Tillerman Farms After Beta

An update of Tillerman Farms after Tropical Storm Beta left Houston.
Story of my life! My 1970 Troy needs the same thing done. Clean and replace!😊
O wow i need that same parts book was it hard to find i look all over the net nothing on the pto ones i need to fix the same thing you did in this video
Ya gotta watch them explosive diagrams! They can go at anytime! 😂
Easier way would have tried vice grips if that didn’t work easy out
Where did you buy parts for the repair ?
Excelente trabajo.saludos desde Costa Rica.
Good information. If you lose all the music and explain what you are doing, (as an example, what size drill bit did you use to remove the bolt head) because the devil is in the details, it would be an even better video.
@Tillerman farms how can I get these exact same parts to South Africa?
Which chia carb for propane would work on my old horse tiller?
My tiller adjustment bar keeps jumping out and the tiller quickly goes to the deepest setting. How does one adjust the keeper screw?
Just picked up one made in 1985. This was a great video and your presentation is perfect. Thank you very much, as I got a lot from it.
Thank you for your effort. I have a 6 hp Horse and that is one heck of a tiller but it does need service. You have really helped and thank you for your effort.
Thanks for the video. I have a Horse Tiller that I bought new back in the 70's. I have to work on it so you have helped me get started. Looking forward to the 2nd video and thank you for your effort.
It’s called a key way
My guess is he junked the tiller! That transmission is 800.00
I think its exploded diagrams not explosive, unless it's about to blow up.
Do you feel superior since you found a misspelled word?
I recently purchase an old troy bilt horse. It works great for the job it was designed to do. Right from the start I had the usual leakage from one of the tine seals. I cleaned up the mating surfaces and seated the seal carefully. Sure it was a non oem seal. I still got a slow leak. I don't know how much play is acceptable in the tiller tine assembly and I was considering if the bearings on the leaking side is the culprit causing the seal to leak.
Am desperate to find parts for my older 1977 troy bilt roto tiller
what is your go too web sight for troy built m8st tiller 301513 1704404
Troybuilt did make a generator that would hook up to the horse tiller
Thanks
That white shirt wouldn't be white long on me !
You should sandblast and repaint it! Don’t skip out when you’re that deep already!
That just leaves another project for this summer!
You can’t buy a horse for $200.00! I love my big red horse! 200’ by 50’ in about 2-3 hours! 40 rows 50’ long each, using the hiller attachment. Granted my soil is sandy loam, but that’s the benefit to living in eastern NC coastal plains!peace
That's an awesome size garden! I've never been successful in using the hiller attachment though. I wish I could be.
I have an early 80s Troy-Bilt Horse just like that. I have the original manuals and parts list that came with it, mainly as I inherited it from the original owner. Also have Troy-Bilt 33" walk behind mower. Old School Garden Way, before MTD took over. Jacks Small Engines is my go to for most stuff regarding those, as well as other stuff I need parts for. They carry most of the MTD parts. Brent Chalmers is the only place I found that had a certain part I needed though. I have the chipper/shredder attachment, and I think they were the only ones who had what I needed. I just did a similar overhaul like you did to the tiller because the seals were leaking. I bought a new shaft the tiller tines bolt to. The old one already have a sleeve on it and the seals had worn deep grooves in it. I got that from a low price alternate, as you said, sticker shock for some parts. Turns out the threaded ends are metric, so my old bolts wouldn't fit. Not a huge deal, but it's one more trip to the store to get bolts that fit. I also have 2 local small engine repair shops in town, with old dudes that know their stuff, who can find just about anything.
Thank you for sharing. That's great info. I'll definitely be taking note of some of the places you got parts from. It's seem like it's getting harder and harder to find people who know machinery like this.
What kinda oil you put in the pumpkin on the gear box
I actually used the same gear oil that I used in my 2001 Ford F250, which is 75W-90. I'm actually not sure if that's what you're supposed to use, but it's what I've always used. It has well for me so far.
I have an early 80's troy built since new. Just repowered the 8hp with a 7hp Koehler surplus motor last year. One thing I have always done is adjust the motor belt a tad loose so if I hit a large rock ect it squawks the belt vs the driveline taking the hit. I've squawked the belt plenty over the years and still on the original.
