchase and it spent the entire first week back at the dealer to diagnose what ended up being a single faulty (from new) spark plug. Seems as if some Jeep dealers are still woeful in their abilities and their customer service. Well, keep up the good work.

I had been hoping you would do a review of this car. Safety is important, however safety standards only get more stringent and for me do not necessarily give a “big picture” perspective. For example there are safety features in the jeep that only existed in luxury cars 5 years ago. Performance is an interesting one as even though it does not set the world on fire it is still faster than any other dual cab currently on the market, with the exception of the VW Amarok V6. Realistically I think it is a hoot. It is compromised, but then again, most of the best cars through the years have been compromised for some reason or other.
Bought a gladiator. 1st overlanding trip done and 10k on the clock. Expensive in Rubicon trim but money well spend. Quality of the vehicle surprisingly good compared to my other vehicles.
Thanks for pointing out turning circle. Practicality of parking in shopping centres and effectiveness of driving light performance should be in all reviews
I don't notice any difference maneuvering/parking my Gladiator from my previous vehicle, a Honda Pilot...which was actually WIDER, even if shorter length-wise. In the city, it fits into normal parking spaces even better then the Pilot, as it has have more space on each side I didn't have with the Pilot. In my garage, my Pilot took up more side-to-side space -- the Gladiator looks way "skinnier" in comparison. -- BR (2021 Gladiator Rubicon)
Great video. Appreciate the word “bakkies”. I love Jeep. Safety goes out of the window when I see a Jeep. If you equip it well, it’s extremely safe due to all the metal you add to it. It can become like a tank.

I have a 21 jeep wrangler willy’s. i did have buyers remorse at beginning because it the model i have is more bare bones have “the technological features”. but after taking it off roading, camping, and the roof off it’s the best feeling
Yes Paul. I've bought a Gladiator and have had it for 60,000km. I've driven all around Australia from the Snowys, Byron, West McDonnell Ranges, Yulara, Coober Pedy, Broken Hill, Lighting Ridge, Mildura, Canberra, Tasmania and the rest. It's a fantastic car. I have a GVM upgrade to 3107kg from Solve Offroad, which (regarless of supplier) is a necessary modification. So add $5K to any purchase. And the new Night Eagle needs another MOPAR $300 kit to provide front, rear and central Diff Locks (awesome value). It's fantastic for touring. The suspension is sublime, the modifications available in Australia and Overseas are outstanding. I have, personally, hated Jeeps and their reputation for a good thirty years or so of driving experience - I only bought this as my car was stolen during COVID and this was available. But, after knocking them for so long - I am a Jeep convert. They are great quality, the local dealership (Canberra) is awesome, and the performance all-round of the vehicle for off roading is brilliant. BTW - you mentioned in a 70-series video that they are all you see outback. Incorrect - the most common vehicle I see are the new Ranger utes (2023 onwards), then the Toyota Prado, then the Toyota FJ Cruiser (a surprise) then Jeeps. Seriously - go for a tour outback (happy to tag along!) and you will discover reality vs what Toyota wants to tell you.

I reckon most people assume any car post 2010 is very safe and wouldn't even look at any ratings. My sister thought her 2008 Focus is safer than my smaller 2020 Fiesta. Keep up the great work Paul
Ah would have been great to get your hands on the Rubicon. It's such a shame we have such a weaker version (and petrol only!!) here compared to the states. I am literally their target market as a one eyed Jeeper (hence the stack of JK content on my channel) and I've got a Dmax on order. It's just such a solid miss on so many things unfortunately compared to other dual cabs. It's almost like FCA are just drawing in and focusing in on their heartland. Anyway great vid as always Paul

I briefly considered one and then I slapped myself out of it and bought a Raptor. Couldn’t be happier with my decision. The Goldilocks looks good on paper but then it’s all down hill from there.
Well, I could have gotten a Raptor (or Power Wagon, TRX -- whatever FULL-size truck I wanted) but it wouldn't do (for several reasons) -- it didn't even look good "on-paper." So I got a Gladiator -- no regrets, but DO wish it got better MPG numbers, especially in the city. But then the Chevy Colorado ZR2 I was GOING to get has WORSE MPG numbers. So it is for these serious 4x4/off-road-designed vehicles, so I have to accept that. Otherwise, it's fun to drive, aside from it outstanding capability off-road...and ON road, it drives VERY nicely. No complaints.... -- BR

