Very helpful. I fell in my driveway, broke the femoral neck. I couldn't even lift my head the pain was so intense, nor could I let my leg down to lie flat. After realizing the situation and checking myself out, I began yelling for help. We 10 families all have 4 or more acres so are not close. My neighbor fortunately was taking out her garbage and sent over her daughter who as a former EMT understood to just make me comfortable as she could which meant putting a support against my hip and a flat pillow under my head and staying with me until the ambulance came. It's now been 9 months and I am doing great, finally was able to put on my socks with my leg over my thigh and I'm hiking in our mountains, mowing my grasses, etc. I cannot afford a life line type system so I wear my phone on a lanyard ALWAYS it also has a whistle attached. In a little pocket on the back of the holder is my Driver's license, medical insurance card. a credit card and a card with contacts and medical info. I also now always have the cane, trekking pole or walking stick in my hand even though I don't need the assistance but having it at the ready I can stop a fall. They are also a great self-defense device. I recommend every elder have a means of calling for help and a means of stopping a fall. A friend also arranged for me to message on Facebook at a set time. If he doesn't get that message he calls. If I don't answer he calls my neighbor or the sheriff.
My issue is my knees. They don't hurt at all walking or up and down the stair BUT putting weight on my patella on a hard wood floor is almost impossible due to the terrible pain. Unfortunately I live alone and ALL my floors are hardwood with zero carpets. Also, if I don't have shoes on the pain I have from my toes having weight put on them is just as bad as the knees. It is a terrible situation for me. I do leg exercises at the gym so my legs are stronger, and everything else, but the terrible pain on my knees and toes prevents me from moving much and I have spent hours laying on the floor until I finally make it to bed side and I can haul myself up on the bed. It is hell not being 18 anymore! lol Am 77 in case anyone cares.
Calling: First time I fell, phone was out of reach. 14 hours on the floor. Finally realized computer was within reach. Nobody I could think of had active email service (ex: hospital) EXCEPT THE SHERIFF's office. Emailed them, they were here in 20 minutes. Said they check it fairly often.
I was happy with the description of this video. The contents were good, too, but I was hoping you’d address one more thing. If I end up on the floor for any reason, I cannot get up because I can’t put any pressure on my knees. If I could, the rest would be a piece of cake. Also I just want to make a suggestion. Technology has come a long way since the first life alert type products. One of these advancements is the Amazon Echo (Alexa.) I have an Echo in range of my voice from anywhere in my house. Alexa can call anyone on my phone contact list. There are many other possible tech options for a situation like this.
I fell while I was in the garden so there was nothing to help me up. I am 80 and was surprised to find how weak my arms are. When I fully recover, l shall work on some light weightlifting to try to strengthen my arms.
Great advise guys👍I fell over in my over the bath shower and after getting over the initial shock of the ordeal which was similar to being in a car crash I laid there for a while thinking about different scenarios looking at things solid that I could grab on to and there was nothing apart from the handles for getting in and out of the bath which were far too high for me to get a hold of .I then stuck my feet over the lip of the bath and had to swing myself backwards and forwards like a pendulum until I could grab the edge of the bath and work my way out.😩 by this time the floor had flooded because shower rose had fallen onto the floor .I didn’t break any bones but some bruises . It was quite a long night for me😩
The light system is a great idea. I have it set up with my neighbors. Thank you for posting. This video has been very helpful. I tripped on a pair of shoes that were sitting in the entryway and didn’t know how to get up. I remembered that I watched this video and was able to safely get up.
This was an eye opener to me. I fall during dog agility practice., Am working on reactive dynamic balance. My first reaction and that of my team mates is to get me off the ground. Now I understand that I should do a calm self check starting from the neck. Got it.
Look forward to the video on helping others get up- I moved into a 55 and over community and have had 3 neighbors knock on my door to ask to go help someone get up who had fallen and I would like to know the best way .
@@marylynncrosson273 As a former first responder I well know the consequences of lying on the floor for a very long time alone and scared, A fall with an inability to get up is a medical emergency.