That's good to know! I've never thought about it that way. Thanks!
Hi i bought a troybuilt tiller and when i gave them the model# off the drive, they couldnt find it...they insisted they dont have records for that.
The number on the drive may be referencing the part number that was used by the company that made the drive shaft. The model number and serial number for the actual tiller may be found on the transmission housing and will be cast into the housing block. If you can find it, call into Troy-Bilt and they should be able to pull up all the info that you need.
Thanks, great set. I have the Horse with pto lever. Tiller stays enfaged. Lever turns freely but won’t disengage. Doesn’t seem like it’s hooked up to pto. Any advice? Thanks
I would start by taking apart the tiller tines off the tiller. There are two dog clutches in there and they could be rusted. And with the load of the engine turning, it's not allowing it to disengage. If that's the case, just clean them up and oil them good. While it's apart, also take a look at the dog clutch on the gearbox side. Make sure that, when moving the PTO clutch lever, that it's sliding back and forth smoothly. If not, start by cleaning the parts good and oiling them. Start there and see where it takes you. The Achilles heel of these horse tillers is that all the parts have to be very well lubricated, but spending their life in dirt is not good for the lubrication and creates a lapping compound. So it's a fine dance between keeping them clean and keeping them lubricated. Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions.
Thanks, will do
DID YOU HAVE TO ADJUST THE END PLAY WHEN INSTALLING THE DRIVE SHAFT?
You do, but I've found that the tolerances are so loose that it doesn't have to be perfect.
Were did you find part’s
I found the parts directly from the Troy-Bilt website: www.troybilt.com/en_US/garden-tiller-parts
Welding is difficult for beginners however get a welder learn how, these bolts ,Welding a quarter or 3 8 pipe to the head from inside pipe .
I rebuilt a 1975 without PTO. Great machine!!! I put a Predator 212cc Motor from Harbor Freight, easy install. Amazing machine
That's a great engine upgrade/swap! And even though the Predator seems to be looked down upon for being a cheap engine from Harbor Freight, it's one of the "honey holes" of engines for farming equipment. As long as you keep up with the oil maintenance, they'll keep going forever.
'Fantastic three videos. 'Bravo, brother, well done. Part 1, 2, catalog & manuals. I scored that same tiller today and found you quickly on-line. You have made me feel confident.
do the tines counter rotate?
No
Thank you for your video! I have a troy bilt tiller and the tine part just will not work and is stuck... I tried to open it up and see if it can be fixed it but am having trouble. Do you know what might be the cause for the tine not turning when the engine works fine? The spring is alright too.. Thank you for any help you could provide me with
Sorry I haven't gotten back to you sooner. I'm assuming the spring you're talking about is the one that goes behind the dog clutch on the tiller assembly. If that spring is okay and hasn't eaten through the rubber seal that's behind it, then it's probably one of two things. 1.) You're PTO shaft is worn down 2.) Your worm gear has been worn down. I had a very simiar issue happen to me on this tiller. I would start with draining the gear fluid in the tiller attachment and see how much metal is in the fluid. If there's a lot of gold specs, then the worm gear is gone and will have to be replaced. If you need, you can find a manual for your tiller here: www.brentchalmers.com/TillerManuals.php The best part is they typically include an explosive diagram that shows all the parts and where they go (the section you will need to focus on is the Tiller Attachment Transmission Assemblies), plus some of them even have the part numbers so you can easily find replacements if needed.
Excellent machines, before MTD bought them and ruined them!! Check those rims that they aren’t seized on the axle. I had one that was so bad I had to cut the rim off the axle to fix tire. Nice video!
I was very worried about the rims seizing. After working a few hours to get one rim off, I just left the other one alone and hoped that I will never have to deal with it again. Fingers crossed!
I read where one guy knocked the roll pins out which attach the wheels to the axel and sprayed it with some PB Blaster. Then he just tilled some soil and the wheels broke loose by themselves. I haven't tried it yet, but it sounded good!
I only cut off suckers at the bottom and allow two other suckers to branch off midway up the plant, to make more tomatoes and give the plant more leaves to shade the tomatoes from the hot sun. Don’t forget to feed your tomatoes every two weeks. You can use Dr. Earth fertilizer for Tomatoes and Vegetables or Miracle Grow fertilizer for tomatoes.
