I think it’s very interesting having the seconds subdial with that plate portion at the bottom so the hand passes over two different textures. The Pennsylvania Railroad used Brunswick Green. It was such a dark shade of green that it was almost black.
At last, a Seiko branded VK63 mecaquartz to start collecting adding to my quite nice Pulsar range including a full rose gold variant which looks amazing on a full rose gold solid bracelet. One thing to remember is Seiko state when you replace the movement you have to fit new hands for the flyback as they are moored more heavily than standard second hands.
I bought this watch yesterday and really like it. I have a small collection of watches all are quartz mostly Casio, Citizen, G shock,Edifice and Seiko. This Seiko just struck me as something sufficiently different that I thought it is time for a change. The Nato band is something I expected I may not like but after wearing it for awhile its fine. So it will see more time on my wrist in the comming days.
@@islandwatch I wonder what's up with that. I have two solar Seikos, the white dial very thin two-hander minimalist SUP873P1, and the green dial SNE529. Both super accurate, always charged, absolutely trouble free.
They are nice and the price is really reasonable for SEIKO. I'd say that Citizen would be easily capable of producing something like this. The hands are very similar to the Citizen Skyhawk and the new Accutron.
My only niggle is that a brushed finish is so much better for a tool watch asthetic.Love quartz though so a thumbs up here.(And following your recent video with TGV yes a quartz watch is very real....look at the 9 f movement .Thats serious stuff)
Is the AT-63 the same as the VK-63 movement? I love mecca quartz movements. The pushers have a distinct click and the markers fly back to zero instantly. Great review Marc!
Hey Marc, I wanted to ask. Being an engineer with an appreciation for mechanical complexity. Have you or will you ever look at the Rolex Sky Dweller. You should check it out.
My daily driver in the manual labor profession is a SNK809 with Nato straps. I think my next purchase would be the SSB409 but I also would like to church it up a little from time to time. Are the metal bracelets sufficient or should I go for aftermarket? I've heard mixed reviews on them.
Yes it would, but price would be much higher then. I guess if people are willing to pay $500+ for a better upgrade, then so be it, but it’s currently priced pretty reasonably (not being Solar powered and all). Just my 2 cents.
nice looking seiko's but a bit to busy for me. I have a question about batteries. Most of my quartz batteries last about 3-4 years. Occasionally I get one which lasts over 10 years( an old Pulsar lasted 14 years and kept correct time) are there superduper batteries or was I just lucky? Enjoy your show.
I'm curious about this too. People saying their watch lasted for 5+ years when the watch battery is advertised to last for only like 2 to 3 years. Might be luck haha.
Are you sure you want us to share our concerns with you? 😉😄 Well, my first concern is the…kidding 🤪. Swell watches, I like the orange accent one a bit more than the green dial. I’m a sucker for Seiko💙
Hey Marc what is the significance of your yellow/green rope bracelet ? It obviously has some importance to you and I'm curious. Also it's very well worn at this point
If I didn't already have the "recraft" series SSC667 (IIRC?), which *is* a solar, I'd be seriously interested. Hell, as it is, I'm still a bit interested.
I'm a recent subscriber after seeing your collaboration with TVG and his channel The Urban Gentry, waiting on my tax refund so I can order a couple of watches.
Yeah, I look forward to those TGV podcast videos every month. Marc is great, I’ve ordered at least 6 watches from Long Island Watch. Competitive pricing and excellent customer service.
Two of my little Seiko 5s have suffered horrendous falls right on their hardlex faces. My SNKK87, which is a little diva and will keep perfect time while being worn but sulks and runs out of gas hours after being taken off wrist, fell off the strap and slammed face down into a hardwood floor. No scratches to the hardlex, no bezel damage, nothing. And my SNK375 with its snappy red stripe on its deep black dial, always runs fast because it thinks it's a gauge from a 1960s sports car. It was sitting on a towel and was violently flung onto a tile floor. No crystal damage at all, and only the slightest damage to the bezel. You would have to know what happened to even notice it.
My first time watching this guys video and the first minute of him talking reminded me of a CGI face or an AI generated face :( great watch video though.
@@jasondoe2596 Me too. A $400+ gmt promaster's inner 24 hr rehaut is off to the left. Agree, Ecodrive normally has much better alignment. Soon if the watch ticks, it will pass manufacture's specs.
Mark I DO NOT need another watch. But... look at that dial! Wow.
Definitely has a car engine vibe with that piston looking top button.
Yes!
Thanks your the only person that went or the lume. Picking up the grey/white one for my son.

