86 here. Fell in my backyard. Felt that as long as I was down I might as well do something useful so I crawled around and weeded my whole yard. Finally got to the gate and pulled myself up. Yard looks great...and so do I.
I am 91 years old and recently I fell in my driveway. I was lying face down on the ground. I was able to place my arms firmly under my shoulders and straighten my legs (down dog) ! From there l could hold on to my knees and straighten up. Wow! Those ballet classes from my youth came in handy.
I've taken two falls recently. I'm 74 yrs. old and overweight. I have Arthritis in both knees. I scooted to a coffee table both times, put my elbows on the table and pushed up with my toes! It was hard, but it worked😅
I fell 4 days ago. Thank God my adult son and daughter live with me. I was going upstairs to my room to go to bed. I use a cane and I try to be very careful but… I had my cellphone in one hand and the cane in the other. I had made it up 5 stairs when I thought I was going trip over my nightgown. I lost my footing and fell backwards. Thankfully I didn’t break anything but I’m pretty sure I had/have a concussion. As I tumbled I landed with my head striking my head very hard. My kids were very near and they ran to my rescue. I’m 73 and I had more than a few. Not all of them were recent but it won’t get any better. 😢 I have used your suggestion of crawling to a chair or a little footstool and thankfully again I was able to get up. I’m very glad that you made this informative video. I wish all, young and not so young a very safe and happy Christmas.
I’m 75, not a fall risk, but that didn’t stop me from falling on both knees last month. The door bell rang, and our dog ran to the door, but first he hit me from behind and took out my legs below the knee. I went down hard. I sat still for a moment, turned over onto my knees, and managed to pull myself up with the help of a nearby table. Just do it slowly. Fortunately, all OK, just bruised knees, wrists were OK too. So now when door bell rings, I let the dog get there first. My dog did the same thing to my daughter a couple of months ago, when she sat him. Our dear pups can be a hazard.
I fell in the park lately. The woman who found me got down on all fours so Icould use her body to get up. She tried this after I was unable to get up using her outstretched hand. I’m very grateful to her. It worked.
*Roll your whole body* to a sturdy item attached to the ground. Ideally, use a curbside or a staircase. Then on your left side, use your dominant right hand to push yourself up. Or onto your right side to use your left hand. Swing out your legs and sit up. Slide backwards to sit on a step higher than you or slide forwards to sit on a curb or step lower. If it is too high or low, take off a piece of clothing, roll it up, and kneel on it. Take your time. Use your upper body strength and hoist upwards and hold on to what is nearest, such as a tree or bench. Sit and catch your breath. Rolling is the best way to move. Crawling is too hard on the knees.
I am 93 years old and I thank you for the enlightening help. Thank you. You may be surprised at the corners of the world you're helping - I am from Guyana.
As i have bad knees (like kneeling on glass) i am thrilled to learn an alternative method. Ive only fallen once but that was enough to scare me. Thank you so much
Seventy-nine year old. I needed to learn these processes. I'm exercising muscles to help me take these steps. I think your work is critical and is a gift. Thank you.
I fell last year in front of my house. I had to crawl over to the porch, then I was able to slowly pull myself onto the edge of it. Then, leaning on my hands, I scooted my way to the porch post and managed to pull myself up and onto the steps. I crawled to the front door, managed to pull up so I could open it. Then I slid into the house and over to a chair. This took about a half hour. I was badly shaken, but OK. Since then I have lost twenty pounds and become extremely cautious. Now, I’m doing all the balance exercises and I ordered a Walker so I can get more fit. I’m also taking many supplements to heal this long Covid to stop the weakness and dizziness I experience. Thank you. By the way, cars were passing by my house where I was fully visible. No one ever stopped.😢
Thanks Doctor ,I am 90yo and sitting on the edge of my bed was sliding down on the floor ,I was very surpriced how hard it was to slide to a chair and eventually was able to sit in it ,your method will certaindly help next time
Yes, my elderly brother and I have an agreement, we don't go down any stairs without using a handrail. We don't go into basements or bathrooms without bringing a cell phone. I bought a lanyard for my cell phone so it can hang from my neck and I have a new-ish iPhone so it will call 911 for me if I fall or get into a crash. Apple watch will do the same.
I'm 76 and this was an extremely valuable video. I took a course in fall prevention several years ago and it was great for prevention, but now I know ways to deal with it when prevention didn't work. I'm now a subscriber.
An excellent video! Used to practice getting down and up off the floor! Seem to have forgotten to do it ! Have fallen twice lately getting out of passenger side of car! Could not get up and driver could not hear me! Helped up by passing stranger! Now leave car door open! Need to warn others about problems! If we are lucky may develop all sorts of difficulties with mobility! Don’t be shy or proud! Life is about giving and receiving!
Our dogs thought it fun to sneak up behind me (82 years) and knock me over and then continue their romp across our lawn. I landed on my chest, knee, and elbow on ice. I took my time to lay there a while and check for injuries. I had my walking poles, and the dogs were no help at all, as I slowly got my feet under me - like downward dog, and worked upward. It really pays to work at keeping fit! Thank you for your labor of love to help us here!!