I've never experimented on letting the suckers grow on the tomato plant. I planned to do it this year, but we had LOTS of rain this year that caused us to lose all of our crops. So I plan to experiment next season. For now, we are planning for our fall garden.
I am always very clean like him when doing mechanical repairs. 😆 Gaaaaay! Proud.
From whom did yo buy the parts? Great job on the video
partstree.com has some
We are so sorry for the lack of response. We were on a long hiatus from RUclips and are just getting back. I went directly to Troy Bilt to get all the replacement parts. It took me some time, but finding a manual on Google helped A LOT. And thank you for the compliment.
Can you list the parts you purchased versus the ones you were able to reuse?
The PTO was so torn up and it's so difficult to get in there that I decided to go in with all new parts, so about 99% of all the parts were new.
Kind of looks like there was an oil leak on the PTO shaft still
You are right on that one. Troy Bilt sent me the wrong PTO seal which caused a leak. I ended up contacting them and getting the right seal, so it's now leak free.
@@tillermanfarms2162 can you give me the part #please?
The original part number is 9617, but has been replaced with 921-04030 according to the Troy-Bilt website. www.troybilt.com/en_US/miscellaneous-classification/oil-seal-.750id-x-1.783od/921-04030.html#q=9617&lang=en_US&start=0
Some one lied to you about being a mechanic, learning how to hold your tongue just right and swearing are 70% of what a mechanic does.
Very true
where did you find the parts?
Personally, I went to Troy Bilt directly for all my replacement parts. It did take me a few hours to find everything, but the manual helped a lot. Good luck
Mtd bought greenway out. I purchased a transmission for 800.00 from them it’s an exact match
next time you run afoul of chewed up bolt heads, tack weld a piece of steal to them and they will turn out
Thanks for the advice. I have seen people do it, but have never tried it myself.
Where I am a novice mechanic with a little background, I wished you explained the step-by-step procedures for installing all of the new parts. I am sure it would have been boring to the pros, but I need that training. Thank you.
Thanks really enjoyed it, I really would like to know where to get a catalog. I have a troy built horse tiller 8 hp maginum I bought, not real sure, in 1978 new. I don't know how I can find out what year it is but I would need to know so I can order the right parts for it. Can you help. Thanks
Great job on the video. I have the same tiller I bought in 1992. The Magnum Kohler is a great engine but certain parts are no longer available for them. My coil went bad causing the rope to kick back when starting. Before I could determine it was the coil it ruined the recoil starter which is not available for the M8T. I fixed it, replaced it with a new Honda GX270 8.5HP engine. Wonderful upgrade, good for another 29 years now!
@Peter Ohmart - Originally I did do a step-by-step video, but it was 2.5 hours long. Needless to say, I decided to shorten it. But I am trying to come up with ways to keep the videos short, but still get in all the vital information. So it's a work in progress
@Ray Lassiter - I was able to find the serial number on the tiller. With that, I contacted Troy Bilt and they were able to give me the year and model number. Once I had that info, I Googled a parts manual. It took some hunting, but was able to find it after a short time. What I liked about their manual is that they listed the parts and part numbers. For the most part, the part numbers had not changed. There were some new part numbers for a few parts, so I had to search for it by the name of the part instead.
@Steve Warner - One of my biggest fears is when something goes out on the motor that I won't be able to repair and I will end up having to do a motor swap.
I can't find parts for the pto seal on my pony troy do you have a website its like a 1998
Google custom parts inc.
We are so sorry for the lack of response. We were on a long hiatus from RUclips and are just getting back. Personally, I have always had trouble with any replacement parts that weren't Troy Bilt, so I always go to them directly. I would suggest calling their Customer Support directly at (800) 828-5500. They helped me identify the exact year and model of my tiller through the serial number. Once I had that info, I Googled a parts manual which lists all the parts and Troy Bilt part numbers.
Love your videos. Is there no end to your talents. };-)>
You are too kind!
I think you need to add wheels to the second one 😉
Coming soon! Stay tuned for more entertainment!