I fell last night. My issue is getting my left leg up. Crawled to couch leaned over right leg (strong leg) up but I couldn't get my left leg up. It kept siding back. My son got there and helped support my left side and he got me on couch. I hD stroke 2 years ago and have fallen approx 4 times. Your video was help full . Left side is weak
So VA gave me one of the alert buttons. Being a tad arrogant for a retired trauma nurse, I thought I didn't need it and wouldn't use it. UNTIL my MS butt hit the floor. Even though I fall about twice a month (who counts these events?) and I still haven't needed to use the alert, the tips here are enough to keep me working on strength and weight-bearing. To the vet who said the device was 20 feet away- swallow your pride and wear it. I keep mine in a pocket and if I am wearing clothing without pockets, I wear it on a very nice (but discrete looking) and sturdy chain. It's longer than for a necklace, so I don't get strangled with it, hopefully-but tucked inside a t-shirt, blouse, sweater-whatever-I wear it. My taxes help pay for 911 and emergency services, and even though to this date I have not needed them to help, one day I might. There's nothing wrong with those big buff guys just itching to help the old bat up off the floor. They're awesome and I have nothing but respect for all of them, for all they do. B&B are equally cool for putting up a video on recovering your feet. Lately, I am actually levering down to the floor in different places, like the bathroom, kitchen, yard, driveway, patio-and then identifying what I can use to help in rising. Practice, practice, practice before you need it but the next time I drop like a rock, I will have a plan. (I hope!) Thanks guys, this is so very helpful!
Phones have to be charged. Life alert pendants & bracelets need to be charged. The longer it takes to get a response or for them to find you, the power is going to drain. Especially if it wasn’t fully charged when you grabbed it to go to the kitchen, bathroom etc. So it’s not always pride that’s the issue.
I have a 10 yr old knee replacement & am 8 wks out on my other knee replacement. I stumbled & fell a month ago & pretty much did as shown except for getting on my knees. I used my upper body strength, got to the couch & pulled myself up-with a lot of moaning & groaning I might add. I’m getting older, 63 now, & realized I’ve got to slow down & be more careful. 🤷🏻♀️
😊 The help I need. I will try them. My WORST pain is when I wake up. I have 2 knee replacements 22 years old now. I have lumbar spondylothesis. 10 years. Always on Percocet. ❤
Getting one limb at a time into a crawling position was what I was intuitively thinking was the best option... but... ... I'm scared that my Dad is not strong enough to even do that.
PLEASE PLEASE demonstrate how to push a dislocated shoulder back into place. I dislocated my shoulder (running a big tiller after a precious rotator cuff tear) and a neighbor called the ambulance. The ER medics said they would not touch it themselves. Said I had to go to the ER. Thirty minute + drive. I managed to shove it back into place pressing against a wall because the pain was so agonizing I could not wait that long. It is a REALLY necessary emergency procedure everyone should know.
Wife has one arm she can't use due to stroke and would not be able to hold her self up once she got rolled over. Any suggestions. Maybe a video for those with arms or legs they can't use
Thank you! I will show this to my mother and see if she can do this next time she falls. It must be frustrating not to be able to use your knees or arms to get up.
it's frustrating not to have the use of your hands or feet from some other injury, stroke and such, and then try to get up ;) i practice all the time. like a fire drill.
Problem with that solution is it requires quite a bit of knee flexibility, which many people don't have. I've been working on getting mine back so I can ride a bike again, but even after a year I still can't kneel.
Can you upload soon the next video how to help a patient who has fallen I have my OSCAE next month ... I want to prepare this scenario for a test I am student PT
Love your videos! Your the Bob Rosses of taking care of oneself. I tell anyone that will listen at work and the gym about you guys. Can I request a progression of exercises to achieve for a front lever from a pull up position, from your unique perspective?
Having fallen twice I'd say you made this look so easy. Well it's not. But the chair is the only way I could get up. I haven't had a fall in a year now [knock on wood]. Fibromyalgia after 20 years They say it's not progressive. You could have fooled me.
I would stress finding something to cushion your knee. I realized it was the pain in my knee that made getting up hard.in the house I did pull a cushion and I got up ok with the knee cushioned. One time I used my handbag,it worked like a charm. I decided that if I had to,I'd take off my clothing to form a cushion if I had to.
I usually just jump and land on my feet, but when I broke my leg, I had to be carried. Also, my hip slammed into a metal bar one time at 15 mph, and it hurt a lot to the point that I practically couldn’t walk on it. However, I was still able to get up, and it healed within 5 days.