This is a very helpful video. What I've done since having two knee replacements is work with my physiotherapist practising getting up from the floor. That way he is able to make sure I am using safe movements & can offer suggestions, & generally give me a safe place to practise. He has also taught me how to safely get down on the floor, should I ever be in a situation where that might be necessary, for example, if in a fire to get low to the floor to get out, or to clean out a low cupboard, or to garden. Thank you for this. Samantha-jane, Calgary, Canada
Can you share the methods. I also have 2 artificial knees. Can NOT kneel. Asked 4 pt to teach me how to get up. Told sorry no way just don't fall - wtf!! What can I say don't ever sign up w Kaiser!
I was taught in a First Aid Corse done by Red Cross to lay in place and do a self injury test. Find out what hurts and what does not. When you have that information you now know what parts of your body have not been injured and can be used in your getting up. Once I had to make a sling to immobilize my arm as I had broken my shoulder. Luckily I was in the garden and had twine I could use to make a sling to support my arm while sliding over to a garden chair to support myself while getting on my feet then sitting in the chair to rest. I try to keep my arms, torso and legs strong as much as I can I am 76
Thank you so much! Not that I plan to fall ever again like I did last night in the dark as I got up from bed to turn on a fan, the second method looks promising for me as I cannot kneel. After 45 minutes on the floor trying and failing at every thing I could think of, my once incredibly strong, 6’4” now tattered Superman of a 79 year old husband insisted we call our son. Of course, he and my husband easily lifted me up under my arms. I have NEVER felt more grateful to be standing on my own two feet in my life! Gratitude! ❤
I'm fairly certain that a significant number of falls can be avoided by being in a little better condition. I'm 85 and I "work out" a few times a week with resistance bands to strengthen my main muscles. Don't get me wrong... I'm no athlete... I hate exercising. But I can assure you that a bit of time spent doing a few simple leg & balance exercises will make you feel much more secure on your feet.
Right you are! After learning I have severe osteoporosis I enrolled in a strength and balance class and do daily exercises at home to avoid falls and strengthen bones. Even though I had been walking regularly, my leg muscles had become weak just from age-related muscle loss. Cardio exercise isn't enough. Specific exercises, especially using weights or resistance to rebuild muscles are necessary.
So what if you have such bad rheum arthritis you cant push on your wrists or knees? I put my whole lower are parallel to tje ground amd push up w that.
What a great video Doug - thanks for the tips! I hadn't thought of ONLY getting to a chair and making sure to SIT for a few minutes. And the point about getting back up SOON is good to know.
My friend fell in her yard while pegging out her washing. So cud not get up, neighbour's and her husband out at work. It started to rain and she lay there for 6 hours. Her husband came home and called an ambulance. She had fractured her leg. The moral of the story is always to take your cell phone with you to the garden if you are alone.
Absolutely get a flip phone that fits in your pocket and keep it with you at all times. I know of 2 people who fell in their bathroom and had to lay there for hours. And plug in the ph # for non emergency help.
@@elainelily9910. After a fall in the bathroom lodged my sister behind the toilet and she couldn’t reach her phone, it took hours to get herself out of the situation. She proceeded to sew pockets inside every pair of pants that didn’t have pockets already so she could always have her phone with her. This was before being diagnosed with Menieres disease and and was experiencing random bouts of severe vertigo.
I have had several falls, but have had three knee replacements in recent years, so it’s very Painful to actually get onto my knees as you mention. Plus I’m a larger lady, due to lack of mobility since surgeries. The staircase idea is better…I have a little footstool I try and get one buttock cheek at a time onto. My husband always panics, which makes me worse, but I do try…… think I will have to perhaps invest in some mats like those shown, to move around with me. Having falls when your older is so scary, as I worry I’m going to break something!! As. My late mother in law when in her 90’s said…”it’s no fun getting older! 😢☹️” Thankyou for trying to help us…much appreciated, bless you. And wishing you and all your viewers a Very Happy New Year! 🙋♀️👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍😘💕🥰💐🫖☕️🫶xx
Thank you! I've had several falls in the past 6-9 months. Due to bilateral TKR's I can't kneel to get back up. The second option looks very doable and I will be sharing it with my therapist at my next physical therapy appointment.
I am 81 yrs old, and have diabetic neropathy from knees down. It causes much pain. I have fallen so much. broke some bones on the way. Use a wheelchair most times now. Still able to walk short distances. Will remember the 2nd process, if Iever should fall again. Blessings to all, and may we NEVER FALL!! Thanks for putting this out.
Oh thank you SO much for this post! Not only do you never think you'll become 'senior ' but you never think you'll ever have a fall! My balance is crap! I stumble and fall frequently, (so far I've fractured c1 and c2 and cracked a vertebra, and that's not counting all the bruises! So it's great to find helpful advice, thanks again!
Hello! Yes, it happens to us all. You would really benefit from doing some balance challenging exercises to reduce your future chance of falling. Most people in your situation avoid things that challnege their balacne, which leads to it worsening. My channel is dedicated to showing safe and simple exercises that challenge and improve balance. Plase let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you so much for this video. I saw this awhile ago. I fall easily and actually able to use the stair method to get off the floor. I used 2 decorative pillows from my sofa. It was difficult but it worked! I'm so grateful to you for your video😊❤❤❤
I am 67 and have MS. In the past few years I have fallen (my knees give out and I collapse). One thing I had done because my partner couldn't get me up. I had him bring me a chair out to ware I collapsed. I was then able to get myself off the ground. Another time when I was sitting on the ground weeding the garden. I couldn't get up. Instead off scooting. I brought my hands in and rolled across the lawn 20 or so feet to the porch and got myself up. I am always practicing my rolling and getting off the floor.