Absolutely gorgeous looking dials.

Wow, Pulsar ehh? Havent heard the name long time, someone actually do collect Pulsar watches ehh?
Juste bought one yesterday for the 30th birthday of my son. Hope he Will love it.
I say it all the time, no one does dials like Seiko.
Beautiful watch, cute dial.
I just got the Seiko SSB409 and Bulova Precisionist this past week. I already owned a Seiko SSC227 Solar Prospex. I love these three watches.
You really get a Big Bang for your buck on those Seiko's! Definitely getting your money's worth and then some.
I just saw this today at the mall. It's GORGEOUS!

So complex! Great watch. Great vid. Keep at it!
Reminds me of a lot about the Avi-8 chronograph dials. Looks cool though
The blue especially is absolutely beautiful.
Thanks
Nice info, love my SSB409!
I have the green dial version and love it.
It would seem that the sandwich dial makes this a perfect candidate for solar. The face is obviously the star, but the case is really attractive too.
Definitely agree about the case. Get a slight samurai vibe from it 👍🏻
I think it was Marc, but someone said Seiko has has problems with their solar technology, so not keeping it in new releases.
Yes, that was me.

So, the bottom sub dial is always moving and the second hand is at 12, correct?
Yes. The second hand is to keep time, it moves when you push the button on top and stops after 1 hours. It's a phenomenal watch.
Very nice Seikos Mark. Can't wait for an Islander Chronograph 😜👊👊
Thanks Steve!
Reminds me a bit of Casio Edifice, no specific model but the style. The strap does make it sit up.

True
Great review.
I have the SSB407 which is a darker blue with red accents, and the bezel is a gunmetal color. Really cool watch.
Do it illuminate at night to tell the time? I’m looking at the SSB409 but I don’t think that one has it
@@DRSRPrime Not like a dive watch, it only has a small dot at the end of the hour and minute hand.
The beginning was hypnotizing, Marc just hypnotized the watch community lol

Underrated Rolex for sure

Yeah the Skydweller has complications that are useful and elegant. Very cool watch. Nice call.
Yes, I do like the blue dial. Maybe one day. I do like the YM2, from a strict engineering perspective. That functionality is wicked.
Can the glass be switched sapphire
Let’s go back to those quartz islanders….can we get the exact same day/date but in Solar???!!!! That’s ultimate convenience! Please Marc!
Maybe!
Thank you Mark
Welcome!

Such a cool design. Kind of a break after all the minimalist watches that are trending now
not me being a nerd and verifying all the mathematical equations on his clock in the background
The look reminds me of many Casio Edifice watches.
I like chronos with non-arabic indices because it avoids the numbers being cut in half by the subdials.
Good point
Numerals cut in half is a deal breaker for me on any watch.
What’s the reference on the green one?
I just got this one in white
Pretty chronos... I still wonder the alchemy behind the SKX managing to look smaller on the wrist, though.
Black magic
Illusion or hallucination maybe...
I'll give 'em some love; LOVE!!
I like the dial, but as you suggest, solar would be even better. And sapphire crystal. Let the sunshine in!
Yes!

Is it possible to stop this little second hand and make normal second hand move?
Very cool! I think a perforated leather strap would look awesome with them. Thanks Marc. Have a great day! 👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸
Good call, thanks!
Great looking watches, my question... it's a Mecaquartz that mean that the chronograph has no split fonction ?
Can confirm. I have mine on now, no split function.
@@petek7906 thx
Have you been thinking of carrying Seiko's new solar Chrono's which doesn't have a mecaquartz? I know they are quite a bit more expensive,

If they made one in gold tone it would look like C3PO from Star Wars. Oh no, I just became a geek...😂🐶🐕
True!
ssb395 was released earlier with the a white dial in the same design. It looks like a standard gear for storm troopers.
Why can only chronograph watches be MecaQuartz? Why can't a regular three-hander have that movement and then you'd get a sweeping second hand.
You can get a SSB sub 200!
it gives me Avi-8 vibes.
Sure does
Only Seiko...and Why I Love Them...lol

Islander marine master 300 m high beat
Without Seiko written on it I'd guess Casio Edifice.
I can see that.
Worth in 2024?
Very sporty watch. Yes would be better if it was solar.
When will Seiko stop using the chronograph movement with the 24 hour dial? It's completely useless.
I'm guessing they use it to balance subdial symmetry