Thank yall so much for this video. Been waiting a long time! Please include wgat muscles you need to strenghthen to be able to do this. Im a spondy n i want to go for walks but im afraid
what happens when the stronger leg is the one that's hurt? I did that. My right knee was bad. and I fell (tripped over the rug... yup) landed on the bad knee, but weak knee was too weak to hold my body so I fell all the way down. thankfully it was right in front of the couch so I had that to help myself up. Knee blew up like a balloon. went to walk in medical next day. I have crappy state insurance. they said, "Oh it's sprained" gave me an ace bandage and sent me home.
With me & all my physical problems, my overall balance is awful. I have spinal stenosis & spondylitis. (( Arthritis in your neck, upper & mid spine, also known as your cervical or thoracic spine, can compress your spinal cord. This is called spinal stenosis. When this occurs, the nerve signals don't travel efficiently from the brain to your feet & cause you to lose your balance.)) So, once I'm 'down,' I'm really down. It takes a very strong man, or, maybe two average men to help me up. Any helpful thoughts are definitely welcome & appreciated. 👍
I fell one time and I tried to get up using my couch. The couch kept moving since I have wood laminate floors. I purchased some rubber pads for benith my furniture. Wear a Lively around my neck on a chain. It has GPS and is water proof. I live alone. No one checks on me.
Thank you for saying this. I am on the floor as I speak. It's only been 40 minutes so far I'm 73 and a half . lol I'm not broken but the muscle for my left hip is helpless. I will survive.
I can't put any weight on my knees, so I butt scoot over to a chair or bed or sofa, with my back to them, raise my arms behind me, and pull myself up with my arms/elbows which are on the chair. Hope that's understandable.
I slipped on the ice like this, but I was outside behind my car. Glasses ended up under the car. My head hit the bumper. There was no chair around. Tips for this outdoor winter situation?
Just stand up. You don’t need to be able to see to stand up. Also, as for catching yourself from a slip/type of fall, land into a push-up position and then lower into a plank to ease out the impact, and if you’re going backwards or sideways, rotate in midair to land facing forwards as best as possible. Also, if there’s something “in the way” of where your hands would land, then it’s actually better because you can use it to your advantage and just fall on that so you don’t have to fall as far.
I’ve fallen indoors and outdoors. It doesn’t matter because nobody sees you. I keep my phone with me all the time. When I fall I try to land on my shoulder and protect my head with my arm. Going down stairs is a slow process holding onto the banister doing one step at a time. Never lean forward going downstairs. Going upstairs is different.
This was great! I fell a couple of years ago and it took me 2-1/2 hours to get off the floor. I can't put weight on my knee - both are bone on bone. What saved me was I was able to grab a coat from the closet and bunch it up under my knees. By grabbing the lip of the kitchen sink I was able to pull myself up after several tries. Any other suggestions that might work? Many thanks!
Good thinking! For more ideas, have you ever seen this good video? ruclips.net/video/4ETgQD8QhZs/видео.html It's called How to Get Up from the Floor After a Fall - MacGyver Style! By homeability.com
If you don’t have much knee range of motion, you can still just hand walk up into standing position starting in push-up position & also use a table fro assistance.
I wonder too. For a year I'm not usoosed to lift more thjs 30 to 50 pounds as a surgical restriction. I assume I weight more than that so may have issues lifting myself up.
Simplist way to get up after a fall : turn ove nand crawl to a chair, pull yourself up and sit in chair. That is what I did when I fwll and broke my hip. Was sitting in chair when ambulance arrived.
This is all well and good if you can get on your knees, but how do you advocate getting up without having get on your knees? Someone with severe arthritis may not be able to kneel to facilitate getting up. Is there another technique that doesn't use the knees?
Scoot backwards on your butt. If you have books you can get to or cushions or pillows, even clothing you can lift your rear onto a low stack then make another stack, like a low stair case until you are high enough to get into a chair or onto a coffee table using just your arms. If you are only lifting your rear 4 to 6 inches it doesn't take a lot of arm strength. From that position, evn though it will hurt some you can push with your legs as well.
Hey Bob and Brad, what about if you are 2 miles from home out for a walk with no phone on a residential sidewalk and fall? 2 years ago I was doing my usual walk on Spring morning, was looking up at some birds in the gorgeous blue sky and didn't notice the 2 inch rise in the sidewalk. I am a fast walker and I hit that rise hard and went sailing with nothing but the concrete sidewalk to grab. I dislocated my shoulder . Had to brush myself off with my left arm, put my shoulder back in place and walk back home. Trouble is 2 years later my neck is bothering me and I get vertigo from time to time.
