As a foreigner who lives in Busan atm, I kinda understand foreigners who don't really like to go to places where only locals are, especially if they are shy or self-concious because if you go there people STARE. A lot. Me and my friend (who is also white) like to go to these places because we want to experience the authentic culture of Korea, but not gonna lie, the stares are not comfortable, even though the people who stare probably don't do it to be mean or anything, but still...Just my point of view :)

I feel you on this Lucie! Where I live I am only the 2nd foreigner and 1st black person in my area. They stare so hard, but I turned it into a way to make them laugh or to let them know yes I am interesting as I look by smiling really big at them if they are kids make a silly face or wave. They usually stop or they come over and practice as much English as they can. Now the staring doesn't bother me as much. It's a good comfort technique i guess

The thing about "i dont like kpop"... I can kinda understand why some foreigners in korea feel like they need to say that (not that its ok tho). People automatically tend to assume they are "koreaboos" and kpop stans when they mention their interest in korean culture. It can maybe be a way of them to say "hey, i like your culture for more than just kpop".

Exactly!!! I hate when people assume that you only like korea because the kpop. Korea is way more than kpop. I don’t live in Korea, I live in USA and my boyfriend is korean. Do you know how many times I heard “oh you must like kpop that’s why you dating him”. No bro I love my boyfriend as a person, I’m not with him because where he has born. I live in Hongdae since over a year now and I can tell you a foreigner opinion about K-Pop.
Here are many korean guys looking for easy foreigners to hook up with. And the first thing they always ask is "you like K-Pop?". Sooo as a foreign girl you start hating this question, since a yes means to them "I love korean guys and please take me home". It develops kind of bad connotations, so this statement "I don't like K-Pop" is not because of the music, but actually to keep certain bad people away from us... :(

I love your content Rachel, but I am a foreigner in Korea and wanted to offer my point of view. I have some Korean friends, but I can speak for foreigners who only have foreigner friends. Yes it's true that many foreigners only hang out with foreigners because it's comfortable, but there are also some who genuinely want and try to make Korean friends, me being one of them. It's difficult making Korean friends. Many aren't open to foreigners and worry too much about the language barrier. Also, many foreigners (me too) get tired of Koreans mainly being interested in wanting to hang out to improve their English, instead of genuinely being interested in getting to know them. There's been countless times I meet a Korean, and one of the first things they say is "teach me English" or "lets do a language exchange" and thats honestly a red flag for me and makes me and others hesitant to be friends because no one wants to feel used. It's easy to make short term friends, but many don't become long term in my experience and people I know. Many Koreans always say they are busy, and they just randomly disappear and you never hear from them anymore. I personally ( very recently like 3 weeks ago) exchanged kakao talk with three guys at the gym hoping to become friends with them, and they ghost you or say "they are busy" when one of them actually hung out with me. It seems like in this culture, people are too afraid to be honest when it comes to rejection, and just go along with it, and when you text them its obvious they aren't interested in hanging out. I acknowledge it's difficult being friends with Koreans, but I make the decision to live here, so I won't give up. In my experience, I have set up appointments with Koreans and MULTIPLE times within a span of two years, the appointment will be made, and at the last minute they cancel, coming up with a reason, but never getting back to you or making an effort to reschedule. Many people get tired of this behavior and feel it's too much work. I can empathize with many foreigners, but I always make an effort and try to meet Koreans, even though it's hard. I have three solid friends right now, and it would be nice to have more. Although many foreigners can do a better job of making an effort to befriend Koreans, I feel many Koreans don't make it easier for us by not being open to foreigners. I met a guy recently who said Koreans make him feel lonely here sometimes. Yes we're foreigners and you are right that many don't make an effort, but for some of these people, they know it's hard and they give up. I literally a few months ago was in a Facebook group and i posted saying I want more Korean friends and one messaged me. We've hung out many times and on Christmas I am going to his house to spend with his family, and I am so excited to spend it with a Korean family and experience more the culture in a deeper way that most don't get. That wouldn't have happened if I just gave up, so I hope to be an inspiration to those who want to give up. I have told some of my foreigner friends that trying to make Korean friends is like fishing. It takes effort and patience, but you'll eventually find people who are interested in making friends. We just have to try to understand them. We need to learn it's a shy culture, so we have to make the effort, and it will eventually pay off. So you are right, but I just wanted to show my two sense and offer you a perspective as to why many don't make the effort, even though they should. I am not bashing your country at all and to be honest I'd rather be here than back home in America right now with how divisive it is, but just simply offering a perspective to your dislike of foreigners only having foreigner friends. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts!