Mate I have no idea how long you drove this Gladiator for and your bias is distinctively anti Jeep, feels like it was a simple day drive / review. I own a Gladiator since Dec 2020 having done 24,000 km and I'm getting 8.9l/100km for Highway driving and 11.1l around town. I absolutely love this Dual Cab ute. The engine is punchy and responsive. I can't believe your poor demo of a turning circle, especially given this is a 5.6m vehicle. It definitely turns better than you demonstrated. The bin / tub is an ideal size for work with the drop down rear used as a work platform, bench, cooking area... This Jeep brings back the FUN in 4wding. Gotta remember as well that this Jeep is ready to drive off road straight out of the showroom, which is exactly what I did. No extra $$$$ needed like other brands selling for more $$$ and still needing more $$$ to make them trail ready. Lots of interior space with stylish American comfort. We love our Gladiator and has been the best vehicle purchase decision we've made. If you want a punchy, economical 'does everything' dual cab, then you definitely need to look at these. You won't regret it it and will arrive home every day with a huge smile on the dial. Enjoy.
That's pretty impressive 0 100 times considering its 2 tonne truck and equally impressive is during your testing and flat out acceleration it didn't trip and eng check light
It can ford water 30 inches deep...higher than I'll probably ever need -- except during an emergency, like evacuating a flood zone during a natural disaster event! ;-) -- BR
Hey Paul. Just thought I’d let you know. Not sure if anyone else has picked up on it. I have the 2020 Overland. The review says the rear tray is (4.02min) 860mm H but it’s actually 460mm H. Just a heads up as I brought a storage case and doesn’t fit lol. Used ur measurements to buy haha. Other than that love my Gladiator and your reviews. Always a good watch
I do like Jeeps, have had many different models over the years and have traveled remote Australia many times in them, to date no issues. I have been really looking forward to the Gladiator but extremely disappointed with the Aussie spec we're getting. The US gets the 3.0L v6 CRD from the Grand Cherokee's and they have a much higher payload and towing capacity (3.5t). For whatever reason it's numbers are a lot lower here. Also the Rubicon models have higher flares for bigger tyres and have 33" BFG AT KO3 stock (which would make it legal to have 35s in most Aussie states), but we get a very take version here. If I could get a Rubi in US spec with the v6 CRD 100% worth buying and would kill the competition here. Note: the ugly front bumper is to satisfy ADR rules here, the stock US bumper is much nicer. But most will be fitting a steel bar anyway.
For the crash rating, is there a distinction made between the crash / bad driver avoidance tech, and the actual safety performance in a crash, or are they just factored in the single rating? Have a Gladiator on order arriving in the next week. More concerned about living life and being a defensive driver.
Please make a video comparing all UTEs with their rated maximum payload off-road test. All your videos you do tests without payload. I think it'll be very interesting. I mean people who buy these want to carry payloads in rough terrain as well.
safety schmafety, if i'm buying a gladiator i've already opted out of the bubblewrap lifestyle, the only thing it needs in the way of safety is a huge bullbar at which point you become a titan of the road and can deal with anything
Jeep is very different. It’s not for everyone and it’s not like driving a normal car. It’s something unique and if you understand Jeep then you’ll enjoy it. It’s a Jeep thing, you wouldn’t understand
I’d say the crash tests that are more important to me are the physical ones. Whether or not a car has AEB, lane departure warning or lane keep assist or whatever, its still the physical structure that saves lives. Its a shame this didnt do well, and ultimately would deter me from owning one. Of course, it is probably just a result of the fact it is an off roading convertible, which is cool as.
3 star rating is poor for a car above $70k.....love the look but safety is too important to dismiss and the lack of interior space let's this vehicle down...
Just a caveat to this as well - keep in mind there are a number of utes in this segment that haven't been crash tested before and some that have crash ratings that are over 5 years old. Not saying the Gladiator's crash test wasn't bad (it was), I just wonder how much of it comes down to all the removable parts and the ease of removing it all.
@@waynehobbs5175 Are you sure about the crash safety rating of your Pajero Sport, Wayne old buddy? - I see they've not been tested since 2015 - how defensible is that? If the test for the 2020 Triton in Central America is anything to go by... anyway, stay safely indoors!
Safety rating does not make a selling point to me. Respect it does for others. I respect it for my family car in regards of crumple and crush zones etc. It depends on what those safety items are. For my Landcruiser Ute, which is early 2000’s I am happy without them, but our family CX9 I am happy to have
I would buy one of these regardless of the safety score. Mustang rates poorly for safety too but they're are plenty of those on the roads so obviously not a huge consideration for the types of people these cars appeal too.
That's an expensive rig here in Australia. Even taking account of exchange rates it seems to demand a premium compared to the US market so I'd be looking for the reasoning behind that. I have asked Jeep via their FB ads and they just say there are "many reasons" for the premium. When it comes to my dollar I'm not convinced on this one.
Though look at the price of landcruisers etc, and nowadays, landcruisers are ifs, not live axle all the way round, like the gladiator, he'll give the gladiator a 2" lift and you can fit 40s on it, and plus like it's a convertable, though as paul mentioned the safety rating is extremely poor, and although the payload is more similar to a land cruiser, it's terrible for a ute

