    FYI, reverse the wheel to re-install the seal, it’s longer on one side vs. the other just for this purpose.

    Thanks, I botched the oil seals on a Troy Pony & seeing Troy no longer makes the oil seal guide & driver ( more like extinct to fine). Thank you again. there was one comment that made sense to get the oil seal centered & started by reversing the wheel to reinstall oil seal.

    I had a real hard time getting the wheel off, oxy acetylene wouldn't even get it off. So I left the roll pin out, soaked the axle in kroil and went to till some real hard abandoned field. after about 10 minutes of tilling the shaft started to slip, a little more kroil and the wheel came off very easily. I hope this helps anyone who has a stuck wheel and no torch.

    I just got one of these horse tiller's with a 7hp Kohler and this is exactly what I gotta do plus I'm going to change the tine seals. For the wheels I just put a 1 ⅜ long round locking pin in them so no tool is needed to take them off.

  • @sixtyfiveford
    @sixtyfiveford  12 лет назад +1

    Are you talking about the wheel? If so yes soaking with penetrating fluid helps. There is a cap in the center of the rim on the out side. If you remove it you should be able to tip the tiller at an angle and pour the fluid in and let it soak. The only other thing that helps is HIGH HEAT for a Oxy Acetylene torch (propane wont get hot fast enough to work). Don't use excessive hammering as you will strip the gears on the inside.

    Helpful video, enjoyed the backup music track. My right wheel would not budge, had to suspend the horse by the right wheel on bars across two sawhorses and use a piece of bar stock and a three pound hammer to drive the wheel shaft out of the wheel hub. Years ago the roll pin hadn't been driven all the way through, just driven into one hole, and it managed over the years to swage out the wheel hub, she just wouldn't let go. A useful tip though, once the wheel hub is cleaned up, you can use it to evenly press the new seal back into the journal.

      Making them cherry red hot is the only way to remove them. If your tine seals are just weeping not creating a puddle, it's not worth the hours of aggravation as the shaft maybe scored and even new seals won't do anything.

    Every mechanic in the world watching this video has their jaw on the table watching this horror show. "I just broke the tip off of my screwdriver!" Great video on a job I have to do cause mine is pouring fluid out of the seals. Just busting your chops. Keep up the good work!

  • @raypollard87
    @raypollard87 8 лет назад +1

    I have found that replacing the seals on these old tillers is an exercise in futility. generally when the seals go bad it is because the brass bushing that supports the axle is worn out. one should always wiggle the shaft to see if there is excessive slop between the bushing and the shaft, if there is, it is a waste of time and money to replace only the seal because it will still leak.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  8 лет назад +1

      +Ray Pollard Very true but they do get cut pretty easily as well by dirt or weeds getting wrapped around the axle.

    • @raypollard87
      @raypollard87 8 лет назад

      sixtyfiveford you are correct, point taken. the seals should have been made recessed to prevent this

    • @jhitt79
      @jhitt79 7 лет назад

      Ray Pollard what does one do if the bushings are worn out? Can they be replaced? I just got one of these older Troy-bilt "pony" tillers that I'm planning on replacing the seals and would do the bushings at the same time if I can get them.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  7 лет назад

      You'll need to pull apart the transmission to replace the bushings. It's generally easier to just keep adding occasional gear oil.

    • @jhitt79
      @jhitt79 7 лет назад

      sixtyfiveford these are pretty bad. My tiller is an older "pony" it's not like the one in your video. It doesn't have the removable cover on the top, the access is through the front. I've found the axle can be driven out the side once the key ways are lined up and the key takes the bushing on one side with it.

    I do have a question. I have what looks like a 1975 Troy Bilt Horse and the depth gauge is not working properly at all. I have never dealt with one of these tillers before, but from what I can see, the depth gauge doesn't lock because either a bolt broke off or a spring is rusted out just above the tine guard and below the gauge handle. Do you have any recommendations on how to fix it? Without it, the thing is just yanking me all around the yard.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  6 лет назад

      That square bolt/plug will come out. Then there should be a spring and pin. It's probably rusted, but you'll need to get out the pin and remnants of the spring. Chances are you'll just need a new random spring.

    • @TheBeardedSandman
      @TheBeardedSandman 6 лет назад

      Oh! Ok, so it IS a spring I'm seeing and not rusted remains of bolt threads. That actually helps a lot.

    OK, first things first. Thanks for showing THE MOST HAZARD LADEN TECHNIQUES EVER! No safety glasses, using a screwdriver as a pry/chisel. You even broke off the tip and just kept motoring on. C'mon man, really?
    Now, other than that ass-tightening sequence of watching a gorilla peel a banana, your observations, tips and actual work steps were sound and useful. So, thank you.
    Be safe.