I'm sorry to say this, but i think , the responsabillity is more on our part us foreigners. Most of the time, we come from a very open and multicultural world. Korea opened it self to the world not a long time ago. Of course they are aware of a lot of things about us. But not all of them and not that much. Those things takes times. Decades Maybe. We have to learn korean and stop saying they re suppose to know some english. It is more difficult for them to be open to us. Think about it. We are not in their shoes but we know how it work with their past their culture etc. Of course they cannot get away with everything but at least we can blame a lot of their desapointing behavior on their culture and history. People are not just rude. And i know bad people do exist in korea. but still ...

I agreed with you till you got to the immersion and language thing and I'll tell you why. As for immersion and language, some people are introverted and don't have that much knowledge of the area, or maybe they are just not into it. They are maybe there because they were transferred to South Korea because of their job requirements. They are there for just a specific period, and then they are going to leave to another spot in the world. So, getting immersed and learning the language, (except for the basics, and out of respect, because on this point I do agree with you), should really be a subjective thing tailored to each person's conditions, and it shouldn't annoy others IMHO.

    • @KayaJane
      @KayaJane 3 года назад +11

@@Wingzero90939 I'm really glad that you see the point of this so clearly, because I think that she was a bit harsh in this video. If you refer to her "embarrassing mistakes she did in the USA", you'll find that she did a lot of things that are not socially correct in the US, yet people nicely corrected her without being annoyed knowing that she's a foreigner. In her video, she says that she fell into these mistakes because she didn't know better, yet she doesn't forgive foreigners when they use the same excuse in South Korea. So, I guess that it's just unfair to receive such lovely treatment when abroad even though she was doing some mistakes, yet rain hell on foreigners because of some mistakes they do when they visit South Korea.

    • @no_i_dont_want_no_slugs
      @no_i_dont_want_no_slugs 3 года назад +4

100% agree. It depends on people's goals. If someone isn't planning to stay there forever and they have other aspirations that don't include learning the language, then I see nothing wrong with them only learning the basics (although knowing how to ask "how much is this?" is definitely basics imo). I don't think it makes them lazy or unattractive. It just isn't a goal for them. Now if they had no other goals at all in life, that might make them boring, I suppose... but I think becoming fluent in the language really depends on why they're there and what they're there for, and whether or not they're troubling people (they should be able to get by and not inconvenience folks).

You make valid points, but I don't think it's very fair to criticize foreigners that make complaints about Korea, every country has its problems and it doesn't mean they don't want to live there. Okay, there is a lot that is hypocritical in this. For starters, you talk about being a positive person but this entire video is negative. There is a lot, but the thing that pissed me off the most is 2 and 4.
    2) The "I don't like K-Pop" people.
I feel that your experiences have been extremely taken out of context. For starters, the only reason people say that they hate the cool stuff is to seem different and unique. But foreigners already *are* different and unique. Hello, they are from a different country with different characters both genetically and culturally. What would *they* have to gain from bashing K-Pop other than being discriminated against by Korean natives? I do not usually talk about this, but now that you bring it up, I do not like K-Pop. I do not like pop, in general. I am a rock fan. Being that rock originated in America, does that mean that all naturalized and natural born citizens of the U.S.A. must like rock? No. And just to be clear, I do not hate K-Pop nor do I hate people who like it. I would never just walk around telling people how I do not like K-Pop and how I think that their music sucks but if they ask what K-Pop bands I like (sometimes out of pure habit, other times after finding out that I was adopted from South Korea) I will say that I do not really like K-Pop that much and they will be shocked. But just because I am genetically from Korea or some foreigners are living in Korea does not mean that we are obligated to like K-Pop. Also, as you said, maybe you do not need to know that about us but did we ever ask you about the things that you hate about foreigners? And if a certain animosity towards Korean culture is what you fear, South Korea has so much more to offer than catchy tunes and Hallyuwood.
    4) People who stay in their own comfort zone.
This is the most hypocritical piece of work I have ever witnessed as it is the reason I am writing this comment. You say that it is wrong to hate what others like and put them down, but some people *like* to stay in their comfort zone and are just home bodies. I am one of them. I am an introvert, I hate crowds, I do not enjoy parties, dating or doing things that would be deemed acceptable to you. I only go to school and work. I *like* only going to school and work. When I am not going to school and work, I enjoy reading, playing video games, listening to music, (obviously, debating people via the internet), and I *like* all of these things. These things are not boring *to me.* If you think that valuing your education over your social life is boring and lazy, then so be it; you don't have to like what I like. But know this, as far as you insulting people like me then, oh well. I'm sure there are plenty of people who do not like people like you. In fact, tons of people stereotype South Koreans (and many Asian girls, in general) as being materialistic and high maintenance and I guess you are just another number for them. And due to the melanin in my skin, I am one of those facing the consequences of the stereotypes you helped create for us. So thank you for that.