I recently fell twice and used both methods! The first time, it was in the garage, and fortunately, I was able to use stuff from the garage to pull myself up! Yes, I took baby steps until I got high enough to lift myself up! The second time was in my bedroom! This recovery was easier because I was on carpet, and I pulled myself up using my bed! 😮😮 6:22
This video helped me a lot replace my two knees I cannot bend nothing I Fall In the Park who is my dog I was 45 minutes there until a guy I asked him if he can help me for the reason I don't go out of my house without my cellular thank you to show me if I fall in my house I have a lot of pillows in my house and I always have the cellular in my neck I would like to see more videos about that
A FAINT can look like a FALL. I have had falls too and perhaps we should consider a medical alarm or maybe keep a mobile handy always. My faint though occurred getting up out of a very warm bed around midnight. Blood pressure plummeted and I woke up however long later - inverted jammed in a corner and injured by colliding with sharp cornered furniture as I fell. I was bleeding. But strong furniture was handy, and so I got up and stumbled to have a COLD shower - which shrunk blood vessels, thus restoring pressure. That impressed me just how vulnerable we can be. But I live alone, and so the falls down steps and outside bring other concerns. A good video - I just thought that raising the faint and provoke thought about blood pressure being something to bear in mind.
This video is useful for me.I am 73 years old and i fell down a few times and could not get up. Then others came and lifted me. I am suffering from certain nervous disorder and could not walk without walker and i lost my balance. Now after seeing this video i am confident and understood how to get up easily . Thanks to the uploader of this video.
Step one: if you are as debilitated as the man in the park in this video, just don't go into spaces with nobody else around. Don't stroll in the trees, stroll near the playground or the rose garden. Stay where you can call to someone.
lol I'm disabled and a homeowner, and I live alone. And this is a rural area. During the day, if I'm home, there's probably nobody to call out to because everybody else is at work. At any rate, and this is the critical detail, you were never in any of my chains of command before I was retired. You're not now, either.
Ironically I came across this video a few hours after a fall. I was glad to see that the way I got up was pretty much what you recommended do. Fingers crossed that my belief that I didn’t seriously injure myself turns out to be the case. Now to watch a video on how to properly walk with a rollator so something like what just happened doesn’t happen again.
One method I used at a park where I trip and fell from a tree root, I was able to skoot back into a picnic bench and was able to get my hands on the seat of bench, push up with both arms and both legs so I could sit on the bench. After sitting for a while I was able to get up an walk around and clean up from my earlier fall. I am weak in both arms and legs from severe back issues and I am72.
I fell in a bus station just over a week ago and I couldn’t even raise my upper body with my arms to sitting position. The bus driver and another guy lifted me up and got me to a bench. It’s the first time I’ve fallen. I have been reluctant to admit I’m getting old and didn’t want to have to use a walking stick to aid with my balance. I got one now though. I had come off a bus journey of just over an hour and forgot to stand and stretch my legs for a minute or two before walking. As soon as I stepped off a kerb to go fetch my bag from the bus hold, my legs just disappeared from under me. It was so quick and unexpected, I was on the ground in a second. Funny thing is, I’d successfully walked down a 17th century spiral staircase that morning without any problem.
Thats a scary situation. Many poeple tell me the same thing, its so hard to get up once you fall. Good thing you had help! You would benefit from some balane challenge exercises. Particulary ones that involve steps.
Very interesting video. The other day I had a fall for no reason. I was climbing on to the footpath from the road, a height of say 4-5 inches. I put my right foot on and lifted the left when the right foot slipped and I fell on to the footpath and trying to get up I rolled on to the side twice since I had stuff in both my hands. My left knee and left arm were injured. I'm 75 and walk daily 6.5 km in the morning, no problems, and yet🙂
Most of us older people have fallen more than once and already know the best way to get up,, It always helps if you have something to use, I don't carry a cane I carry a walking stick about 5 ft. long.. I can use it to get up by pulling myself up on the stick
I fell in my camper and was looking for something to use to get some height. I've had 2 knee replacements so I didn't want to put them on the floor. I had a couple small laundry baskets and moved them near my chair. It made a good soft cushion and I put the 2nd basket right in front of the chair. It was tricky to do since the 2 baskets were too high for me to get on, but 1 1/2 baskets worked - just high enough to get my butt on the pile of laundry and dragged myself up onto the chair. When I'm outside gardening I use a kneeling bench with the seat high. If I lose my balance and tip it over, I have about 3 inches of padded and strong metal seat that I can set on the ground, put my knees on it and use the u-shaped legs to get one of the knees bent, straighten it then do the other. It's a great piece if you want to be outside and still can be safe. Thanks for your methods of getting up.
thank you for this video, my grandma fell today. she’s a bigger lady so knees are not an option for her but the stair method is definitely something we should try in the future.
I had a friend that fell. She was on the floor for 8 hours and went to a nursing home. A person in my town fell. Broke his hip and lay out in the hot sun for several hours. He was flown out by helicopter. Survived his surgery but died during the night from a blood clot. Another friend fell in her garage but was able to get herself up by using her car bumper. So do those balance and leg strength exercises. Don’t want you falling.
