Thank you for the notes of the open strings! I’m a beginner Mandolin player but I’ve played guitar over 50 years and totally missed the from high to low is E, A, D and G! But most of all Thanks a bazillion for taking time from your life to show us all the beginning into, Chords and Outro! 😎
Hey, man, good call on saying the mandolin is like the guitar but stringed upside down! I didn't see it that way when I picked up the mandolin. Now it's easier to work out the chords. Dig it!
Richard hartness Good for you, I did that about 1.5 yrs ago. Still only play 8-10 songs but I love the finger and brain training I get from translating my guitar songs to mando. Not really blue grass good but I can play some songs that feature mando. Just learned Maggie May and sorta learned Losing my Religion.
i don't pick up my mandolins enough. this will give me an excuse! fingered like a fiddle, plucked like a guitar... it's a natural fit for me. i don't know why this song never occurred to me for it though. but that's why we have you Dale! haha Thanks for this!
I think those of us that grew up in the 70s those mando licks in Maggie may are ingrained in our subconscious, now with this can materialize into the air
Hey man this is a silly question but I’m also a guitarist / mandolin very much second. Got a pretty nice Eastman Mando - not sure what strings come on it if they’re coated or anything - I usually dig older non coated strings on my acoustics…. I love how yours sounds in this vid, nice and fat. Do you have preferred Mando string set?
congrats on your Mando! Thanks for the kind words, I do prefer a darker tone, don't like too crisp - I mostly use flat wound strings. Little to no string noise and darker tone.
Dandy on the Mandy there Dale. I haven’t picked up my mandolin in a LONG time. It might have grown roots by now. I love it! Do you know Zeppelin’s Going To California? Hey, there’s a band to run by Mike and do a few songs about. Either way, can’t wait until October! Tony
Hey Dale! This video is fairly old, so how is the mandolin playing going? You can do Maggie May with the LLB now! There's a place in the outtro where he does this nice little 9 note walk down, that always gets me, right after he sings "Maggie, I wish I'd, near seen your face" the last time.
Dale what pick do you like for your mandolin playing. I can't seem to settle on a pick, I have been going around on this from day one. Thank you again.
i use Wegen mandolin picks...i've used them for some time now and use them for guitar too. They are tri-corned but rounded off. I love the fee and the tone they have and you can use any way you pick it up because all side are the same! Here's a link to the Wegen site i use the M100's. If you want to shoot me your shipping info i'll send you a couple. Please let me i'd be honored to.
tonedr , yes Dale that would be fantastic. I called two of the shops I deal with and no one has those picks. I am Kevinpaul Moore 401 Sulgrave Rd Pittsburgh Pennsylvania 15211. You ever have a hard time finding something I will assist. Thank you my friend.
Something not wildly known, The guy playing the Mandolin was NOT John Peel Rods mate he asked him to mime it so to speak The real player was Ray Jackson from that great group from Newcastle England Lindisfarne He got paid the pricely some of £15 The union rate at the time
Hello. Love the video and will take your advice re: choice of pick, have already ordered two as I find the rounder part of traditional picks help with my tremelo and tone. I have always loved the mandoin parts on Rod Stewart's "What Made Milwaukee Famous" and was hoping if you got some time you would consider making a turorial?
Been looking for a mandolin for a minute. I may be selling a few guitars. What model and price point is this one Dale. Any recommendations and a crazy priced Gibson not gonna happen lol! Cheers
hello Jordan...this is a Collings A style mando, this one has a varnish finish and i'm thankful to have it. Collings mangos start in the 2K range and up. I don't play as many mangos as i do guitars but some Epiphones i've played are good - you might look at some Michael Kelly, Kentucky or Washburn. best of luck in your search!
Ibanez has some real nice ones right off of the shelf for about 400 bucks great way to start and see if you really want it before you vest in a real nice custom quality one
awwwrrright......high time...bout time.... long overdo...really enjoyed it......an learned.....between retirement soon....collings[s] bumped scale mando,s....and a few tdr tutorials...maybe i can give it a whirl.....knew it was..but...1st time ive seen the mando................. in your hands buddy.............kool..whats your favorite tune/video 4 me to .................ssccheck out?

Hey Dale, thanks for another nice vid. Unfortunately my mandolin went to a friend of a friend years ago while I was out of the country and never came back. Maybe some day I'll get one again and give this a try! Anyway, just when I saw this video from you a brilliant duo that I recently discovered had posted a cover of Maggie May. They're called Larkin Poe and you may have heard of them but If you haven't seen their cover check it out. I think you'll like it! ruclips.net/video/e82oM5KL5as/видео.html
I see - that makes sense! Also makes sense that Larkin Poe would be on your radar. Speaking of rocking sisters, it was thanks to your work with the Lexington Lab Band that I discovered how awesome Heart are. Thanks a lot!

I play those parts on my 12 string🙂🎸
and i know that sounds great!
It's not bad! Since I don't have a mandolin the 12 makes for a decent alternative.
ive been faking it on 12 for years...its a cool part....too bad mandolins are strung left handed....
thank You !!!
thanks for checking this out!
Thanks Dale!
thanks for sharing your time to check this out...sincerely appreciated!
Me too kiss fan i just got a mando in october.
hope you enjoy your new mando!
Best to think of the mandolin as a Bass Guitar turned upside down or tuned as a violin.
Thanks so much for checking this out..greatly appreciated!
brilliant, thanks for sharing, helped me so much that
sincere thanks for checking this out...sincerely appreciated!
I was hoping to find how to play the ending mandolin solo on guitar. Maybe I'd be better off getting a mandolin for this and "Going to California".
thanks for checking this out...sincerely appreaited!
Can you Do A Video on the fly
Thanks so much for checking this out..greatly appreciated!
Can you do the whole song playing all the way through without speaking.... Mandolin only....
I believe that last bit on the A is 0 2 5, not just 0 5
hey Tony! you are right...i think honestly it does both but that's a great catch and i appreciate it!
Thank you
Thanks so much for checking this out..greatly appreciated!
You seem like a solid guy. Thanks for the lesson. Gotta know, tho, with Def Leppard and Kiss in the picture, where does AC/DC rank?
Thanks for sharing your time and love of music! your friend, dale Love ACDC - I have an Angus Knucklebonz just can see it here;)