#2 - It’s ok to not like kpop but don’t not like it because you think it’s cool to hate on popular things. And subsequently constantly hating on it just brings others down for their excitement for it.
#4 - Living in a country that has a lot of culture to offer. Try the local life and not what you’ve known. Similarly like going on a trip to like Mexico and expecting to only eat American food without wanting to try the local food.

The third point 🥴🥴😒 if I live in that country or if I know that country for some reason, am I not allowed to say that I don’t like some things? I mean, I think every complain is followed by a positive thing about that culture. I kinda get your point but I also think that sometimes foreigners have a different and completely valid point of view that non foreigners should listen to. I know that it’s painful to see flaws in you culture but saying “if you don’t like here, then leave” it’s not going to solve the situation.

Like bro, i have my own interests, why do u have to criticize me for something i love...? And yes, also in my country k-pop's stereotype is a childish, teen-ish genre and those who listen to it are defined as "cringy" ㅠㅠㅠ

I can relate, I listened to K-pop since 2012 also anime around 2010. I was just a child, I still am. But I didn't say anything, because I was scared. When I was younger I got made fun of for watching anime. So I pretended to like other things, I told my family and friends in 2019, but I still got fun of from others like in class/school. K-pop/anime was my childhood and I don't care what others think. I am/was into it and it's not a phrase, not as my sister she liked anime then she stopped, that was the reason I like this type of things. And I don't like the stereotype of K-pop or anime it's just not right.
Ppl calling me koreaboo or Weeaboo I don't even talk or do as them, I just like the culture or countries it's exiting/satisfying to learn a language.

Absolutely understand where you're coming from. I get the stereotype that is used in the US and being over 35 I feel the pressure of the stereotype even more so because I feel like I'm somehow enjoying something that is okay for late gen Y and gen Z but somehow I know if I said it's one of my favorite genres to anyone outside of the K pop community on you tube I would probably be ostracized for it or at the least told to grow up if they think they're being kind. Good music and culture shouldn't have an age limit or geographical line on it.

storytime with the foreigner card: i had a friend who is really fluent in korean and while in korea they would only use the foreigner card of not knowing korean when they could hear someone speaking bad about them then at the proper moment speak korean to let them know like "hey i heard all the bad stuff you were saying about me" and not going to lie, thinking that's a genius way to use it to your advantage so you know when someone is speaking bad about you then surprising them when they discover you heard every bad thing they said about you.
as for the if you don't like this thing here, then leave. which i get to an extent.....being american in america and the amount of people telling me "well if you don't like it here, then leave" which...IM TRYING THERES THIS THING CALLED MONEY AND VISAS, if it was that simple trust me, I would have left right after high school....ANYWAYS, if its like drinking culture or like corn on/in pizza, then no, but if its certain things you dislike that make you uncomfortable and unsafe on the daily that's impacting you mentally, emotionally, and physically then yeah....maybe look into relocating? if any of that makes sense. i think it's one thing to understand the those complaining about things in korea (or anywhere) but haven't left there's a reason why they're still there after so many years, given they feel safer there than their home country or maybe another personal reason, just another perspective on it...it's a lot to unpack.