Thanks. This seems good and useful. I feel there are also possible dangers when helping up someone who has fallen so may I suggest a video guiding those who are helping fallen people to get up: to do so in a way that does not harm. Probably there would be different precautions to be taken depending on the type of fall and injuries so it wouldn't be an easy subject to tackle but it would be useful. I discovered your channel very recently so for all I know there may already be videos on the subject; I shall scan the titles soon. Thanks for the good video and my regards.
@@jacquelynkirby1442 thanks. The only thing I worry about is if the hip bone is broken so perhaps it would be prudent to ask the fallen person whether it hurts, after making whatever efforts one is making in a tentative way: no firm strong effort straightway. Generally under the armpits seems good.
And this exact scenario happened a month back : a friend’s husband missed the curb coming out of the coffee place & she tried to “ catch “ his fall but ended up with both of them on the ground. A police officer eventually drove up & someone must have witnessed them on the ground & called for help.
definitely some good ideas. wish though he addressed stroke patients who often have left or right side hemiparesis. in simpler words the left or right arm can’t contribute to the movement.
What muscles are weaken causing you not to get from from a fall? Also what exercises can be done to strengthen these areas of weakness? I don’t fall but at time I sit on the floor to do something and it is difficult for me to get up easily.
I fell in my bathroom and tried to kneel but my arthritis in knees and hips prevented me getting on to my knees. After about 15 minutes trying to kneel I managed to "bum walk" to my bed to grab a pillow and kneel on that. Luckily I was then up in seconds by grabbing the bed frame. Very scary though and it took me a long time to stop shaking.
You think you know, but this is very helpful, all his video's are very helpful when you are the "caregiver" .These things seem very simple, but believe me, they are not.
I can get up from the floor w/o support. I get on my knees, raise one knee, back foot curl toes forward so your ties point toward head. Press down with hands on the one knee. My dr said falls cone from weak ankles. Do ankle circles or sit on chair and weight on knees then raise heels. Also there are physical therapy cousins to use for balance practice. Heel dips off a button stair works well too.
When I was sick and very weak, falling on my back in the shower was traumatic. I could not roll over or sit up, but in fin, was able to use my legs to push me out and to a couch, to use to stand. Since then, I put a 45 deg rail in the shower and beside the toilet.
Thank you so much……what a great video. All the others I watched described the kneeling method….useless if you just can’t do it. Your scoop method makes such a lot of sense. You’re a lifesaver 👏🤗
Excellent suggestions. I have bad knees so the scoot method sounds great. But I also think that anyone who is alone should wear a fanny pack all the time with a phone in it to call if you need help. My husband is almost deaf so it is like living alone.
Fantastic,, i have a knee replacement,,, this helped very much,,, they told me never to kneel on that knee, but nevr told me how to get up... i was near steps so that helped... do more videos please.. !!!!!!!
I had a massive stroke in 2021 which resulted to left side paralysis despite almost 2 years of intensive rehab, doctors said my dosahikities were permanent. But I didn't believe that. I could now eat normally. Can speak clearly and walk compensatorily with a leg brace and a cane. I exercise daily and wish I could walk more but I'm afraid to go out alone as I had several falls and I don't know how to get up alone without assistance. I do walk at home but our apart isn't that big. We live on the 2nd floor (1st floor in Europe) and I still need to go down 22 steps. My husband helps me but on days he has to work, I would like to go out and walk more. I have nj problem with the stairs. I have gained enough confidence to go up and down and feel quite safe holding on to the banister. Im 57 now and hope to "really" walk before my next birthday. It would be great to leatn how to get up by myself and without a chair. I would practice that until zi get confident zi could do ig on mg own. I even ordred knee foam pads to make it easier to get on my knees :).
After gbs I had very little strength in my legs so practiced crawling to the sofa or bed, rising to kneeling, then rolling onto sofa or bed. From there I could sit up without the use of my lower legs

I am 97 and have lost much of my sense of balance and most of the strength in my arms and legs. I have also had both knees replaced. I have fallen a few times and have found that the best thing to do first is to somehow get onto your knees. The next thing to do is try to get one foot flat on the floor, then with the help of your arms, try to straighten that leg. If you can crawl to a chair or other furniture that will help a lot. I used to lift weights but I stopped exercising completely when I hit my 80's - BIG MISTAKE! I urge everyone to exercise regularly if they are physically able!
I'm 70, obese with sciatica and knee replacements. Kneeling on a hard surface is scary that I might damage my artificial knees. I manage to do a hybrid of your MacGyver method. I roll over to an arm chair, pull the cushion off and use that under one knee while I leverage my other foot against a wall. Pushing against the wall "shoves" me up into the chair while I use my arms to pull up. So I'm pulling, shoving and pushing at the same time. I've discovered that it's all about leveraging to get maximum out of diminished strength.
When Isaw your video Iwas in tears .Iam 80 years old last year Ifell inthe park.Ifell on the iron bench Icould not get up .the iron bench handle hurt my chest and ribs arm right side.icried in pain .two people helped me to get up .my right side went blue. black .they helped me to reach home .Iwas so scared Ileft walking .after amonth or so Istarted walking but v slowly.again Ifell infront of my house while gardening.fall was not that badbut could get up with my grandson and maids help. Now Ihave stopped walking in park.So scared of fall . God pls give me courage.to bear this.