It's unfortunately not a premium compared to the states. Your average options sport S with the auto trans is 48-52k which is in that low to mid 60k mark for you guys. It's expensive everywhere. 😩
@@dakotamorgan6594 Jeep US site shows MSRP range from 33,500 to 51,700 at the top. Our top vehicle is the Rubicon at 83,000 with certainly higher tax. That would equate to a pre tax wholesale of about 68 to 70K. Exchange rates do narrow the gap but cost alone does not dictate price.
Actually explained it wrong it not really low spec that would be the sport in America. It’s very close to rubicon in pricing but it has more overland comfort features like leather seats standard that rubicon does not. Rubicon has the heavy duty off road gear. So it’s a choice between what you want. I have limited edition which is best of both worlds and I’m loving it. It’s a recreational Fourbie not a work Ute and for that it can’t be beaten. Put a upgraded load carrying suspension in and save $7000 and get 200kg extra(no luxury tax) so it’s a win win.
Great review as always. Silly money for car that only has 3* safety rating. Had a number of close calls touring Australia and no need to add more risk by driving a car with medium safety protection. While crashing is definitely not on anyone’s list, if it happens, want the deck stacked in my favour. Keep the reviews coming. Hey, when time, could you do another more in-depth review on GWM Canon. It’s getting a lot of attention and wouldn’t mind if possible ‘a week with the canon’ and day to day thoughts.
Sadly, Paul, this does not compete with those vehicles you mentioned. You'd need the Rubicon or Mojave trim to compete with the other three. The Overland is the "luxury" street version.
I love the look of it but I couldn't justify $75000 considering the poor payload and poor safety rating and doesn't look like it could tow much either. I think it would appeal to a couple maybe, but wouldnt be my choice with little kids. Does look cool though.
I wonder why that's your base model. In usa we got some base models that start in the upper 30,000 range and I noticed you guys lost out on 5 hp and 9 ftlb at the peak, you probably lost more power under the curve. It's a real shame but as of driving I feel it's very appropriate for rough terrain and harsh weather of where I live. The coils and fat tires on the base trim make for a very nice ride. We go camping and take the front roof panels off and enjoy the view of pine trees. (I live in the very big mountains of California) and going to the beach is nice too. It feels weird seeing you guys drive on the other side of the cabin.
What other vehicle on the market competes with the Gladiator? I don't need one but I want one as I love the way they look and although expensive the Rubicon is good to go off the showroom floor with a winch being the only thing required. By the time you put decent tyres and suspension and a bull bar to accept a winch on any of the other dual cabs you are at the same price of the Gladiator. Not to mention you have probably made your modified 4x4 unroadworthy in the process and reduced your warranty.
Your insurance will be higher than usual is you purchase this car, particularly because of lack of crash avoidance tech. Crash avoidance tech plays a critical part nowadays in the crash rating assessment, hence the 0 star Mitsubishi Express.
Good review except......I think the depth of the tub dimension you gave is WAY off. Should read about 450 mm not 861 mm. Seriously considering buying one :-)

Safety and Jeeps don't go together. My view as a Jeep owner is that it's safer than a motorcycle. Life should be lived.

Regarding the Jeep. My only concern is that it is a Jeep and their dealer base seems to be shrinking! I’ve also heard some horror stories about their service and repair charges. Otherwise it looks...different. Cheers.

I reckon most people assume any car post 2010 is very safe and wouldn't even look at any ratings. My sister thought her 2008 Focus is safer than my smaller 2020 Fiesta. Keep up the great work Paul
Have a newborn which is why we went with a ranger. Safety is paramount these days especially when you have kids. Jeep needs to up their game!