Actually this was something my friend and me used to do whenever we met new Korean people. We would tell them we didn't know any Korean to see if they would talk sh** about us in Korean amongst themselves thinking we wouldn't understand them. And sadly it did happen quite a bit (they would make mean jokes about my friend who was an African-American male). So we knew not to hang out with those people again. But that was 8-9 years ago, so foreigners were still something very new to Koreans back then. They are more used to it now I think.

That negative talk by visiting foreigners is a common manipulation technique sometimes called “negging”.
I worked quite a few years at a global company with offices all over the world. And of course Asia (mostly Korea and Japan but also Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and China). I met coworkers based in each of those countries who frequently had that negative spiel about where they were stationed.
They used their negative little spiel to show how well they knew the country they were in. And, amazingly, there were always natives who would join in and reinforce that message. At the same time, you could see it made other natives uncomfortable. On the other hand, it somehow worked for those guys as a line to pick up girls. It was weird.

I will share something my grandfather told me over 40 years ago, ‘don’t be so thin skinned”. In today’s world it means don’t be triggered. What you are describing is what we call is “human nature’. I met many people in my life and most them think they are positive and an out-going person, and if you do not think or live your lives like they do, then you are the problem. Sadly, it is not true. Most people have problems and or issues and some people have big problems. It is called life. Life is about recognizing the stressors that bother us and dealing with them. If you truly understand “human nature’, then you should know that half of world’s population are complainers, to include husbands and wives, boyfriends and girlfriends, and brothers and sisters.

as a foreigner currently in Korea, #3 is the Worst (and usually those are the people who hate Kpop/Kdramas/other popular Korean things for no reason other than they're popular.) I always notice this with people who can't accept that they're a foreigner, or people who haven't had to deal with an uncomfortable environment until now. usually they come from countries where they're the majority, and they can't handle the feeling of being in the minority. they always have this vibe of disdain/resentment towards Korean culture for making them different. some people take a while to adjust and grow out of it, but I've noticed some people stick only with other foreigners and don't even try to adapt. then they end up the people you described, complaining endlessly but never leaving because they have their comfortable group of other foreigners who feel the same. it's unfortunate.

obviously its not something foreigners should say to south koreans because majority of you guys love Kpop which is understandable, but whenever foreigners are in south korea they are ALWAYS accused of being "koreaboos" (a non- south korean person whos obsessed with the korean culture but especially kpop and kdramas...)which can be very annoying. of course there are foreigners in south korea that are koreaboos but thats not everyone and it does get extremely uncomfortable when people say "are you a koreaboo?" "oh your a koreaboo" "did you come here only because your a koreaboo?" i mean you gotta agree that thats annoying as hell. and at the end of the day you dont want people to have that perseption of you. i mean foreigners come to south korea not because of kpop and Kdrama. they come for the culture, the people and just the country itself because theres alot to see here thats why foreigners feel the need to say that just so that they make it clear.😇

I agree soooo much. I say if you are going somewhere different like Mexico, Korea ect. Learn the language. It's rude to force someone to talk in your language in their country and people who travel just to do what they do in their own country It's just a big slap in the face. I agree with everything you said.

Rachel I am exactly the type of person to say “I don’t like thing people go crazy for but and I only like unique” but that also why I love Korea because many people are all hype about USA but not many to SK tho don’t hate me too much please 😅

Kdramas are the best. Even the ones I don't like are still better than most American television.

    You probably won't like me.🙄
When I'm in Portugal, I nag about what's better in Germany. When I'm in Germany, I nag about everything that's better in Portugal.
It probably bothers me that I can't use the "better" version right now. Maybe at the time I am hypoglycemic, under time pressure or annoyed about something else.
If we happen to meet in such a situation, don't get angry with me. It's enough if I'm angry. 😉

Hmmm I think many people in the USA say the same things. I just try not to let things bother me so much and try not to judge others. I know plenty of people that don’t like Kpop like I do, but whatever their loss. I think a foreigner in Korea has probably stepped out of their comfort zone just by being there to begin with. Baby steps. I lived in Japan a long time and it was not easy to begin with. All of my friends were Japanese because of the company I worked for. I longed for the taste of home so I usually made it myself. It’s very hard to live in a country where you don’t speak or read the language. I had to learn it or sit there nodding... so I did the best I could. It got better. It has made me more tolerant of foreigners who do not speak English and how harshly they are treated sometimes. Life is too short to let other people bother you. Just live and let live.
    Thanks for the video.