The first step should be checking as much as possible for injuries. If there's obvious severe pain getting or staying warm may be much more important than moving if that might make injuries worse.
I can sympathise .... I'm getting expert at dressing my own badly skinned knees. When a Health care Nurse asked me why I fell I explained I was curious to see how far I can slide along rough concrete on my knees.
If you scoot over to a chair, sofa, mattress, etc., and with your back against the chair, raise your arms onto the chair, and with your arms and legs, raise up, you can get up. I fractured my spine in three places, and was able to get up this way.
I've gone all of those...till I couldn't do those any more. Now I do a combination of them. Most of those hurt me more than the fall. People have helped me but I'm 200 lbs and it's not easy for them. I crawl up to a tree or rock and hope fore the best. Nursing home here I come
I am 76 now and fell on a stone paving at my back kitchen door ,only because I in falling instintly brought my arms in palms down protecting my face miss the step in line with my face,Could have smashed my jaw but for instinct self presevation. But my knees ankles and one arm badly bruised and hand palms around thumbs very sore and bruised. .It took me 15 to 20 minutes to maneuver myself to pull myself up ,useing garden borders, and other things to push myself up to hobble and limp back inside the house to call my daughter for help.I was not well inturnaly shook up for 4 days third fall this year, hip joints gone ,making walking painfull and unsafe.
I've had a stroke so use a slightly different method. I get to where I can "stand" on my knees next to a bed or couch. "Flop" forward onto bed or couch & roll onto my back. Scoot myself onto bed until I can sit up.
Thank you for the video. I have multiple Sclerosis and have severe weakness in both my right hand limbs. I am very careful and use a rolling walking frame. However, I did fall a couple of months ago. I relaxed as I fell and had no injury. After a few moments I managed to wiggle towards a door frame and pull myself up to a sitting position, then wiggle over to a phone. This was after I tried all sorts to pull myself up onto a chair and other things. I try to keep exercising my good limbs for strength, but it didn't help. Obviously I was missing something I could do. Have you any suggestions?
Much of what I do is meant to help someone like you. Having weakness on one side makes it harder to improve, but over time it really can get better. Just be careful and take it slowly!
Thank you. Do you have any videos on how to help someone who has fallen? I'm a caregiver for my sister who is a fall risk, and she never wants to do what I suggest to help her get up.
Two winters ago I got blown over by a strong wind on our parking lot. There was no one around. Because of really bad arthritis in my knees I’m unable to rest any weight on them. I wasn’t too far from our apartment building entrance which consists of two steps, a ramp and a handrail in the middle. I rolled over to the stairs and was then able to scoot up and sit on the bottom stairs, using the hand rail to and my hands/arms to pull me up to the second step and from there to a standing position. It’s the first and hopefully only time I’ll have a fall, but it showed me that I’m no longer able to get up from a floor or other surface on my own. I’m 67 years old.
I'm 73, have arthritic joints & fell on the driveway. The only I could get up, was to lie face down, get on my knees so I could get my feet in position in order to back up, straight legged until I could grab the front of the car to help pull myself up. No way to get help but I was damned if I was just gonna lie there! When it came to the pain, I just had to suck it up! I am now way more careful when walking on uneven ground & I use a cane. BTW, these newer cars are a nightmare because there is little to hold on to.
Excellent options. The 'scoot' method makes the most sense to me, however, I just took a fall to the sidewalk this morning while walking my dog...no curb, no help. What suggestions do you have if the only thing around you to offer some kind of help is a telephone pole? I'd appreciate any help you can offer.
Hello. Thats a difficult scenario! I have had clients that told me they were able to pull themselves up by holding trees and mailboxes. I would think a telphone pole might work, but it depends on how wide it is and how long your arms are. At some point I will shoot another video showing how to get up without anything neerby. But it does take a certain level of strength.
In March I fell backwards off curb between 2 parked cars.....feet were on curb butt on pavement.....not good......someone came along and helped me up...😢
@@neurolasticinstitute424 If you can reach a sturdy stationary object, you should be able to "climb up" it to get upright. I am 4'10" and can easily grasp a telephone pole by embracing it, so if you have arm strength you should be able to do it.
Those pads from the second way can be the difference for people with painful knees. I use the first method but I always put extreme cushioning under my knees.
OK. Advice on what to do after a fall backwards down a Spiral Staircase. I hit my Head on every step on the way down to the Tiled Floor. I was out cold. I have no sensation in my left knee after a BOTCHED Laminectomy by a Surgeon (more like a Butcher). Nerves L4 & L5 have been impinged and I have no sensation at all in my Left Knee. It simply collapses with no warning. I fall on a regular basis. I have 10 Stairs to climb and my leg decided to give way on the ninth step. I was thrown violently against the Right Handrails and hit them very hard across my Chest, then spun and hit the Left handrails across my chest. It was then a descent backwards down every stair banging my head on each one. When I came to I called the Ambulance, Four Hours wait. I had been on a cold slate floor for so long all of my body heat had been drained and I was stiff and cramped. I spent Five weeks in Hospital before I could get out of bed and walk with the air of a wheeled walking frame. I was then discharged as they needed the bed. So much for any Physio or Assistance from our Aged Care Department. They don’t Evan answer the phone….Leave a message and we will call you back…Bullshit. They never have. I carry my Mobile Phone in a case with a lanyard around my neck. So, what advice if you fall, get badly bruised, knocked out and can barely move? NO, I don’t want to go into a bloody Nursing Home!