Ah would have been great to get your hands on the Rubicon. It's such a shame we have such a weaker version (and petrol only!!) here compared to the states. I am literally their target market as a one eyed Jeeper (hence the stack of JK content on my channel) and I've got a Dmax on order. It's just such a solid miss on so many things unfortunately compared to other dual cabs. It's almost like FCA are just drawing in and focusing in on their heartland. Anyway great vid as always Paul

I briefly considered one and then I slapped myself out of it and bought a Raptor. Couldn’t be happier with my decision. The Goldilocks looks good on paper but then it’s all down hill from there.
Well, I could have gotten a Raptor (or Power Wagon, TRX -- whatever FULL-size truck I wanted) but it wouldn't do (for several reasons) -- it didn't even look good "on-paper."
So I got a Gladiator -- no regrets, but DO wish it got better MPG numbers, especially in the city. But then the Chevy Colorado ZR2 I was GOING to get has WORSE MPG numbers.
So it is for these serious 4x4/off-road-designed vehicles, so I have to accept that.
Otherwise, it's fun to drive, aside from it outstanding capability off-road...and ON road, it drives VERY nicely. No complaints....

Mate I have no idea how long you drove this Gladiator for and your bias is distinctively anti Jeep, feels like it was a simple day drive / review. I own a Gladiator since Dec 2020 having done 24,000 km and I'm getting 8.9l/100km for Highway driving and 11.1l around town. I absolutely love this Dual Cab ute. The engine is punchy and responsive. I can't believe your poor demo of a turning circle, especially given this is a 5.6m vehicle. It definitely turns better than you demonstrated. The bin / tub is an ideal size for work with the drop down rear used as a work platform, bench, cooking area... This Jeep brings back the FUN in 4wding. Gotta remember as well that this Jeep is ready to drive off road straight out of the showroom, which is exactly what I did. No extra $$$$ needed like other brands selling for more $$$ and still needing more $$$ to make them trail ready. Lots of interior space with stylish American comfort. We love our Gladiator and has been the best vehicle purchase decision we've made. If you want a punchy, economical 'does everything' dual cab, then you definitely need to look at these. You won't regret it it and will arrive home every day with a huge smile on the dial. Enjoy.
It's made for fun; rare these days. If you get a grin driving it, it's all worthwhile.
That's pretty impressive 0 100 times considering its 2 tonne truck and equally impressive is during your testing and flat out acceleration it didn't trip and eng check light

It can ford water 30 inches deep...higher than I'll probably ever need -- except during an emergency, like evacuating a flood zone during a natural disaster event! ;-)

Hey Paul. Just thought I’d let you know. Not sure if anyone else has picked up on it. I have the 2020 Overland. The review says the rear tray is (4.02min) 860mm H but it’s actually 460mm H. Just a heads up as I brought a storage case and doesn’t fit lol. Used ur measurements to buy haha. Other than that love my Gladiator and your reviews. Always a good watch

I do like Jeeps, have had many different models over the years and have traveled remote Australia many times in them, to date no issues. I have been really looking forward to the Gladiator but extremely disappointed with the Aussie spec we're getting. The US gets the 3.0L v6 CRD from the Grand Cherokee's and they have a much higher payload and towing capacity (3.5t). For whatever reason it's numbers are a lot lower here. Also the Rubicon models have higher flares for bigger tyres and have 33" BFG AT KO3 stock (which would make it legal to have 35s in most Aussie states), but we get a very take version here.
If I could get a Rubi in US spec with the v6 CRD 100% worth buying and would kill the competition here.
Note: the ugly front bumper is to satisfy ADR rules here, the stock US bumper is much nicer. But most will be fitting a steel bar anyway.

Please make a video comparing all UTEs with their rated maximum payload off-road test. All your videos you do tests without payload. I think it'll be very interesting. I mean people who buy these want to carry payloads in rough terrain as well.

I’d say the crash tests that are more important to me are the physical ones. Whether or not a car has AEB, lane departure warning or lane keep assist or whatever, its still the physical structure that saves lives. Its a shame this didnt do well, and ultimately would deter me from owning one. Of course, it is probably just a result of the fact it is an off roading convertible, which is cool as.
As far as I am aware ANCAP has never actually crash tested a Gladiator. In my opinion ANCAP is a flawed system overall.
Love it but safety is a must....Jeep lift your game!
3 star rating is poor for a car above $70k.....love the look but safety is too important to dismiss and the lack of interior space let's this vehicle down...
Just a caveat to this as well - keep in mind there are a number of utes in this segment that haven't been crash tested before and some that have crash ratings that are over 5 years old. Not saying the Gladiator's crash test wasn't bad (it was), I just wonder how much of it comes down to all the removable parts and the ease of removing it all.