1) Go to the doctor to get that all checked out. 2) How do you trip on a 2 inch incline while speed walking? 3) How did you dislocate your shoulder from that?
Dear boys, I have only one side that works and fall too often. I rarely hurt myself, I first learned how to fall safely. I need to practice getting up. how can I do that?
I helped my mother in law get up by putting a chair near her. She managed very well but I wish that I had put a pillow down for her knees! We don’t realize the struggles of the elderly and all that they suffer.
Show do you suggest removing oneself from a nice warm bath in a classic bathtube? Made the end of the soothing water for arthritic pain but had to call my devoted husband to assist in getting my naked body out of that tub. Sad.
If you can reach towels, you can roll them into a tigth ball or tube to raise your hips up to gain some leverage to get over the side or to perch on the side and stand up.. Everyone should have support bars and/or shower chair within reach as a preventative.
That is too sad! She should not be living in a dwelling .... near steep basement stairs! .... Life threatening! Simple living, not much clutter, stairs! ..... helps!

Do a screenshot of using that arm tuck….don’t forget…!! First off…the arm is out of your way! Secondly….it gives a boost up of two inches. I’m new to learning…your forearm and upper arm would love to help you up….ask! It’s like the bottom of a rocking chair…just as sturdy. Screenshoot how he tucks right arm beneath him. The screenshot goes to Photos…you'll see it often there.
At the moment, I have a broken leg in a cast, 😬 and I'm temporarily in a wheelchair. It's Summer, and I would like to lay out at the beach, or on the grass at some park, but I don't know how to get up without putting any weight on one leg, I just can't figure it out. I can use my knee, though. I'm not as strong as some permanent wheelchair users, and I'm kind of heavy, like 250lbs. I try and use crutches as much as possible, but I use the ones that have support for underarms, not armpits. (European kind) Could you make a video about that? Thanks!! ❤️
Hi guys. I experienced a problem when trying to get up from a fall. It seems that my body locks up and can't stay up. Ever hear of anything like that? Thanks.
What can you do when you have had 4! Knee replacements and you can,'t get up on your knees as it is too painful and you also have an elbow replacement that left it somewhat weak. I am only 4'9" too.
First,I need to lose weight and work on my flexibility .I have fallen in the past year 3 times and yes I sit on the floor thinking🤔..... my problem is the knees, but I'm thinking the cushion is a great idea.If I had stair case nearby I could kind of crawl with my big ass and sit and get up. Thanks for the tips!!
What if you weigh 340 pounds and you got Parkinson’s disease and your joints tighten up. you fall down and you can’t move? You had both of your knees replaced With a knee replacement surgery?
The jump cuts in the video are getting pretty bad now. It’s almost Max Headroom-ish at times. Did you change the video codec recently? 🤔 This is a new phenomenon. Greta information as always. 😁🖖

When you are lying on your back, instead of rolling OVER your (right) arm, lifting that arm over your head will make the rolling much easier.

God, how I love a man who knows how to really use a comma! 😘
Thank yall so much for this video. Been waiting a long time! Please include wgat muscles you need to strenghthen to be able to do this. Im a spondy n i want to go for walks but im afraid
I fell outside 2 days ago, got to one knee up and nothing near. So traumatic. Got help after 3 minutes, scratches and bruises, swollen arm. Im ok.
what happens when the stronger leg is the one that's hurt?
When this occurs, the nerve signals don't travel efficiently from the brain to your feet & cause you to lose your balance.))
So, once I'm 'down,' I'm really down.
It takes a very strong man, or, maybe two average men to help me up.
Any helpful thoughts are definitely welcome & appreciated. 👍
Excellent instructions. You guys have such useful information. Thank you.
I fell one time and I tried to get up using my couch. The couch kept moving since I have wood laminate floors. I purchased some rubber pads for benith my furniture. Wear a Lively around my neck on a chain. It has GPS and is water proof. I live alone. No one checks on me.
I’m on the floor...for gods sake..get on with it!!!
Thank you for saying this.
I am on the floor as I speak.