I am an anomaly at 70+ years old and walking with a cane, I am doing physical therapy so I can stand without pain. In the last week I showed my therapist that I am in more risk of injury if someone tries to prevent me from falling. To show him this I deliberately fell backwards and at the end I was kneeling. I explained that in high school we had done tumbling. If my legs are giving me trouble while I am on a couch my best way to get up is to roll off the couch to the floor. Therefore, different strokes for different folks.
This might work if you are as tall as me, 5'6" tall, but my partner is 82 and 6'3" tall and though he is not heavy set at all it is still hard for taller seniors to make these maneuvers when they fall. His legs are strong, but his knees and legs are not very flexible. He slid off an old couch we had, now he has a recliner that lifts him, but when he slid of the old couch, he had to crawl to the bedroom to get my attention to help him up. I'm short but I'm very strong and flexible for a 62 year old senior, I do bodyweight exercises 3 times a week.
Recently I had a very hard fall stapling paper on a bulletin board (hazard of being a teacher). I had to lie on the floor. I rolled until I was on my hands and knees to a chair. It was scary! I am still recovering!
I am 81. When I fell stumbling over my own feet last year against a very low wall I was badly winded. I could not move. after about 3 or 4 minutes I got onto my hands and knees but just had to hang my head while in that position while still trying to normalise my breath. I only had bad bruises but the shock took many days to fade away.
I fell and army crawled to my actual staircase. I tried to pull myself up a few stairs. I wish i would have seen this. I might have accomplished getting up if I went butt first and pushed up that way. I wound up calling 911 and they got me up. But i will absolutely now remember this method.
Start with partial push backs against a door, or standing at foot of stairs grasping both handrails. At first stand 2' from wall, and do 10 push backs then when that is easy, take 1 short step back from the wall and try it.
I’m 79 and can not get on my knees. I had both knees replaced. Extremely painful. I’ve had several falls, and if I can’t get my neighbors to give a hand, I either try to scoot to a little stool and and try to walk my senior backside up on it. Not easy, weak arms. Last year while bring groceries in “after dark”, fell back through picket fence gate. Since it wasn’t stable, I couldn’t get up Sit over two hours, in my front yard until my neighbors arrived home.(foot ball game). Haha!! So we seniors need to be very careful while searching for the “Golden Years” God bless all!
I just fell tonight and I’m only 54! I felt like I was stuck to the floor. I couldn’t pull myself up. I was panicking. I ended up crawling and moving my legs until somehow I was able to get up. This has never happened to me. I immediately went to the bathroom and took a mineral bath. I feel fine now. I thought I was going crazy.
So, what if you have no chair or anything to use the stair step method? Like what if you're in the middle of a parking lot? Or your yard? I'm 68 and have severe arthritis in my knees making it difficult to walk and it affects my balance. My biggest fear is falling somewhere there are no chairs, no fences, no trees, or no means of pulling myself up.
This will work if you can Bend your knees, very hard to get up this way. Have an Old person do this and have them try to get up. My brother in law fell in Fla. @ age 75 and he is is great shape, and broke his leg. No one would Not Stop and Help him. It was 11 am and he had to call his wife to come and Help him. The then had to go to the hospital to get pins put in his leg. Sad when no one would help. He lives in a nice housing plan near Lake Mary !
Sorry to hear that. There is no way to make a video showing a method that would help everyone. I made this other video to show a few more ways: ruclips.net/video/X6xKfmlWK9k/видео.html
If you are inside, unless you can determine that you have no injuries, it's better to stay where you fell. There's no reason today for a senior to not have a phone or pendant 24x7. If you can get to a phone you don't need to get up off the floor - to crawl or roll anywhere. I broke an ankle going down a concrete staircase (it had no handrails) and was able to crab-walked back up to my room. I learned that precaution is better than remediation. I don't walk alone, across unpaved grounds or where I don't have something substantial within reach.
86 here. Fell in my backyard. Felt that as long as I was down I might as well do something useful so I crawled around and weeded my whole yard. Finally got to the gate and pulled myself up. Yard looks great...and so do I.
Best Comment Ever. Glad you're okay.
You have an AMAZING ATTITUDE !
😂😂😂😂😂😂❤
My Dad did the same thing. Fell in the yard and pulled weeds until someone came home and helped him up
Good for you !
I am 91 years old and recently I fell in my driveway. I was lying face down on the ground. I was able to place my arms firmly under my shoulders and straighten my legs (down dog) ! From there l could hold on to my knees and straighten up. Wow! Those ballet classes from my youth came in handy.
Great to know!! Hope you are better. Take care
Fell yesterday.. couldn't get up..had to get my son who lives miles away..will know what to do IF it happens again..but hopefully wont😢
I have used your suggestion of crawling to a chair or a little footstool and thankfully again I was able to get up.
It worked.
My sister suggested this!