When I'm in Korea, I often use the 'foreigner card'. I drive like a maniac and was pulled over by police multiple times. But I pull out my CA driver's license (not even international) and start complaining in English, pretending I don't speak any Korean. They always run away as if I'm a leper. In the States, I never went to jury duty, always checking off the 'I don't understand English' excuse, even though I often read Shakespeare on the can. Go easy on the foreigners there, Rachel. You have a fellow countryman here who's an absolute a**hole in that regard.

Number 5: not learning the language. OH that point is SO good! That is a major complaint that I have in my country. I work in customer service and I get so frustrated having to deal with people who refuse to make an effort learning this country's native language.

You are funny. I just watched a video about a former teacher in Korea and her top ten things she does not like. They were helpful because I would feel the same if I lived there. But I still want to visit. And I would eat Korean the entire time, see all the sights and learn as much Korean as I can, because I want to meet fun, cool people like myself. The journey is the lesson. Thanks Rachel.

I agree soooo much !!! the foreigners complaining about Korea but still live here are mostly english teachers who cant find a job in their home country. instead of being grateful that the government allows provides them with this work opportunity (bc most of them don't even have qualifications to teach) they live in their tiny foreigner bubble, never learn Korean, hang out with only other foreigners in Itaewon, HBC or Hongdae and never experience the real Korea... so of course living in this echo chamber you start hating your life here. They act soooo righteous and are low key racists, without acknowledging that in reality they are privileged economic immigrants. I would say "just leave" but me and them both know they don't have the opportunities or privileges outside of Korea .. so they stay here

I disagree with you if someone doesn't like corn with pizza and drinking culture that his business and if they complain they complain with their foreigners friends," then go back to your country" is not necessary, and comfort zone ppl also is not your place to say that, some ppl are like that even in their country, besides foreigner card i don't see any wrong

Sometimes is not about the language , but mentality and culture clashes people grow up with in different countries.
However I agree with you on a lots of things, when someone travels to another country and learning some basics of a language shows respect to that country. I hate with a passion when someone does not even greets someone in their language, but starts the conversation in English ( 99% of a time English speaking nations) without even saying a word in that language, expect ''their home country foods to be widely available and served the way they are use to it. Corn on pizza, pickles, polish sausage , thick crust - try some ''polish pizza'' and it tastes really good ( after all that is how fusion food comes to life). My personal combos - toasted wrap with Korean kimchi for spicy element instead of salsa, pulled pork and sharp cheese. People complaining about the country they live in - just get out if you are not happy, if you are a tourist - cut your trip short and get out if don't even try to learn anything about that country and the people.

Have you ever thought that using the word "foreigner" is rude and offensive.
"I only hearing people who speak English in non-English speaking countries do I hear the term "foreigner" used casually.
It is more of an artifact of imperfect translation I think".
How about saying foreign nationals, non Koreans, newcomers to Korea. Empathize.

I came to the conclusion that it is a waste of my energy worrying about people who aren't interested in trying new things. I just go and try new things and make good memories.
I think a lot of the things that you are describing come down to individual traits and personality. There are people in my country who act this way, both foreigners and people who are born here.
I hope you get to experience good situations with foreigners in Korea. I promise we're not all like the people you are talking about.

Tbf. A lot of German kids/students can’t even speak properly German themselves without the use of either English words or slang. They’re literally not able to speak polite in their mother tongue.

She would get extra lessons until the language improved. 😅🙈

I've been a phd student in another EU country and I've done... a few of these, now I feel I'd been such a rude foreigner :( and it's not like I chose the country myself, my old supervisor offered me the position. but I didn't learn the language because it annoyed me. that combined with social anxiety then stopped me from going out to try restaurants, visit touristic places etc.
speaking of people not liking kpop. it's not nice to start a conversation with "I hate xyz popular thing sooo much", just for the sake of being different. but if someone else brings up the topic, I think it's valid to say "can't really have a convo about that, I'm just not into it so I don't know much".
