MacBook Air M1 vs MacBook Pro 2017 (FL Studio 20)

  • Recently bought the MacBook Air M1 and wanted to compare it to my MacBook Pro 2017 for music production. I used FL studio 20.9 which is already compatible with the M1 chip, but I was running it in Rosetta 2, so that more of my plugins will work in their current state. Using Rosetta 2 slows down the processor in the M1 a little bit but the MacBook Air M1 still produced way better results and using way less processing power than my MBP 2017 to run the same project. (Check out my other short videos comparing these computers)

    the biggest gain for macbook air is the no fan. the m1 and m2 make it possible to get real studio-quality recordings without buying zoise reduction suites from izotope or waves. it's actually better because then you aren't degrading the source audio which in itself is a huge dif in studio recordings and home recordings. UAD APOLLO with MACBOOK AIR M2/M1 is a crazy combo. I picked u p the M2 solely for the no fan. Also note that my pc i'm upgrading from can only run one instance of ozone 10 at max buffer but on the M2 macbook air I can run 5 instances. my pc is 16 core 32 thread amd processor. no brainer to getting an air vs pc. No fan noise for me was the no brainer move.

      Nice. Im actually on an M1 MacBook Pro now and I NEVER heard the fan in 3 months. However I’ve been having some weird latency with midi input and, other weird audio glitches, slow load times of certain FL studio projects. I think it has to do with that certain 3rd party plugins still are not 100% smooth with the m1 chip. If I didn’t HAVE to get a new computer for music production I would probably hold off for another few month until all this was 100% fixed.

      @@trackfammusic2979 third party plugins run in rosetta so really no problem it's def not the chip. when I use protools everything is faster and smoother on my M2 than on my pc. All the plugins work too if I run protools in rosetta. As far as FL goes the software is native but the plugins are bridged so there shouldn't be any problems

      @@trackfammusic2979 Usually if you have anything on your master bus it will cause delay issues. make sure if you're not in the mix phase yet to remove any intensive plugins. Make beat first then add the plugins on the mixer view. you can always add the very minimal plugins like built in limiter on fruity loops or the L1 by waves. They don't add noticeable latency. The issues for me are plugins like soothe or spiff or ozone or anything izotope really. They add like a 1/4 of a second delay many times. Also on my mixer I only keep an L1 waves limiter but if I'm hitting it I'll turn the whole mix down a tad. Sometimes if I have to use a plugin for creative purposes I'll add it demo it then consolidate the pattern and mute the original with the plugin. If I have to make changes I'll reactive the plugin and make the changes.
      I've noticed that the plugins with the fancy guy with the crazy spectrometers and analysis features usually cause the unwanted glitches and delay. you have to increase your buffer setting to get them to work properly but you add latency when you do that so I tend to do my mix last after I make all the creative elements.

    • @DRINOMAN
      @DRINOMAN Год назад

      I use ozone 10 at the very end when I'm close to done with the beat to check but I deactivate whenever I have to play midi keyboard. There's a quick way to disable any plugins on the bottom of the mixer. Honestly @flstudio should do this automatically whenever you're recording period. Pro tools does it it's called low latency monitoring lol... Not sure why Fl hasn't done this yet.

      So do you recommend Mac for PC for music production ? I currently have a 2020 MacBook Pro i9 2TB 32 RAM on Catalina and from time to time I have some CPU issues when I have too many plugins open. This is why I was thinking of switching back to PC for beats but using my Mac for engineering and recording vocals.. what do you think ?

    • @ssserotonin1373
      @ssserotonin1373 7 месяцев назад +3

      @@analcavity3464 I’ll tell it to you like this brother. Nothing beats the MacBook Air 22 m1. I found on brand new on Fb marketplace and I simply traded an old iPad for it. The thing has no fans has and that is one of the best upsides besides it’s power. I’ve already posted all around trying to get peoples attention on this but the fans on those macs are loud and even idle…. When recording vocals.. the quieter the better. I have been so pleased with the fact that silicon allows for a completely silent environment. I like using theta waves and such for focusing when doing art as it helps you reach a calmer and more attuned mind and I also have a vocal booth so I’m used to meditating and those fans overpower your vocal recording / add that frequency of the fan to your conscious 24/7 while it’s open. It’s just something really nice about it being gone. Your recordings will thank you too when you begin stacking vocals. Aside with that rant. Yeah bro. I’m an editor too for videos so editing music and videos are excellent for that MacBook Air. Another.. here this. UAD preamps / interfaces “real-time” is essentially these new silicon chips now. I don’t care what people complain about that online cause you can hear how close it is. I have a twin x interface too. I’m rocking 8gb of ram it’s wild I keep my drive clean as I’m working never get too loaded and I prefer using external drives for processing media files in general but that is from what I learned from the industry in processing good luck bro. I have a tower pc for gaming but I simply oc it with a old ryzen 5 2600 and a 6600 I got like 330 fps on splitgate so clearly macs aren’t for gaming but you can rock fun games on cheap builds too.
      Change that name and photo bro you ain’t wanna attract that as a persona trust cousin dude brother human. Dna is 90% receptive to sound and light.

Literally peaking to 100% while loading two instances of Serum. I'm planning to switch from windows to apple because of the better performance and the durability of apple computers. 😂 yeah… I don’t think it’s the type of machine you would, or should buy as your main computer if you spend $599 on one plugin.. so I loaded mainly stock plugins. But sure, you can run a couple of omnispheres with no problem.

    What u think about 2015 MacBook Pro with 512SSD HD and 16gb Ram for FL20, waves, Omnisphere 2, and Arcade. All of the programs will be mirrored from my hard drive to the new computer HD. The price is $400

    • @trackfammusic2979
      @trackfammusic2979  Год назад

      If it’s in good “working condition”, I would go for it. The 2015 was a great computer, The only downside is that it that it’s getting a little old now. But for $400 I would definitely say YES.

    I’m just starting off I’m seeing alot of the MacBook Pro 2017 is that one good and also what would you recommend I’m making music on fl and bandlab I just want to buy what I need the first time instead of keep upgrading

    • @trackfammusic2979

      Stay away from the MBP 2017, if you’re using FL studio (and Adobe products for design). There is a build flaw on many of them that makes Some of these 3rd party programs crack the speakers on the 2017. Happened several times for me before Apple eventually replaced it (instead of repairing and putting in the same flawed parts) for me but it was an insane process that took and INSANE amount of arguing and sending emails back and forth.

    Air m1 really worth it

    • @trackfammusic2979
      @trackfammusic2979  6 месяцев назад

      Depends on your needs. If you work on really big projects with tons of tracks plugins I wouldn’t get it. But perfect on the go for making beats etc. I’d say it’s a perfect complement if you have another computer. Personally I wouldn’t want it as my only computer.

      I wouldn’t recommend it, although specs wise it can definitely handle it. do your research on the exact model you are planning to get before buying. (SEE MY RESPONCE TO YOUR OTHER QUESTION BEFORE BUYING!!!)

      If purchasing a mac for music production, only worth considering m1 chips.

      Depends on if you you want to you the latest software and plugins. There will most likely be compatibility issues. And as far as processing power you may have a problem with that pretty soon, since it’s a 8 year old computer. But if you use old stuff and don’t update to newer OS you should be OK.