Amen. I've used the "butt scoot" method across hardwood floors & even my concrete porch, but if I had to I would roll 👍
I am 93 years old and I thank you for the enlightening help. Thank you. You may be surprised at the corners of the world you're helping - I am from Guyana.
Wow, thank you!
Glad you were able to rescue yourself. People can be so oblivious.
yeah people have become that way they don't care about the elderly in this country.
The saddest part in this sad story is the fact that many people just don't care. I call them inhuman 😢😢
Let's not be so rough on the drivers. Maybe they just kept their eyes on the road and didn't notice you. Hope so anyway.😊
You could have rested on the step too. Not the same as a chair but at least you are sitting up and clearing that head.
Thanks Doctor ,I am 90yo and sitting on the edge of my bed was sliding down on the floor ,I was very surpriced how hard it was to slide to a chair and eventually was able to sit in it ,your method will certaindly help next time
Yes...this subject needs to be brought up more and more! At 74 Ive noticed my balance is off a little so Im very careful doing anything these days!
Thank you!
❤ good post
Our dogs thought it fun to sneak up behind me (82 years) and knock me over and then continue their romp across our lawn. I landed on my chest, knee, and elbow on ice. I took my time to lay there a while and check for injuries. I had my walking poles, and the dogs were no help at all, as I slowly got my feet under me - like downward dog, and worked upward. It really pays to work at keeping fit!
Thank you for your labor of love to help us here!!
Sorry to hear that. Dogs mean well. Thats great that you were able to get up!
Would you mind sharing the name of your PT in Calgary?
@@cathyg1691 Not at all. Mat Thompson at Versa Movement Collective. Mention Samantha-jane.💕
Can you share the methods. I also have 2 artificial knees. Can NOT kneel. Asked 4 pt to teach me how to get up. Told sorry no way just don't fall - wtf!! What can I say don't ever sign up w Kaiser!
ruclips.net/video/X6xKfmlWK9k/видео.html
I was taught in a First Aid Corse done by Red Cross to lay in place and do a self injury test. Find out what hurts and what does not. When you have that information you now know what parts of your body have not been injured and can be used in your getting up.
Once I had to make a sling to immobilize my arm as I had broken my shoulder. Luckily I was in the garden and had twine I could use to make a sling to support my arm while sliding over to a garden chair to support myself while getting on my feet then sitting in the chair to rest. I try to keep my arms, torso and legs strong as much as I can
I am 76
Thank you so much! Not that I plan to fall ever again like I did last night in the dark as I got up from bed to turn on a fan, the second method looks promising for me as I cannot kneel. After 45 minutes on the floor trying and failing at every thing I could think of, my once incredibly strong, 6’4” now tattered Superman of a 79 year old husband insisted we call our son. Of course, he and my husband easily lifted me up under my arms. I have NEVER felt more grateful to be standing on my own two feet in my life! Gratitude! ❤
Thank you for sharing!
I am recovering from knee replacement 5 days ago!!!!!! this may be a life saver.. thank you sir...
Some of the contributions to this , are the medications , that make one experience , vertigo , and.loss of balance !
When I fell and broke my pelvis . I could no way move without terrible , PAIN .
Fortunately I had my cell phone and was able to call 911 !
@@donholmes3267 yep that's my ticket as well. I never go ANYWHERE without that phone being on my person (unless if I'm already sitting in my wheelee)
I have had several falls, but have had three knee replacements in recent years, so it’s very
Painful to actually get onto my knees as you mention. 😢☹️”
Thankyou for trying to help us…much appreciated, bless you.
Excellent - I needed this! You're right - TNR and arthritis!
B no loop poo
Happened to me...I passed out from terrible uti in my bedroom had to roll to chair..very difficult but I got up...thank the Lord 😊
Very resourceful thinking! Smart
Great job!
Thanks!! I'm old so I listened carefully to your tutorial!! ♡D
I made this vodeo to help with this: ruclips.net/video/X6xKfmlWK9k/видео.html
Thanks for sharing!
Maybe think about going to an ENT and getting a referral to a balance center
Good advice, practice getting down on the ground and up a few times a week would help.
Good tip!
Great idea
Thank you so much for this video!
Thank you Dr. Weiss. Good stuff.
Sorry to hear that
I had a friend that fell.
Best to assist under their armpits and not by pulling on arms
@@jacquelynkirby1442 thanks. The only thing I worry about is if the hip bone is broken so perhaps it would be prudent to ask the fallen person whether it hurts, after making whatever efforts one is making in a tentative way: no firm strong effort straightway. Generally under the armpits seems good.
😻
And this exact scenario happened a month back : a friend’s husband missed the curb coming out of the coffee place & she tried to “ catch “ his fall but ended up with both of them on the ground. A police officer eventually drove up & someone must have witnessed them on the ground & called for help.

I HAVE FOUND THAT I MUST GIVE MYSELF TIME TO RELAX, GIVE MYSELF a pep talk and think through each step in the process to get off the ground.
definitely some good ideas. wish though he addressed stroke patients who often have left or right side hemiparesis. in simpler words the left or right arm can’t contribute to the movement.
What muscles are weaken causing you not to get from from a fall? Also what exercises can be done to strengthen these areas of weakness? I don’t fall but at time I sit on the floor to do something and it is difficult for me to get up easily.