Safety rating does not make a selling point to me. Respect it does for others. I respect it for my family car in regards of crumple and crush zones etc. It depends on what those safety items are. For my Landcruiser Ute, which is early 2000’s I am happy without them, but our family CX9 I am happy to have

I would buy one of these regardless of the safety score. Mustang rates poorly for safety too but they're are plenty of those on the roads so obviously not a huge consideration for the types of people these cars appeal too.
That's an expensive rig here in Australia. Even taking account of exchange rates it seems to demand a premium compared to the US market so I'd be looking for the reasoning behind that. I have asked Jeep via their FB ads and they just say there are "many reasons" for the premium. When it comes to my dollar I'm not convinced on this one.
Though look at the price of landcruisers etc, and nowadays, landcruisers are ifs, not live axle all the way round, like the gladiator, he'll give the gladiator a 2" lift and you can fit 40s on it, and plus like it's a convertable, though as paul mentioned the safety rating is extremely poor, and although the payload is more similar to a land cruiser, it's terrible for a ute

It's unfortunately not a premium compared to the states. Your average options sport S with the auto trans is 48-52k which is in that low to mid 60k mark for you guys. It's expensive everywhere. 😩
@@dakotamorgan6594 Jeep US site shows MSRP range from 33,500 to 51,700 at the top. Our top vehicle is the Rubicon at 83,000 with certainly higher tax. That would equate to a pre tax wholesale of about 68 to 70K. Exchange rates do narrow the gap but cost alone does not dictate price.
Actually explained it wrong it not really low spec that would be the sport in America. It’s very close to rubicon in pricing but it has more overland comfort features like leather seats standard that rubicon does not. Rubicon has the heavy duty off road gear. So it’s a choice between what you want. I have limited edition which is best of both worlds and I’m loving it. It’s a recreational Fourbie not a work Ute and for that it can’t be beaten. Put a upgraded load carrying suspension in and save $7000 and get 200kg extra(no luxury tax) so it’s a win win.

Great review as always. Silly money for car that only has 3* safety rating. Had a number of close calls touring Australia and no need to add more risk by driving a car with medium safety protection. While crashing is definitely not on anyone’s list, if it happens, want the deck stacked in my favour. Keep the reviews coming. Hey, when time, could you do another more in-depth review on GWM Canon. It’s getting a lot of attention and wouldn’t mind if possible ‘a week with the canon’ and day to day thoughts.

Sadly, Paul, this does not compete with those vehicles you mentioned. You'd need the Rubicon or Mojave trim to compete with the other three. The Overland is the "luxury" street version.
I love the look of it but I couldn't justify $75000 considering the poor payload and poor safety rating and doesn't look like it could tow much either. I think it would appeal to a couple maybe, but wouldnt be my choice with little kids. Does look cool though.
Agree it doesn't look premium, but that's not the segment that Jeep is targeting here. It looks like it's rugged to handle bumps and humps.
I wonder why that's your base model. In usa we got some base models that start in the upper 30,000 range and I noticed you guys lost out on 5 hp and 9 ftlb at the peak, you probably lost more power under the curve. It's a real shame but as of driving I feel it's very appropriate for rough terrain and harsh weather of where I live. The coils and fat tires on the base trim make for a very nice ride. We go camping and take the front roof panels off and enjoy the view of pine trees. (I live in the very big mountains of California) and going to the beach is nice too. It feels weird seeing you guys drive on the other side of the cabin.
What other vehicle on the market competes with the Gladiator? I don't need one but I want one as I love the way they look and although expensive the Rubicon is good to go off the showroom floor with a winch being the only thing required. By the time you put decent tyres and suspension and a bull bar to accept a winch on any of the other dual cabs you are at the same price of the Gladiator. Not to mention you have probably made your modified 4x4 unroadworthy in the process and reduced your warranty.

Your insurance will be higher than usual is you purchase this car, particularly because of lack of crash avoidance tech. Crash avoidance tech plays a critical part nowadays in the crash rating assessment, hence the 0 star Mitsubishi Express.