It's only been 40 minutes so far
I'm 73 and a half . lol
I'm not broken but the muscle for my left hip is helpless.
I will survive.
@@eijonasson It's been 6 days- are you up yet? I hope you're up n back to doing parkour n dancing! Stay safe.
Fast forward duh.
Yes I need those tips too
I think the doughnut may have helped afterwards.
@@nabranestwistypuzzler7019not everyone can "just stand up".
Great video guys
I’ve fallen indoors and outdoors. It doesn’t matter because nobody sees you. I keep my phone with me all the time. When I fall I try to land on my shoulder and protect my head with my arm. Going down stairs is a slow process holding onto the banister doing one step at a time. Never lean forward going downstairs. Going upstairs is different.
4:42 it really hurts when you roll on your arm...I tried to see how it works for me...to help my elderly dad off the floor...
These are great tips. Thanks guys.

Wdym by none on bone?
I have limited rom in my knees due to arthritis. Falling is a fear......
If you don’t have much knee range of motion, you can still just hand walk up into standing position starting in push-up position & also use a table fro assistance.
If you can get through all the schmoozing and garbage, the GETTING UP part starts @ 4:20.
Great video guys but wow I need me that donut cushion 🥴😂
So, what to do when you can't support your body on your arms--both elbow and 1 shoulder replacement.
I wonder too. For a year I'm not usoosed to lift more thjs 30 to 50 pounds as a surgical restriction. I assume I weight more than that so may have issues lifting myself up.
@@itsbevinallison You're not lifting your whole body. Still may be hard though. Ask doctor for advice! Or go slow. Or wear that device they mentioned.
Excellent video, thanks very much !!!!
Hi guys, I have fallen on a hard floor with nothing to grab to pul up. I had a heck of a time but finally made it upright. Suggestions

Of course, a sturdy chair is conveniently placed nearby
Great video, thanks guys...
Hi guys, my arms are weak and I have thick thighs, what do I do?
@Kathleen How awful! Why on earth have you not been seeing a good Chiropractor to adjust your neck and a PT?
1) Go to the doctor to get that all checked out.
2) How do you trip on a 2 inch incline while speed walking?
3) How did you dislocate your shoulder from that?
What is you have bad shoulders and knee pain from knee replacements
Dear boys, I have only one side that works and fall too often. I rarely hurt myself, I first learned how to fall safely. I need to practice getting up. how can I do that?
I to love the jingle. I sing along.
I helped my mother in law get up by putting a chair near her.
She managed very well but I wish that I had put a pillow down for her knees!
We don’t realize the struggles of the elderly and all that they suffer.
I have replacements of both knees and cannot kneel on my hands and knees. What is my alternative?
Brads got a case of the scoots, reminds me of my cat when she got worms.... I'm way too baked for this tonight guys....
My elderly mother fell down the basement stairs and laid there at the bottom for 2 days.
Janet Dorien I'm so sorry to hear that! Is she ok now?
My Grandmother fell in the tub and was there for almost 3 weeks !!
Ross Miles So was the reason that she survived and didn’t dehydrate to death because of the fact that she drank the tub water?
That is too sad! She should not be living in a dwelling .... near steep basement stairs! .... Life threatening! Simple living, not much clutter, stairs! ..... helps!
Patrice Marie I purposely fall down the stairs for fun.
*Help! I've fallen and I can't get up!!*
Here grandma, I have the perfect video for you ❤️😄❤️

What if you have 1 replaced knee?
OKY, this video was very informative, Thank you! now, if my wife is alone, and she falls, and cant get up, but if she coiuld or could call 911. and they come, but the doors are locked. do they have to smash the door locks to get in?Thiats nearly happened to my wife, but the door was unlocked when the rescuue people came.Anetas husband!
Always good tips.
Thanks!! ❤️
I have had both knees replaced. How would I get off the floor if I can't use my knees?
How to get up with painful knee joint failure?
What if you have bad knees?
what do u do if u cannot get on to ur knees ?? my mum fell and coudnt get on to her knees as they was 2 painful
I tell all my neighbors to carry their smart phone at all times.
My last fall my knees and elbows were really bruised and bleeding.
THANKS
The jump cuts in the video are getting pretty bad now. It’s almost Max Headroom-ish at times. Did you change the video codec recently? 🤔 This is a new phenomenon. Greta information as always. 😁🖖