I'd love to know also
I fell in my bathroom and tried to kneel but my arthritis in knees and hips prevented me getting on to my knees. After about 15 minutes trying to kneel I managed to "bum walk" to my bed to grab a pillow and kneel on that. Luckily I was then up in seconds by grabbing the bed frame. Very scary though and it took me a long time to stop shaking.

Could you please show demonstrators who are OLDER, WEAKER, and HEAVIER? Like me…I’d like to see their success with these good tips.

Glad it was helpful!
Excellent suggestions. I have bad knees so the scoot method sounds great. But I also think that anyone who is alone should wear a fanny pack all the time with a phone in it to call if you need help. My husband is almost deaf so it is like living alone.
I love the fanny pack idea!
Fantastic,, i have a knee replacement,,, this helped very much,,, they told me never to kneel
on that knee, but nevr told me how to get up... i was near steps so that helped... do more videos please.. !!!!!!!
Glad it helped!

Very useful, I have fallen a few times and getting up is a big problem
😊😊😊
I too have had knee replacements and kneeling results in severe pain, so I can’t get up alone.
I never heard or saw of that ' staircase' method of recovery. Thanks.
Yes! Great point.
I have fallen twice recently. The worst part was both times landed on already sore knees. Very painful but eventually got up.
I can sympathise .... I'm getting expert at dressing my own badly skinned knees. When a Health care Nurse asked me why I fell I explained I was curious to see how far I can slide along rough concrete on my knees.
I'm
❤❤
If you scoot over to a chair, sofa, mattress, etc., and with your back against the chair, raise your arms onto the chair, and with your arms and legs, raise up, you can get up. I fractured my spine in three places, and was able to get up this way.
That puts stress on rotator cuffs. I'd only try it combined with the staircase method.
I've torn both rotator cuffs years ago, and have no problem.@@christal2641
I've gone all of those...till I couldn't do those any more. Now I do a combination of them. Most of those hurt me more than the fall. People have helped me but I'm 200 lbs and it's not easy for them. I crawl up to a tree or rock and hope fore the best. Nursing home here I come
I would love a video on how someone with paralysis from a stroke could properly fall and get up on their own. Mainly right arm and ankle/foot
The woman in this video had a stroke 18 years ago that she has partially recovered from.
I figured this out all by myself, as I have fallen a few times, or still need to get down on the ground/floor for certain things.
@@neurolasticinstitute424 Thank you for your kind response.
Look up Dr Ken Berry here on RUclips, his lifestyle has shown significant improvement in MS
@@kathyharmon2093 Thank you very much for your kind and helpful suggestion. I will look up Dr. Ken Berry right now.
Thank you. Do you have any videos on how to help someone who has fallen? I'm a caregiver for my sister who is a fall risk, and she never wants to do what I suggest to help her get up.
This is a great suggestion. I'll try and make one soon!
My doctor is not a fan of canes. The most stable thing is the walker. I don't know what I would do without my walker. I am 98 years old.
If you have rotator cuff problems that adds another dimension to getting off the floor or ground. Been there.
That does make it a LOT more difficult
@@neurolasticinstitute424 your advice is sound. I’ve used it.
I try to take my phone with me. I know from when my husband was living to call 911. That’s usually one of their functions.
In March I fell backwards off curb between 2 parked cars.....feet were on curb butt on pavement.....not good......someone came along and helped me up...😢
@@neurolasticinstitute424
If you can reach a sturdy stationary object, you should be able to "climb up" it to get upright.
I am 4'10" and can easily grasp a telephone pole by embracing it, so if you have arm strength you should be able to do it.
Thank you really helpful. I have 2 artificial knees!
When I came to
I called the Ambulance, Four Hours wait.
Just keep the phone on You...maybe get the beeper...just go slow
Thanks for sharing 🙂 And God 💕🙏❤️ Bless U
I recommend getting down on the ground daily and up, while someone is with you. Get those muscles used to getting up!
Thank you, you addressed my situation.
I am 81. When I fell stumbling over my own feet last year against a very low wall I was badly winded. I could not move. after about 3 or 4 minutes I got onto my hands and knees but just had to hang my head while in that position while still trying to normalise my breath. I only had bad bruises but the shock took many days to fade away.
Very good service
I fell down several times outside and inside my house. And I am 70. Good samaritans helped me to get up and not on my own.
I fell and army crawled to my actual staircase. I tried to pull myself up a few stairs. I wish i would have seen this. I might have accomplished getting up if I went butt first and pushed up that way. I wound up calling 911 and they got me up. But i will absolutely now remember this method.
I have severe arthritis in my knees , overweight with weak muscle tone. Is there exercises you can do to strength muscles so when you fall. Thank you
Start with partial push backs against a door, or standing at foot of stairs grasping both handrails.
Last year while bring groceries in “after dark”, fell back through
picket fence gate. Since it
wasn’t stable, I couldn’t get up
Sit over two hours, in my front yard until my neighbors arrived home.(foot ball game). Haha!!
So we seniors need to be very careful while searching for the “Golden Years”
God bless all!
HOW are your electrolites ?❤❤❤
Thank you
So, what if you have no chair or anything to use the stair step method?
My mom has a cellphone, but she only uses it when she leaves the house. Her phone at home is a landline.
