Thank you for your effort. I have a 6 hp Horse and that is one heck of a tiller but it does need service. You have really helped and thank you for your effort.
I recently purchase an old troy bilt horse. It works great for the job it was designed to do. Right from the start I had the usual leakage from one of the tine seals. I cleaned up the mating surfaces and seated the seal carefully. Sure it was a non oem seal. I still got a slow leak. I don't know how much play is acceptable in the tiller tine assembly and I was considering if the bearings on the leaking side is the culprit causing the seal to leak.

My tiller adjustment bar keeps jumping out and the tiller quickly goes to the deepest setting. How does one adjust the keeper screw?

I have an early 80s Troy-Bilt Horse just like that. I have the original manuals and parts list that came with it, mainly as I inherited it from the original owner. Also have Troy-Bilt 33" walk behind mower. Old School Garden Way, before MTD took over. Jacks Small Engines is my go to for most stuff regarding those, as well as other stuff I need parts for. They carry most of the MTD parts. Brent Chalmers is the only place I found that had a certain part I needed though. I have the chipper/shredder attachment, and I think they were the only ones who had what I needed. I just did a similar overhaul like you did to the tiller because the seals were leaking. I bought a new shaft the tiller tines bolt to. The old one already have a sleeve on it and the seals had worn deep grooves in it. I got that from a low price alternate, as you said, sticker shock for some parts. Turns out the threaded ends are metric, so my old bolts wouldn't fit. Not a huge deal, but it's one more trip to the store to get bolts that fit. I also have 2 local small engine repair shops in town, with old dudes that know their stuff, who can find just about anything.
Thank you for sharing. That's great info. I'll definitely be taking note of some of the places you got parts from. It's seem like it's getting harder and harder to find people who know machinery like this.

Hi i bought a troybuilt tiller and when i gave them the model# off the drive, they couldnt find it...they insisted they dont have records for that.
The number on the drive may be referencing the part number that was used by the company that made the drive shaft. The model number and serial number for the actual tiller may be found on the transmission housing and will be cast into the housing block. If you can find it, call into Troy-Bilt and they should be able to pull up all the info that you need.
I think its exploded diagrams not explosive, unless it's about to blow up.
